Tension gripped Kanpur after a final-year BCA student of Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology (PSIT) died following a collision with a JCB during ongoing construction work. Students staged protests on campus, raising slogans of “Justice for Prakhar” and alleging negligence.

The deceased, Prakhar Singh (21), son of fertilizer businessman Prabhakar Singh of Ratanlal Nagar, was a final-year BCA student. According to family members, he left for college as usual on Monday. Around 5 pm, while exiting through the rear gate of the campus in Sachendi, he allegedly collided with a stationary JCB amid heavy dust caused by a speeding car passing in front of him.

Relatives claimed that construction work had been underway on campus without adequate safety arrangements. Due to poor visibility caused by dust, Prakhar reportedly lost control of his bike and rammed into the machine. The impact severely damaged his kidneys, lungs and pancreas.

He was initially taken to a hospital in Kalyanpur and later shifted to Regency Hospital in Sarvodaya Nagar, where doctors declared him dead around 2 am.

Students alleged that the accident occurred due to lack of safety measures during construction inside the campus. However, PSIT Group Director Prof. Manmohan Shukla denied that the incident took place within the campus premises, stating that the accident occurred about 200 metres away from the college.

Police personnel were deployed on campus to control the situation as protests continued. Further investigation is underway.
