00:00Money changes the calculus.
00:04So, Jawan Jennings was really mad at the beginning of the year, right?
00:08I wonder, because all those incentives that got reported,
00:14and we were kind of like, ooh, and Jawan's with the rib injury,
00:17and he's mad, and now Brock's hurt,
00:20and so the Niners aren't throwing the ball downfield as much,
00:23and this, that, and the other,
00:24and it's not going well on those incentives.
00:28Would you like an update?
00:29I would, yeah.
00:30All right, here's where we sit on Jawan Jennings' incentives.
00:36For 50% of the offensive snaps, he will make $1.5 million,
00:43and so far he's played 67% of the snaps.
00:46All right.
00:47I like his chances there.
00:49He will make another $666,000 if he gets 60 catches.
00:55He currently has 44.
00:56All right, three games to go.
00:59Needs 16 catches.
01:00That one is in the balance.
01:02It's tough.
01:03Yeah.
01:04I would say that that's a little less than 50.
01:07That's less than likely.
01:08It depends on Ricky Pearsall.
01:10If Ricky's out, I mean, Jawan may have to eat more.
01:14Another $666,000.
01:16If he gets to 600 receiving yards, he's currently at 495.
01:22I like his chances there,
01:23although you do have to factor in the likelihood of him getting ejected,
01:28which cost him $1,000 last year.
01:31It did.
01:32It did.
01:32But he only needs about 34, 35 yards a game with the remaining three
01:38in order to hit that one.
01:40How about this?
01:42If he plays 15 games, $2.4 million, he's played 12.
01:49Don't get hurt, Jawan.
01:51Right.
01:51Three to go.
01:52Got to play them all.
01:53And plus playoffs, though.
01:54I think that that also factors in.
01:57I don't know.
01:58I don't know.
01:59Okay.
01:59Maybe.
01:59Maybe.
02:00Maybe.
02:00If the 49ers make the playoffs look solid and Jennings plays at least 35
02:10offensive snaps in a playoff game, $600,000.
02:15All right, Jawan.
02:17Okay.
02:18So there's a lot that really looks like they're going to be achieved.
02:24A bunch more that have a strong chance of being achieved.
02:28I think if Jawan pretty much stays healthy through the rest of the year
02:32and the Niners don't uncork a three-game losing streak right now,
02:36Jawan's going to get a bunch of this money.
02:39And does that soften whatever the hell y'all were arguing about in July
02:45and August?
02:46Because for me, Dibs, and I think you agree with me, boy,
02:50my opinion has changed big time.
02:52Partially because of Ayuk.
02:54Partially because Jordan Watkins hasn't turned into much of a thing.
02:59Ricky Pearsall's injuries, et cetera, et cetera.
03:01I want Jawan Jennings back next year.
03:06I don't think that was necessarily the Niners' plan at the start of the year.
03:10I hope it's their plan now.
03:11It should be their plan because you look at what else is going on.
03:14Brandon Ayuk had his guarantees voided, and now he's doing the Chris Brown.
03:20He's putting his deuces up, so he's out.
03:23And you mentioned, what, Jordan Watkins?
03:26He's played 17 snaps, which is the same number as Malik Turner.
03:31I don't even know if you've ever heard of him.
03:33He's also played 17 snaps.
03:35Sky Moore, 94 snaps.
03:38And you know what, Sky?
03:39You stay.
03:40You return kicks.
03:41I love you in that role.
03:43And I was going through my notes.
03:44I did a deep dive on some of the Niner stuff, and I went through all of my handwritten play-by-play notes.
03:50And like five or six times, Grandy, I have written down either should have had a fair catch or ran away from a kick or caught it at the four.
03:59And now the last, like, seven or eight weeks, he has been amazing.
04:03So, Sky, you come back.
04:06Demarcus Robinson, quietly getting better as a wide receiver, whatever, three or four.
04:12Yep.
04:12And he's signed, so he stays.
04:15Marquez Valdez-Scantling, I believe he's a stealer.
04:19I think he's a stealer.
04:19He's a stealer.
04:20I think he caught a touchdown the other night.
04:22Russell Gage, 28 snaps.
04:24Kendrick Bourne, he's going to leave.
04:26Ricky Pearsall, you can't stay healthy.
04:28So, when I run through that whole list, you've got Demarcus Robinson, wide receiver three, a Ricky Pearsall question mark, and then Juwan.
04:37So, I'm with you.
04:38Like, let's get this done in the offseason.
04:40Give him a real contract.
04:42I don't know where the relationship is.
04:44I don't know.
04:45I don't know where it is.
04:46I don't think it's, like, awful.
04:47It's not Ayukian.
04:50But I don't know where that sits.
04:53I would bet that the relationship is better than we think.
04:56Maybe.
04:56And I also don't know.
04:59You know what?
04:59I really am fast.
05:00I don't know what kind of offers he's going to get.
05:03I don't know what the league thinks.
05:05I don't know if Juwan Jennings has a little Draymond Green in him.
05:09Where people are like, oh, that works really well with the 49ers.
05:13You do third down.
05:14You're big.
05:16You block.
05:17You're not a downfield threat very much.
05:19The Niners don't throw downfield very much.
05:21That's a great fit.
05:23No, we don't want you with the Bengals or whatever.
05:27You know what I mean?
05:27But I think there are a lot of places where he would fit.
05:31I think he's going to get some interest.
05:33And the wide receiver market is so bananas that, you know, even if you look at someone
05:38and you're like, oh, you're just kind of okay.
05:40That can be $15 million a year or more.
05:43Right.
05:44So I don't know.
05:44I don't think the Niners are going to want to go way deep into the pockets.
05:50Although, in theory, they're going to have some money to spend that they didn't think
05:53they would in the wide receiver room because Brandon go bye-bye.
05:56Right.
05:57And if you look at what they have outside of Juwan Jennings and Brandon Ayuk, you've got
06:02Ricky Pearsall, who is an unbelievable route runner.
06:05He's a great receiver.
06:07He's got that top end speed and the ability to break it off and, you know, do the whole route
06:12tree.
06:12He's not much of a blocker per se.
06:15And then you've got Juwan Jennings, who absolutely looks to go out there and hurt people as a
06:20blocker.
06:21And when you're in the Shanahan system and Greg Cosell, and I hate to steal your bit, but
06:25they run a lot of 21 personnel, which means two wide receivers.
06:29If you have two receivers, two running backs and one tight end, one of those receivers at
06:34least has to be a blocker.
06:36And that's Juwan Jennings.
06:37It's not Jordan Watkins.
06:38It's not Demarcus Robinson.
06:40Although I think he's a pretty good blocker.
06:42It's not Sky Moore.
06:44So if you have a guy in Jennings who's a little bit like Debo when it comes to blocking in
06:49the run game, he's not only willing and able, but he's, he's damn into it.
06:54No, he look, he's a dog, man.
06:56I mean, Juwan, you need a dog in this office.
06:58Juwan Jennings on multiple fronts.
07:00We've watched this for a couple of years now, quite frankly, as all of the injuries and the
07:04situation that developed last year with Ayuk and Debo and whatnot, we got to know Juwan a
07:09lot more.
07:10You know, he had that epic game in LA last year where they ended up losing and it was
07:15a career altering performance for Juwan Jennings.
07:18And he was ticked after the game because the team lost.
07:21And I, that was the first moment for me where I'm like, I like the way this dude's wired.
07:25Now, um, whatever happened in the off season, was there actually a calf injury?
07:30Look, business gets wonky.
07:33Um, that was one of those ones where I couldn't really put a finger on or even really have
07:39a need to, to place blame.
07:41Um, it happens.
07:42It is what it is.
07:43They figured it out.
07:44I knew that Juwan was going to come and show up and play when it was time to do that.
07:48And he did.
07:49And, uh, he's played well and he's played through broken ribs and, and, and like, he's
07:53just wired the way that you want someone on your favorite team to be wired.
08:00And therefore, and he also has chemistry with the quarterback.
08:03So to me, that's really, really important in this discussion.
08:07By the way, you're listening to 95.7, the game KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco, Odyssey
08:11Sports Station, home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries.
08:14Always live on the free Odyssey app.
08:16Coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
08:17The Niner wide receiver room has become, I think, the most intriguing room for the offseason
08:24to see how they're going to handle this.
08:25Draft free agency, keep their own, all that stuff.
08:28Yes.
08:28And I think what you just said, uh, really resonates with me.
08:32You talked about Juwan Jennings playing through broken ribs and he did that, I think, in no
08:38small part because of these incentives.
08:40And so he looks at his contract and he realizes that if he gets to games played, snaps played,
08:46touchdowns caught, et cetera, all the rest of it, yardage, if he does all those things,
08:51and I think you mentioned they were like 660,000 a pop.
08:55A bunch of them.
08:56That right there is about two and a half or three million in money that you have to go
09:01out there and earn.
09:01So two things with that.
09:03One, he played through broken ribs, I think, in part because he wanted to get to those incentives.
09:08And the other piece of it is, if you do sign him to another contract, if he wants to stay
09:13and you want to keep him, I would bet he's going to want a, quote, real contract.
09:19Of course.
09:19One that's not tied to all this, uh, this bullschmitt about, oh, you got to play through
09:24this and play through that.
09:25Like, that's pretty rare in the NFL when you have a guy who you rework his deal and so much
09:32of his money is tied to, well, you got to play.
09:34Well, and how many years, though?
09:36Remember, now he'll turn 29 next July.
09:39That's not old.
09:40It's also not young in the NFL.
09:42Right.
09:43You know, he's already been re-signed once.
09:45So this is somebody who had a rookie deal and then another deal.
09:49And now we arrive at this.
09:51It's not a long-term contract.
09:53It's not a four or a five-year deal by any stretch.
09:56No, but if it's two and 25, two years, 25 million with 15 guaranteed.
10:02Without knowing the Niners cap inner workings at all, that, that feels, I would do that.
10:08I would do that.
10:10Like, that feels very comfortable to me.
10:12I don't know.
10:13Would he?
10:13And is there going to be a better offer out there?
10:15Yeah.
10:15And it's interesting what you said about other teams and other offers because Juwan Jennings
10:20is a little bit like Draymond where Draymond could go out there and be whatever on whatever
10:25team and he could still be a phenomenal player.
10:27He might even be a hall of famer, but what he does for Steph and this team in this system
10:33guarding one through five, he wouldn't necessarily be that if he was on a team like Houston,
10:37for example, you wouldn't have him guard the other team center.
10:40He would be a good old fashioned power forward because they have so many other guys who actually
10:45play center.
10:46And Juwan here as a guy who in the two receiver sets, you need him out there.
10:51He leads the team in snaps because if he's out there and you're going to run the ball
10:56and you've got Kittle and you've got Trent and you've got him maybe all on one side and
11:00then you send Juszczyk over there as well.
11:02Now you've got four dogs leading the way.
11:05I just think in sports, man, when you find something that works, keep doing it.
11:11You know, not too long.
11:12You got to find the right time to be like, oh, this is expired.
11:16But there's so much in sports, like we're hearing it constantly right now with the Warriors.
11:22You know, we've got so many fans spending so much time on the trade machine and all these
11:27things about like, we'll play, play Jonathan and play Will Richard, you stupid idiot.
11:32Like that'll work.
11:33And it's like, maybe, maybe it'll work.
11:36But I think we got to give a nod to the fact that pretty much everything the Warriors have
11:42tried so far has not worked, at least not consistently.
11:46And there are a lot of like, I remember when Hargrave got signed, Baldy is on these airwaves
11:52saying, this is my favorite signing of by any team in the entire off season in the NFL.
11:58And it was an absolute disaster and a complete and total bust of a signing and millions of
12:06dollars, high, high millions of dollars out the door for the Niners.
12:09We don't know, you don't know what's going to work until it works.
12:14Once you find something that works, man, hang on to that.
12:19So that's kind of how I feel about Juwan.
12:22Like it works.
12:23It works with the Niners and you don't need him to be a star.
12:26You just need him to be him.
12:28You need him to get his five to eight hundred fifty yards a year, convert third downs, be
12:35a dog, be the guy that's going to get under the skin of the opponent, whether it's the
12:41Cleveland Browns or the Carolina Panthers who are kicking him in the you know what's
12:44and all the stuff that's going on.
12:46Like Juwan mixes it up and converts first downs.
12:50That has worked for the 49ers.
12:53So, yeah, I just think when you find those things, you got to keep riding them.
12:58You ride them as long as you can.
12:59And especially when you look at what you have behind them and we didn't even mention Jacob
13:05Cowling, who was a drafted wide receiver who just doesn't play football.
13:09And, you know, Watkins, who you just drafted, you don't put him out there on offense.
13:13You don't really put him out there at all.
13:16And so when you start to think about what else you have in the building, yeah, you can
13:19go ahead and use first round capital on the next Ricky Pearsall and hope that that works
13:24for you.
13:24But you have other needs.
13:25So you've got one in the building, you know, he works and Demarcus Robinson, I was just
13:30looking at PFF.
13:31He's actually the number one ranked run blocker among wide receivers.
13:35So when you think about, you know, Robinson and Jennings, two guys who can do a good job
13:41in the run blocking and also in this offense, you know, your number one receiver is McCaffrey.
13:47Your number two receiver is Kittle.
13:48And then your number three receiver is one of those receivers.
13:51And, you know, you don't really, really, it's Pearsall in a best case scenario.
13:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:56I wonder how much to what degree they want it that way.
13:59And boy, like, I'm no psychic, but man, if I were advising Parag Morante and the Niners
14:09and I'm not, I would be like, I would be very prepared for Christian McCaffrey to never
14:17do this again.
14:18Like, this is not, that doesn't make it.
14:21He does it every other year.
14:24Right.
14:25Right.
14:26He had this year, two years ago.
14:28Yep.
14:28Last year he got hurt and he's doing it again this year.
14:31So if you follow the trend of super high usage running backs, not named Derrick Henry, usually
14:38coming off a year like you have, like he's having, you usually have a step back year.
14:43It's not just coming off of this year, because you know what else happens after this year?
14:47Dum, dum, dum.
14:49Free agency?
14:50The 30th birthday.
14:51Ah, yeah.
14:52Oh, there's that.
14:53The dreaded running back 30th birthday.
14:57Now, you mentioned Derrick Henry.
14:58They're not all Derrick Henry.
14:59No.
14:59And he's half the size of Derrick Henry.
15:02Derrick Henry's already 30, right?
15:03Completely.
15:04He might be 40.
15:05He's an anomaly.
15:06Yeah.
15:06But that's what I'm getting at.
15:09I think the San Francisco 49ers as an organization, I'm not going to come down their road for all
15:15these touches, but I would be planning in the back of my head, no more of this.
15:21I don't think that this will work after this year.
15:24And so they need to be prepared for that.
15:27So there's a whole lot of shopping going on.
15:31And I know running backs, that's not a free agent thing so much.
15:35And with the last name Shanahan, it's all like, yeah, just just find somebody, some undrafted
15:40free agent.
15:41Well, whatever.
15:42I don't care where you find them.
15:43Hopefully it's not the third round.
15:45That doesn't work.
15:46Right, right.
15:46You know, I don't care where you find them, but you better really start thinking about
15:51young, fresh, running back legs starting next year.
15:55Well, you got Garendo, and he'll just be in his third year.
15:59I mean, he's still under contract.
16:01You're so funny.
16:02And didn't they draft that Oregon bust?
16:04Wait, whoa, whoa, whoa.
16:06Jordan James is his name.
16:08We haven't seen him on the field yet, Dibs.
16:10Right, that makes him a bust.
16:11No, because you got McCaffrey.
16:12That whole thing was a lead in because I saw you champing at the bit to jump on in.
16:18So I primed.
16:19Perceptive, Dibs.
16:20Way to go.
16:20I primed the pump, peripheral vision.
16:22I primed the pump by using the B word.
16:25Yeah.
16:26Bust.
16:26So far, so bad for another, quack, quack, Oregon running back.
16:33I think I drafted another one in April if they want.
16:35Yeah.
16:35Didn't they?
16:36Well, I don't think they drafted.
16:37Did they draft LaMichael James?
16:39They did.
16:39They did.
16:40They did.
16:40They did not draft.
16:41Did he go to Oregon?
16:42He did.
16:43Was he a bust?
16:44He was.
16:45He scored a big touchdown in the NFC Championship, went over the Falcons, and then he fumbled
16:49in the Super Bowl.
16:51Lucas Alexander.
16:53My favorite.
16:54Probably my seventh.
16:56My seventh favorite part about the show is the Lucas, the mockingbird from the fourth
17:01row.
17:04Bucky Irving went to Oregon, didn't he?
17:06He did.
17:07Yeah, he's good.
17:08I also went to Minnesota.
17:09He didn't play for the Niners, though?
17:11No.
17:12He didn't play very well for my fantasy team last week, either.
17:14I'm out.
17:15I'm out.
17:16It's a shame.
17:17Bucky.
17:18I thought that was the B word you were going to go to.
17:20No, and they also drafted, wasn't Eric Armstead an Oregon guy?
17:24So was DeForest Buckner.
17:25Yeah, a couple wins there.
17:27Those are defensive players.
17:28I know.
17:29Who else went to Oregon?
17:29Diamantor Lenore.
17:31And you know what?
17:33Quietly, the jury's still out on Diamantor Lenore.
17:37He is not.
17:38Oh, really?
17:40You go back and watch the film from Tennessee.
17:42Oh, okay, Cosell.
17:43What'd you find?
17:44All right, Rob.
17:45There were a couple plays where he, well, first of all, they didn't set the edge at
17:49all in the run game.
17:50A couple plays.
17:51Everybody's got a couple plays.
17:54He's not having the same year he had last year.
17:56Well, that actually kind of makes sense.
17:58He's running around with a bunch of babies in the secondary with him, and there's no pass
18:03rush.
18:03Of course he's having a worse year.
18:06All right.
18:06Of course he is.
18:07They can't touch the quarterback.
18:10And he is the only experienced defensive back member.
18:17Like, I'm actually, I'm amazed that he's played as well as he has.
18:22That's a terrible setup for a corner.
18:25PFF has him at 48th among corners.
18:28Yeah.
18:28You'd be wrong.
18:29The highest ranked niner on the cornerback list.
18:32So, I'm with you.
18:34The pass rush has been non-existent.
18:36You should just have, if they had Miles Garrett, they could play the rare 1-10 formation.
18:43Instead of a 4-3 or a 3-4, you just play a 1-10, and he has more sacks than you do.
18:49You know, he needs a sack and a half to break the record in three games.
18:53Sack and a half.
18:54Yeah.
