00:00This is what everybody's been waiting to hear, right?
00:02Kyle Shanahan on the conference call today was asked about the play of Mac Jones
00:09and if that allows the Niners either from convenience or desire.
00:18Does that allow them to stay with Mac and keep Brock Purdy on the shelf?
00:23Brock's status and bringing him back at all contingent on how Mac Jones is playing.
00:29In other words, if Mac is playing this well, can you afford to wait out Brock
00:34and wait and see when he's healthy?
00:36Yeah, they're not related.
00:38This is Brock's team.
00:39Brock's good to go and everything and can play like Brock.
00:42There's no decision to be made.
00:44It's just nice as we go through this with Brock, the uncertainty of the toe.
00:47It is cool to have someone playing as good as Mac is, but they're not related.
00:51Okay, there's his answer.
00:53There's no relation whatsoever.
00:55When Brock is good to go, this is Brock's team.
00:59Brock Purdy starts at quarterback.
01:01But that comes 24 hours after Kyle was like, yeah, he's probably going to be dealing with
01:04this for the rest of the year.
01:05And I also think that that, by and large, has been his answer every single time.
01:09It's never been, well, you know, if Mac keeps this up, then maybe we wait on Brock a little
01:15bit longer.
01:15It's been, when Brock is ready, Brock plays, it's Brock's team.
01:19And it's kind of, I like his answer.
01:21It's kind of cool what Mac has done.
01:23And it's cool that, you know.
01:24Very cool.
01:25It's cool that Mac's played well and that we've won games and stuff.
01:28That's like, that's kind of awesome, you know.
01:30This was Shanahan last night.
01:32How close was Purdy to playing in this game?
01:34We'll reassess it the same way we did this week.
01:37Wasn't that close to doing it, considered it throughout the week.
01:39But I just want to make sure he gets 100% better and don't put him out there too early.
01:43I thought about it as a possible backup or emergency, but I think the more time we give
01:47him, the better.
01:48Okay.
01:49And I am personally of the belief that the MetLife turf, which claimed yet another 49er
01:54yesterday, actually made this a non-starter for last week.
02:00Based on what Kyle's saying right now, I still feel like Brock is maybe a little bit less
02:07than 50-50 for this game, but I do think that there's a chance in this game for multiple
02:12reasons.
02:13And Rappaport over the weekend said, Brock's going to have a chance next week.
02:16He's got a chance.
02:18And I think that A, it's on grass, and B, this is a monster.
02:24This is a monster.
02:27What an opportunity for the 49ers at 6-3 to potentially go to 4-0 in the division.
02:35What an unbelievable opportunity.
02:38So you want to put your best foot forward for sure in this game?
02:41What is your best foot forward?
02:43No pun intended.
02:44I don't know.
02:45That's for them to make the decision.
02:49Well, the best foot forward is a healthy Brock Purdy.
02:53Healthy enough.
02:53I mean best foot forward based on what you have.
02:56I was like, what do you got?
02:57Well, if he can make all of the snaps and all of the first team reps Wednesday, Thursday,
03:03Friday, he plays.
03:05And if he can't, then you're going to go with Mac Jones.
03:07And that's what this week was.
03:08And we even had the contentious press conference on Friday.
03:12And Matt Maioco asked him the follow-up of, you know, did he take a lot of the first team
03:17snaps at quarterback?
03:18And Kyle said, I wouldn't say it was a lot.
03:20And so it clearly wasn't.
03:22You're welcome.
03:23It might have been 50%.
03:24Whatever it was, it was not enough to where they felt like he could be the guy.
03:28And the last time that he came back from injury and started, he took all the reps Wednesday,
03:33Thursday, Friday.
03:34He took them all.
03:35He started and he got hurt.
03:37So if he doesn't on Wednesday get all of the first team reps, I would guess that we're in
03:42the same spot.
03:43And it's going to be Mac Jones again.
03:44That'll be interesting as the week develops, but how would you all play it?
03:49Because one night you have Kyle Shanahan say, Brock's going to be dealing with this probably
03:54the rest of the year.
03:55The very next day he says, we want to get Brock to 100% before he plays.
03:59Well, Kyle, you sort of just said last night he's not going to be 100%.
04:02So you know me, I don't like to play the percent game because I don't even know what that means.
04:08I want Brock to be able to play at 100% of himself.
04:12That does not mean that he feels 100%.
04:14You get what I'm at my drift?
04:15I don't think George Kittle's 100%, but can he be enough of yourself to where the output
04:24is relatively the same?
04:26When you get to that point, you play.
04:29But that's what we're dealing with.
04:30And then the backdrop is Mac Jones is over here winning games and going 19-24 for 235
04:35with two touchdowns and no picks.
04:37That was a good football game by Mac Jones yesterday.
04:40Ben and Hayward.
04:42Hey, Ben, thank you for calling Willard and Dibbs.
04:43What's up?
04:45Hey, guys.
04:46Thanks a lot for taking the call.
04:48So I think my dad, a podiatrist, is having problems with his toe.
04:55And the doctor there is a 49er fan.
05:01And I asked her, I said, hey, this was the week after Brock got hurt the second time.
05:07And I said, so, you know, what do you think?
05:10You know, how long will it take?
05:12And she said, at least six to eight weeks.
05:16She said, you can't fool with that, that kind of injury.
05:20You know, it takes at least six to eight weeks before it's fully healed.
05:26Because if it's partially healed, it'll just, same thing will happen again.
05:33But, you know, I just thought that was interesting.
05:36You know, of course, not their doctor.
05:39Yeah.
05:40But, you know.
05:41But, Ben, Ben, we've heard the same.
05:42But I wonder how it affects your thought.
05:44Like, this weekend is six weeks.
05:47This weekend is six weeks from the Jacksonville game.
05:51And it is eight weeks from the Seattle game.
05:56I would wait.
05:57I would wait.
05:58You know, because what happens?
06:01If he plays this week and he gets hurt, then you don't have him for the rest of the season.
06:08Really.
06:09I mean, if you think about it.
06:10So, I don't know.
06:12I would do it on caution because, you know, it's just, especially, you know, especially your foot.
06:22I mean, I remember playing football and I tore my hamstring.
06:29And, you know, I used to think, oh, you know, it's just a hamstring.
06:33But, man, if you don't wait until the thing is fully healed, you're just, you're dogging it the rest of the time.
06:42It's just going to affect you.
06:43And the same thing with a groin pole.
06:46You know, it's just, you know, it doesn't sound like much, you know.
06:51But, man, you know, when you have those injuries, it's really hard to come back from them.
06:58And, you know, as quarterbacks, you're not 100% and you're on your foot.
07:03Man, I don't know.
07:04I'd wait.
07:05Yeah, Ben, thanks.
07:06I get it.
07:07I appreciate the thought.
07:09But I always have a hard time with these because you're like, I'd wait.
07:13And I'm like, I don't know how he feels.
07:15Like, it's six to eight weeks.
07:17Well, it's been six weeks.
07:18It's been six weeks.
07:19And if we also, if we accept what Kyle is saying, that Brock is not going, like, he's not going to be pain-free.
07:28Right.
07:29Maybe until next season.
07:30Or maybe never.
07:32Because football players don't really play pain-free.
07:35So, I actually don't need him to be, this is the way I would look at it, I don't need him to be 100%.
07:41I need him to be able to produce at 100%.
07:44So, in other words, just as a fan, I don't mean this to sound insensitive, I don't really care if it hurts when you play.
07:53What I care about is, is the ball going to sail?
07:58That's what I care about.
07:59And so, they have to assess when is the moment that the throws and the scrambles are able to look like Brock Purdy.
08:08If it hurts, it hurts.
08:11But when are you able to have those things look like Brock Purdy?
08:15And when you do, you play Brock Purdy.
08:18That's what I would do.
08:19Yeah, for me, it's what you said first about, you know, the ball sailing.
08:22Because we saw when he came back the first time, he was unable to really plant and push off.
08:27And the ball was high a lot of the time.
08:29He wasn't able to step in and rip the ball, quote-unquote.
08:33And, yeah, the scrambling would be great.
08:34But for me, it's more about the simple things of can you plant and deliver the ball the way the ball needs to be delivered.
08:41Because you look at yesterday, Mac Jones, and he was good.
08:45Mac Jones made the throws that they needed him to make.
08:47There weren't a lot of deep shots.
08:49There weren't a lot of, you know, throws that he really threaded into tight coverage.
08:54He didn't have to.
08:55The offense was in a spot where the run game was so good that he just had to make the simple throw.
09:01He had to execute a lot of basic throws.
09:03And he did, which is all you want your quarterback to do.
09:06But when you face the Rams and you've got a really good defense and a defense that's going to get after you,
09:11you'd love to have Brock and his mobility.
09:13But if he's not able to be mobile, then you're probably going to go with Mac.
09:17I mean, the other thing that's sticking to my head is Kyle saying that, no, Brock was not that close this week.
09:23Right.
09:23Well, if he's not that close this week, then I've got to put him at less than 50-50 this week.
09:29However, I also know that teams are telling us what they would like us to hear as opposed to the opposite.
09:36You are now going up against a division opponent.
09:38Is it possible that the Niners are playing coy a little bit?
09:41Is it possible that what they really are saying is there's no way in hell we're sticking this guy in this situation out on the MetLife turf?
09:48We're not doing that.
09:49However, this week they play on grass.
09:53And the following week at Arizona, correct me if I'm wrong, natural grass or no?
09:57Arizona, Glendale?
09:59Yeah, natural grass.
09:59Natural grass.
10:01Week after that, home to Carolina, natural grass.
10:04Week after that, in Cleveland, natural grass.
10:07Week after that, bye week.
10:09Week after that, home to Tennessee, natural grass.
10:12You don't have a turf game until you go to Indy three days before Christmas.
10:16So I do think with the six- to eight-week timeline, with the way he's feeling,
10:20and with what the Niners were looking at with back-to-back road turf games,
10:25this was not when they were going to return him.
10:28They might, though, this weekend.
10:29They might.
10:30They might.
10:30It depends on what he can do in practice, and that's where I think that becomes the big indicator.
10:36And last week, even though he got some first-team reps, he didn't get all of them.
10:41And if he doesn't get all of them, then they're not going to have him go out there and do it.
10:44And Shanahan even said it on Friday.
10:46He said, you know, we looked at it on Wednesday, and we decided we weren't going to do that.
10:50We weren't going to put all of our eggs in his basket, and so you had Mack get the first-team reps for the most part.
10:56You had some Brock to get Brock ready and to see where Brock was.
11:00But unless you give him all the first-team reps, I do think that you're more likely to go with the guy you've been going with.
11:07And Mack Jones is, I guess, healthy.
11:10He's got the one knee brace and the other knee hurts.
11:12He doesn't look healthy when he runs.
11:13And the bloody nose that he got.
11:15I mean, his face is like gushing blood.
11:17My man is tough.
11:19So tough.
11:19He is a cookie, man.
11:21He's tough, and he's also an unbelievable leader.
11:23The way he made the decision on the last play of the game, he decides that he wants Adrian Martinez to come in and play.
11:31That's cool.
11:31Shanahan had already taken off the headset, and Mack's like, you know what?
11:35We're getting Adrian in here.
11:36You're going to go ahead and be a pro football player.
11:38I say so.
11:39Mack runs off the field, and he signals, and Adrian's like, cool.
11:43I get to, whatever, you get to go in there and kneel, but he's officially now a pro football player.
11:47Pro football player, or maybe Mack was like, I'm not taking your negative one yard rushing.
11:52Exactly.
11:53I'm not doing that.
11:54I got stats.
11:55Yeah, I got stats.
11:56I got fantasy players playing me, man.
11:58I got to think about them now.
12:00Let's go to Jonathan in the city.
12:01Hi, Jonathan.
12:02What's up?
12:03Hey, good afternoon.
12:04The way I hear things coming from Kyle is he's just trying to be politically correct, but I think deep down inside him, Mack Jones starts from now on.
12:13I'm not saying Brock's never going to get his starting job, but he'd be a perfect backup from now because he's not healthy.
12:19And also, more importantly, you don't want to disturb that chemistry, that connection with Mack Jones and his receivers.
12:27You know, he can't go to a store and get a bag of chemistry and put it in the Minecraft for two minutes, and instantly you got chemistry.
12:34You got to build that, you know, throughout the year, throughout the season.
12:38And Brock's been off for a while, man.
12:40I can't believe that even though he's a good quarterback, that he could just walk in, and instantly he's got chemistry with Kendrick Bourne and all the other receivers.
12:49So if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
12:51Let this be, you know, a year of the backups.
12:54Go Niners.
12:55Okay, Jonathan, thanks.
12:56I'm glad you brought this up because I'd like to address it.
12:59I think it's funny that I've heard this now a number of times today, this idea that Mack Jones has chemistry with these receivers and Brock Purdy does not.
13:08What are you all talking about?
13:11If Jawan Jennings is one of the main receivers on this team, and Mack Jones found a way to throw the ball to him, I think Brock Purdy probably has some pretty good chemistry with Jawan Jennings, right?
13:23Now, the Kendrick Bourne point is a fine one.
13:25I think Kendrick, over the last three weeks, has five catches, so let's not make it sound like this is an incredibly key piece.
13:32How about George Kittle?
13:33That's a pretty big target on this team.
13:35How many games has Mack Jones played with George Kittle?
13:38I believe that this was the second one?
13:41The second one, yeah.
13:41This is the second one.
13:42Okay.
13:43And threw a touchdown pass to George Kittle in his first game ever with George Kittle.
13:49I think Brock Purdy has pretty good chemistry with George Kittle.
13:52Jordan Watkins is a rookie, so he has chemistry with nobody, but Mack Jones threw the ball to him a few times.
13:59They both threw to him in camp.
14:01Ricky Pearsall is apparently about to come back.
14:03Who's got more chemistry with Ricky Pearsall?
14:05I do remember Mack Jones throwing some good balls to Ricky Pearsall for, like, a game or two before Brock Purdy went out and Ricky Pearsall went out.
14:15But he has reportedly got a chance this week, and he will be back pretty soon.
14:21Like, essentially, if you're saying that point, and I get what you're, like, you feel like the Niners are in a flow, which is funny because you didn't a week ago.
14:29Exactly.
14:30But you do now, and you feel like the Niners are in a flow, so Mack's got chemistry with these receivers, and Brock doesn't even know who they are.
14:37You're essentially talking about Kendrick Bourne.
14:41That's the sum total of your point.
14:44Kendrick Bourne.
14:46And if you believe that Kendrick Bourne is the entire key to the 49ers offense, I disagree with you.
14:52Brock Purdy's chemistry with all of these 49ers, most of whom he played with last year, all camp, and for the two games this year, is fine.
15:03Brock Purdy's fine.
15:04Brock Purdy knows where third and Juwan is going to be.
15:07And I'm sure that Brock Purdy can get up to speed with that shifty Kendrick Bourne, who usually is about seven yards away from the line of scrimmage anyway.
15:16Right.
15:16I just don't.
15:17And that was the majority of those routes yesterday.
15:18I don't think that's a thing.
15:21No.
15:21That's just me.
15:21I think eight catches by wide receivers yesterday, four for Juwan, two Kendrick, a Sky, and a Jordan Watkins.
15:27The Jordan Watkins one was awesome.
15:29He fought hard for that one, his only catch of the game.
15:32But for me, the chemistry is less important than the actual knowledge of where you're supposed to be, and you're starting to see more of that.
15:41You're seeing fewer times where Mack Jones or Brock Purdy, when he's out there, is having to tell people like Sky Moore and Demarcus Robinson, like,
15:49no, no, no, you're supposed to start there, then you run over here.
15:52The offense yesterday looked a lot more on the same page, and the only timeout they burned in the first half was when Kyle, he was thinking about punting,
16:00and then he called timeout, and then they went for it on fourth and one, and they ended up getting it, even though Kyle Juszczyk might have had about a half a beat early and might have been called for a false start.
16:10But other than that, the offense was mostly on the same page, and I thought the offense looked great yesterday.
16:17They ran it, scored 34 points, and they were able to move the ball almost every single time.
16:23And the defense, I thought, was the unit that allowed the offense to kind of get in that rhythm, because after the first drive, the defense got the offense back out there.
