A shocking murder case came to light from Kanpur on Saturday morning when a young man walked into the Maharajpur police station and confessed to killing his wife.

The accused, identified as 22-year-old Sachin Singh, told the police that he had strangled his wife, Shweta Singh, to death and had come to surrender. Police immediately took him into custody and rushed to the crime scene, where Shweta’s body was found wrapped in a blanket in a rented room at New Hi-Tech City, Rooma.

Sachin, a resident of Mohanpur village in Fatehpur district, worked as a driver of a rented auto-rickshaw. He had married Shweta in August last year against the wishes of both families. The couple later shifted to Kanpur and lived in a rented room under the Maharajpur police station area.

During interrogation, Sachin told police that he had long suspected his wife of having an affair, particularly after noticing repeated money transfers to her bank account. Shweta reportedly claimed the money was sent by her grandmother.

According to the accused, on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, he returned home unexpectedly and allegedly found Shweta sitting on the bed with two young men, believed to be engineering students from a nearby college. A heated argument followed, during which Sachin claimed he was assaulted. A call was also made to Dial 112, and police counselled the couple before asking them to leave.

Sachin alleged that while returning home, Shweta threatened him and spoke about living with another man. Enraged, he strangled her to death at around 3 am on Saturday.

Police said the accused wandered around the city for nearly four hours after the murder and even considered fleeing, but later decided to surrender. Shweta’s body has been sent for post-mortem, and a detailed investigation is underway.

Police also confirmed that Sachin had earlier been jailed in a molestation and rape case before marriage, which he claimed was linked to his relationship with Shweta.
