Julio Diaz faces Angel Manfredy in an IBF Lightweight elimination fight on HBO Boxing
Transcript
00:00:00Yeah, come on, come on.
00:00:08The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports, the network of champions.
00:00:16Last Saturday night, New York City, still mourning the tragic events of September 11,
00:00:21and forever grateful to the countless heroes still working endless hours at Ground Zero,
00:00:26played host to the Middleweight Championship Unification Series final.
00:00:32Inside the ring, undefeated Felix Trinidad, at age 28, one of the sport's brightest stars,
00:00:38stood opposite 36-year-old Bernard Hopkins, appearing in the first megafight of his career,
00:00:43though attempting to equal the record for middleweight title defenses.
00:00:48Astonishingly, the 3-1 underdog Hopkins outboxed the younger Trinidad all night,
00:00:54looking patiently for chances to stick his right hand.
00:00:57Hard right hand by Hopkins! Biggest blow in the fight!
00:01:01As the fight reached its middle rounds, a frustrated Trinidad still hadn't found his range,
00:01:06while his opponent continued sticking straight right hands,
00:01:10now landing with more power more frequently.
00:01:13Right now, Thorne is showing a multiplicity of skills as he continues to outbox Tito.
00:01:19In the end, Hopkins put a final exclamation point on an eight-year unbeaten run.
00:01:25It was a picture-perfect ending to a tactical mastery of Trinidad,
00:01:29which cemented Hopkins' place in middleweight history.
00:01:32Hopkins imposing his will and his skill on the man who is tonight the lesser fighter.
00:01:39Also tonight, a lightweight elimination fight between Julio Diaz and Angel Manfredi.
00:01:45Following an impressive stoppage of Arturo Gatti in 1998,
00:01:49Manfredi stumbled in three separate shots at a lightweight title.
00:01:53Now, only a month away from his 27th birthday,
00:01:56he is one win away from again challenging for that elusive belt.
00:02:01Standing in Manfredi's way, 21-year-old Julio Diaz,
00:02:05one of the lightweight division's top prospects at 23-0.
00:02:09Diaz may not be that far away from a shot at false battle for his title,
00:02:13should he get past Manfredi tonight.
00:02:16So first up, it's lightweight Julio Diaz and Angel Manfredi live.
00:02:21Then the replay, last Saturday's dramatic upset showdown
00:02:25for the middleweight championship between Felix Trinidad and Bernard Hopkins.
00:03:06We're in Corpus Christi, Texas, on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico,
00:03:09with a special edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing.
00:03:13Tonight, the Memorial Coliseum hosts a lightweight eliminator fight,
00:03:16featuring undefeated 21-year-old Julio Diaz and Angel Manfredi,
00:03:21looking to reclaim a spot in boxing spotlight.
00:03:24Then we'll show you last week's finale of the middleweight championship unification series.
00:03:29Between Felix Trinidad and Bernard Hopkins,
00:03:31it took place in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
00:03:35Texas, with a tropical twist.
00:03:37Maybe that's the best description for this coastal year-round visitor destination.
00:03:41Corpus Christi, gateway to Padre Island National Seashore,
00:03:45home of the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, and other military facilities.
00:03:50Tonight, the crowds will come to this minor league hockey arena
00:03:54to see one of boxing's hottest young prospects facing a seasoned 26-year-old veteran.
00:03:59The winner, looking ahead toward a title shot,
00:04:02maybe as early as next year.
00:04:05And hello again, everybody.
00:04:07I'm Jim Lampley, along with HBO Boxing analyst Larry Merchant
00:04:10and HBO Boxing expert Emmanuel Stewart.
00:04:13We welcome you to this special edition of World Championship Boxing,
00:04:16which, as you know by now, will showcase first
00:04:19a rising lightweight contender Julio Diaz
00:04:22in by far the toughest fight of his career
00:04:25against Angel Manfredi, who may well still be of championship quality.
00:04:29We'll find out tonight.
00:04:30And then, the main event is our tape delay of last week's sensational
00:04:36middleweight championship unification series finale
00:04:39between Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad,
00:04:42a stunningly effective performance by Hopkins,
00:04:45who dominated Trinidad all the way before ultimately knocking him out in the 12th round.
00:04:50Larry Merchant, for months, Bernard Hopkins trumpeted to anyone who would listen
00:04:56that this would be his defining fight.
00:04:59In retrospect, how definitive would you say it was?
00:05:02Much in the same way that Marvin Hagler's victory over Tommy Hearns
00:05:07in their memorable fight.
00:05:09It defined him.
00:05:10It elevated him, did that nearly flawless masterpiece.
00:05:18Bernard Hopkins out-thought, out-fought, amazingly, in the end, out-classed
00:05:24one of the unbeaten sun gods of the sport.
00:05:29Jim, Hopkins went into that fight like an old gunslinger who wanted to be the sheriff,
00:05:34and he came out the governor.
00:05:37Indeed.
00:05:37Larry, it's the second time this year that we've seen a fighter with the all-around game
00:05:41and all the skills go in and make a great puncher look one-dimensional.
00:05:46The first time was when Marco Antonio Barrera did it to the man that Emmanuel Stewart used to train,
00:05:51Prince Nassim Hamed.
00:05:53But coming into last week's fight, Manny, a lot of people in the sport knew that
00:05:57that kind of game plan with mobility, with all-around skills,
00:06:02might be the one that could be Trinidad's Achilles heel.
00:06:04How come Hopkins was able to do what so many other good fighters weren't able to do against Trinidad?
00:06:10First of all, Hopkins is a good fighter and has always been a good fighter.
00:06:15Oftentimes, we haven't saw him because he hasn't had the exposure.
00:06:18Next, he was a full millweight, a strong millweight, not a weak millweight, a small millweight,
00:06:23like William Joppy was.
00:06:24And he came in with a plan.
00:06:25His plan was solid, very realistically, very well thought out.
00:06:29And he and his trainer, Bowie Fisher, came in very well prepared,
00:06:32and he stuck to his plan all the way through.
00:06:35And based on the fact that Trinidad did not have a solid plan,
00:06:39and I think he was still adjusting to that weight coming up also,
00:06:43it was just too much.
00:06:44And Hopkins came out with a great victory.
00:06:45Well, you'll see it all immediately following the fight which is about to take place in the ring here.
00:06:50But right now, let's look at the tale of the tape for the tape all immediately following the fight
00:06:55which is about to take place in the ring here.
00:06:57But right now, let's look at the tale of the tape for the two lightweights who are about to meet
00:07:01Julio Diaz of Coachella, California, and Angel Manfredi from Gary, Indiana.
00:07:06You can see that at age 26, Manfredi's already a grizzled veteran of the sport.
00:07:11Diaz, five years younger at 21, three inches taller at five feet nine.
00:07:15Manfredi with exceptionally long arms for his height.
00:07:18They both weighed in within a half pound of the 135-pound limit.
00:07:22Unofficially on our HBO scales, they both weigh 143 pounds tonight.
00:07:28Punch that numbers, Larry.
00:07:30Look at their activity.
00:07:32Similar.
00:07:33Manfredi more accurate against a better class of opponents.
00:07:39But tellingly, on defense, Diaz opponents have a much more difficult time
00:07:45he's the counter-puncher.
00:07:47Manfredi has to be the offensive force.
00:07:51Rules at the bout whether unofficial ringside scorer, Texas Harold Letterman.
00:07:54The unified rules for tonight's fight are there is no three-knockdown rule.
00:07:58Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:08:00In case the cutter scores by an accidental headbutt, we'll go to the score.
00:08:10Well, we're a long way from the fruit and vegetable fields of the desert in California where Julio Diaz grew
00:08:17up picking okra and strawberries
00:08:20and various other crops with his other family members.
00:08:24But he feels right at home here and expects to get great support from the largely Mexican-American boxing crowd
00:08:30on hand.
00:08:31This is the prodigy of a boxing family, the fourth and youngest brother to become a professional prize fighter.
00:08:42His next oldest brother, Antonio, one of the better welterweights in the world.
00:08:48Julio seems to have all of the skills to become a real force in the game.
00:08:56Exceptionally mature for 21 years old, thinks he's ready for championship-quality fight, hopes to prove it tonight
00:09:03and to go forward against one of the reigning lightweight titolists early next year.
00:09:23HBO fans will remember first falling in love with Angel Manfredi and his brilliant performance in beating Arturo Gatti a
00:09:32few years back.
00:09:33After that, Manfredi had several shots at the upper echelons of the sport.
00:09:37Only the most talented fighters have beaten him, guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Diego Corrales.
00:09:46But in the rest of his fight, he's been a solid competitor.
00:09:51And he does what many other fighters won't do.
00:09:55When he's lost to one of the top guys, he goes back down, takes small money fights, fights his way
00:10:04back into contention.
00:10:08Tremendous confidence and will to succeed.
00:10:13As a personality, Angel has had many incarnations.
00:10:18Suffice to say that the man who once called himself El Diablo now calls himself the Disciple.
00:10:29As a boxer, his major weapons have always been a good left hook, a sustained attack to the body, a
00:10:38strong competitive will.
00:10:53They had a talent hunt here in Texas to find a ring announcer to appear on the Spanish language channel
00:11:00Univision.
00:11:02And the winner of the talent hunt is the gentleman we'll go to now, ring announcer Lupe Contreras.
00:11:13Ladies and gentlemen, live from Corpus Christi, deep in the heart of Texas, this is the main event.
00:11:22Bob Arum's Top Rank Incorporated, in association with Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing, the undisputed King of Beers, Budweiser, and the
00:11:33heart and soul of boxing, HBO, presents another edition of World Championship Boxing.
00:11:43This is a 12-Round IVF Lightweight Elimination Bout, being sanctioned by the Texas State Department of Licensing, Executive Director
00:11:53William Koontz, Boxing Coordinator Dickie Cole.
00:11:57The judges scoring this bout, Bill Clancy, Dr. Ruben Garcia, and Mark Nelson.
00:12:06The third man inside the ropes in charge of keeping order will be referee Barry Yates.
00:12:14And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is time to find out who is the baddest man in the ring.
00:12:19In the red corner, he steps in wearing yellow trunks trimmed in blue and silver, and weighing in at 135
00:12:30pounds.
00:12:32He has unblemished professional record of 23 wins, no defeats, and 17 of those wins coming by way of knockout.
00:12:42The pride of Coachella, California, Julio the Kid Niaz.
00:12:58And in the blue corner, he steps into the ring wearing golden trunks trimmed in black, weighing in at 134
00:13:08and one-half pounds.
00:13:09As a professional, he has faced some of the biggest names in boxing with a record of 38 wins, just
00:13:16five defeats, one draw, and 29 of his victories coming by way of knockout.
00:13:24From Hobart, Indiana, Angel got Jesus, Manfredi!
00:13:43All right, let's go, fighters!
00:13:45Fighters!
00:13:53All right, gentlemen, instructions are given to you in the dressing room.
00:13:56I expect you to obey my commands at all times.
00:13:58Protect yourselves at all times.
00:14:00Good luck.
00:14:01God bless.
00:14:03If young Diaz is the fighter many people believe he is, he'll win.
00:14:10If he isn't, he won't.
00:14:13That's right, because tonight he has a very tough character on his hands.
00:14:17Manfredi is coming into this fight very well prepared, physically, spiritually, and I think talent-wise, he is a big
00:14:25threat tonight,
00:14:25because he's a veteran, but not an old veteran.
00:14:42And Freddie comes out firing with the left hook,
00:14:46and Diaz immediately begins looking for opportunities to counter.
00:14:55If you've seen Diaz's older brother, Antonio, against perhaps Shane Mosley,
00:14:59or some of the fighters he faced on the way up to the Mosley fight,
00:15:03you've seen Antonio attacking, coming forward, and relentlessly bearing down on his opponents.
00:15:08Julio doesn't fight that way.
00:15:13His style is a mixture of counter-punching and attacking.
00:15:16You know, and Julio had a good amateur background, too.
00:15:19I think he had over 200 amateur fights.
00:15:22He comes from a family of brothers where all of them have been boxing with each other.
00:15:25And I think he started boxing when he was six years old.
00:15:27So he's very well prepared from his family.
00:15:30Menals, but nevertheless, Manfredi is going to take him to the school tonight.
00:15:34I think we're going to see a better Manfredi than we have saw in recent fights.
00:15:41Well, Angel says that he'll be better by simple virtue of the fact that he's fighting at 135 pounds.
00:15:45He claims that at 130 against Corrales, he simply wasn't strong enough.
00:15:49And sure enough, he wasn't strong enough for Corrales, but that would be true of a lot of 130-pounders.
00:15:55Yeah, the guys that he lost to basically were very extremely sharp guys.
00:15:59When you look at Mayweather, Corrales, Stevie Johnson, all these guys were very sharp punchers.
00:16:06Manfredi able to get inside and hit Diaz in the body with the left hook there.
00:16:10Julio Diaz now coming back across the top with jab right cross.
00:16:15One-two combination.
00:16:18Now you see Diaz lower down and jab to the body.
00:16:21Come back upstairs and multiple guys jab upstairs.
00:16:24And here comes Manfredi with his left hook and body attack.
00:16:28Diaz is not moving as much as I expect him to move.
00:16:31He's fighting more on the same tempo and the pattern that Manfredi has usually been very effective with.
00:16:36These are the guys who are moving very fast and keep a distance between them is what usually gives him
00:16:40the problems.
00:16:46Diaz stepping up the activity level now with his jab.
00:16:50And Manfredi with a straight right hand breaks up Diaz's tempo.
00:16:58He has his last two victories over other unbeaten prospects.
00:17:04The last one of whom knocked him down and said perhaps Manfredi thought he'd go out there and test him.
00:17:13Diaz blurts with low blows early.
00:17:16He's been below the Manfredi belt line a couple of times.
00:17:18And has gotten one verbal warning from the referee for it.
00:17:27Good round.
00:17:34Good round.
00:17:40Beautiful round.
00:17:42Stay in there with him, okay?
00:17:44Got a beautiful round, okay?
00:17:46Remember what?
00:17:47Come to the right.
00:17:48Remember, you work on this one.
00:17:49You're going to come to your right so you can give him the right.
00:17:52Okay?
00:17:53Hey, I want you to land that hook on him and come back with a right hand.
00:17:57Hey?
00:17:58Stop being nice to this guy.
00:17:59He's not your friend no more.
00:18:00You understand?
00:18:01Yes, sir.
00:18:01All this is business.
00:18:02Yes, sir.
00:18:03Keep that.
00:18:03Okay?
00:18:04Hey, take control of this guy.
00:18:06You're letting him dictate the fight.
00:18:07I don't want that.
00:18:08All right.
00:18:08I want you to dictate the fight.
00:18:10You make him do what you want.
00:18:11All right?
00:18:12You get up.
00:18:13Good left hand.
00:18:15Early in the round, on the jaw, no particular impact.
00:18:21You heard from Manfredi's trainer, Sam Colonna, says,
00:18:24you're not his friend anymore.
00:18:26Once upon a time, they sparred.
00:18:28He worked in the same gym as in the Palm Springs area,
00:18:35as Diaz and his brothers.
00:18:37That's another thing that Manfredi pointed out.
00:18:39He said he's always been trying to find a place where he would train to do what he thought
00:18:44top professional fighters did, meaning going to Big Bear and out in California.
00:18:49And he went back to Chicago and trained at his old gym where he trained at before,
00:18:54and he was an amateur early in his career.
00:18:55And he seems to be much more comfortable, he said, as a result of working there.
00:18:59He said, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,
00:19:06yes.
00:19:07Rocky box numbers in round one.
00:19:09Diaz threw 55 champs.
00:19:11So, obviously, his plan tonight was to start out boxing behind the champ.
00:19:16And the Manfredi's crowding and they're cutting the ring off,
00:19:19and it's turning out to be more of a physical punching fight as it moves on,
00:19:22because the boxing, I don't think, is going to be a big factor going on.
00:19:26I think it's going to be who gets caught with one of those big shots.
00:19:31Diaz watching Manfredi's feet as he doubles up with the left hook
00:19:34and fires to the body and the head.
00:19:37Straight right hand, now back to the jab.
00:19:39Manfredi sticks a single left,
00:19:41but Diaz is throwing many more punches than Angel
00:19:44in the first couple rounds of the fight.
00:19:47Diaz is actually making the fight.
00:19:48He's punching about three to one.
00:19:51Manfredi's making him do that
00:19:52and kicking off most of the punches on his elbows and gloves.
00:20:24Manfredi's making him do that
00:20:25Manfredi's making him do that
00:20:26and they're making him do that
00:20:28and he's calling him do it what he wants
00:20:35and he's trying to do that
00:20:38and he's trying to kill him.
00:20:44But then he's trying to line up
00:20:46Manfredi's making him do that
00:20:47viaje sound because they're playing
00:20:47Like little kid right with me,
00:20:47kill him i drink a lot,
00:20:54but the order doesn't want him
00:20:54and give him food for everyone.
00:20:54HR's making him do that
00:20:56Diaz is ready to fight because he's busier but as it's moving down the stretch you can figure that Manfredo
00:21:01is going to be a much more bigger factor going down the line because it seems like he's holding everything
00:21:05back and I don't know if Diaz can continue to the punch at the ratio that he's punching compared to
00:21:11Manfredo and last up and be strong going down the stretch.
00:21:17But Diaz is mostly just trying to make contact, Emmanuel. He's hunting a lot behind these punches. Perhaps because he's
00:21:25aware he's going to need some reserves in the tank later on.
00:21:28Absolutely.
00:21:29Mark your calendars for these upcoming shows. Thursday night at 8 p.m. Catch Inside the NFL, the longest running
00:21:35show on cable. Now in its 25th season. I've seen it three times this week.
00:21:39October 16th, don't miss the next edition of Real Sports with Brian Gumbel. November 10th, World Championship Boxing returns and
00:21:46Floyd Mayweather defends his 130-pound title against Jesus Chavez.
00:21:50And a week later, HBO Pay-Per-View brings you the rematch of Hasim Rahman versus Lennox Lewis and Emmanuel
00:21:57Stewart for the Heavyweight Championship of the World. HBO, the heart and soul of boxing.
00:22:04You understand? I want you to take it away from him.
00:22:07Yes, sir.
00:22:13Okay? Easy, baby. Patience. That's all we need. Patience.
00:22:19Julio Diaz threw 125 punches in the second round.
00:22:24And didn't look like he was exerting himself. There was a certain relaxed maturity about him in the ring, not
00:22:31only because he started when he was six years old,
00:22:37but also that's just who he is. He met his future wife in the eighth grade. He married her at
00:22:4418. They have two children. He's not 22 yet.
00:22:49And he says it settles him down and keeps his mind on his business, which is what we're watching.
00:22:56And I'd like to note also that he trained at his gym where he's been training at all of his
00:23:00life as a kid in Coachella.
00:23:02So both guys trained at home, so to say, instead of going to train again for this fight.
00:23:10And Freddy, trying to punch with fury, Diaz has simply relied on his fluidity and constant tempo.
00:23:18Stepping up the pressure just a little bit now with power punches in the second round.
00:23:24125 punches in round two. 74 of them were cast. Diaz is very fluid with the left hand.
00:23:35You know, we'll have to say it in box. If your other guy keeps throwing at all the punches and
00:23:39you don't punch back sooner or later,
00:23:40this bandit numbers game, he's got to land something that's going to be effective.
00:23:44And at this stage right now, Diaz is doing all of the punching.
00:23:47A little trickle of blood from the left nostril of Julio Diaz, probably the product of Manfredi's straight right hand.
00:23:58The punch that I think that Manfredi better look out for is that left uppercut.
00:24:02He's keeping his hands up tight, but I think Diaz is going to pretty soon start him down and start
00:24:07shooting shots up between the gloves.
00:24:10And there it is. Fires the left uppercut on cue.
00:24:44Fires the left uppercut.
00:24:46In the gold trunks, Angel Manfredi, also in gold trunks, 26 years old.
00:24:53Angel firing behind his tattoos and landing one big left uppercut about 20 seconds to go.
00:24:59But Diaz throwing most of the punches as he does in this exchange.
00:25:05Diaz is fighting very relaxed to the degree that he's punching a lot, but he's not exerting himself too much.
00:25:11Knowing that Manfredi is going to be stronger going down the stretch.
00:25:14It becomes a body-punching exhibition, and Diaz doubles up the both the right hand and the left hand.
00:25:20And Manfredi doubling his left upp and chopping over the top of the right.
00:25:43How did you feel? How are you feeling right now?
00:25:48You're going to turn around a little bit, okay?
00:25:50And this one maybe a little bit, maybe not, but if it doesn't work, you're going to turn right right
00:25:54away.
00:25:55Okay, you're going to turn right right away, and we're going to see if you can push him back a
00:25:58little bit, okay?
00:25:59But not stay.
00:26:00Go!
00:26:01Get around you!
00:26:04Close your eye, close your eye.
00:26:06Feel good.
00:26:07All right, let's pick it up now.
00:26:08You feel good.
00:26:09You're loose now.
00:26:09Let your punches float.
00:26:10Yeah.
00:26:11You let this guy get up first.
00:26:12You got to bend them knees, and you get up first.
00:26:14Let's go now.
00:26:17All right, let's go.
00:26:20You feel real beautiful.
00:26:22No, no, no, no.
00:26:28You know, going into a different fight, fighters come in with plans, and this particular stage,
00:26:32I would say that Manfredi is being more successful in making the fight be the way that he wants it
00:26:38is,
00:26:38more so than Diaz.
00:26:39We'll get to more of that in a moment.
00:26:41Harold Lederman, how do you have it through three?
00:26:42Okay, Jim, I got a three to nothing, 30 to 27, Julio Diaz.
00:26:47Jim, this is a clinic.
00:26:48I'm throwing left jams.
00:26:49This guy throws three, four, five jams before he pulls his arm back.
00:26:53Absolutely unbelievable.
00:26:55Never throws one punch at a time.
00:26:57Angel Manfredi just keeps walking into it.
00:26:59Julio Diaz, jamming him to death, piling up points.
00:27:02I think this is what the judges are looking at.
00:27:04Three to nothing, Julio Diaz.
00:27:05And there's a hard right hand by Manfredi, most authoritative punch of the fight so far.
00:27:10All right, so Harold's scorecourt has Diaz winning all three of the first three rounds,
00:27:15and you say Manfredi is getting the fight where he wants it to be.
00:27:18Yes, even though I think he's losing the fight, but he's getting it.
00:27:21Well, wouldn't you consider he can't outbox Diaz?
00:27:24His best shot is to physically walk him down, block as many punches as he can,
00:27:28and to try to catch him with punches, but he's not expecting it.
00:27:35So what I'm saying is Manfredi's here to win by knockout.
00:27:38Win by knockout.
00:27:39And it's a big risk because when you permit another guy to throw on the punches,
00:27:43you know, he can still land any particular punch and then turn the fight around.
00:27:46But he's willing to take that risk.
00:27:49I think they're right-hand by Manfredi, but he's just getting outworked.
00:27:55The danger of fighting a guy like Manfredi is sometimes he punches so seldom
00:28:00that you don't even expect him to punch,
00:28:02and that's when he can come out and catch him with a punch you don't expect.
00:28:04But he can put punches together, and he just landed another solid left hook.
00:28:08So Manfredi has landed two big shots in this round,
00:28:11a right-hand and a left hook, testing Diaz's chin
00:28:14and bloodying his nose one more time.
00:28:17J.O., J.O., J.O., J.O., J.O.
00:28:23chanting Julio, Julio, Julio.
00:28:30Manfredi is the better known of the two
00:28:32because of his previous exposure in the sport
00:28:34and got more publicity in the local papers this week.
00:28:39Good body shots by Diaz Benz.
00:28:54Diaz is punched out, beginning to slow down just a little bit now
00:28:58as Manfredi closes the distance,
00:29:00and Diaz lands a low blow, and the referee subtracts a point.
00:29:05That's unusual, I've even given him a warning.
00:29:08He warned him in the first round.
00:29:09Oh, okay, I didn't see that.
00:29:10But normally you'd get two verbal warnings
00:29:12prior to the deduction of a point,
00:29:14and I believe this was one warning
00:29:16followed by the deduction of a point.
00:29:18But it was a real low blow.
00:29:21It was a low blow.
00:29:22It was down around Yucatine over the water here.
00:29:24Yep.
00:29:28So that tightens up the scorecards just a little bit.
00:29:31Diaz turns southpaw a moment, Charlie.
00:29:35And stays southpaw for the time being.
00:29:39And then Freddie pats him on the butt.
00:29:41Yeah, Diaz should have enough points at the bakery.
00:29:43He probably can afford to lose a little bit of a round or two.
00:29:46But if Manfredi had won that round
00:29:48and had the deduction in points,
00:29:50that could have made this fight be a very close fight already.
00:29:52Don't run back too much, okay?
00:29:53Because you're going to give him a little distance now.
00:29:56Remember I told you the other round,
00:29:57let's see if you can push him back.
00:29:58Try it.
00:29:59If it doesn't work, then you...
00:30:00Okay.
00:30:04And get that right hand in there.
00:30:06Don't be weak.
00:30:07He's getting weak.
00:30:08He's getting weak.
00:30:08Well, let's go.
00:30:09You've got to start stepping it up.
00:30:10I don't want him getting too far ahead of us.
00:30:13Chew down, baby.
00:30:13Chew down.
00:30:14Close your eyes.
00:30:18And Freddie calls his style patient aggressiveness.
00:30:23And there you see the aggressive part of that.
00:30:26Now the low blow later in the round.
00:30:31Just a poorly delivered blow.
00:30:34Not deliberate.
00:30:36And that happens often when a guy keeps his hands up sometimes
00:30:39by getting up here.
00:30:40And his elbows almost push the punch down.
00:30:46Round five of a scheduled 12 rounds.
00:30:49Dias and Manfredi.
00:30:52Lee Espinosa and Diaz's corner told him
00:30:55to try to get a distance between Manfredi's fighting
00:30:58him too close.
00:30:58And they get a little space where he can operate more.
00:31:00But Manfredi is tightening up the gap.
00:31:03And it's going to be a big factor of Diaz getting caught
00:31:07with one of those short punches sometimes
00:31:08as he's pulling out.
00:31:10And Diaz told Espinosa that he thought
00:31:12he could push Manfredi back with the jab.
00:31:14And Espinosa said, okay, try it.
00:31:15But clearly Espinosa wants him to increase the distance
00:31:20somehow or another.
00:31:22Whether with his feet or with his hands.
00:31:27Big left hook by Manfredi.
00:31:29And there's a cut over the right eye of Diaz.
00:31:32Big cut.
00:31:33And it looks like a bad one.
00:31:34Yep.
00:31:35And I think it was the product of that short left hook.
00:31:37Yep.
00:31:38Yes.
00:31:41So now there's blood coming from Diaz's knock.
00:31:44And Manfredi has a cut above his right eye.
00:31:49And I think all of those cuts came from punches, not from butts.
00:31:52Absolutely.
00:31:53Haven't seen a butt.
00:32:03So now there's a new strategic urgency in both corners.
00:32:06We're midway through round five.
00:32:08Julio Diaz, the hot young prospect, got off to an excellent start in the fight.
00:32:13But increasingly, as Emmanuel Stewart suggested would be the case, it becomes a brawl.
00:32:18And the more it's a brawl, the more it favors Manfredi, at least for the moment.
00:32:23I know that Manfredi's got a very good experience cut, man.
00:32:26One of the best in the business in Jim Strickland.
00:32:32And Diaz is in new territory here for a young fighter.
00:32:40And now the referee.
00:32:45Well, here's something we haven't seen before.
00:32:48Takes Manfredi to the ring, doctor.
00:32:49Well, they're taking both fighters to the ring, doctor, I believe.
00:32:52This is okay.
00:32:55Hey, doctor!
00:32:56I've never seen that.
00:32:59Alternate trips to the doctor.
00:33:07All right, you're going to have to walk in, man.
00:33:09I mean, we're on top of you to walk out.
00:33:10Come on.
00:33:23He's fighting as though he feels the urgency.
00:33:26Yeah, but he didn't land one of those blows.
00:33:28Manfredi blocked them all.
00:33:29Blocked them all.
00:33:30And I think Diaz realized that that's when he just cut off.
00:33:39Diaz is not going to the body enough.
00:33:43Manfredi holding his hands so high.
00:33:45He must go to the body.
00:33:47I don't know if he's in the emotion of this moment if he is thinking of that.
00:33:56He should go to the body, but he should also throw more punches up between the middle.
00:33:59And when he jabs, he should jab with a stiff jab to the degree that if Manfredi blocks him still,
00:34:05there's a rocking back and keep him off balance instead of using that pawing jab.
00:34:10I guess I'm mentioning that because now we're seeing what happens when a young fighter goes in against a young
00:34:18veteran.
00:34:19Young veteran.
00:34:25Listen, we've got to start stepping it up.
00:34:27You understand?
00:34:28It's much going to get back during the fight.
00:34:30Listen, we've got to start stepping it up.
00:34:31Throw that right hand.
00:34:32Throw it.
00:34:33He's open for it.
00:34:34Yeah.
00:34:34You've got to get off.
00:34:36He's setting me up on it.
00:34:38He's tired, Angel.
00:34:39He's tired.
00:34:40Come on.
00:34:40Don't let him touch his butt.
00:34:41Hey, start picking it up.
00:34:44Okay.
00:34:45Okay.
00:34:45Turn softball.
00:34:46Remember, you did pretty good in softball, okay?
00:34:49And then go, whoa.
00:34:51You've got to put this guy back a little bit.
00:34:53Come on.
00:34:54You did it right there when I told you go to the right and then give him the right hand.
00:34:57You did it.
00:34:57Boom.
00:34:58You know?
00:34:59There's a left hand inside.
00:35:01And now the left hand that seemed to open up the eye of Diaz as he brushes away the blood
00:35:08immediately.
00:35:09And then a short left hook by Diaz does the same.
00:35:17Turnabout.
00:35:18Blood for blood.
00:35:20Diaz threw 116 punches in round five but landed only 22 of them.
00:35:25His connect percentage going down.
00:35:27Manfredi beginning to throw more.
00:35:29Through nearly 70 punches in that round.
00:35:32You heard Manfredi's corner asking for more right hands.
00:35:37He has in the southpaw stance again now.
00:35:40This time he begins a round in the southpaw stance.
00:35:44Perhaps trying to protect his eye from Manfredi's left hook.
00:35:49And now here comes Angel stalking to the body.
00:35:59When Angel Manfredi gets to your rib cage, he digs hard.
00:36:06A committed body puncher.
00:36:08This is a very, very tough test for Diaz for a young fighter.
00:36:12And getting tougher by the minute.
00:36:13Getting tougher because he's fighting a veteran fighter but not a shot fighter.
00:36:18And in fact, Manfredi may be fighting better than he's ever followed at any time in his career.
00:36:21Incidentally, you mentioned the good cut man in Manfredi's corner, Jim Strickman.
00:36:25Miguel Diaz in Julio Diaz's corner is also excellent at the craft.
00:36:30I didn't mention as much because Miguel Diaz's cut, it seemed like his cut had coagulated much faster than Manfredi.
00:36:38Manfredi's was fooling much real.
00:36:40But Miguel Diaz is one of the best cut men probably in the history of boxing.
00:36:48So both guys have the kind of man in their corner who can sustain them through the fight
00:36:53if they don't get too much damage further by more blows.
00:37:00You know what I'm saying.
00:37:06Southpaw stance again for Diaz.
00:37:08Is he doing this to protect his eye, Manny?
00:37:10No, I think his corner was sort of, they thought at least, he was fairly effective in that position.
00:37:14So they told him to try that again.
00:37:16You know, maybe to keep a boy and get caught with the left hook.
00:37:19Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
00:37:24no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
00:37:28no, no, no, no, no.
00:37:32Yes.
00:37:38Angel, man, Freddie gives you your money's worth.
00:37:41That's the result?
00:37:42Yes.
00:37:42And if he ever moves his head and have it in the wrong position when one of those bombs are
00:37:46coming, he's going to get caught dead on a chain.
00:38:06halfway through a scheduled 12 rounds both fighters cut and bleeding both fighters scoring good fight
00:38:30that's not working
00:38:31you gotta start throwing that jab right hand he's open for it
00:38:34let him get off first you gotta get off first
00:38:37come around wayne
00:38:43you gotta go
00:38:44pow pow two hard times okay
00:38:48gotta listen gotta turn left it softball softball okay
00:38:52softball once in a while
00:38:54okay
00:38:56okay
00:39:07newly hired advisor to angel manfredi perhaps moving toward a promotional relationship with manfredi
00:39:13and as soon as manfredi was cut in the last round ray was up on his feet looking very concerned
00:39:19fascinatingly he's sitting right next to bob arum who is the promoter of young diaz and arum was
00:39:24already on his feet worried about his fighter
00:39:27you guys were standing shoulder to shoulder
00:39:29worrying about two different fighters
00:39:31arnold
00:39:32how have you got it through six
00:39:33okay jim i still like the busier guy five to one 58 55 julio diaz
00:39:39of course it became a 10-8 round in round four but julio diaz lost a point to the low
00:39:43blow now listen jim this is very important one of these guys has got to take a commanding lead this
00:39:49fight because it looks as though it may not go 12 because of those accidental headbutts
00:39:52we're beyond the fourth round if the fight gets stopped because of the cuts they'd go to the scorecards at
00:39:58that point they would score the partial round if it gets stopped in the middle of a round
00:40:03those cuts were not caused by headbutts harold they were caused by punches
00:40:08okay referee barry yates indicated that both cuts were caused by accidental headbutts
00:40:14well then referee barry yates was one but of course his official ruling is the ruling
00:40:20that's what matters so if yates thinks they were caused by accidental butts then that's what's going to determine the
00:40:26potential outcome of the fight
00:40:34now you heard angel manfredi's corner asking him basically to step it up and be more active
00:40:40but in doing so he'd possibly leave himself exposed a little bit too
00:40:44so far his defensive style has probably been very effective and problems happened to getting hurt earlier
00:40:49he has back in the southpaw stance
00:40:53he has banging pretty effectively with the right hand from that southpaw stance
00:40:56now he turns the other shoulder back around
00:41:16he has sticking to it
00:41:18yes he has and he's showing tenacity
00:41:20and he seems to have full control over his percentages and his thinking
00:41:24he seems to be fighting extremely well for an inexperienced guy so to say
00:41:27this is one of his seven rounds
00:41:29this is his best round since the cuts appeared that's the turn
00:41:32his concentration seems to be very good
00:41:37his left hand is so good
00:41:38that the only real reason i can think of
00:41:40for him to be in this southpaw stance
00:41:42is to try to take away manfredi's left hook
00:41:44yes and he is very effective at this time
00:41:46for evidently
00:41:48no
00:41:50no
00:41:50no
00:41:50no
00:42:09trading the right a lot
00:42:13Diaz's sheer energy level
00:42:15the difference in the round
00:42:19still to come the replay of
00:42:21Bernard Hopkins destruction of
00:42:22Felix Trinidad it was a
00:42:25shocker it wouldn't have been
00:42:26a tremendous shocker for
00:42:27Hopkins to win the fight but
00:42:29for Hopkins to dominate from
00:42:30start to finish and knock
00:42:32Trinidad out as he did stunning
00:42:34stay tuned
00:42:42once you start doubling that
00:42:43right hand up to the body when
00:42:44he switches softball
00:42:46right in his face and throw
00:42:47the right hand right off
00:42:48anything more man
00:42:54there you go
00:42:58he's just swinging up
00:43:09go go
00:43:12we're in Memorial Coliseum in
00:43:14Corpus Christi Texas
00:43:16lightweight prospect Julio Diaz with his back to you fighting against veteran Angel Manfredi
00:43:22Diaz has been the more fluid and the more active fighter has governed the tempo of the fight for the
00:43:28most part
00:43:29Manfredi has landed some big shots both fighters are cut over the eyes and although our cameras seem to show
00:43:37that the cuts for the result of punches the referee has ruled that they're the product of accidental butts
00:43:45Diaz continues to fight out of the southpaw dance late in the fight
00:43:57you know what has happened in this fight at this stage now Diaz seem to have got his second wind
00:44:02addressed it to everything and Manfredi's got in the pattern of not punching and seem like now which is the
00:44:09time for him to step it up it's hard to do so because he just got in the habit of
00:44:13just walking in without punching and as a result he can't seem to get his float away
00:44:17hard left hand shot by Manfredi Diaz takes it well comes back with a combination of his own
00:44:24and Freddy blocking the shots to the body Diaz works upstairs Manfredi firing his own body combination
00:45:06and he has been traded back and up a little bit more it seemed like he's being a little sort
00:45:11of just punching as he was in the beginning and backing away he seems to be more physical and Christian
00:45:16Manfredi
00:45:17right before he was always backing up even though he was throwing a lot of punches but back and away
00:45:23as he was punching
00:45:23indeed the biggest difference in the fight through eight rounds Emmanuel is that Diaz has shown you
00:45:28he can do two or three or four different things against Manfredi and Angel can really only do one thing
00:45:33that's correct to cover up cover up and then to explode in spots but now I think Diaz has gotten
00:45:38a little comfortable now in the fight
00:45:48and as we get ready to go back to the corners Manny another thing that's happened here is that our
00:45:51viewers have gotten a great chance to see two cut men really doing their work on the pressure
00:45:56two of the best yes two of the best yes Miguel Diaz is known as a trainer at a cut
00:46:02men and Jim Strickland used to be a pharmacist
00:46:05did he really hell yes he was a farmer or something he knows a little bit about what he's mixing
00:46:09up
00:46:10this has become a chapter of ER
00:46:22now the only chemical either cut man can use is a solution of adrenaline mixed with water
00:46:27no there's adrenaline chloride uh one one thousand sometimes they mix it up with one ten thousand which is
00:46:33there's Abateen and there's Abateen and those are all legitimate uh months off solution is the one that's illegal because
00:46:42it's an iron base
00:46:43and sometimes inexperienced cut men accidentally could get some in the eye and can permanently uh damage the light so
00:46:50that's why it's that long
00:46:50there's only three uh only three legal solutions but in England often you can only use adrenaline one one thousand
00:46:59punches thrown per round and you can see that in the last two rounds
00:47:06well I'm not sure that the graphic is correct in the last two rounds I believe it is Diaz who's
00:47:10thrown
00:47:11104 and 92 punches and Manfredi who would have thrown only 11 and 12.
00:47:23oh
00:47:27now this is the tag when Manfredi should step it up if he doesn't do it now he never will
00:47:32on he's got to step
00:47:33it up a little bit and it's interesting Diaz seem to have come out with an urgency that he needs
00:47:38to
00:47:38to step it up a little bit more.
00:47:52Manfredi does everything hard in life.
00:47:55Drives hard.
00:47:59Family's hard.
00:48:02Tattoos hard.
00:48:04Trains hard.
00:48:06He just doesn't punch hard enough, it seems, at this level.
00:48:11And now referee Barry Yates is going to deduct a point
00:48:14from Julio Diaz for low blows.
00:48:17And that will tighten the fight up one more time.
00:48:20Especially if Manfredi wins this round.
00:48:23And that's the second point deduction for low blows,
00:48:25so Diaz has to be very careful now
00:48:27to avoid disqualification.
00:48:30The young man has put himself in dangerous territory.
00:48:33You know, Manfredi don't have to worry about that.
00:48:35He just don't punch too often, so...
00:48:37He won't have to lay it to the low blows.
00:48:42So this becomes a test of Diaz's resilience,
00:48:46of his intelligence,
00:48:47his ability to keep his wits in a pressure situation.
00:48:50He's got to realize now that he has to stay away from low blows.
00:48:59And you can see that he wants to keep throwing to the body.
00:49:02And, you know, the blows were low blows,
00:49:05but they weren't what we call really bad low blows.
00:49:07They weren't at the bottom of the cup.
00:49:08It was near the top of the center of the cup.
00:49:10Which, in some cases, I would rather have my box to get hit there
00:49:13than to get hit directly in the solo place.
00:49:15But he might have to get through nine more minutes of this fight, Emmanuel,
00:49:18without throwing a single low blow
00:49:19or risk disqualification
00:49:21in a fight that he's probably leading on the scorecards.
00:49:25Yes.
00:49:25And now Manfredi lands a big right-hand shot.
00:49:31And Diaz stops punching for the moment.
00:49:35And elects to hold on.
00:49:37If he loses this round,
00:49:39it's definitely going to make a big factor, I think, in this score.
00:49:41He's going down the stretch.
00:49:43Manfredi showing the burst of energy,
00:49:45realizing the chance to take a 10-8 round.
00:49:48That's right.
00:49:58That right hand that hit Diaz didn't have as much effect as it looked
00:50:02because he rolled his head on it.
00:50:04No, it was the earlier right hand that hurt him.
00:50:06The one earlier in the round.
00:50:07Yes.
00:50:08But that one he rolled it off.
00:50:14Diaz goes back to the southpaw stance.
00:50:17Manfredi hasn't really seemed to solve it.
00:50:38Good round, and if Manfredi won it,
00:50:40he's totally back in the fight.
00:50:48Rebs, can you see those kingly shots?
00:50:52Trainer Lee Espinosa, furious at Rebs
00:50:55and he's going to be Barry Yates.
00:50:56He's going to pay for this.
00:50:57Make him pay for this.
00:50:57Come on.
00:50:58Come on, Coulos.
00:50:59Let's get rid of this.
00:51:00It's a crime baby.
00:51:02Come on, man.
00:51:02We don't like crime babies here.
00:51:05All right, look at the top lightweights
00:51:07as we watch them work the cuts again.
00:51:09Hey, stop picking it up to this guy.
00:51:11Work his body.
00:51:13Castillo is considered the lightweight champion.
00:51:16Spadafore has one of the belts.
00:51:18Juan Lescano is a top contender.
00:51:22The winner of this fight would become a mandatory
00:51:25with Spadafore, but may in fact wind up fighting Castillo.
00:51:29But be that as it may, Emmanuel, from what you see of Diaz,
00:51:34do you think he's ready for a title fight, or does he need more seasoning?
00:51:40It's very difficult to say fight a guy like Manfred because Manfred is presenting the worst type of opponent that
00:51:46you can have a young fighter fight.
00:51:47He's a lot of pressure and coming up with extremely tight defense.
00:51:51But this is a character-building fight for Diaz.
00:51:54And, you know, someone else that stands back and fights at a distance and doesn't apply the pressure would be
00:51:59a lot different.
00:52:00One thing Diaz has-
00:52:02In other words, you don't have an answer.
00:52:03In other words, you don't have an answer.
00:52:03Yes, I don't have an answer.
00:52:05Diaz is in the wrong situation for me to judge tonight.
00:52:08Harold, how do you have a 3-9?
00:52:10Okay, Jim, 86, 83, 6-2, what even, Julio Diaz.
00:52:15I just think the busier guy for Diggies to win the fight, even though I'm watching Angel Manfredi get real
00:52:20busy here.
00:52:21Julio Diaz keeps working that left jab, going southpaw, working a right jab in the straight left.
00:52:25I don't think he's piling up points.
00:52:26Round nine has to be a 9-9 round.
00:52:29I think Diaz won it, but the referee took the point.
00:52:37Round nine was pretty close.
00:52:39If Manfredi won it, you got a very close fight on your hands.
00:52:42No question.
00:52:47Emmanuel Diaz hasn't shown me any punching power yet.
00:52:50No, he hasn't.
00:52:51But I guess he realizes that before he even lets his punch go,
00:52:53that Manfredi's got his hands held up so high that he doesn't even let him go with power.
00:52:58But right now, Manfredi's getting closer.
00:53:00He should be punching more power with his right hand protection.
00:53:07Diaz back in his conventional stance and back to doubling and tripling his jab,
00:53:11trying to keep up the tempo against Manfredi.
00:53:14Diaz getting away with a body punch.
00:53:16It didn't wander low.
00:53:19Manfredi looks good in spots, but as soon as he lands something,
00:53:23Diaz comes right back and takes a play away from him.
00:53:26He never would have let Manfredi get a sustained attack.
00:53:30Manfredi's landed a couple of good shots in this round.
00:53:33Diaz doubling and tripling with the left.
00:53:36Continues to govern the tempo of the fight.
00:53:45Giuseppe pretzies to win!

00:53:58Juan Felipe pretzies to win!
00:53:59Mar legends!
00:54:02Jester
00:54:02Cornelions are on.
00:54:06Jester
00:54:06Diaz, true to form, has done a brilliant job.
00:54:09Yes.
00:54:10In fact, Manfredo's cut has simply been the same
00:54:13from the first moment that it was cut.
00:54:15It's never changed that much more.
00:54:16And then for the most part, once he got to the corner,
00:54:19Diaz's cut coagulated right away, and it's been the same.
00:54:24It was a tough fight for a 21-year-old to be in.
00:54:28Just what I was thinking, and if they go beyond this run,
00:54:32Julio Diaz will be going to the 11th and 12th rounds
00:54:34for the very first time in his career.
00:54:37Manfredi has been there three times.
00:54:48Julio, when he goes like this, go to the referee.
00:54:52Come on.
00:54:53You're not what you're saying, though.
00:54:54Yeah, no, you're not what you're saying, though.
00:54:58You got him.
00:54:59You got him.
00:54:59You got him.
00:55:03Can you get away from King the Puncher?
00:55:10Hey, we need these rounds.
00:55:11You got to start picking it up.
00:55:12You understand?
00:55:13Yes, sir.
00:55:15Let's go.
00:55:15You got to let them go.
00:55:16Keep punching.
00:55:17Yes, sir.
00:55:19I heard him that round, sir.
00:55:21Yeah, but you got to do it more.
00:55:22Yes, sir.
00:55:22Give me that right hand off the middle.
00:55:24I want that Tyson punch.
00:55:25You know what you haven't been doing?
00:55:26You haven't been stepping around.
00:55:27Close your eyes.
00:55:34Come on, baby.
00:55:36Come on, baby.
00:55:44Come on, baby.
00:55:46We're going to have more than 2,000 punches thrown in this fight as Julio Diaz goes to
00:55:51the 11th round for the very first time in his career.
00:55:54He's already thrown more than 1,100 punches in the fight.
00:55:57And Freddy has thrown more than 800.
00:56:00Both guys in great shape.
00:56:02It's a slug fast in Corpus Christi.
00:56:04Come on, let's go.
00:56:16Although Diaz has thrown nearly 1,150 punches now, very few of him have been at full product.
00:56:23Most of them he's just trying to connect.
00:56:25Yes.
00:56:26He cannot find a way to penetrate the defense.
00:56:29I mean, he's been unsuccessful at this point all night.
00:56:32In fact, the cleanest punches have been landed by Manfredi.
00:56:35He just hasn't did it often now.
00:56:37Punch!
00:56:39Come back.
00:56:40Come back.
00:56:43Come back.
00:56:44Again, Diaz flirts with a low blow.
00:56:47He was on the belt line.
00:56:50And Freddy trying to come back over the top.
00:56:55Come on!
00:56:57Come on!
00:56:58Come on!
00:56:59Come on!
00:57:00Come on!
00:57:02Come on!
00:57:09Come on!
00:57:12Break!
00:57:13Break!
00:57:13Come on!
00:57:41Manfred is now starting to punch with the same amount of power and force that Diaz and
00:57:47he can't afford that.
00:57:48He's got a punch with big power because I feel he's probably behind in punching.
00:57:51So when he does that open up, he should do it with a lot more force.
00:57:55How many times have you seen a guy throw 110 or 120 punches in the 11th round of a fight
00:58:01in which he's already averaged 100 punches per round?
00:58:05Julio Diaz has amazing stamina.
00:58:14He has again splurts with a low blow.
00:58:17Could have gotten him BQ.
00:58:19I guess after he realized he can't hit anything on top, he's just trying to take a gamble.
00:58:23Hard right hand shot by Manfredi.
00:58:25He has stunned again, but he comes back.
00:58:27Best punch off the fight.
00:58:49First time I've seen fighters hug after the 11th round.
00:58:57You see something new every time.
00:59:00Both guys are putting on a display of martyrism right now.
00:59:07Step with that right hand. Step with that right hand.
00:59:09Step with that right hand. Step with that right hand on the top.
00:59:10And they have to ground. That's strong. We need this round. Let's go.
00:59:14We need this round, Angel. We got to get this round.
00:59:16That's not like when he starts moving.
00:59:19Boom!
00:59:21Boom!
00:59:22Okay.
00:59:25It's the last round, and you're going to lose a point.
00:59:28Boom!
00:59:37Good fight.
00:59:39And both fighters deserve the applause of the crowd as they begin the 12th round.
00:59:50Fight may be on the table.
00:59:56Harold, how do you have it going to the 12th?
00:59:58Okay, Jim. I don't have it on the table.
01:00:00I got Julio Diaz.
01:00:02106-101.
01:00:038-2-1 even.
01:00:05I just think he's out working Angel McGrady.
01:00:07Lost the 8th round because the guy was close,
01:00:09and Angel out-slugged him.
01:00:11But other than that, it just seems to be Julio Diaz's work rate.
01:00:14But head off these corner men.
01:00:16Hit him with the Tyson punch.
01:00:17That has to get down in a lure of great, great statements by corner men.
01:00:23What, asking a lightweight to throw a Mike Tyson punch?
01:00:26There you go.
01:00:44Tough, grueling, give-and-take fight.
01:00:47It's a tough, tough fight for both guys.
01:00:50And particularly Diaz, being a young fighter,
01:00:52he had to throw about 4-to-1 ratio in punches the first part of the fight,
01:00:57which he really spent a lot of energy.
01:00:59But he's still holding on and out-punching Manfredi at the end of the fight.
01:01:03And if there's a judge at ringside who really favors the harder, cleaner shots,
01:01:06he may have Manfredi considerably closer in the fight than does Howard.
01:01:11Oh, absolutely.
01:01:11That's classic.
01:01:12Yes, he did.
01:01:13Cleaner punches and harder punches.
01:01:15Just not enough of him, probably.
01:01:24It took Manfredi a few rounds to catch up to Diaz.
01:01:29But since the middle rounds, he has given a good account of himself.
01:01:32Julio has continued to press the action,
01:01:35and has shown remarkable stamina and courage for a young fighter.
01:01:40Yes, he's never at any time that Manfredi
01:01:42take control over the fight.
01:01:49Manfredi having one of his busiest rounds here.
01:01:52And Diaz momentarily knocks Manfredi off balance with a right.
01:01:57Angel comes right back.
01:02:00And he's coming back punching, too.
01:02:02He's not just walking in.
01:02:06Dangerous last 30 seconds for Julio Diaz.
01:02:15Out getting their money's worth in Corpus Christi.
01:02:19And so are you out there.
01:02:21He's coming back.
01:02:22Those fighters have left nothing outside the ring.
01:02:40A close lockdown.
01:02:44And a sportsman like Han for two fighters who gave it all.
01:02:51I believe that Diaz won the fight.
01:02:54I also believe that his handlers should think long and hard before they push him too hard.
01:03:07Is that another way of saying you don't think he's ready for a tight shot?
01:03:10You know, he might have the talent to beat somebody up there.
01:03:14When you get there, you've got to fight tough guys.
01:03:17What's the rush?
01:03:19I'm a little conservative where these things go.
01:03:22He didn't show that much punching power tonight and a lot of other things.
01:03:25But it was a very tough guy to fight regardless.
01:03:27Well, in case the cards are close, let's take a look at two moments which could influence the competitive outcome
01:03:35of the fight.
01:03:36In round four, after having been warned about low blows in round one, Julio Diaz landed that left below the
01:03:43belt and was penalized.
01:03:44And then in round nine, a second time, Diaz lost a point for a low blow, also with the left
01:03:52hand.
01:03:53So, having had two points deducted on the scorecards, Diaz must now hope that his greater activity level and more
01:04:02fluid boxing style carried the day with the judges as opposed to Mancretti's intermittent clean hard punches.
01:04:08And that's what it comes down to.
01:04:11It's interesting, nowadays, when a fighter tells a referee that he's been hit, the referee seems to follow orders of
01:04:17the fighters nowadays and don't use their own judgment in most cases.
01:04:22Jesus, Celeste, Marina, Angel, I love you.
01:04:25Mommy, uh-huh.
01:04:27Yeah, baby.
01:04:28We did it.
01:04:29We did it.
01:04:30I love you.
01:04:31I love you.
01:04:32I love you.
01:04:33Jesus lives forever.
01:04:35He changed my life and he can change yours.
01:04:36He's done one.
01:04:39I love you, man.
01:04:42Angel Manfredi managed by his wife, Yvette.
01:04:46His parents to three children.
01:04:54He couldn't touch me.
01:04:55I was blocking everything.
01:04:57He couldn't hit me.
01:05:00And to some degree that's true
01:05:02He did block a lot of shots
01:05:03He blocked most of the punches
01:05:04But Diaz threw so many of them
01:05:09More than 1,300 punches in the mouth
01:05:11Thrown by Diaz
01:05:12If you actually scored clean punches
01:05:15And power punches
01:05:17Manfredo would probably win
01:05:18We'll see
01:05:28Well, they took a big chance
01:05:30Putting 21-year-old Julio Diaz
01:05:32In against the veteran Angel Manfredi
01:05:36Right now, it appears that
01:05:37They're having a little trouble
01:05:54Ring announcer Lupe Contreras
01:05:56Waiting for the scorecards
01:05:58Here in Texas
01:06:03Manfredi hoping for the biggest win
01:06:06Of his career
01:06:07And now the ring announcer's ready
01:06:09Larry, let's go to Lupe Contreras
01:06:10And find out if Manfredi
01:06:12Got the biggest win of his career
01:06:15Ladies and gentlemen
01:06:16After 12 rounds of boxing
01:06:18We have a split decision
01:06:24Judge Mark Nelson
01:06:26Scores about
01:06:28115
01:06:29To 112
01:06:31For Manfredi
01:06:37Judge Ruben Garcia
01:06:40Scores about
01:06:41114
01:06:43To 112
01:06:44For Diaz
01:06:49And Judge Bill Clancy
01:06:51Scores about
01:06:52114
01:06:54To 112
01:06:56For the winner
01:06:57By split decision
01:07:02Angel
01:07:05Manfredi
01:07:24So Bob Arum's gamble
01:07:26That young Julio Diaz
01:07:29Had enough stuff
01:07:30To get past the veteran
01:07:32Manfredi
01:07:33Comes a cropper
01:07:34In Corpus Christi
01:07:35And Ray Leonard's choice
01:07:36To back Manfredi
01:07:38Turns out to be a good one
01:07:39As Angel wins
01:07:41Despite these numbers
01:07:43Which will favor
01:07:44For the other fighter
01:07:47Diaz
01:07:48Throwing nearly 100
01:07:49Or landing nearly 100 more punches
01:07:51Than Manfredi
01:07:52Throwing
01:07:53Nearly 400 punches more
01:07:56Or actually a little more
01:07:57Than 300 punches more
01:07:58And Diaz connecting
01:08:00At a slightly higher percentage
01:08:02But as we mentioned
01:08:03Manfredi landed
01:08:04The harder punches
01:08:05And
01:08:06Ultimately
01:08:07Emmanuel Stewart
01:08:08The difference in the bout
01:08:09The two low blow points
01:08:10Deducted from Diaz
01:08:12That was a big factor
01:08:13And it was a case of
01:08:14What a judge is looking for
01:08:16You had two different
01:08:17Type of judges
01:08:17If one was looking for volume
01:08:18You'd go with Diaz
01:08:20If the judge was looking
01:08:21For clean effective punches
01:08:23You'd go with Manfredi
01:08:24So
01:08:24In that case
01:08:25It really just depends on
01:08:26Who you have sent
01:08:27At the judge's table
01:08:28Well
01:08:28It's a huge win
01:08:29For Manfredi
01:08:30Revives his career
01:08:31To a certain degree
01:08:32And a
01:08:33Momentary roadblock
01:08:34In the progress
01:08:35Toward a title shot
01:08:36For young Julio Diaz
01:08:38So
01:08:38It was a terrific fight
01:08:39Now let's turn our attention
01:08:41To what is
01:08:41Our attention
01:08:42To what is really for us
01:08:43At HBO
01:08:43The main event
01:08:45Of the evening
01:08:45And that's our videotaped
01:08:47Replay look
01:08:48At last Saturday night
01:08:49In Madison Square Garden
01:08:50When Bernard
01:08:50I'm going to talk to you about it
