00:00you can also get into the latest in prediction markets because cal she right now seemingly could
00:05be leaving the state of massachusetts and obviously they don't want to do so a judge
00:09has approved the commonwealth's motion for an injunction against cal she and if it's upheld
00:14that means cal she's out in the great state of massachusetts justice christopher k barry smith
00:19approved the injunction's request at the same time denying cal she's motion to dismiss it so it could
00:25possibly be those of you who live in boston and in the northeast of course new york not yet but
00:30massachusetts could be the first domino to fall as far as leaving the state also some potential
00:35betting limits are coming to missouri the gaming commission is accepting comments on the potential
00:40eliminations on player props in the ncaa and first half unders charlie baker the ncaa president
00:45requested states eliminate these specific sports betting markets unders first halves etc remains to
00:51be seen if this comes through but it is natural fit for those folks who think that some sports betting
00:56operators does want the money seemingly maybe not the case could come down to something different
01:02okay now this is interesting here because brandon bean is the general manager of the buffalo bills
01:08he ended up firing sean mcdermott getting a promotion but today the owner of the bills terry pigula
01:15and bean ended up having a press conference which went a little off the rails so to speak in
01:20fact bean was asked several questions about why mcdermott was let go pigula said it was his
01:28decision based on the results against the denver broncos also said they did not consult josh allen at
01:33all on the firing of mcdermott and then personnel questions were asked very specifically why they did not
01:39get allen enough help offensively going into the season and bean was asked the question and the owner
01:45stepped in and answered it yeah can i interrupt uh i'll address the keon situation uh
01:56the coaching staff pushed to draft keon i'm not saying brandon wouldn't have drafted him but he wasn't
02:05his next choice that was brandon being a team player and taking advice of his coaching staff
02:13uh who felt strongly about the player and um you know he he's taken for some reason the heat over it
02:25and not saying a word about it but i'm here to tell you the true story
02:33wonder what keon coleman thinks of all this he's got to suit up for the bills next season we think
02:38okay mike mcdaniel former head coach of the dolphins seemingly interviewed in about a dozen
02:42different places for coordinators and head coaching jobs feels like he's landing potentially
02:46with the los angeles chargers working as the offensive coordinator under jim harbaugh also owner
02:51of the new england patriots on a podcast robert craft revealed the upcoming nfl priorities not sure how
02:56the other owners feel about this 18 game schedule two games in the preseason and each team gets an
03:02international game more often than not how about that all right college basketball last night let's get
03:07to it saint john's down big in a game last night against seton hall came all the way back i believe
03:1215 was the number 65 to 60 saint john's supposed to win this one by the way by that many they did not
03:18dylan mitchell 17 points 11 rebounds but phenomenal comeback for rick patino and company who certainly
03:26was very proud to battle back down double digits to win you know i told the guys to get down 15 i said look
03:32if we're gonna win this game you're gonna have to play every single possession as if you're down
03:40three you're down three and three point shots coming where you're down two and the two point
03:46shots coming without a offensive rebound i said but you may get an ncaa tournament and you may not have
03:53it like we we don't have it tonight so you're gonna go home or you're gonna win the game and that was the
04:00challenge i said to them you're down 15 you're gonna go home ncaa tournament say goodbye to
04:05everybody never see each other again or you're gonna move on meanwhile things not as rosy for
04:11indiana's basketball team as they are for the football team how about that change michigan
04:16beats the hoosiers 86 to 72 a 16 and a half point favorite so they come up short of the number
04:21wolverines now 17 and one on the season they are favorites to win the national championship on the
04:26fan blue sportsbook right now at plus 390 here is head coach dusty may on picking up another blowout
04:32win i think probably that we are continuing to see new things defensively and and for the most part
04:39we've been able to figure out solutions to to team issues now they did a nice job of of isolating us
04:45tonight and they got some baskets one-on-one so we'll have to fix that um and then offensively that
04:49we're not these teams are sending everyone back and i think it's a smart game plan i mean obviously
04:55indiana's very well coached they don't they well in indiana wasn't even crashing boards they were
04:59just which takes it's a give and take obviously they're sending everyone back because they they
05:04don't want us in transition and so we've been so lethal and effective in transition so now because
05:08they're taking that away we're having to figure out ways to to be effective and efficient in other
05:13ways other than that was was what we're trying to get at and so credit them i mean i think it's a
05:18smart game plan we're gonna see everything under the sun um but for us to figure out ways and to and to
05:25get these reps getting organized and finding uh what we need to find is is you know i think we've
05:31done it really well at times not where we need to be but um we're not where we need to be yet either
05:36arkansas sends vanderbilt to their second straight loss in a row another blowout 93 to 68 vanderbilt
05:43ranked 15th in the country down from inside the top 10 last week arkansas one and a half point favorites
05:48six razorbacks in double digits arguably one of the best wins of the season for john calipari
05:54i don't know what to tell you why uh do we get arrogant win a game play well and then go and
06:01just act like the other team's going to lay down uh are we looking for the easiest way i don't want
06:07to come in every day ready to play i just wanted to when when you have a chance to being a special team
06:13and individually you have a chance to change your life forever and you just um i didn't feel like it
06:22today i don't get it i don't understand it um you know this team bringing dj off the bench was for one
06:33reason i needed to get him going so i wanted him to be the point guard
06:38i don't know they won the game by 50. not really 50 but you get my point how about this one yesterday
06:47michigan state beats oregon 68 to 52 tom iso visibly upset on the sidelines told one of his players
06:57that he could not guard his mother it was picked up on audio for everyone to hear during the game
07:04here is izzo after the game in uh the huddle you yelled at one of your players that he couldn't
07:09guard your mother my mother's 99 and a half did she have some game
07:15no that's the sad part she doesn't have game and he still couldn't guard her
07:22oh that was i was serious as a jaybird so yeah so he has uh we're all flying back these lansing he's
07:29flying to appleton um check usa today tomorrow him and my mom will be going at it in the nursing home
07:38and uh jim and we'll see how he does 90 years old he's got a shot am at a bio in the heat beat the
07:45kings 130 to 117 that was the final in that game how about this game for luca dontrich last night
07:51against the denver nuggets 38 points 13 rebounds 10 assists what a year for luca 115-107 la beats
07:59denver 16-0 run in that fourth quarter as well the rockets beat the spurs 111-106 barely covering the
08:06four and a half point number when b was five for 21 from the field that's probably why san antonio lost
08:12also phoenix played the 76ers last night final in that one phoenix wins 116-110 but some of the big
08:21stars were out in this one joel mb did not play paul george did not play as well welcome back
08:26joining us now is sam quillen from legal sports report sam each and every day has got to wake up
08:32to the latest on this prediction market business for those of you unfamiliar uh there's a lot of
08:37stories surrounding prediction markets and i would invite all of you to read about them at legal sports
08:42report.com where sam and the team there do a great job updating everybody on what's going on
08:47sam great to have you back here on newswire this midweek edition of the show let's start
08:51off here where it appears as though and again we don't know how these things are going to work
08:55themselves out but massachusetts is a big state boston is a very prominent sports town if cal she is
09:04forced out of massachusetts i wonder if this is a domino of many to fall so to speak i guess we'll see
09:13yeah and i'll add to that craig we'll note it's happening right as the patriots are you know in the
09:18the conference championship as well and then potentially the super bowl so could be losing
09:22out on some money there as well but this week massachusetts court coming out and uh allowing
09:27the state giving it a preliminary injunction which would basically stop kalshi from offering its sports
09:33prediction markets in the state as soon as friday is when it's supposed to be enforced uh it's one of
09:38several lawsuits ongoing over these prediction markets across nevada maryland as well and so far
09:44judges have largely sided with the states now in this case uh massachusetts argued it was actually
09:51the attorney general not the state gaming regulator basically saying that you know these products are
09:56sports betting products they are not federal derivatives products you know the uh congress did not
10:01intend uh when it created the commodities exchange act it did not intend for that law to basically
10:07preempt state laws in all policing powers that we have which as we know the supreme court decided or
10:13kind of uh gave the final decision that states are the ones that regulate and oversee and make it legal
10:19or not legal when it comes to to sports gambling kalshi arguing saying that you know the commodities
10:24exchange act actually allowed um a uh carve out or uh an exemption uh for for our product because it
10:35is a financial exchange while it wasn't stated expressly in the law it's kind of implied that's the real uh
10:41kind of battle here or controversial topic is whether congress intended to do this or not kalshi arguing
10:47it did a court so far saying that you know we're not satisfied with kalshi's interpretation it seems
10:52overly broad now kalshi has until uh noon this friday to either request a hearing with the court which
10:59could result in some further action or what's more likely to happen is they could uh request a stay and
11:06then appeal it to the massachusetts appeal appeals court this is already in the superior court so it's pretty
11:11high and it's moving along but it's pretty significant that again the big state like
11:15massachusetts would rule in favor of the state itself allowing it to stop kalshi from offering
11:20its product really interesting to see what happens from here they actually cited another case in nevada
11:26which was a similar ruling against crypto.com so it seems like so far kind of in this slow process of
11:32state courts where we've seen this played out and you know we've talked about it could take for years
11:36so far it seems like the courts are mostly siding with the states you know whether or not if it
11:41eventually gets the supreme court they take that into account you never know these days what the
11:45supreme court is going to do with the way it's been stacked and repacked and changed around and
11:50certainly won't know what it'll look like in a couple years from now but so far states starting to
11:54win in this case the next step will be it actually being enforced which again we'll come back to friday
11:59see what kalshi does yeah big big week it looks like for them meanwhile charlie baker of the ncaa
12:05has planted his flag he wants to see the end of prediction markets and of course is a little bit
12:11nervous with all of the different stories that we've heard surrounding sports betting allegations
12:17of some folks being corrupt out there and maybe some point shaving it does make some sense here i just
12:22wonder which of the sports betting operators are going to stand with the ncaa because if they do
12:28lower some of these max bets especially on the unders which does seemingly come into play which
12:32by the way i agree with uh but you know sports betting operators stand to lose money then so i
12:37wonder how this goes yeah in light of these these recent scandals that we've talked about over the
12:43past couple weeks with i think like 30 plus players in college basketball being involved in you know
12:48this fbi indictment with point shaving and whatnot uh like you mentioned craig the sports books are now
12:54facing pressure to tweak their bets change and restrictions and add different things to kind
12:58of combat this you know it's it's a good thing certainly this this activity was flagged and that's
13:04it was flagged because it happened on these legal sports books what charlie baker is coming out saying
13:08now is you know prediction markets don't have any of those safeguards that would have caught this
13:12activity they don't have any of the the better monitoring verification so you don't know if an athlete is
13:18potentially betting on a sport or not and we just don't know how much of this activity is
13:22actually going on on prediction markets what he's asking the cftc to do again that's the
13:28agency that's supposed to regulate these prediction markets is create a robust set of safeguards similar
13:34to what states require of sports books that involves all of that stuff a lot of these prediction markets
13:40say they already do third-party monitoring but none of it is actually required there's no ruling body the
13:46cftc has largely just let the status quo be sort of a laissez-faire environment where
13:52these prediction markets do things and then people react you know you'll recall maybe a month ago
13:56we talked about kalshi moving to list a market on transfer portals or transfer portal decisions by
14:03athletes which was really alarming the ncaa came out against that said it's really you know just idiotic and
14:08stupid they would try to do that kalshi and these other companies have really tried to push the
14:12envelopes and what they're able to offer uh it hasn't been listed yet but it's just another kind of
14:17thing that the ncaa has come out and said hey we need rules to safeguard and prevent this stuff
14:22we just want the cftc to do something rather than let the status quo be because again they said the
14:26status quo cannot that cannot be what just continues going forward um but this could be you know i don't
14:33think this would actually happen where these uh prediction markets are banned explicitly from offering
14:38these college props at least not anytime soon but it would be a really big blow to their business
14:43notably hold crunch came out this week and said that the uh college college football handle is
14:48actually about only 1.2 times as much as the nfl right the nfl is 1.2 times as much as college football
14:55and then for sportsbooks it's about four times so it's a lot more of kalshi's business is coming from
15:01college sports which could be due to any number of things due to lower age requirement due to these less
15:07robust amount of safeguards but it would be a big bigger blow to their business than sportsbooks
15:11losing it so i thought that was an interesting wrinkle as well but again just because the
15:15insta double a is mad about something doesn't mean it'll actually happen as you know very well
15:20yeah i mean a lot a lot of talk and sometimes action sometimes not speaking of which big action
15:25here prize picks uh getting purchased and it's a fascinating time by the way to buy into some of
15:30these operators as well i know you can certainly read more about this over at legalsportsreport.com
15:36all cash purchase that raises some eyebrows naturally it means that there's a company that's all in
15:40yeah that company's allen which is a international lottery and gaming operator started in the czech
15:49republic they own several businesses across the world and they actually operate the lottery in
15:54illinois but they bought two-thirds of prize picks this week for uh about a 1.5 billion dollars in cash
16:01like you mentioned and you know even beyond that headline is there's a potential to pay an extra billion
16:06in earnouts over the next three years so just a major purchase at a time when like we talked about
16:12craig this whole kind of uh the gambling industry itself and the future of different products is
16:17really kind of in question prize picks recently which was mentioned in the release launched its own
16:22prediction markets product it's now in 40 states with prediction markets including big states like
16:27california and texas and even florida where hard rock is supposed to be the only sports book in town so
16:33that was mentioned in the release as well as kind of another step of prize picks broadening its
16:37business obviously the company's very well known for offering a product that looks very similar to
16:43parlays in a lot of states and reaching states that don't have sports betting with that product a couple
16:48years ago it faced a lot of regulation from states cracking down on that product and that caused
16:53prize picks to change that over to again instead of against the house peer-to-peer so um really big bet
16:59by a company here again almost a 2.5 billion dollar deal over the next three years prediction markets
17:06are getting squeezed kind of at the regulatory level but in the meantime the money keeps coming in
17:11and obviously a big operator like alan paying you know almost three billion dollars is definitely
17:15nothing to you know nothing to sniff at yeah definitely not all right well sam great stuff as
17:20always i invite people to follow sam on social media and also check out the website
17:25legalsportsreport.com thanks again sam have a great week yep thanks you too greg
