00:01:09One at the end.
00:01:11The two at the end.
00:01:12The one at the end.
00:01:15The End.
00:01:17The End.
00:01:20The End.
00:03:15December and we'll get to see how well Vargas comes back from having been
00:03:19roughed up significantly in that fight and special because we welcome back the
00:03:24legendary manager and trainer Emanuel Stewart expert commentator for boxing
00:03:29after dark coming off the toughest three weeks of his career Manny as you look
00:03:33back painfully I'm sure at the losses for you two superstar fighters Prince
00:03:38Nassim Hamed and Lennox Lewis how do you assess your own involvement in those
00:03:42losses in the future for those fighters first of all if I have another month
00:03:46like April this would be my full-time job looking forward to it but you know I
00:03:51look I take a lot of credit when those guys win so I have to solve a lot of the
00:03:55blame when they lose I bet it was a very painful experience and before the fight
00:04:00would have made I had so awkward in that situation that I had determined that I
00:04:05was not gonna work any further with him because he does have a lot of talent
00:04:09very likable but the relationship wasn't working and as far as Lennox's case
00:04:14Lennox felt a fighter who came out exploded a big right hand after he told me
00:04:20himself that he realized he was probably gonna lose a fight in the next couple of
00:04:24rounds because I was bleeding that he was being outclassed so rather than take the
00:04:29safe route like a David tour and say well as long as I don't get knocked out it's
00:04:32okay he came out shot his big missiles gamble knock Lennox out and Lennox and I
00:04:38have nothing but respect for that as a matter of fact Lennox told me don't ever make
00:04:44any more of those 20 to one odd fight favor me like Oliver Cole and like I see
00:04:48Rockman keep my fights with the Holyfields or whatever where I'm under now all credit to
00:04:52Rockman who took perfect advantage of a great opportunity and is working to do so
00:04:56again right now I see Rockman is energy on with his trainer Adrian Davis right now
00:05:00working for betterment he's really excited about being champion and he
00:05:04says he actually feels that he would knock Lennox out in a rematch and prove
00:05:08that he is not a fake champion and then he's gonna fight Mike Tyson but respect to
00:05:13your champion all right he's right Rock meanwhile also with us as always HBO
00:05:19boxing analyst Larry Merchant Larry Cinco de Mayo shirt I take it Thomas Jefferson
00:05:25said swim with fashion stand on principle well you're standing on principle as usual
00:05:32I'm sure and what is tonight's principle youth wasted on the young for a couple of
00:05:38years we've been tracking talented young title holders wondering if it was all too
00:05:43much too soon in the ring when they have two few fights against tougher opponents and
00:05:49high expectations out of the ring where inevitably there are distractions let's take a look at
00:05:56what's happened Fernando Vargas suffered a devastating defeat still has to resolve a felony charge of
00:06:04assault outside of the ring gold medalist David Reed also licked by Trinidad accused of domestic
00:06:13violence and Diego Corrales going to prison for spousal abuse after he was beaten by
00:06:20the super talented young Mayweather who himself rained on his own parade along the way so what we're now
00:06:27having to face him is the comebacks of fighters who are babies indeed and tonight we'll also see one veteran
00:06:36comebacking fighter as we get ready to watch John John Molina in the ring now at 135 pounds against Juan
00:06:41Lascano Molina at 36 years old you might have written him off a few years ago but in December he looked
00:06:46tremendous in beating the younger stronger Ben Tacky on the undercard of Lennox Lewis and David Tua here's the
00:06:53tale of the tape for the lightweight fight Lascano looking for a title shot down the road has to get past a very tough
00:07:00veteran to do it he's 10 years younger he's two inches taller he's got five inches more in reach
00:07:05they both weighed in a pound under the lightweight limit tonight totally unofficially on our unofficial
00:07:10HBO scale Molina has put on three pounds to 137 and Lascano seven pounds to 134 let's look at the
00:07:17rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer Harold Letterman the one Lascano John John Molina
00:07:22fight is scheduled for 12 rounds using unified rules of the association of boxing commissions there is no
00:07:29standing eight count no three knockdown rule only the referee can stop the fight and you cannot be saved by
00:07:35the bell at any round including the 12th and final round Jim Lascano used to live here in El Paso now lives in
00:07:43Diego Corrales's hometown of Sacramento California but is expected to have a big following for this fight and
00:07:51here's John John Molina glassy guy out of Puerto Rico closer look Larry John John Molina when his first title
00:08:0012 years ago still going at it he has fought the best out there and last year through 95 punches around against a
00:08:12young strong fighter named Ben tacky was throwing a hundred punches at the end of the fight
00:08:19what he's worried about he says is fighting a Texan in Texas the crowd will be on his opponent's side perhaps the
00:08:28judges as well well but only one of the judges is from Texas and let's take a look at a closer look now at Juan
00:08:35Loscano colorful young man could go a long way in boxing make some money calls himself the hispanic causing panic also says of
00:08:46himself I'm the tan Tarzan of thump as you watch no excuse me and tells us that he told his wife I'm having an
00:08:56extramarital affair she said you are he said yes it's with boxing should have seen the grin on his face as you watch
00:09:05tonight you can log on to hbo.com slash boxing and check out our redesigned boxing site there you'll find all the
00:09:11information needed for tonight's fight as well as everything you want to know about our stable of heart and

00:11:00He's also weighing in at 134 pounds.
00:11:03His professional record, 26 victories, including 19 knockouts,
00:11:09with two losses and one draw.
00:11:11Ladies and gentlemen, he's the defending NABF lightweight champion,
00:11:16the pride of El Paso, Texas,
00:11:18the Hispanic cause and panic, Juan Las Panos.
00:11:30All right, guys, Roy, get out of the instructions in the dressing room.
00:11:35Number one, protect yourself at all times.
00:11:37Touch him up and let's go to work.
00:11:39Is this the night a young fighter makes an old fighter look too old
00:11:44or whether an old fighter makes a young fighter look too young?
00:11:49Too young and too inexperienced.
00:11:53Molina was a heavy underdog against Ben Tacky
00:11:56when he outboxed Tacky from start to finish of the 12-round fight
00:12:01for a career-redesigning win in December.
00:12:08He'll need at least as good an effort against...
00:12:10He'll need at least as good an effort against Lascano,
00:12:15who probably has more of a ride in his game than did Tacky.
00:12:22In his two main event appearances on HBO,
00:12:25Molina was a loser.
00:12:26To Oscar De La Hoya in a close, spirited effort
00:12:29and to Shane Mosley in a fight in which Mosley took him apart
00:12:33with body punches.
00:12:34One, two, one, two, one.
00:12:39One, two, one.
00:12:41One, two, one.
00:12:43One, two, one.
00:12:51One, two, one.
00:12:52One, two, one.
00:12:55One, two, one.
00:12:55One, two, one.
00:12:56Well, it's clear already that Molina is not going to be able to throw
00:13:00the kind of volume of punches against Lascano as he did against Tacky.
00:13:05Yeah, Lascano is more of an intelligent fighter.
00:13:07It's making him have to take a little bit more,
00:13:09but you're still going to see a pretty good percentage of volume of punches coming in from Molina,
00:13:14so that's just his style.
00:13:15He's very relaxed, so he can throw six, seven punches off of one breathing motion.
00:13:20He does it automatically.
00:13:21Relaxed but sturdy.
00:13:23Relaxed, sturdy, very busy.
00:13:25One difference between Lascano and Tacky.
00:13:33Lascano has more foot movement, but now Molina, with a body shot, drives him back into the ropes,
00:13:37and hits him with a right hand there.
00:13:39But there seems to be a, Lascano seemed to be a little stiff in his legs,
00:13:42and that seems to be a problem.
00:13:44Very stiff in his legs and his movement, much more than I expected.
00:13:47Lascano seems to be a little bit cautious, a little bit, uh, tight right now, just...
00:14:17in this stage of the fight.
00:14:19He's fought a couple of other, and beaten a couple of other veterans, Jesse James Lehar...
00:14:24Yes.
00:14:25...and, uh, Vasquez.
00:14:27But he's backing straight up from exchanges, and Molina's taking advantage of it by jumping forward.
00:14:36Yes, he is, but he's coming back with a little straight left after every one of his right hands.
00:14:40He doesn't have a devastating right-hand punch, but he comes back with a little straight left after that.
00:14:44After that, it seems to be very effective.
00:14:46Oh, get out of here, get out of here.
00:14:49Oh!
00:14:50Three!
00:14:51Three!
00:14:52This thing about being stiff in the legs in the first round of manual, Stuart,
00:14:56we used to see it from Rafael Ruelas, who would struggle to get through the first two rounds before he seemed to loosen up.
00:15:01Felix Trinidad seems to have it, too.
00:15:03Yes, yes, yes he does.
00:15:04Three!
00:15:05Up!
00:15:06Up!
00:15:07Three!
00:15:08Get him up!
00:15:09Sometimes the fighter looks totally different by the time he gets to round three or four.
00:15:12We'll see if it happens for Lascano.
00:15:14And when we go to the corners where they speak Spanish, our interpreter is the veteran Ray Torres.
00:15:20That'll be in Molina's corner.
00:15:22Okay, thank you.
00:15:23Alright, wait a little bit too long now around, okay?
00:15:24I want to get off a little bit quicker, alright?
00:15:25You're letting him back you up a little bit too much.
00:15:26Alright?
00:15:27Remember, you can't move back in a straight line with this guy.
00:15:28Side to side movement, alright?
00:15:29Alright.
00:15:30Alright.
00:15:31And I see when you're doing the combination of it.
00:15:32Iत'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'nt'.
00:15:38You've got to remember, he lowers his left hand!
00:15:39He doesn't know how to throw that left hook!
00:15:41But you've got to be careful.
00:15:42You've got to be aware.
00:15:51Breathe deep!
00:15:54Put him down.
00:15:57Well, Emanuel, you said Molina would put forth a good punch output anyway, and you were right.
00:16:1287 punches thrown in round one to only 36 for Lascano.
00:16:17Lascano is mainly looking like setting up, trying to land his left hook, particularly power punches.
00:16:21But as he loosens up a little bit more, he should be a much better.
00:16:24There's McKenzie telling John John Molina to keep it up.
00:16:35Hey! Hey! Get back! Get back!
00:16:37Get back! Get back!
00:16:51Hey! Hey!
00:16:54Let him move!
00:17:00No holds!
00:17:01Freak! Freak! Freak!
00:17:03At the fighter's beat, Lossano said he would go more to the body to try to duplicate what happened when Shane Bosley caught the job.
00:17:20At this point in time, he has nothing to the body too much.
00:17:26Big left hook lead by Lascana there. He winks at Molina.
00:17:33Right now, if anybody's intent on getting to the body, it's Jondon.
00:17:42Yes, he throws a right hand. It's not really a power punch, but it's the way of pulling the step into Lascana,
00:17:48which sets him in a position to either land a straight left force, Lascana to grab.
00:17:52That gives him the initiative. Miss Lascana respond to him.
00:17:55And as often as not, Lascana is responding by holding.
00:17:59And that makes it look very good for Jondon.
00:18:03There's a left hook to the body by Lascana.
00:18:22Oh!
00:18:23Come on, turn him loose.
00:18:27Get down in there.
00:18:37Freak!
00:18:38Friendly.
00:18:39Come on.
00:18:40Freak!
00:18:45More body shots from Molina, so far the dominant weapon in the fight, Molina's gear activity
00:19:09level and his willingness to go to the back.
00:19:15Last month, Bernard Hopkins beat Keith Holmes easily and added another belt for his collection.
00:19:24Next week, the middleweight championship World Series continues as unbeaten 154-pound champion Felix Chito Trinidad moves up to the 160-pound weight class to take on middleweight titleist William Jaffe.
00:19:35The series heats up with a final showdown this fall, September 15, when only one man will remain standing as undisputed world middleweight champion.
00:19:44Don't miss the series, only on TVKO pay-per-view.
00:19:48How do you feel?
00:19:56I feel fine.
00:19:58I'm looking for a head.
00:19:59What is this fight?
00:20:00What is this fight?
00:20:01What is this fight?
00:20:02What is this fight?
00:20:03What is this fight?
00:20:04What is this fight?
00:20:05I mean, he made some good money.
00:20:07Good money.
00:20:08John John Molina still works to the telephone company in Puerto Rico as an installer and repairmen.
00:20:17Because he likes his job, but I believe it and most of his punches here. I would say with our local calls
00:20:27He's not a power puncher, but his activity level. I think it's a different
00:20:31Way the fight is going and I'm a little bit surprised that I've kind of seem to be a lot of
00:20:38Think they have the confidence of the spirit that I
00:20:41Speakers
00:20:43By by Molina's sheer assertiveness in the opening minutes of the fight yesterday's ever gotten off track
00:20:51That's kind of just missing with a chopping right hand Molina has an equation
00:20:58Just below the left eye
00:21:04May or may not have been the product of the punch
00:21:06They've spent a lot of time with their heads together, and it looks like they're gonna spend a lot of time with their heads together
00:21:14Leaping in with that uppercut
00:21:16My center whenever a job in his company doesn't pull back the counter punch alter times
00:21:21He just bends right into him, and that's why he's able to bully him around
00:21:29He could change the entire course of the fight a chicken just half a step enough to make John John
00:21:36He did it again
00:21:38He did it again
00:21:40If he continues to do that, he changed the fight
00:21:42Well, that's a sign of a well-schooled
00:21:44Intelligent fighter
00:21:46He saw that once
00:21:48Came back
00:21:50Came right back with
00:21:52Freddie Roach is his trainer
00:21:54That is a good trainer, too
00:21:56Yeah, and Freddie said to us yesterday
00:21:58Molina sweeps his right hand wide
00:22:00He'll be able to step past it with the left hook
00:22:02Yes, Molina doesn't really throw a proper right hand
00:22:04It's more of a club and hook type right hand
00:22:06But it gets him in a position to come back with different other punches where he can move you around
00:22:11Yeah
00:22:21Even after landing those two beautiful left hooks counter punches when he was running around he still let Molina come back and take over the round at this point on strictly activity
00:22:31Strictly activity
00:22:33And he pulls it into the boy
00:22:35And his best round he's losing it again
00:22:37Yep
00:22:39But he's making
00:22:41It seems to me
00:22:43He's making Molina
00:22:45Get a little bit wild and overaggression
00:22:47Maybe it'll work
00:22:49Or maybe it'll walk into your punch
00:22:51I may be wrong
00:22:53But trying to study what's going on inside of the mind
00:22:55If you say
00:22:57I think that Molina is actually intimidating
00:22:59LaVanna a lot
00:23:00I see a little gilb in him so to say
00:23:02He seemingly has a lot of respect
00:23:10Molina's winning the wrestling match
00:23:13And maybe the boxing match, too
00:23:15There you go
00:23:25See the other
00:23:26Again
00:23:27Alright
00:23:28There you go
00:23:29Okay
00:23:30One
00:23:31Okay
00:23:32One
00:23:33There you go
00:23:34One
00:23:35Okay
00:23:36One
00:23:37Okay
00:23:38Don't forget about your body shots
00:23:40You've got to mess with more body shots out there
00:23:41Behind the jack
00:23:42behind the deck.
00:23:43You'll say I'd left hook the body and back to the head.
00:23:45All right, son?
00:23:46Now, here.
00:23:47You let him get off first a little bit too much, OK?
00:23:49I want you to start taking the lead to this guy, OK?
00:23:52Don't let him come to you this round, OK?
00:23:54I want you to start back to the head.
00:23:57You got to be careful of his head hook.
00:23:58That's all he has.
00:24:05I seem to recall, Emmanuel, that during a previous break
00:24:09they told him he didn't have a left hook.
00:24:11Now they decided it's the only punch he has.
00:24:15You are so right.
00:24:16It's the only punch he's done.
00:24:18They told him before he doesn't know how to throw the left hook at all.
00:24:21Now all he's got is the left hook.
00:24:23Harold, what do you got?
00:24:24OK, Jim.
00:24:25I got a 29 to 28.
00:24:27Two rounds to one.
00:24:28It's very aggressive.
00:24:29Jean-Jean Molina.
00:24:30Jim, the second round was an excellent wrestling match,
00:24:33which they gave for Lasano because he landed some pieces of shit.
00:24:36But I got to tell you, I'm really annoyed at the way they let him get away with holding.
00:24:40Why let's kind of hold the leg crazy?
00:24:42He goes to the right.
00:24:43And look at this.
00:24:44He grabs like there.
00:24:46This is absolute holding.
00:24:48Wait a minute.
00:24:49I'm sorry, Harold.
00:24:51That was Molina who held in that instant.
00:24:54After a quick left hook counter shot inside by Lasano.
00:24:58Exactly.
00:25:03Oh, you tell me who's uncoiled here.
00:25:06They're both holding.
00:25:07Both holding.
00:25:08Lasano would win his fight very easily if he would just really jab,
00:25:13keep the fight at a certain distance and take a half a step back and throw a left hook.
00:25:17There it is again.
00:25:18If he would do that continually, he would win the fight very easily.
00:25:22With his left hand.
00:25:24Well, he's starting to change the fight with those counter left hooks.
00:25:27The left hook that he didn't have.
00:25:30And there's a right hand.
00:25:32And he's trying to follow the corner's instructions of becoming more of the aggressor and that's leading into more holding.
00:25:45Now he's starting to use a jab.
00:25:47Something he has that use that must perform.
00:25:48And he's very effective when he does so.
00:25:50Well, the one thing that all the fighters have a problem with is a jab.
00:25:53The simplest punch because it comes with such a short distance and the reflexes don't have much time to handle.
00:25:59And if he would just concentrate on using a jab, he would be very effective.
00:26:06So when you're fighting a guy who's 10 years older, if you have a good jab, go jab him to death, right?
00:26:12Yeah, especially with a guy like Bellina because Bellina shoots movement shot.
00:26:15And the straight line punch would always get inside first.
00:26:20And he's starting to be able to pot shot Bellina from the outside.
00:26:30That's exactly what he's doing. He's winning this round simply by pot shot.
00:26:33Get back, get back.
00:26:35Get back.

00:27:15Get back.
00:27:16You gotta fight him because it's a motherfucker here.
00:27:29You gotta do something.
00:27:33Let's put some water on him.
00:27:36What the hell's going on?
00:27:38He's putting his head on you.
00:27:40Move your hands.
00:27:42Push him if you have to.
00:27:45Don't wait up the rope.
00:27:49When you get the rope, spin off him.
00:27:51Alright, son?
00:27:53That's a beautiful round.
00:27:55That's a beautiful round.
00:27:57That's Lescano's left hand.
00:27:59He kicks off the right hand and then follows with his left and then follows with the left.
00:28:05Very effective with the left hand.
00:28:07Later in the round.
00:28:09End of the round.
00:28:11They get into it a little bit.
00:28:13At this stage of his career, John John Molina's best and most effective style is throwing a volume of punches.
00:28:21His defense is not the best.
00:28:23You can hit him with punches, but he'll usually just out punch you and out hustle.
00:28:27He doesn't try to win his fights.
00:28:29Knock him out, but the thing that Lozano's gotta do is to keep punching him and be able to hold him off when he comes back.
00:28:35Now in the last round, Lozano only 232 places.
00:28:37But he landed 21 of them.
00:28:39Pops got him from the outside.
00:28:41And since most of them were power shots, you could almost be certainly won the round.
00:28:45He should have won the round.
00:28:47He should have won the round.
00:28:49John John is not that good for him.
00:28:51You can hit him kind of easy, but you have to be prepared to come back to those punches right behind you.
00:28:55Unless you have devastating one punch punches.
00:28:57Asano again lands big with the left hook.
00:29:11Right now, the young guy is making the old guy look old.
00:29:14And the intimidation factor, which Manuel referred to earlier, is no longer there.
00:29:19Well, his confidence level is going to lead to Bolton.
00:29:23And all he has to do is sit down and punch with four power.
00:29:25And he possibly could be the knockout in John John.
00:29:27Because he's not going to miss him too much if he punches.
00:29:53One, two, three.
00:29:54One, two, three.
00:29:55One, two, three.
00:29:56One.
00:29:57One, two, three.
00:29:58One, two, three.
00:29:59One, two, three.
00:30:00Asano's starting to see Molina very well.
00:30:02It's almost as if in the first three rounds, he couldn't quite get a beat on Molina's timing,
00:30:07what he was trying to do.
00:30:08Now it's a whole different story.
00:30:11He's like a hitter with a scouting report, who's sitting there waiting on the pitch that he knows
00:30:15is going to eventually be coming.
00:30:16Yes, the only problem he has is if he doesn't knock out John John is being appointed, accepted
00:30:22by John John having such a big fight in the punches.
00:30:25Hard right hand inside by Lascano.
00:30:28Molina continues to press the action.
00:30:31Here's a straight right hand for Molina.
00:30:34One of the two big punches that he's landed all night.
00:30:37He's landed all night.
00:30:38French Allen knows Molina that punches land.
00:30:40He just keeps physically pushing you around and makes you look down.
00:30:43And you can tell it had an attack because Lascano, who's been told to stay off the ropes,
00:30:47backs into the ropes and stayed there.
00:30:48That's correct.
00:30:49And this round is going to be a close round again.
00:30:55If he would just stick to that solid left jab and primordered with a hard left hook,
00:30:59this fight would be a very easy fight.
00:31:07Be with us May 14 for the premiere of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
00:31:18It's been almost 25 years since Kermit Washington decked Rudy Tomjanovich in a basketball game.
00:31:24Bryant Gumbel talks with Washington about the fun and his aftermath.
00:31:28Also, Bernard Goldberg goes behind the scenes and takes a look at the IMG Sports Academy,
00:31:34an expensive school for kids who hope to become professional athletes.
00:31:39Are their dreams unrealistic?
00:31:41Real sports.
00:31:42Nothing is out of bounds.
00:31:45All right?
00:31:46Put your right hand behind you.
00:31:47Okay?
00:31:48All right?
00:31:49That is one.
00:31:50Combination, you have to go with this guy.
00:31:52One punch, you're not going to do it.
00:31:53Okay.
00:31:54One, two, three.
00:31:55Yeah, straight right hand and let him come back and let him hard.
00:31:57Okay?
00:31:58You get this guy.
00:31:59One, two, three.
00:32:00One, two, three.
00:32:01One, two, three.
00:32:02Molina got into a good right hand in that round.
00:32:05That was, yeah, one of the sell and really clean punches that he made.
00:32:13In round five, Juan Locano landed 29 out of 40 punches.
00:32:17That's a 60% connect percentage.
00:32:20Molina threw 85 punches.
00:32:22Nearly twice as many as Locano.
00:32:24Interesting fight for the scorers.
00:32:26One judge from New York, one from Indiana, one from Texas.
00:32:29One judge from New York, one from Indiana, one from Texas.
00:32:43Very solid defensively, Emmanuel.
00:32:46His hands are up.
00:32:47Shoulders in.
00:32:48Doesn't get hit too many clean punches.
00:32:51The only thing is he needs to box to keep it a little distance.
00:32:57He was still a tall guy.
00:32:59And if he keeps John John out there, he can catch him with cleaner punches.
00:33:03But all he's saying is true.
00:33:04He has a very good defense.
00:33:05But it's still making the fight close, but it doesn't have to do that.
00:33:10Molina has been a father ever since he was 16 years old.
00:33:14Could have buried him, as it has with so many other young men.
00:33:17But he used it as a focal point in his life.
00:33:20Fought through the hard times.
00:33:22Worked from time to time to help support his family.
00:33:25And has made it through with the same woman with whom he had that baby when he was 16.
00:33:30Lovely lady named Lourdes, who's one year older.
00:33:33He says, hey, she was 17, I was 16.
00:33:36I lied to her and told her I was 18.
00:33:38She was nice enough to pretend to believe me.
00:33:40They have four children now.
00:33:43Now there's blood in the ring.
00:34:01Blood from somebody's brow.
00:34:03Terry McKenzie points to his head as if you say it was a headbutt.
00:34:07Yeah.
00:34:08And it's coming.
00:34:09It could be in a bad place for Lascano.
00:34:12Inside his left eye.
00:34:16McKenzie taking a look at the cut.
00:34:21And now calls timeout so that a doctor can take a look.
00:34:25And McKenzie's already indicated to us that this was the product of a butt.
00:34:29Now Harold, what's the ruling here if it's stopped by an accidental butt?
00:34:34We're beyond the fourth round.
00:34:36If the fight gets stopped, they score the sixth round, and we go to the scorecard.
00:34:41If they don't let it go.
00:34:42But if this cut causes the fight to be stopped, it goes to the scorecard.
00:34:46Because, you know, we've gone beyond four, and it was an accidental butt.
00:34:51Sometimes it just causes the cut fighter to fight with more urgency,
00:34:55and he does a better job of going about his business.
00:34:58We'll see if Lascano reacts that way.
00:35:01We'll see if Lascano reacts that way.
00:35:03We'll see if Lascano reacts that way.
00:35:06Hey, Emmanuel, what do you think of that cut?
00:35:25Well, I don't think it's that bad
00:35:27But the thing is that he shouldn't have even gotten cut out if he would keep the fight at a distance
00:35:31He's fighting too close to be such a tall man. His height is not even an advantage in this fight, the way that he's fighting
00:35:39And John John is used to this type of fight
00:35:50The cut is in our way, doesn't bleed too much anymore
00:35:53So you don't have too much blood though
00:35:56There was a book
00:35:58Both fighters have landed 108 punches to this point in the fight
00:36:04I'm going to be a little bit busier out there, okay son?
00:36:08Don't get caught in the ropes unless this guy takes the action, okay?
00:36:11Heads clashing in the night, both fighters coming in
00:36:16We see John John Molina coming up
00:36:19Boom
00:36:20To the tallest man
00:36:22Cracking him
00:36:24Over his nose
00:36:25Oh, that hurts
00:36:31Lascano has the outstanding Joe Steve in his corner, one of the better cut men in the sport
00:36:36Harold, how do you have it through six?
00:36:37Okay, Jim
00:36:38I thought in round six interesting lean-up
00:36:41John John Molina dead enough to even his fight up
00:36:44I thought he fell behind around four and five
00:36:46When Lascano landed a lot of good green shots as you saw
00:36:50But in round six, John John Molina with that aggressive style of his
00:36:54Got in a lot of good shots, won the round, all even, three to three, 57-57
00:36:58I have it four rounds and two for Lascano
00:37:02Don't run off
00:37:03No.
00:37:04No.
00:37:05No.
00:37:07I have it there, all the guys
00:37:08in the neighborhood
00:37:09Make it up, make it up
00:37:10No.
00:37:12No
00:37:13No.
00:37:14No.
00:37:15Oh, this is what you guys love
00:37:16Let's go, the game's play
00:37:18right
00:37:20Oh, this is what I wanted to do
00:37:21Do you want to go?
00:37:23I mean, there's this guy
00:37:25No.
00:37:26I mean, there's this guy
00:37:27What else is the guy
00:37:28A good combination by Lascano
00:37:29Good one-two with the right and the left, and Molina comes back with a big right hand of his own.
00:37:46Freak! Freak! Freak!
00:37:49Hold it!
00:37:51Freak! Go!
00:37:59Woo!
00:38:01Watching the 135-pound John John Molina, fighting with an advertisement for Ortiz Tire Center on the side of his trunk.
00:38:11Reminds you that one of the great lightweights, Carlos Ortiz, was from Puerto Rico.
00:38:15Yeah, I forgot about that.
00:38:16No, he was from New York. He was Puerto Rican.
00:38:19Oh, he's from New York? Not from Puerto Rico originally?
00:38:22I'm not 100% sure, but he's one of my favorite fighters ever.
00:38:26One of the greatest lightweight champions ever.
00:38:28Tremendously strong lightweight.
00:38:30Yeah, systematic, great fundamental fighter, the true professional.
00:38:33And did a lot of his defenses in the other guys' countries.
00:38:39Big right hand by Lascano, left to the fight.
00:38:45Lean punches from Juan Lascano, and a huge right foot!
00:38:53What a chin John John Molina showed today!
00:38:56That's a little bit.
00:38:57As long as he keeps John at that whistle, he can hit him on the table when he gets too close as a problem.
00:39:02That's why Shane Mosley had to beat him down in the body.
00:39:05Oh, yeah.
00:39:07Oh, yeah.
00:39:08Oh, there's another huge right cross by Lascano, and still Molina walked forward.
00:39:17How many 36-year-old fighters are still willing to take the kind of punishment that Molina has taken in this round?
00:39:26Very, very early.
00:39:27Oh, these are clean shots.
00:39:28Oh, these are clean shots.
00:39:29We're losing now.
00:39:30We're losing this fight.
00:39:31Your hands are too low.
00:39:32You're taking too many punches.
00:39:33You're going to lose the fight if that keeps going.
00:39:34No.
00:39:35No.
00:39:36We're losing this fight.
00:39:48Your hands are too low.
00:39:53You're taking too many punches.
00:39:58You're going to lose the fight if that keeps going.
00:40:01You heard him with the body shot there.
00:40:03You can see it, right here, put that hook to the body, and you're right here, right behind
00:40:11you.
00:40:12Beautiful combinations, beautiful combinations.
00:40:18That was Lozano's best round.
00:40:20You have to wonder now, is the great veteran winding down against a hungry young fighter,
00:40:30well-spooled fighter who has been able to handle him.
00:40:37Round eight.
00:40:38Lozano comes out and sticks his jab in Molina's face from business.
00:40:41Goes back to working him at arm's length.
00:40:47And you heard Emmanuel Stewart say in the last round, if Lozano stays at range, he can fire
00:40:54at will.
00:40:55Yeah.
00:40:56He's frightening with a guy like this particular with a bald head, a butt is very painful.
00:41:02It's really like a solid bone cast into your head.
00:41:04And this Lozano keeps him at that distance out there so he's a fight.
00:41:11Incidentally, what a job Joe Souza has done on the cut.
00:41:14Oh yeah, Joe's one of the best of the business.
00:41:16Molina nodding, almost nodding in approval of Les Cana saying, you're really doing it,
00:41:23kid.
00:41:24But I'm not done yet.
00:41:26He's a true professional fighter.
00:41:30You know, most small fighters don't have long careers in if they're using it.
00:41:33For him to be fighting this effectively at 36 against top young fighter, this square the
00:41:38way to kind of attribute to him.
00:41:39For holding in there.
00:41:40Hey!
00:41:41He's back.
00:41:42It's kind of showing that he can strike from outside, he can draw inside, he can draw inside,
00:42:07right?
00:42:08This is not a one-dimensional fighter.
00:42:12No particular power, but he throws his punches in some bunches occasionally, and he's been
00:42:21quite effective.
00:42:22And he's been very accurate, particularly in the last few rounds, landing 13 of his first
00:42:2819 punches in this round.
00:42:29He just came very close, incidentally, to pushing John John Molina through the ropes in the Larry
00:42:35Merchant's lap.
00:42:36And I would've hugged him.
00:42:37Would've been a Cinco de Mayo present for you.
00:42:38Because he's one of my favorite fighters.
00:42:39Yeah!
00:42:40Oh!
00:42:41Oh!
00:42:42Oh!
00:42:43Oh!
00:42:44Oh!
00:42:45Oh!
00:42:46Oh!
00:42:47Oh!
00:42:48Oh!
00:42:49Oh!
00:42:50Oh!
00:42:51Oh!
00:42:52Oh!
00:42:53Oh!
00:42:54Oh!
00:42:55Oh!
00:42:56Oh!
00:42:57Oh!
00:42:58Oh!
00:42:59Oh!
00:43:00Oh!
00:43:01Oh!
00:43:02Oh!
00:43:03Oh!
00:43:04Oh!
00:43:05Oh!
00:43:06Oh!
00:43:07Oh!
00:43:08Oh!
00:43:09Oh!
00:43:10Oh!
00:43:11Oh!
00:43:12Oh!
00:43:13Oh!
00:43:14Oh!
00:43:15Oh!
00:43:16Oh!
00:43:17Oh!
00:43:18Oh!
00:43:19Oh!
00:43:20Oh!
00:43:21Oh!
00:43:22Oh!
00:43:23Oh!
00:43:24Oh!
00:43:25Oh!
00:43:26Oh!
00:43:27the W and take the W and go forward
00:43:37good fight Juan Lascano of El Paso Texas fighting before his hometown crowd
00:43:43against Dodg-Don Malino Fajardo Puerto Rico
00:43:50it's quite yours you understand this is your fight this is your title you
00:43:56understand me okay you can win this one keep working keep punching and listen to
00:44:01Freddie
00:44:03yeah
00:44:05that's gonna be a chicken to get him
00:44:08let's rub his arm
00:44:14come on what are you what are you chicken now let's go you gotta get to do
00:44:19something
00:44:26Lascano listening both to his cut man Joe Souza and to trainer Freddie Roach
00:44:31Lascano landed 30 of 55 punches in round 8 55 percent Molina 13 out of 81 still
00:44:38throwing not landing all that much Freddie Roach Lascano's trainer was he not
00:44:44Emmanuel Stewart the protege of the great Eddie Fuchs yeah it's not only that he
00:44:47had a very good amateur career himself him and his brother joy was two of the top
00:44:52amateur fighters back in the era with Tommy Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard and all
00:44:56those guys family he was representing New England at that time he's fighting at 106
00:45:00pounds and he was out to fight one of my fighters I had another Irish kid named John
00:45:05and he said he's one of the best fighters that we have in boxing and he works training box
00:45:11at 20 a half a day he starts at 7 in the morning and ends up at 7 at night and he told me the other
00:45:18day that Michael Moore or one of your fighters he's going to join him starting next week yeah
00:45:23Michael is making a pretty decent comeback right now and uh Freddie traded in a couple of his good
00:45:29fights that he had just before he quit boxing a couple years ago thing I love about Freddie is
00:45:33he's not a glory seeker he's not one of these trainers who's in the lobby talking to the writers
00:45:37he's with his fighters all the time he's with his fighters and he's got a pretty good stable of
00:45:41guys training as Wildcat Jim out in Los Angeles now he's got Lucia Riker which I consider maybe one of
00:45:46the best boxers in the world right she can fight and uh transfer both are straight and after at the same
00:45:53time James Tony straight in there and also Maurice Harris has trained there who will be watching
00:45:58next week when he'll be fighting with uh talented fighter oh yeah a little better Harris yeah so
00:46:02he's a good trainer so it's a good stable of fighter straight in his gym I thought I did
00:46:16you know at this stage other side a gentleman fighter like Molina he just does things off for
00:46:22is that he doesn't even think about it he's had so many fights he just does things effectively
00:46:26and if Lascano would just get a look just as a load up on the punches properly he could win this fight
00:46:31by knock-up very easily but if he stays very close John John even if he's tired out on his feet he's
00:46:37going to keep doing certain things automatically but because John John's defense is so inconsistent
00:46:46because there's so many holes in his defense Lascano continues to land clean punches at a greater
00:46:52than 50 percent rate and it's just almost impossible for the judges not to see the accuracy with which
00:46:58he's pinpointing his punch yes yeah Molina was going the biggest volume of punches but the cream effective
00:47:04punches is coming from the younger time John John is beginning to take a beating his heart keeps beating
00:47:12and he's taking a lot of clean shots yes and he has no way of defending himself from themselves
00:47:29perfect example right there how much longer does Molina want to take clean shots right on the button
00:47:36from Juan Lascano and still to come the main event at 154 pounds ferocious Fernando Vargas more popular
00:47:45than ever in the wake of his first defeat knocked down five times by Felix Trinidad but ready to come back
00:47:51against 30 Puerto Rican veteran Wilfredo Rivera Rivera with four losses in his career twice to Whitaker once to
00:47:59De La Hoya once the most okay all right listen to me down here this is the championship rounds the last
00:48:09three rounds you got to go do not make it close it's all yours all right all right are you feeling good
00:48:19a little bad you got a box then interpreter Ray Torres tells us that while we were promoting the
00:48:28upcoming bout between Vargas and Rivera the people in Molina's corner told him if he continues to take
00:48:34the number of clean shots that he's been taking in the last two three rounds they'll stop the fight on his
00:48:39behalf so it's up to Molina to show his corner now that he can be more competitive and try to avoid some of the
00:48:45incoming from Lascano Harold how do you have it through nine I'll get you this fight's becoming a
00:48:51no-brainer 87 84 six rounds to three uh Juan Lascano he certainly won around seven eight nine very big
00:48:59just as you thought it kept the fight on the outside landed to clean the harder shot and he's taking a
00:49:04commanding lead I mean he could get no worse than a draw now unless he gets knocked down so Juan Lascano piling up a
00:49:10big lead this fight has momentum going for him as you say it's it's really becoming
00:49:15a no-brainer
00:49:32as we mentioned at the beginning of the fight Molina was able to land consistently against young strong
00:49:37Ben Paki in December but Paki was more of a stationary target Lascano had more variety in his game and as
00:49:44this fight has gone on Molina has continued to throw but hasn't been able to connect
00:49:51had been promised to fight against Jose Luis Castillo one of the lightweight title holders perhaps the best
00:49:59of the 135 pounders there's no solid offer or there's nothing on paper but off of this fight he could fight
00:50:10to steal with Shane Mosley having moved up to 147 a couple of years ago and with superstars
00:50:18in waiting Floyd Mayweather jr and uh of course Joel Casamayor down at 130 the lightweight division
00:50:27has become a little nondescript looking for a new star and most of those junior likeness are moving up to
00:50:32nine plus four I think uh eventually Mayweather and Corrales will all be in this together
00:50:39I know most of them I know when they're not in training I've been with a person
00:50:42we're walking around the other 160 pounds so they were most of them would be moving up well I sincerely
00:50:47doubt that when Corrales comes back to boxing which is more than a year down the road that he would ever be
00:50:52able to make 130 again and I don't know that his corner is going to let him take any more of this
00:51:07this great old quote has been to Jiminy Ward
00:51:10he can hardly stand up
00:51:30but look at the wind look at this determination of Molina that's all of it that's it
00:51:35there's no way in the world they could fit him out of the game let's see what they'll do
00:51:47I'm here give me some water for me
00:52:05we gotta go now
00:52:19now we're gonna do something here we see the end of the round that punch and that punch hurt
00:52:25Molina but look at the wall as Cano just couldn't put a finishing punch on him as Molina
00:52:31lead the way from those long invisible fist was between them that presented him from being hit
00:52:39it comes out for the 11th is this the last round we'll see this great old warrior
00:52:49let's go asking the referee to remove some grief from his face jerry mckinsey says go back
00:52:54go back to his face jerry mckinsey says go back to his face jerry mckinsey says go back to his face
00:53:00great right shot left from loscano
00:53:04two more lands and punches
00:53:06and now a little bit too over a little bit too over eager
00:53:16and is near
00:53:18Molina just won't go down
00:53:20there's no big fish by the love folks jerry mckinsey very close to stopping it
00:53:29and you hope he will right now too many big penses
00:53:33there comes the towel the towel is in the ring the towel is in the ring and still referee jerry mckinsey
00:53:40couldn't stop the fight unfortunately Molina took about five more shots than he needed to
00:53:47they should have stopped the fight now falter caught up but not stopping the fight in between
00:53:51the rounds the corner should have stopped the fight the referee should have stopped the fight
00:53:58john john Molina had done too much in his career to have to suffer for these last seconds in this round
00:54:06and loscano goes to the canvas in apparent exhaustion after finally putting Molina away
00:54:13you know i i'd like to point out something earlier the last two rounds i thought molina's
00:54:19mom was doing too much massaging his muscles a massaging of muscles excessively leaves your muscles
00:54:24spent tired and weak i had that experience with tom of turns when he was fighting marvin hackley with his
00:54:29legs and i noticed the last half of the fight they've been pointed it was excessively massaging his
00:54:34body which takes away a lot of your energy and just snap and your punches in the movement anyway
00:54:40and now the crowd gets the salute hometown man juan lascano a mexican-american winner
00:54:49on cinco de mayo he said that all of his career was pointed at this match
00:54:55he made the most of it
00:55:02the man who says he's been having an extramarital affair with boxing
00:55:10indulges in a labor of love tonight
00:55:12and scores a big victory
00:55:27perhaps the last punches that john john molina will ever absorb
00:55:33i hope so
00:55:35the young guy
00:55:37made the old guy look not just old
00:55:40now what's sincere you can see the towel sail into the ring behind lascano the towel is in the ring by now
00:55:47mckinsey could have stopped the fight a long time before that
00:56:01he's in the ring behind the ring behind the ring behind the ring behind the ring behind the ring
00:56:06what in the world is that referee waiting for it's almost as if he's afraid to get hit
00:56:13and that's why he's not stopping the fight
00:56:17you wonder you totally wonder and actually he never did really stop it
00:56:21so lascano continues to rejoice in victory let's go to ring announcer michael buffer for the official
00:56:34particular ladies and gentlemen in a magnificent lightweight contest here in el paso
00:56:41so the end comes at one minute and six seconds of round number 11
00:56:48your winner the pride of el paso texas the hispanic close in panic
00:56:54final copy box numbers lascano landing at a 50 percent rate when you see that
00:57:23if the fighter has any punch at all you know that the opponent has taken a beating molina
00:57:28managed to put out 825 punches in 10 plus rounds so the energy level was still there for the 36 year
00:57:36old fighter but lascano was able to pot shot from the outside and eventually as emmanuel stewart had
00:57:43suggested he would be was able to fire at will jabs you can see that lascano as accurate with jabs just
00:57:52as he was with power punches and molina was throwing his jab but unable to land it
00:58:01manny scores were relatively close 96 94 96 94 96 93 so molina was arguably still in the fight
00:58:11on the scorecards but all in all a dominating victory for juan lascano it was a very impressive victory
00:58:16he's a strong kid a lot of inside strength and he would be a force in boxing because most top
00:58:21fighters are born inside and i think he's got that his skills he's got to polish up on all right
00:58:27talk about born fighters we're going to see one of the best known names in the sport next week
00:58:32a born fighter indeed felix tito trinidad of puerto rico as he moves into the second fight of the world
00:58:39middleweight championship series trinidad going up against middleweight title holder william joppy
00:58:46in a fight which a lot of people are looking forward to because joppy is given by many ringside experts
00:58:52a big chance against tito just a little while ago our larry merchant was able to sit down and talk with
00:58:58both fighters about this upcoming assignment
00:59:06for the middleweight championship of the world tito sitting next to your opponent do you sense
00:59:15that he is the biggest strongest man you have ever fought william joppy is one of the champions at 160
00:59:24pounds but i feel that i am a true middleweight i know i will win he takes the chance because he is
00:59:32that hungry to win william sitting next to your opponent do you sense in any way that you are
00:59:40stronger than him as middleweight champion fighting somebody who's moving up in weight i'm going to show
00:59:46tito trinidad that middleweight is where the bus stops none of that backing up him walking me down
00:59:52none of that at middleweight he cannot do that another low blow another point deduction for trinidad
00:59:59william are you concerned that if you knock him down that he would do something like that to you
01:00:06he hits me low i'm gonna back low and i'm going to deal with it like that um vargas is just using
01:00:12that for an excuse now tito fernando vargas said that after he knocked you down you hit him low
01:00:21deliberately in order to gain time what is your response to that well maybe there were one or two
01:00:29couple of low blows but they were not intentional however vargas hit me a lot of low blows and the
01:00:35referee didn't call them
01:00:42william do you think you can impose your strength
01:00:46on tito much as marvin haggler did with tommy hearns yeah i could use it but um
01:00:55i'm pretty much going into this fight the same way i'm not gonna let a trinidad coming from a 147
01:01:01even 54 come up and walk me down like he's done david reeds or the fernando vargas or oscar delahoy
01:01:07you know give us your thoughts about fighting these fights in madison square garden and whether
01:01:18or not that favors you because there are so many of your fans in new york yes i know that there will
01:01:25be a lot of puerto ricans and latin supporting me giving up losses to me on may 12th and september 15th
01:01:32when i when i win the two fights william do you feel you have to win decisively to get a decision if
01:01:41it goes that far or that you have to try for a knockout because it's in new york it can't be a
01:01:4612 round close fight because they will give it to the people today he's a marquee uh fighter um you
01:01:53know the business and they give it to him and i mean but i'm not gonna let it go that way what a champion
01:01:59what a performance braveheart all the way tito what does it mean to you to be able to
01:02:07climb this new mountain as a as a champion i have been a champion in the welterweights
01:02:17in the junior middleweight division and now in the level of the middleweights
01:02:22well it'll mean a new title three titles in my career and that will bring me up further and i
01:02:30will be shining more like a star thank you tito thank you william
01:02:39emmanuel stewart you were a big part of the definitive middleweight championship fight haggler
01:02:43hearns in 1985 could this fight be similarly spectacular it definitely could be when you look
01:02:50at trinidad's history of getting knocked down often coming on at the end and he fights with so much
01:02:55spirit and passion and aggressiveness and intensity he definitely qualifies to be in a super fight
01:03:00and i think joppy in particular being that he's all on an emotional high i guess now after his neighbor
01:03:06i'll see rockman just come off of that great upset victory and the fact that seemingly this is the year of
01:03:11the underdogs he's going to come in and fight a good fight yeah that's right if you look around
01:03:15and you say well let's see barrera beat prince nassim and rockman beat lewis where's the next big upset
01:03:20in the sport obviously that would be joppy beating trinidad but trinidad hits and gets hit that's what
01:03:27people pay to see and larry merchant uh the implications of this fight not just for the two combatants
01:03:33but for all of the other stars who hover around this weight class well you know we like to speculate
01:03:40about what comes up even though we pollute the air and fell forest in speculation as you saw with uh
01:03:47with lewis and tyson that with one punch all goes out but if tito wins this next fight and then goes
01:03:57on to fight for the middleweight championship against bernard hopkins and wins that what we're going to see
01:04:03is his decision on whether he wants to go up against roy jones we're going to see whether oscar
01:04:09de la hoya wants to fight vargas at 154 oscar's fighting at 154 next month vargas may fight for
01:04:17the titles vacated by tito so there's all kinds of things going on here with mosley lurking in the
01:04:24background will he get a fight with either vargas or uh uh trinidad no delahoy delahoy there you go
01:04:32and he's offered to fight trinidad as well so everybody wants to fight each other which is great
01:04:37this is a very significant fight and i'm really looking forward can't wait to see it next saturday
01:04:42night tv ko pay-per-view live from madison square garden william joppy middleweight title holder
01:04:47against felix trinidad coming up from 154 pounds and the man who is the overall favorite of the boxing
01:04:54public to win the middleweight championship series we'll see what happens
