00:00well you can't have the nba finals without two teams one of the teams hasn't been there since
00:041999 can you guess who we're talking about i mean if you're living in a cave then i guess you
00:08won't
00:08know but the new york knicks advanced last night blew out the calves yet again 130 to 93 yesterday
00:15so of course they covered the two and a half point spread that was easy carl anthony towns
00:19jalen brunson they had quiet games but they really weren't needed in this one in fact landry chamet
00:24had 16 points off the bench but mike brown did a great job the knicks are back in the finals
00:30and
00:31the calves are going home here's brown on knowing that the knicks had a chance to get this far and
00:37certainly for kenny atkinson saying that they definitely took a step forward but certainly
00:41getting swept by the knicks wasn't optimal like kind of on that though like when you took the job
00:47obviously part of it was you you have to the deal is you should take the team to a higher
00:53place than
00:53they were last year um do you feel doing this now do you feel validated at all personally
01:01i never never really thought about it like that i mean you know again our business is funny
01:09my previous job supposedly took them to a point that was higher and you know it didn't work out so
01:16you know again i i i i truly felt that this team was an nba finals team i i i
01:24thought i thought we
01:25had a true opportunity because some jobs you take you're like okay we can get better we have a chance
01:30to make the playoffs right now but this one i felt we legitimately had a chance if we could if
01:37we could
01:38help them figure it out the players can stay together during the process especially when we hit
01:42adversity because we hit adversity at different times during the season not just us as a whole
01:47group but even some guys individually including myself and so you know i did have that belief from day
01:54one um i didn't know how it was going to turn out but we're here and you know there's a
02:01lot of people
02:01to thank because of it but it starts with the players i'll turn a positive though the if we took
02:06a
02:06step we took a step um you know this is kind of how this works you have to you have
02:13to keep climbing
02:14we are going in you know obviously a positive direction um you know fell short you know there's
02:22no bigger motivator right to get to the next level you know i think it was all season and development
02:27and how we got to the sacrifice we're going to need to you know make to to get to the
02:31next level but
02:32um i'm proud of this group in terms of how they how they fought through adversity you know won two
02:38game sevens we took a we took a step i think we took a step um mentally from a mental
02:45toughness point
02:46of view um you know um so um i'm going to kind of lean on that um and again we
02:55all know there's another
02:56you know none of two steps really you got to take if you you know that's that's the ultimate goal
03:02and who the knicks will play still to be determined because it looks like oklahoma city
03:06and san antonio are headed toward a long series they'll play game five tonight of course we'll
03:11have a preview of that coming up later in the show all right the two big stories in baseball
03:15yesterday were the chicago cubs starting with them remember that hot streak well here's a cold
03:21streak they've now lost nine games in a row the pirates win as home dogs and the cubs lose yet
03:27again
03:27henry davis had the game winning hit here and certainly craig council knows the cubs are going
03:32to have to play better starting now we got to play better we got to swing the bats better um
03:38we got to
03:39pitch better we need more guys you know contributing to to good stuff um and and you know as coaching
03:46staff we got to figure out a way to get those get the players there um you know we're we're
03:53offensively
03:53we we are equipped to be way more consistent than this and way better than this um and we need
04:01to show
04:01it all right meanwhile the bigger story may be yesterday in sports but naturally when you have
04:07the cubs they take the spotlight where the houston astros throwing a no hitter yesterday but again in
04:12this day and age of no hitters you got to be honest with yourself and understand that nobody really
04:17goes nine innings anymore so let's talk about it satsui imai had his best start ever six innings
04:21pitch shut out of course two strikeouts steven okert came in after that and then el imber santa
04:27made his major league debut and threw two innings in the no hitter but okert was part of the no
04:33hitter first time ever of course in his career he talked after the game about shutting down
04:37the rangers completely it's like being part of a no hitter oh incredible you know obviously
04:44imai went out and did what we'd hoped for there in six innings but no hits that's crazy um
04:51i feel like a combined no hitters are pretty hard like i told julia earlier it's like it's kind of
04:56hard when you're counting on three guys to all have it you know in the same day so uh it
05:00was a lot of
05:00fun it's been a struggle for the orioles meanwhile this season but they do pick up a series win
05:06against the rays nine to seven they win a slight home favorites colton kouser had a walk-off home
05:11run so that was the big blow there in fact his second walk-off in three days he also did
05:17it last
05:17week against the tigers uh jonathan aranda homeward for tampa bay but here is kouser on his walk-off in
05:23the 13 inning yesterday honestly probably one of my favorite wins as a as an oriole um back and forth
05:28just always in the fight really proud of our guys for um just keep showing up keep grinding and
05:34um felt like we were one hit away there for about four innings so um really proud of our guys
05:39bullpen hell of a job um bradish great start felt like it was about four hours ago so um
05:47jacob misurowski continues to pitch like one of the very best in baseball he wins again yesterday
05:53five to one final 12 strikeouts tying his career high and through 57 pitches of at least 100 miles per
06:02hour as they beat the cardinals five to one here is pat murphy the manager of the brewers on the
06:08mrs outing against the cardinals i mean that's really special man really special um
06:17yeah i mean the consistency
06:22you know um pitching too not just not just throwing pitching um
06:30he's worked hard he's earned it you know and he continues to work hard in between starts
06:36um again i always credit the catcher i think william did a magnificent job today with him
06:42meanwhile the mets keep struggling losing again they've lost their fourth in a row this time they
06:48lost to the reds it's becoming a trend nick lodolo six innings pitch seven strikeouts mets are back
06:53in last place here's carlos mendoza on yet another tough stretch what do you think from
06:59bobechet now that you weren't seeing a month ago with runners in the position
07:04well we know he's one of the best hitters with runners since he's been that type of player
07:08uh i think it's just a matter of time um ground ball found a hole today you know uh but
07:14i think
07:15you see a player that is confident um he's putting some a swings on good pitches he's pulling
07:22the ball when he needs so he's using the whole field like the guy that we all know uh the
07:27type
07:28of hitter he is in the national hockey league the stanley cup finals is approaching fast last night
07:34the hurricanes beat the canadians three to two so after montreal won the first one carolina has
07:41stormed back to take a series lead and game four will be on wednesday meanwhile it would appear
07:46that the vegas golden knights are headed toward the final again they took care of the avalanche and
07:53now lead 3-0 but they do play tonight and can close it out 9 20 p.m eastern as
08:00the golden knights are
08:01minus 104 on the money line you see the avs are slight favorites at minus 115 the total is six
08:09and a half
08:09but vegas right now in the driver's seat to potentially get back to the stanley cup finals
08:16and await the winner of the eastern conference dustin gawker is with us catches substack and
08:22podcasts on event contracts which otherwise are known as prediction markets he joins us now
08:28for the very latest dustin great to have you and i hope you enjoyed your memorial day weekend
08:32all right let's start off with uh calci at this point where do they stand have things sort of
08:38changed at all in their landscape because naturally prediction markets uh gearing up here for the
08:43world cup and of course football season after that yeah a lot of the talk has been about sports betting
08:48handle being down or flat right because of the threat of prediction markets and the growth of them
08:53but we've seen calci actually kind of plateau for the first time in recent memory we had looking at
09:00a graphic right now we've had the spike for the super bowl and then this is usually when things die
09:04down yes there's march madness but usually sports betting handle kind of goes down over the course
09:09of spring and summer until we get back to football season but we've seen this line kind of straight
09:13up through well past uh march madness and the final four and into april when there's you know there's
09:19the nhl and nba playoffs but usually there's far less but then starting early may we're seeing about
09:24four billion in volume which don't get me wrong that's a crazy amount of money that's a lot of money
09:29being traded at calci um that was not being traded this time last year so this is with a bit
09:34of a
09:34grain of salt but calci we've seen this little this plateau over the last month where it hasn't
09:38really grown and again not not surprising we're you know we're done with the nba finals uh with the
09:43nba eastern conference finals now with the knicks advancing and we have just a few games left in the
09:48western conference finals and then the final so we're seeing just a lot less we're now uh you know
09:52baseball season baseball is it is an important sport for sports betting and and calci but it's usually
09:58just a lot less in terms of how much people bet on it and just there's just less to bet
10:02on over the
10:03summer so it'll be interesting to see if this number kind of plateaus here or if they start
10:07growing again bucking that trend or if over the summer things kind of go down um like you said we
10:12have the world cup which uh with the united states team high hopes always to get out of group and
10:17with
10:17the games actually being played here we will see uh if if all this kind of bucks the trend or
10:22if we see
10:22kind of a decline over this calci still 85 sports and parlays right now as we sit here so uh
10:29just
10:29something to track over the next uh few weeks and and months as as we get head back into football
10:34season which is of course when when the rubber meets the road for sports books and now prediction
10:39markets absolutely so the most uh promoted aspect of sports books through the years have been the
10:45parlays and even more so the single game parlays and so it shouldn't be a surprise that prediction
10:50markets are going to be promoting these as well but dustin they're not promoting parlays they're
10:54promoting uh something like a parlay that's called something completely different what are they trying
11:01to do here craig you like combinatoric athletic outcome contracts don't you those are your favorite
11:08things to bet on i know it is uh these are just uh this is what polymarket is calling parlays
11:13um we've generally seen the prediction market industry uh kind of stay away from the parlay language
11:18because that's the the language of sports books it's funny uh when you know this existed more so
11:24in europe before it did here at least online in sports betting they're called akkas or accumulators
11:28we've always had of course parlays in nevada at sports books but those were uh i'm sure you're old
11:33enough to remember the sheets with the parlays uh the good sports book right but but now uh now you
11:40just you know we build our own parlays right we go on fandle and draft kings and you you click
11:44a bunch
11:45you put them in a bet slip off it goes this is a huge part of of the prediction markets
11:49industry
11:49um trending toward almost a third of what a volume at calci now is parlays and polymarket us is now
11:56launching its own parlays we saw gemini uh which is uh the winklevoss twins they own a they do the
12:01prediction market as well as the as a crypto exchange they're doing parlays this is a huge thing
12:06moving forward um you know for us it's kind of funny i'd never heard of the word combinatoric until
12:11i saw it in a filing from polymarket um it is a real word it's not something they invented um
12:16but
12:16it's super fun uh to see uh how we avoid sports betting language in prediction markets but at the
12:22end of the day this is this is a parlay we're going to see more parlays at prediction markets
12:26as time goes on and this will be you know the part of the another thing we're going to be
12:30watching is
12:31if polymarket really kind of ramps up and starts challenging calci because right now it's a it's a
12:36a rounding error compared to poly to calci at least here in the united states we're seeing
12:41four billion dollars a week at calci um and more like a um you know less than like some just
12:47in the
12:47high hundred millions right now in terms of polymarket so it's got a lot of catching up to do
12:51again will it do a lot a big marketing push into world cup will do a big put marketing push
12:57into the football season um alongside fandle draft kings fanatics all these other companies
13:03underdog price picks that are doing prediction markets um it'll be something that's going to be
13:07really fascinating to watch all right let's uh wrap it up here with uh something you wrote about over
13:13on your uh sub stack here which is the very popular show survivor that's now been on the air
13:19for a couple of decades you've been able i'm guessing somewhere to bet on these in the past but the
13:25host
13:25of the show seemingly is not a big fan of people trying to get information onto how this show is
13:31going
13:31to go i know they usually film this in remote locations but let's just be honest here dustin
13:37there's a production team involved in this and a lot of production and those people have families
13:42and those people have friends so i don't think that he's a big fan of of being able to really
13:49make predictions of this and seeing those odds change up and down constantly yeah and actually
13:56this came to a head because calcium polymarket offered survivor markets right who would win
14:00survivor uh yes let's point this out survivor happened a long time ago right people know who
14:05won um it might be a smoke smoke cohort of people uh they are under ndas there's lots of things
14:10but
14:11like i've been watching survivor since almost the beginning and this stuff leaks if you want to go
14:15find it it leaks it's it's out in the world it's on reddit somewhere out there so but so basically
14:21calci had odds of the eventual winner obby bracco i don't think i'm spoiling this for anybody at this
14:26point if you haven't watched survivor you're way behind but um you know that she would win was like
14:31she was like a huge favorite before the show the first show ever ever aired and then right before
14:36the finale uh was like a 97 favorite something like that at calci and poly market so um you know
14:42that's the part like the survivors seeing this and it got spoiled for a lot of people who don't
14:46usually get the spoilers right because it's on it's on social media it's a lot of places let me tell
14:50you what what prop said the host of the show they figured out a way to capitalize on the show
14:55it
14:55doesn't sit well with me as a human i get it they build a great business they don't care clearly
14:59if
14:5990 of the people are voting for somebody there's a leak but to look at us the producers as though
15:03we
15:03have a problem is the mirror pointing in the wrong direction he says prediction market platforms are the
15:07ones with the problem not us we made we went and made our show in a vacuum and we keep
15:11it very tightly
15:12contained but if you're foolish and naive enough to not think that somebody might leak it that's your
15:15problem and this gets to like prediction markets exist and they're kind of creating this this
15:20problem for people right there if the leaking would happens but it doesn't really matter in
15:24the grand scheme of things if people are betting on it because people are betting on it and there's
15:27a lot of money 30 million dollars uh traded on the survivor winner now we have a problem now reality
15:32shows are are having problems because of prediction markets yeah fair enough all right dustin as always
15:38great stuff have a great rest of your week thanks again cheers
