00:00let's get started with this battle between cal she and tennessee the prediction market company
00:05and the state that has legalized sports betting the tennessee sports wagering council last week
00:09you may remember issued a cease and desist the cal she holly market crypto.com as well asking
00:15the companies to immediately cease offering sports event contracts and issue full refunds
00:20because again they don't follow some of the same rules that some of the regulated sports betting
00:24operators have well cal she is now fired back with a lawsuit against the tennessee sports
00:28wagering council in the united states following a similar route that they have in other states as
00:33well and so we'll see if the cease and desist ends up happening or if cal she is going to have to exit
00:38the state of tennessee but naturally they're following a lot a lot of states here in the
00:43country don't believe that some of these prediction markets should stay active they believe that they
00:47do it's just a battle between a company that's making money and a state that wants to see some
00:52money come in through taxes and regulations so there we go all right last night honestly not
00:57much of a game between the texans and pittsburgh steelers houston's defense best in the nfl on
01:02display last night they scored twice in the game last night you don't see that in a playoff game very
01:05often once on a fumble recovery once on an interception their offense really didn't do much
01:11but it was enough to get the job done so they cover his three-point favorites this one barely
01:14stayed under the total 32-6 as houston now moves on to the next round of the playoffs ironically they
01:21play at new england initially it looked like that game may be sunday night but the nfl smartly said
01:26houston's in we're gonna move this game to sunday afternoon so uh 4 30 eastern i believe if i'm not
01:32mistaken or three o'clock late afternoon start and then the night game uh the bears will host in that
01:37one so that'll be the second game of the two between the bears and rams all right so we now know the full
01:42schedule in the nfl so that's pretty cool we also know that the pittsburgh steelers season is over
01:46here's mike tomlin on the season ending and also aaron rogers on his future didn't give much of an
01:51indication oh man certainly a disappointing end to our season um but you certainly got to give
01:58uh houston a lot of credit uh in particularly their defensive unit i thought they ruled the day
02:04um they certainly had a reputation for that coming in um and they confirmed it with their performance
02:10um and that's just how it goes um we didn't we didn't capitalize off of turnovers in the first
02:18half we're plus two and still down by by a point at the half and that's just not a good sign
02:24and does that game affect your decision for what to do next year
02:28in any way no i mean i'm not going to make any emotional decisions
02:32disappointed you know obviously such a fun year you know a lot of adversity but a lot of
02:40a lot of fun been a great year you know overall my life in the last uh the last year and this is
02:45you know a really good part of that coming here and being a part of this team so it's disappointing
02:50to be sitting here uh with the season over meanwhile the houston texans are moving on what
02:55a great effort as i said on defense domico ryan certainly proud of that effort as they move on
03:01to the next round it's what a what a game what a performance by our guys uh and just guys just
03:07continue to let their light shine through how they're playing so proud of our team proud of the
03:11effort and how we finished the game it wasn't pretty from the start and we had some poor moments in the
03:18game but i'm just proud of our guys for continuing to remain resilient no matter what happened in that
03:23game no one's faith wavered throughout that game uh guys played under control guys played the right
03:29way and finished it the right way to give us the victory uh yeah um you know we had some problems
03:36with the snaps uh me catching them you know got to find a way just to catch them and then take care
03:41of the ball um you know we knew on tape that they did a good job of you know punching at the ball or
03:47trying to you know um get you to while you're throwing get your get your throwing arm so you know
03:52i try to work on that throughout the week but they made plays and i think there's these games
03:56and play those games from my experience like they're gonna make plays we're gonna make plays
03:59it's all about you know moving forward and you know trying your best to you know flush it and
04:02keep going so you know um i thought you know when every time we had to bounce back you know we made
04:07more plays so i mean i'm proud of our guys for having a little bit of resilience in those moments and
04:11you know to finish a game like that was really dope so as the texans move on i guess the one
04:17question that we'll have with their uh week this upcoming is will nico collins play because
04:23he's their best player on offense and he was carted off with a concussion last night so his status
04:29to be determined it is a short week and of course they'll need collins and as much as they can to get
04:34past new england on the road this week the falcons will interview john harbaugh other teams set for
04:41interviews the giants the titans we'll see who ends up getting his services so to speak and of
04:47course there's still a lot of jobs still out there also bills have lost gabe davis in their reunion
04:52with him to a torn acl so he's going to be out into next year also jordan poyer out at the denver
04:59broncos as well all right so let's get to the pga tour which is of course getting ready to get started
05:06you're going to see a familiar face back on tour once again that is brooks kepka he is officially
05:12leaving live golf we saw the story percolating last week it definitely is official and kepka will
05:19make his debut back on the tour january the 29th he does have some restrictions and also some money
05:27involved i'll get to more of that coming up a little bit later in the show but essentially kepka
05:32will have to donate five million dollars to a charity and also not be eligible for some of the
05:38finances at the end of the season if he ends up winning some events i'll tell you more about that
05:41later in the show all right in the nba last night how about this the sacramento kings beat the la
05:46lakers yesterday you don't see that that often 124 to 112 lakers nine and a half point favorites wow
05:53malik monk former laker if i'm not mistaken made seven three-pointers he had 26 points
05:59these press conferences at the end of the game from jj reddick keep getting funnier and funnier
06:03here's another one after the loss last night no it's literally we can't make a shot i mean you look
06:09at it we first of all they're they're right there with us as being one of the worst shooting teams in
06:13the league um that's the highest or tied for the highest with houston for the highest anybody's shot
06:19all season so you know that's typical you know we're 28th before tonight and opponent three-point
06:23percentage will be 29th or 30th after tonight um had 50 potential assists tonight we converted on 21 of
06:30those um expected score we won by 24 like this is the this has been the theme you know it has been
06:37the theme so i told them before the game that like you're gonna face adversity in life like adversity
06:44doesn't miss you but you know for them their willingness to continue to compete in and overcome
06:53that that's that's what it it says a lot about who you are in those moments so um great effort um
07:00just love to compete level yeah you're gonna win some you whatever but you play like that with your
07:08heart like that you can look at yourself in the mirror maybe the clippers have found the fountain
07:14of youth because kawaii leonard and james harden are certainly having a great december and january
07:20kawaii last night 35 points harden 32 points la beats the hornets 117 to 109 by the way harden
07:27passed shaquille o'neal for ninth place on the all-time scoring list and also the cleveland cavaliers
07:32lose a very disappointing game utah jazz do not beat many but they did beat the calves last night
07:38final score in that one 123 to 112 that was the final there as cleveland by the way one of the
07:45bigger upsets of the entire nba season they were 13 and a half point favorites going into this game
07:52last night welcome back to newswire here on sports grid always great to check in with dustin gawker
07:56on the very latest on prediction markets you can read his sub stack subscribe to it and get the very
08:01latest as we told you earlier in the show it looks like a battle of words between the state of
08:07tennessee and and calci and man i mean dustin the beat just rolls on with these i mean to see
08:13holly market at the golden globes was not something that i would have predicted no pun intended but here
08:20we are golden globes doing massive ratings every year and it's sort of the you know predecessor of
08:26course to the oscars which are coming up in a couple of months uh what did you make of this you
08:30know certainly uh you know they you know these prediction markets i mean it probably we should
08:34note that they have been involved in the in this sort of space before making these sort of
08:39predictions on the awards the sports is really the thing that has has caught people by surprise here
08:45a little bit but i've talked enough i'll let you take it from here yeah i mean you can trade on all
08:49sorts of things we talk about sports a lot on your on the show but you can trade on the uh the outcome
08:54of the golden globes the the oscars that are coming up as well uh you know uh well will there be odds
09:00on the oscars too that's a fair question but you know polymarket calci and prediction markets are
09:04obviously just getting into the mainstream consciousness and this is another example of
09:08we saw deals with media partners and now polymarket friday announces a deal with the golden globes they
09:13have this integration on the show where before the awards are announced they're showing the odds on
09:18polymarket in real time uh and people can trade on it uh that's interesting and you know certainly you
09:23know gets in front of an audience that people who might not be interested in polymarket but
09:27at the same time there is some real blowback on them for doing this and people were like
09:32why are there gambling odds on my award show when uh a lot of people were taken aback by it and you
09:38know in the same way i think a lot of people have gotten a little tired sometimes of sports betting odds
09:43appearing on sports events um you know there's a little bit of of people getting tired of that and
09:48then we see it on uh you know infringing upon something where gambling has not really been a part of
09:54the show and gets on there people on twitter lose their minds i you know i've seen new york times
09:58and other folks who cover this stuff kind of taken aback by gambling odds on the award show so um you
10:06know certainly it got a lot of press puts to puts the test uh is all pr good pr or can bad pr hurt you
10:12we'll see because polymarket kind of got blasted for this and again will we see it on the oscars will
10:17we see it on other things outside of sports as time goes on that will be you know we're going to see
10:22more and more of pushing uh you know the odds and the trading odds into other other news outlets
10:28and media organizations meanwhile the american gaming association we know that some of the bigger
10:34companies have taken a step back fanduel draft kings etc now that they're offering these prediction
10:39markets and the american gaming association very quick to note that they want to make people
10:45understand that they do not believe in the idea that the uh prediction markets are the same as the
10:52sports betting operators and so these event contracts they've made clear hey uh you know
10:57either they get regulated we're not going to support them what do you make of the american gaming
11:01association here and and quite frankly dustin i know you have a contact with them before
11:06you know with them sort of i mean i don't know how to put it but with some of these companies the
11:11bigger ones the sports betting operators fanduel and draft kings leaving it sort of feels like it
11:16means more to them to be able to make money than it is to be with the aga which i know that can't sit
11:20very well with them yeah it's it's weird and yeah a lot of the battle on the legal front and the
11:26legislative front has been at the state level so far and like just in like the past few days we've seen
11:31all this activity in congress so actually which i think is super interesting we see yes the american
11:35gaming association and the tribal gaming group get together send a letter to a bunch of congress
11:40people saying hey uh you're doing this crypto market structure deal which does relate to prediction
11:45markets and the commodity futures trading commission which oversees all this stuff so
11:49they're going to be lobbying to have a ban on sports event contracts in via prediction markets
11:55via this bill i think that has somewhat of a chance it's certainly not 100 it's certainly not zero
12:00maybe not a coin flip but there's a chance that happens that's super interesting uh we saw 12
12:05democratic senators get together send a letter to the cftc uh you know just yesterday uh not no
12:11republicans in there so that's meaningful but there's a lot of noise around this and then this
12:15morning uh the trade group that represents uh calci and some of the other companies that are in
12:20prediction markets not polymarket notably they they announced that they hired two former members of
12:25congress to help them lobby at the federal level about all this stuff and this again this all
12:29happened in like two days this is like this is a lot of a lot of smoke in a couple of days
12:34around all of this so you know we're going to see a like a battle here in the very short term about
12:39whether this is going to survive in uh in at the federal level and through congress again pricing
12:44that like will that actually happen i don't know but there's there's going to be a real effort to add
12:49this into this bill that's being considered as you and i know congress doesn't pass a whole lot of bills
12:53they're going to almost have to pass this bill it's whether something could possibly get added with
12:58enough democratic support with enough lobbying from the aga and the tribal groups and and whether that
13:02pushback from the prediction markets trade group will be enough to stop it yeah speaking speaking
13:08of which maybe i should check in with your old friends at lsr or maybe you have some answers to
13:12this for for me because i i would be curious of this so i saw on social media that you posted that calci
13:19brought in approximately 466 million dollars on sunday and they broke their own record of 455 million
13:27on saturday is it important dustin for for me you for us in this industry to know
13:32by geo tagging where this money exactly is coming from because i certainly would be very curious to
13:39read the numbers from california and texas and places where sports betting is not legal i don't
13:45know if we have access to that data just yet but i feel like that's an important note from this
13:49unfortunately not like that's under the companies like if they wanted to release that i guess maybe
13:54they could but we just get the volume we know like what people are trading on certain days and what
13:59markets they're trading on we just get that very raw data uh on a daily basis like we know uh on a
14:05like i i we have already the past weekend and again almost a billion dollars of of volume again
14:11under important understand that volume does not necessarily translate to retail in the sports betting
14:15industry if that if we were going to make that into handle it would certainly be far less than that in
14:19terms of comparable activity but yeah it'd be interesting a lot of people think this is just
14:24california texas georgia places that don't have legal sports betting and not really as much
14:28in states that do have sports betting and that kind of bears out on the numbers where we're continuing
14:33over the fall months q4 here to see record handle record revenue for legal state regulated sports
14:39books uh we've not seen the degradation of what's going on does that mean it's all in unregulated states
14:45not necessarily but we're definitely see like we definitely believe and you know analysts believe a lot of
14:50people conventional wisdom says this is happening in states where there isn't legal sports betting
14:54more than any other place again we don't have a whole lot of uh of data to say that it would be
14:58fascinating like you said to see that but right now we presume a lot of california a lot of texas
15:02and a little bit in the states that do have legal sports betting now yeah i would love for them to
15:07at least some of those numbers it would tell me a lot more about how those states feel hey dustin
15:12great stuff as always we'll check you out over on sub stack please subscribe to dustin's sub stack
15:16about prediction markets and a whole lot more dustin's temporary we think
15:18it
