00:00but let's get started with our top stories of the day we'll start off with a sigh of relief
00:05somewhat for the Denver Nuggets now last night they lose to the Miami Heat 147 to 123 in South
00:12Florida but ESPN reported just 30 minutes ago that a very tough injury to Nikola Jokic appears to be
00:20not as serious as initially feared he potentially could miss a month with a hyper extension in his
00:26left knee so that is the latest on Jokic who will miss all of January and then hopefully for him get
00:32back on the court after that by the way you have to play 65 games to win the MVP in the NBA so this
00:39could potentially take him out of the running for that Shea Gilgis Alexander is the overwhelming
00:44favorite now at minus 425 so Jokic not an ACL or anything like that that was initially feared
00:50hyper extension four-week injury to arguably the best or second best player in the NBA depending
00:57on how you feel about it Jokic by the way averaging almost 30 points a game 60 percent from the field
01:02goals and also basically it's a triple double every single day all right last night in the National
01:07Football League we got a game where we did not expect one how about the Atlanta Falcons jump out
01:11to a 21 to nothing lead they end up salvaging because that's really what it was a win against
01:18the Los Angeles Rams who drove all the way down the field at the end of the game and almost pulled
01:23off one of the massive upsets of the season 27 to 24 probably shouldn't call it an upset because the
01:29Rams were seven point favorites in this game but at halftime you probably had no thought whatsoever
01:33that the Falcons would lewd B. John Robinson rewarded his fantasy owners with his biggest game of the
01:38season and now the Rams will go into the playoffs as the sixth seed so it looks like they'll probably
01:44have to face off with either Chicago or Philadelphia Falcons by the way could factor
01:48in last game of the season although they can't make the playoffs they do control the destiny of
01:53the Tampa Bay Buccaneers all right now back to the game last night Sean McVay didn't like the way that
01:58the game ended but liked the effort in coming back this is but we weren't good enough I do like the
02:03fight of this group the way that we handled ourselves in the second half and we had our chances to be able
02:08to close that game out and here we are again in a in a disappointing situation but this is a humbling
02:14league and we got humbled tonight I wish I had an answer you know I thought they had a good week of
02:18preparation we just didn't have that bounce in our step missing some guys but it's no excuse and so
02:23you know we got to be able to figure it out in a lot of instances it comes back to you know our
02:29collective are we putting our guys in the right sort of spots and then ultimately are we executing
02:33and we'll look at it but it wasn't good enough as a whole and it starts with me great to do it in
02:38front of our fans I thought they provided a great you know home atmosphere tonight you know fun to win on
02:43monday night football um and uh you know it's just great to great to see our team as a whole team
02:49win I thought our defense really made a major difference tonight um special teams came up with
02:54some big plays so really felt like we all kind of leaned on one another and uh um feels good to be
03:01walking out of here with a victory against a good football team meanwhile some disturbing news from a
03:06member on the new england patriots a television station in the new england area reporting that wide
03:12receiver stefan diggs has been charged with felony strangulation for suffocation and a misdemeanor count
03:18of assault and battery related to an incident that occurred earlier this month he's scheduled to be
03:24arraigned on january the 23rd just two days before the afc championship game diggs according to a reporter
03:32in new england denies the charges and the patriots at least for the time being saying they're standing by
03:38diggs and letting this legal situation play out so we're just getting this information about 20 minutes
03:44ago giving you what we know all right now we don't know who's going to start for the baltimore ravens
03:47on sunday night it would appear at quarterback that at the very least if they plan on winning the game
03:52lamar jackson's got to start this one his status against the steelers to be determined baltimore three
03:57and a half point favorites on the road at pittsburgh for the afc north title john harbaugh yesterday not
04:05really giving any true indication as to whether or not lamar will play in the do or die game do you
04:12expect um lamar to be able to play this week or is that still to be determined yeah uh well it's to
04:18be determined you know i mean still he's coming off he's coming off a very uh serious injury and uh
04:22and uh he's working at it uh saw him in here today working at it so i think we'll know a lot more on
04:28wednesday why don't you go lighter with the hitting this week knowing the physicality of the
04:33steelers ravens uh well you must have been watching the uh the shows coach cowher talked about that i
04:40happen to see that because i was watching tv this this weekend unlike other weekends um you know we
04:45don't really i mean at this point in time of the season we haven't been in pads for about three weeks
04:49now uh rules the rules don't really like being pads too much but also we haven't wanted to be we
04:55haven't needed to be uh we we are focused we will focus on technique for sure blocking technique and
05:01all different things that we do but it's not this point in time in the season there's not a lot of
05:05hitting that you do in practice anyway so it's kind of where we're at the chargers plan on resting some
05:12of their starters on sunday the game really doesn't mean all that much so uh justin herbert not going
05:17to play not a surprise for the chargers they head into the playoff trey lance by the way remember
05:21him he will start meanwhile andy reed seemingly making it official yesterday at his media session
05:26reed was questioned as to whether or not he plans on returning for next season he gave an answer that
05:31sure would indicate that he is uh i know you've gone through this every year for the last few years
05:36but you know is there any scenario that you can imagine where you're not back as the coach next year
05:41um i know i'm i'm listen i'm i think i'm coming back right if they'll have me back i'll come back
05:53you never know in this business matt so that's a you know that's a that's a tough one but i i plan on it
06:00yeah chip kelly's career will continue this time he's headed folks to northwestern according to several
06:07reports will be the offensive coordinator there he was fired by the raiders this past season georgia
06:13southern beats app state 29 to 10 in the birmingham bowl so they covered that nine and a half point
06:18spread tennessee three and a half point favorites in the music city bowl that set kick is 5 30 p.m
06:24eastern and then tonight we have the alamo bowl pretty good game by the way usc five and a half point
06:30favorites over tcu all right the oklahoma city thunder didn't play the san antonio spurs yesterday so of
06:36course they won shea gilgis alexander had 39 points okc beats atlanta 140 to 129 amidst a lot of rumors
06:45surrounding potentially trey young of the hawks being traded over the next couple of weeks we will
06:50see uh sga had 39 points as i mentioned okc 28 and 5 on the season atlanta's lost seven straight games
06:56but uh shea after the game wearing shades said that the defense uh certainly could have been better
07:01i think we could have did a better job of tonight of like still guarding them they made a lot of shots
07:07but they also got a lot of easy stuff especially in the first half um that's not the recipe uh to um
07:15to win big so uh we definitely got to get better in that area but nonetheless we uh we did whatever
07:21it took to win tonight and the nba is going to look different every night um teams are really good no
07:25matter who you play and uh getting a w is uh first and foremost whatever you want to call it i don't
07:32know what where you put this game but um with the guys that we had out for this group to compete
07:41on the level that they did you know against the team that is the reigning world champions you know
07:47to be down for four minutes to play um particularly after the third quarter when we talked about
07:55they're really good in the third quarter and they were but you know we were resilient during that
08:01stretch so this is one of those moments regardless of the score that you feel really proud um to coach
08:08team despite 26 points from victor wimbayama the calves go to san antonio and beat the spurs
08:15113 to 101 san antonio was favored in the game the knicks win again they beat the pelicans 130 to 125

08:29always great to catch up with dustin gawker he's got a great sub stack that breaks down everything
08:32happening in the prediction market space the story of the year and sports betting in 2025 as we
08:38head toward 2026 don't see that changing anytime soon dustin happy new year thanks for coming on
08:43the show and we'll start off with the hot story of course which just continues to be calci the company
08:49that burst onto the scene a little bit over a year ago and now are offering prediction markets in
08:55places that sports betting obviously is not legal but people are jumping on board and jumping on their
09:02app at unprecedented rates yeah i mean it's crazy if we had been having this conversation a year ago
09:07almost nobody would have heard of calci there was some betting on the election the 2024 presidential
09:12election and other elections but very few people had heard of this now i'm not sure it's a household
09:16name but a lot of people know what calci is now and the numbers kind of back that up we uh just last
09:22week with uh some busy sports days with uh with all the college football and and pro football island
09:28games uh they were up to 1.6 billion for a trailing seven day period i've actually tracked them as high as
09:341.8 billion over seven days just uh more recently so lots of people betting trading whatever you want
09:41to call it on calci uh just i think it's important to note this is not a one-to-one with sports betting
09:46handle that we talk about a lot on this show i know uh something like i don't know 50 60 of that
09:53could be understood as what we look at as handle in the sports betting industry that's retail activity
09:58every time you're talking about volume that also captures what's on the other side of that the
10:02market makers who are are taking the other sides of your bet so it's not these not the same as
10:07we're this is sports betting handle so you know this is while this is still very big billions of
10:12dollars being traded every week this is still pretty small compared to the state regulated sports betting
10:18industry i'd say this is you know if you take a few of the top states in in state regulated sports
10:23betting that's about how much trading you're having um at at calci right now obviously other market
10:28other operators coming in and and more of this it's going to start looking bigger and bigger uh
10:33especially over the course of 2026 as we as we as we see more prediction markets ramp up
10:38yeah you know i i kind of have like a side question to this dustin and and look maybe i'll be off here
10:45and i'll make my predictions on the the prediction market so to speak is that it felt like when we went
10:51back to sports betting that it felt like espn's failure was not getting in front of sports betting
11:00waiting and waiting and striking a deal eventually while draft kings and fanduel had it going now
11:05i do think that draft kings and fanduel you'll see where i'm going with this dustin i do think that they
11:10are now on board with offering these prediction markets but i'm just not sure that they're gonna have
11:17the same success that a company like calci is because calci essentially is branded as a prediction
11:23market company that's not to say that draft kings and fanduel can't succeed on some level but is this
11:28apples and oranges what i'm trying to compare here because i wonder if six months ago they had started
11:33this versus now everybody probably has a calci account if they want to uh you know put money on
11:39predictions yeah it's going to be a story of 2026 is who wins this space um and i think we'll get a
11:46pretty good answer to that over the course of the next year um yeah i mean draft kings and fanduel
11:51actually moved really fast right again we were if sports event contracts were not a thing a year ago
11:56they have they now have launched their product a year later so that's moving at like at light speed
12:01at least in the gambling industry i'd say can they win yeah who knows um you know draft kings and fanduel
12:07are very good at offering sports betting customer acquisition customer retention um and you know
12:12from the calci side of things this volume is expressed as calci volume because their market's
12:17being traded but we understand that to be more than half coming from robin hood a financial trading
12:21app that lists calci markets so now calci still has a lot it can do on customer acquisition um but a lot
12:27of this valid volume is being expressed as all of its partners at part with as we've talked about
12:31before partner with coinbase they have partnered with prize picks um you get all that that volume number
12:38i'm talking about is all of those things mashed up together so you know it's it's it is a fascinating
12:42question though um and tracking that's why i track these numbers and and all this so closely because
12:47it's it helps us understand like who's winning and where are people trading and betting and where all
12:52this is headed um because yeah anybody tells you so that they know where it's headed they're they're
12:57probably lying to you but it's it'll be a fascinating thing to track uh moving forward
13:01um yeah and and what about this report on the pricing at calci as far as the odds and things of
13:07that nature are they worse than the sports books um so far at least at calci they are um it's it's
13:14interesting to note that um calci they show you odds and they show you a price that you can buy a buy a
13:22sports trade on and that number also will once you actually make the transaction it will include
13:27feed so um some analysts who track the prediction markets and the gambling industry space are really
13:32granularly tracking this as citizens put out this report and they're putting out reports pretty
13:36regularly now saying that once you include fees on calci markets it's actually worse prices than
13:42you're getting at draft kings and fandle which sounds kind of bonkers because you know calci again not the
13:47house this is an exchange but um by the time calci takes his cut by the time the you know the the
13:52market makers who are you know serving as kind of like the sports book put up their odds
13:56you're sometimes getting just worse odds um and this is the promise though of sports spending
14:01exchanges is that you're going to get better prices eventually as more as there's more competition as
14:05there's more people you know doing this poly market has very low fees for instance um but a lot of the
14:11a lot of the early days of prediction markets is high fees and this is actually not better than
14:15sports books again availability and access is what prediction markets and calci offer uh kind of in the
14:20grand scheme of things and maybe not better pricing yet although that's going to come eventually
14:24all right so here's the final question dustin and you can read more about all these topics
14:29over at dustin's substack where he dives into all of the hot topics in the prediction markets
14:34did the chicago blackhawks break the dam with partnerships in prediction markets or is this a
14:40one-off that's the question that everybody has moving forward in 2026 i think we'll see more nhl
14:46teams i think the other teams the other leagues are a big question mark here we've had the nfl really come
14:52out against it um against markets major league baseball and nba haven't said that much about it
14:58but it's hard to believe that they're going to jump in with with both feet on this um you know calci and
15:03polymarket did deals with the nhl that opened up the avenue to have team deals first one chicago
15:09blackhawks uh obviously doing this deal um in a place where you know illinois already has sports betting
15:15it's a curious one um but we're gonna see more we're gonna see more in lower level you know calci and
15:20polymarket have done deals with other things polymarket with ufc calci has done this bunch of
15:25lower level leagues that are much much lower than the nhl and some of the major leagues in north
15:30america but we're gonna see more of this over time whether we see nfl nba mlb do this that that
15:36remains an open question and i'd probably bet against that all right well we'll find out in
