01:33main event headlining for the first time undefeated 2000 u.s. olympic silver
01:37medalist rocky juarez will take on former usba super bantamweight champion
01:41jason schoolboy pyres also tonight the eyes of boxing are on another olympian
01:47francisco panchito bajado who returns to the scene of his only loss yet the
01:52teenage prodigy still growing comparisons with latino legend he'll face
01:56frankie santos and you'll see another major prospect unbeaten juan diaz a.k.a.
02:02the baby bull he'll square off with former tough man competitor john macho midget
02:07bailey as we make our way indoors to the beautiful state-of-the-art mohegan sun
02:13arena the future home of the newest wnba franchise the connecticut sun owned and
02:18operated by the mohegan sun the finale of three consecutive weekends of showtime
02:23championship boxing it all began in melbourne australia then onto atlantic
02:26city and here we are in the constitution state where three talented fighters two
02:31of them olympians are back in the spotlight it's fight night in connecticut
02:40hello again everybody steve albert along with my partner former world champion bobby
02:43chezz and we welcome you to a big night of boxing and bobby let's get to it how
02:48would you assess in a in a general sense how far these kids have come along let's
02:52begin with perhaps the most polished of the three rocky juarez all right steve well
02:57rocky juarez has matured at an amazingly passed fast pace he is a smooth boxer shows no excuse me
03:04shows no reason to be in a hurry defensively very astute can punch with both hands but his lack of
03:09aggression his lack of excitement sometimes look like bad stuff at the box office for him
03:14at 22 bobby rocky's the old man of the group believe it or not what about the youngest yet
03:19the most active of the trio talking about juan diaz juarez is just 19 years of age has had to
03:25mature more mentally and physically as as it appears with his other young comrades eight
03:29fights ago we saw him crying after a fight he actually won his emotions run on the edge and he got the
03:34better of him he's still undefeated he's staying busy but he's trying to make the little subtle
03:38nuances come true in the transition to his new style as a pro unlike the amateur and you know what
03:44right now he's having some problems diaz just 19 eight months younger than the intriguing francisco
03:50panchito bajado there he is panchito bajado burst onto the scene like gangbusters 9-0 at nine straight
03:57knockouts and then a lack of focus and the lack of i guess we could say conditioning he led to the
04:02loss for juan rubio he's come back with two more fights but not at junior welterweight at welterweight
04:08146 144 pounds there's a big question is his focus there is his dedication
04:13back to where it belongs this is a very important night for bajado while all three prospects
04:18theoretically share top billing this evening it's bajado who generates the most buzz with
04:23his exciting style and charisma right now let's dig a little deeper into the fighter's skills beginning
04:28with the very promising juan diaz courtesy of bobby chez still a teenager juan diaz has shown exceptional
04:36skills and maturity he can box and he can punch with an especially effective body attack
04:41most recently he's shown me some mental maturity by slowing down the pace and sitting on his punches
04:50he still has some mental and physical maturing to do but at 19 years of age he has plenty of time
04:56with double digit fights at this early age he could eventually emerge as a superstar
05:01and tonight 19 year old juan diaz reaches the 20 fight plateau considerable experience for a
05:10fighter so young as we close in on our first bout the baby bull juan diaz looks to remain undefeated
05:16against grizzled former all-state wrestler john bailey well he picked up the nickname macho midget for
05:24fighting bigger opponents in tough man competitions john bailey 21 9 and 2 13 knockouts he's fought
05:30ricky hatton former champ joey gamash billy erwin just to name a few he doesn't care who he gets in
05:36there with one of his best wins over then number two contender joel perez his toughest opponent the hit
05:42man bailey was dropped four times by hatton in a fifth round tko loss in 2001 bobby a guy who makes
05:49for entertaining fights says hey i could have tapes on diaz but the heck with it i'll adjust
05:54he's one of those old-fashioned blood and guts fighters you know what steve some people subscribe
05:58to that school of thought and that's just not me i'd like to see what i'm going in prepare for what i
06:03have to deal with and this is a different type of guy but i'll tell you what from my point of view he
06:07needs to find a way automatically to neutralize the offense of his opponent diaz otherwise he's going
06:12to be for a horrible night he says the olympic guys don't impress him they're spoon-fed we'll see if diaz
06:18changes his mind juan diaz ferocious body puncher out of houston youngest boxer ever to fight on
06:24showtime two years ago at 17 we watched him grow up and develop as a pro
06:48too young to box professionally in the states he fought his first three in mexico a sparkling amateur
07:00record of 105 and five three months shy of being eligible to compete for his native mexico at the
07:062000 olympics so he turned pro at 16 bobby as you know a soft-spoken affable young man who who's really
07:13matured since a difficult fight with ubalo hernandez a couple of years ago while bajado has the power
07:18and flash could diaz be the sleeper of the uh the group well you know diaz like bajado is not even
07:2320 years old just 19 years old he's still a teenager he's demonstrated some excellent skills
07:28and some pretty good maturity so he stays focused and works hard he could emerge as one of the better
07:32fighters of the group he's shown us that he can box and punch and has good endurance all the things
07:38lead to be that he could be a sleeper and a monster well out of the ring a model citizen graduated number
07:43four in his high school class now a sophomore at the university of houston as we check the numbers
07:49we go to the tail of the tape the most glaring disparity in age diaz 11 years younger than bailey
07:56height and reach are nearly identical at yesterday's weigh-in diaz 133 and three quarters bailey 135 and a
08:03half and the key mohegan rules for this particular bout there's no standing eight count the three
08:09knockdown rule is in effect a fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the last round if an
08:14accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the third round the fight is ruled a no decision
08:18if it happens after the end of round three they will go to the scorecards
08:22so here at mohegan sun getting set for juan diaz versus john bailey lightweight scheduled for 10
08:29we get the formal introductions from our ring announcer jimmy lennon jr ladies and gentlemen

09:34trim and fighting out of calcutta ohio he weighed in at 135 and one half pounds with a record of 21 wins
09:44nine losses and two draws he has 13 wins coming by way of knockout ladies and gentlemen please welcome
09:52john macho midget bailey
10:00and his opponent across the ring on my right fighting out of the red corner in this 10th round attraction
10:06wearing blue trunks fighting out of houston texas by way of guerrero mexico he weighed in at already 133
10:15and three quarter pounds he is undefeated in his campaign to the ring with 19 wins no losses nine wins
10:23coming by way of knockout here is the wbc number 14 lightweight in the world introducing the undefeated
10:39once again frank cappuccino is our referee in charge now to get instructions 10 rounds of action scheduled
10:46good evening gentlemen you were both given your instructions in a dressing room both these touch
10:51gloves i leave it with you
10:58diaz usually gets right to it he expects bailey to come right at him juan diaz not really about power
11:06but about wearing really about power but about wearing people down bailey on the other hand he's mr
11:14tough guy by nature of fighter but it would behoove him to box and move try to keep the aggressive diaz
11:20off balance third man of the ring is frank cappuccino here we go these are lightweights
11:28scheduled for 10 diaz in the blue bailey in the red trimmed with white diaz has really gotten it
11:34together since the tough bull baldo hernandez by a couple of years ago right more patient now but he
11:40still comes out with tenacity throwing bombs to the body very busy puncher you would think that
11:46bailey with that tough man mentality just went out there make a statement get to bailey get too early
11:50shouldn't get to diaz early maybe hurt him you hear the crowd reaction diaz a naturally aggressive
11:58left hooker always coming forward he does have fast hands he looks in tremendous shape i think this is the
12:03best shape i've seen him in looks more cut than in the past more defined he just breaks people down
12:11look at those body punches with diaz first turn throw he just came out throwing a lot of punches
12:15sometimes didn't sit on the punches weren't real powerful weren't real accurate just a lot of them
12:20almost like the amateur style scoring repeatedly with his favorite punch the left hook doesn't have
12:27natural power but slows opponents with an accumulative effect the amateurs it's more about numbers volume
12:34of punches it's a good left upstairs by diaz and the pros it's about hard punches according to diaz
12:43when the pros they do score power punches score more than just jabs and the amateurs jabs punches all
12:48score the same only 19 ds fighting for the 20th time
12:55he's been the full 10 round distance twice has fought a couple of pretty rugged opponents he's been
13:00knocked down and cut and battled back to adversity we have really seen him grow up in a hurry bailey's game
13:11gutsy and tough he has an aggressive style always gives the effort
13:19looks to outwork you that's one thing i always say about that word tough tough is your ability to
13:23take a whooping good is your ability to give it right now billy showing he's tough but not so good
13:27just yet used to work full-time on the night shift in surveillance at the mountaineer racetrack and
13:32gaming resort in chester west virginia we've been there to tell our eyes
13:35and he's coming up with a big left hook time and time again
13:42barely walking into shots there's a heavy right hand over the top by diaz
13:50target practice for diaz the speed and accuracy right now being big factors
14:00a very impressive opening round for juan diaz
14:03usually guys steve that are that tough in the chin are not as tough to the body i'd like to
14:10see diaz take a couple of right hands down the middle the hooks didn't seem to land well but
14:14right hand big right uppercut on the inside of the chin by diaz
14:21as we head for the bell in round one a very good one for dia
14:26one of the books let's check the keys to victory with bobby chair
14:33starting juan diaz set the fight pace he likes to work at a fast pace this will be to his advantage
14:38number two be patient he tends to be too anxious he needs to relax a little bit more
14:43and lastly stay aggressive he's always more effective coming forward this is important for him
14:50john bailey push diaz backward this will be his best chance to upset diaz's rhythm
14:55number two take the fight inside you may be able to rough diaz up and rattle him a bit
15:00lastly outworked diaz he has showed some patience but sometimes a bit too much
15:09let's take a left hook in the last round you see the jab comes out here by
15:12bailey and he has bends here and hits the hook right on the jaw beautiful slips underneath
15:19there it is and right over the top of the lowered left hand
15:23that's diaz at his best diaz with good people in his corner he's well schooled
15:30former junior welterweight contender ronnie shields plus derwin richards and willie savannah a very
15:36close-knit unit
15:40and of course the ubiquitous cut man joe souza helping out as well
15:44the baby bowl in blue juan diaz off a very very impressive first round against the durable john bailey and red
15:52just for the record bobby how does one improve upon your power
16:05well when you sit on punches what happens is you're not up on your toes you're not up on your toes you
16:08can't grab the ground your legs your foundation you grab the ground and you drive off the ground
16:13in action and you actually turn your weight in
16:16bailey not afraid to trade with diaz as you can see
16:20we talked about the fact they wanted to make this award it was his best chance
16:23but right now i just don't see it he doesn't throw as many punches he's not as accurate
16:27he doesn't appear to hit as hard as diaz
16:39but right now he's in with a very formidable
16:47right leg is wobbling bailey
16:51bailey who has been in there with people like joey gabash and
16:54ricky hatton and billy erwin
16:56knocked down four times by hatton
17:02as mentioned when he was in the ring for the first time
17:05he doesn't care who he gets in there with and right now he's in with a very formidable
17:10opponent juan diaz
17:17he is coming forward with a beautiful left right combination the right scored more heavily
17:26so he has still taking his time to work him running the jab very methodically not being too over anxious
17:34bailey digging in with some body shots of his own there
17:44bailey missing with the right
17:51long right hand over the top by diaz and it pushed bailey back
17:54stop
17:57he is just a tough guy
18:01hammering left hooks upstairs by diaz
18:04and it doesn't seem to phase bailey who's getting very red-faced almost as red as his trunks
18:09there was one uh right left hook right hand in the far corner earlier in the round that really had
18:14you see the leg just for a minute here quiver
18:15a lot of resolve he's getting tagged bailey on the inside those right hands are getting in
18:26oh big left hook to the neck by diaz and bailey just gives him a love tap
18:32so that a baby
18:45That's what I want you to do now, let's do that jab, and look here, I'm going to work.
18:52He's doing that jab, and he's going to run straight, let him cross.
18:55Stay, let him cross.
18:57Diaz will hit his back to us.
18:58He slips, there's some punches coming here from Bailey.
19:01He slips, lands a beautiful, crisp right hand, then Bailey throws the punch here,
19:04and he comes right over the top with a beautiful right hand.
19:07Excellent slipping and counter-punching.
19:10Here comes the hook over the top.
19:12There he slips the jab and lands the right hand clear on the jaw.
19:15And ear of Bailey.
19:19Later in the round, they mix it up, trading shots on the inside.
19:21Maybe a little physical, a little dirty.
19:24With some respect, both ways.
19:25They snuck a little elbow in there.
19:28Bailey's nine losses, only two have come by knockout.
19:31This guy can really take a lot of punishment, and Diaz is dishing it out.
19:38Round three, scheduled for 10, 135 pounders.
19:42Diaz with a left hook to the head.
19:45Let him go, let him go, John.
19:49And a pretty right uppercut on the inside.
19:52Most of that is scoring by Diaz.
19:56Look at his jab.
19:57I was just going to say, Steve, his best and most effective weapon is that jab.
20:00His scoring points, it's a heavy jab.
20:02It's not just a point jab, and it's setting up the right hand, the left hook, in the uppercuts.
20:06A lot of action in this right uppercut to the chin by Diaz, and a left smacking left.
20:16Another hard left hand to the head by Diaz.
20:18That left hook continues to score.
20:22All right, I'm all right, I'm all right.
20:24Don't tell me.
20:25I tell you.
20:25In the right eye of John Bailey, Cappuccino says, don't tell me, I'll tell you.
20:30Because Bailey just said, hey, I know I'm cut.
20:33We look at Diaz.
20:34He doesn't have a ton of knockouts.
20:36He's not a big knockout puncher.
20:37He has crisp combinations, though.
20:39He's punching a little better than he has in the past.
20:40But they've chosen a guy with a good chin, probably on purpose, to see if they can extend Diaz some rounds,
20:46and get him some real good side work, and some reasonable opposition.
20:50Another left hook to the head by Diaz, worsening that gash around the right eye,
20:57trying to see exactly where it is, if it's getting into the eye, the blood.
21:02This could be a matter of time now, as Frank Cappuccino takes a long look at that right eye.
21:08And then a body shot by Diaz.
21:10These are polarizing shots.
21:12These are great body shots and head shots by Diaz.
21:14And now, granted, he's not a big puncher, but some of these shots are really getting home well.
21:19Resounding left hook to the head by Diaz, being cheered on by this crowd.
21:24There's a lot of blood on the face of John Bailey right now.
21:29Frank Cappuccino taking a long stare at that eye of John Bailey,
21:34but he knows this guy is full of grit and determination,
21:36so he's giving him the benefit of the doubt.
21:43There has been very little let up in the punching of Diaz.
21:47What a work rate.
21:48Get off him, get off him.
21:49And again, Bailey walks into a shot.
21:54Beautiful jab by Diaz.
21:56Yeah, he just doesn't have the overall skills to neutralize what Diaz is doing well.
22:00The speed is not quite there, and he just doesn't have all the real skills and knowledge
22:04of how to get out of the way of some of those punches and neutralize others.
22:07Bailey, a human punching bag.
22:09Oh, a half-pump, half-upper cut.
22:12Step back, step back, step back, John.
22:13Right on the nose by Diaz.
22:14When I say step back, step back.
22:22Bailey surviving a cut here in the third round,
22:25that apparently is not clouding his...
22:28Now, now!
22:30And again, he gives a nod of approval of respect to Diaz.
22:34I've got to relax.
22:38Come on, actually, guys.
22:39You won't knock the clock.
22:42Okay.
22:45That's it.
22:45You're all right.
22:45You're all right.
22:46Come on.
22:47You're fine, man.
22:48Johnny, you're leaning your freaking head right into this kid.
22:50Okay.
22:51Come on!
22:52You're not doing anything we said, Johnny.
22:54You're not doing anything.
22:55You're leaning your head in with this kid.
22:57You're backing out with your head up in there.
22:58The jab is too slow.
23:00Okay.
23:00Now, get busy with this kid.
23:01His mouth is wide open.
23:02His mouth is wide open, Johnny.
23:04Keep pushing him back.
23:05Tell me some numbers.
23:06The six.
23:07The one more.
23:07The six, baby.
23:10Diaz working that left hook to the head and to the body.
23:13Sometimes he comes over the top
23:14and then rips uppercuts him down the middle.
23:16Both sides, left and right, mixing it up well,
23:19covering well defensively and coming back
23:22when John Bailey drops his hands.
23:25Speaks too much of a fact to me, Steve.
23:27Pardon me, Bobby Cutman Mike McQuattra
23:30earning his money between rounds.
23:32Dr. Michael Schwartz, the chief ringside physician,
23:34was also looking in.
23:39Ah, come on.
23:40Come on.
23:41We've got a report from Jim Gray, from the doctor.
23:44Jim.
23:44All right, Steve.
23:45Dr. Michael Schwartz, as you just said,
23:47did examine Bailey in between rounds.
23:49The cut is above the right eye.
23:51He's very concerned.
23:52Right now he will let it continue,
23:54but he's keeping a close eye on that eye,
23:56and it's very borderline how long he will be allowed to
23:59and permitted to continue fighting.
24:01Steve.
24:02Jim, not only that,
24:03but it just looks like a moot point.
24:04I mean, academic, he's getting punished here.
24:06I mean, what's the point of continuing?
24:08Although Bailey, of course, will argue that point.
24:12Tough guys will always argue that point, Steve.
24:14Absolutely.
24:14I mean, we've been around long enough to know that.
24:16Referee Frank Cappuccino informs us
24:18it was caused by a punch to cut.
24:21Because I agree, I never saw the heads really clash.
24:25And there's a shiner underneath the right eye
24:28to boot of Bailey,
24:30the result of an arsenal of right hands and left hooks
24:34by Diaz.
24:35Bailey keeps fighting back.
24:37I'll give him that.
24:38He really does.
24:38He keeps coming in,
24:39and sometimes it's almost,
24:42I wish he wouldn't, you know?
24:43He just comes in,
24:44he walks in the punch after punch,
24:45but he's still being somewhat effective
24:47from time to time on the inside,
24:48namely himself.
24:49He's so brave that it could be detrimental
24:51to his health in the long run.
24:54Whoa, a wicked left hook to the head
24:56by Diaz,
24:57and he did it again just for good measure.
24:58Diaz continues to have his way.
25:19Bailey is sitting down.
25:21A hard body shot by Diaz.
25:25Very effective left hand.
25:27But Diaz also doesn't have to worry
25:28about anything incoming, really,
25:29because Bailey's just a little bit of a clubber,
25:31not really a big puncher,
25:33and he's not very quick.
25:34And a short right uppercut on the inside
25:36from close range by Diaz.
25:40Yes!
25:49A very rare lull in the action,
25:51but back comes Diaz hammering away to the head.
25:54The right hand landing solidly.
25:56Now he goes back to the body,
26:00and Bailey complains of a low blow.
26:02You've got to keep him up, okay?
26:04I'm warning you.
26:06One more, and he may take the point away from Diaz,
26:09but this one is so far gone by now,
26:11it probably doesn't mean anything.
26:15Yes!
26:16Yes!
26:16Yes!
26:17Yes!
26:18Again, Bailey walking into a jab of Diaz,
26:20and those are hard jabs.
26:25Not probing range-finding jabs.
26:27Those are meant to be a weapon.
26:29No!
26:30All right, I'm going to get some taggers here.
26:39Listen, get the little jab what you're doing, okay?
26:42What I want you to get the little jab,
26:43but do not, do not get in touch.
26:46I'm not going to tell you again, son.
26:48Yes, sir.
26:48Listen, forget about the body, okay?
26:51Forget about the body.
26:51Uppercut.
26:53Uppercut.
26:53You know when you're close,
26:54walk with the hook.
26:55It's there.
26:56His right hand is down, okay?
26:58Walk with the hook.
26:59Every time.
26:59No problem.
27:00Definitely like you did, Joe.
27:01We'll see Diaz adding to his already extensive arsenal.
27:05Uppercuts.
27:06Both sides.
27:07Right uppercuts.
27:07Left uppercuts.
27:09Landing on Bailey's face,
27:10and just really catching the will.
27:13We'll take a look at what was supposed to be a low blow.
27:16And that looks like a hit right in the everlast patch.
27:19That looked like a borderline punch right on the belt.
27:22But Bailey did complain.
27:23And it got the attention of Frank Cappuccino,
27:27who warned Diaz.
27:29Well, they've kept that eye under control,
27:32but controlling the fight is 19-year-old Juan Diaz in the blue.
27:37We're seeing his entire repertoire here.
27:39He is just unleashing it all here against Felix.
27:44Diaz is very important.
27:45He's working in behind the jab.
27:46That's what his corner told me to do.
27:47That's what he's doing.
27:48Right.
27:49Staying with the game.
27:50Ferocious right hand to the head by Diaz,
27:54as you were talking.
27:56Here's a beautiful right uppercut on the inside.
28:01Look at Press Row.
28:02No surprises here.
28:04Ron Borges from the Boston Globe.
28:05Sherman, the Kane Manchester Journal Enquirer.
28:08George Kimmel from the Boston Herald.
28:09This one's pretty easy to score, Steve.
28:12No question.
28:13Round five.
28:15Scheduled for ten.
28:16Lightweights.
28:18And it has been wall-to-wall Diaz.
28:25Later, Panchito Bajardo, then Rocky Juarez in the main event.
28:28Two of these three Olympians.
28:31Diaz is the only non-Olympian because he was too young.
28:33He turned pro at the tender age of 16.
28:37And he fought his first three fights in Mexico.
28:40He was too young to fight in the United States.
28:42Former Worldweight World Champion,
28:44I believe he turned pro when he was 14.
28:48How about Wilfred Benitez,
28:50who turned pro at 15 in 1973?
28:53Champion by 17.
28:54He won the WBA 140-pound title at 17.
28:58Roberto Duran turned pro at 15 in 1967.
29:01No amateur fights.
29:02Won the lightweight belt at 21.
29:05Some amazing natural athletes.
29:11Keep an eye on the man in the blue trunks,
29:15Juan Diaz.
29:17It may be just a matter of time
29:19before he gets his title shot.
29:20Of course, he's up against
29:22just a gutsy journeyman opponent here tonight.
29:27We can't go crazy,
29:29but he just looks so good.
29:33And we're not just measuring that by tonight,
29:35but by his past as well.
29:37We have seen.
29:38He's also in the Division II.
29:39There's a lot of talent.
29:41And he's going to have to step up
29:43within the next year with 19 fights.
29:45Somewhere to the brink of the top 10,
29:47top 12, top 8.
29:48Something like that.
29:48Get his feet wet around that competition seat.
29:52How he handles it.
29:54Well, he's certainly handling the situation tonight.
29:57Come on, John.
29:58Keep that punches up, too, John.
29:59In tremendous fashion.
30:02Series of left hands.
30:04About three or four straight
30:05unanswered lefts by Diaz.
30:07Just keeping it in Bailey's face, pestering him.
30:12And still to come,
30:36our second of three bouts for Monkensville.
30:40Francisco Pancino Bajardo back in action,
30:42ready to get in there with Frankie Santos.
30:44We'll take you backstage into Bajardo's dressing room.
30:48The 19-year-old.
30:50Prior to the surprising loss to Juan Rubio
30:53less than a year ago here at Mohegan Sun,
30:55had everything going his way.
30:57Spectacular knockouts.
30:58The matinee idol looks well-spoken.
31:00Lots of press.
31:01The way he entered a ring with the hood.
31:03He's got the kid brother Angel shadow boxing.
31:06Certainly looking relaxed here right now.
31:11Very special,
31:12but it all may have been a little too much too soon
31:14for Pancino.
31:14Young man now trying to piece it all back together
31:17and have a fresh start again.
31:18And it's round six scheduled for ten.
31:37John Bailey just hangs in there
31:39despite being punished.
31:41This is the way Bailey operates.
31:49Surviving a nasty cut over the right eye earlier.
31:53Again, Barney cuts that would be really bad.
31:55We knew that Bailey was going to be here for a while.
31:57Some pretty good fighters,
31:58some pretty good punches
31:59have tried to get rid of this guy quickly,
32:00and he just doesn't happen.
32:02Tough guy competition winner.
32:03What does it tell you?
32:04He's tough.
32:06And he's a, yeah, as you say,
32:08a former tough man competitor.
32:10Macho midget is nickname
32:12because he used to take on bigger guys all the time.
32:18And then he turned to regular boxing,
32:20and he's 21, 9 and 2 with 13 knockouts.
32:24Stop!
32:25Believe it or not,
32:25my brother, a little bit bigger than him,
32:27though, when a tough man.
32:28I wonder if John ever fought him
32:32because he did go after bigger guys.
32:34I don't think so.
32:36He probably would have remembered that.
32:37Bobby Johnson, that punch is up, kid.
32:40Again, Bailey just walking into those straight jabs,
32:43those shotgun jabs,
32:44as Bobby Ches might call.
32:46And he fouls it up,
32:47but does Diaz with an overhand right that scored.
32:51Tremendous volume of punches here by Diaz.
32:54Non-stop action by Diaz.
32:56Stop!
32:57Break!
32:58And it's got to be wearing Bailey down.
33:00I don't care how tough and gutsy this guy is.
33:06Upstairs, downstairs, doing what he wants.
33:14Even that left hand got in by Diaz.
33:16Another left.
33:17That time straight.

33:53hand from underneath by Diaz getting the crowd going well we're seeing the left and the right
33:59here by Diaz and Diaz is getting some tremendous leverage on helping guys bending his knees
34:05the only thing left is for him to score a knockdown we haven't seen that
34:10but Diaz is not a knockdown kind of guy
34:15nine of his 19
34:16my tail break
34:30as we head for the bell another good round for Diaz now well we want to take you back to a night that
34:37was not very good for Juan Diaz September 2001 the scene was El Paso Texas Diaz's toughest fight
34:44and probably the turning point of his young career versus the more experienced Ubaldo Hernandez
34:49Diaz was cut roughed up bruised his hand he thought it might have been broken
34:53and he was dropped in round two down for the first time as a pro or amateur well you can see
34:58Hernandez the veteran working walking Diaz backward pushing him around turning to the side using his
35:04experience experience and his extra fights to gain the advantage his closest call to date
35:10he recovered and picked up an eight round split decision afterwards very emotional when it all sort
35:18of sunk in almost a traumatic experience for Diaz real closest he grew up in a hurry that night
35:23and here he is tonight at mohegan sun looking extremely sharp against a game but overmatched john bailey
35:42you have to be somewhat impressed with this guy's toughness though he has taken a tremendous amount
35:46of punishment and does not really care about it well he knew that going in a right uppercut
35:53by diaz right on the chin of of bailey who just keeps pressing on
36:04let's get it back to jim gray quickly for a report on bailey's corner all right steve uh in between rounds
36:10frank cappuccino the referee walked over and he said to bailey you're taking quite a beating and an
36:14awful lot of shots bailey said i want to continue i'm in great shape cappuccino asked him if he's sure
36:21reminded him he is taking a lot of shots he said i want to continue so here we are steve all right
36:25jim thanks very much frank cappuccino giving bailey as we said earlier the benefit of the doubt
36:30allowing him to continue a lot of guys would have stopped it billy's starting to slow a little bit now
36:36the wear and tear the wear it down the attrition factor setting in pretty quick
36:43this round has come out completely different doesn't have the same tenacity to even his
36:48aggressive nature even though he's getting teed off on the entire first six rounds a little different now
36:52this yes continues to tee off
37:08scoring almost at will
37:13look at that jeff setting up the overhand right but the jab doing damage to the face of bailey
37:18there you see him wiping his eye and a little bit of a wobble on his legs too
37:26break break let him go i don't want to go out on the limb and say it's the worst beating bailey's taken
37:31but i'm sure it's so close to it tell you what it's gonna definitely get a serious grade
37:36maybe only the ricky hatton fight was worse he did tell us that was his toughest fight he got knocked
37:44down four times in a fifth round stoppage in manchester makes a lot of guts to go over there to fight
37:50hat stop fight that's it that's it and barely protests taking too many punches man
38:04i'm in agreement with frank cappuccino
38:08his explanation john too many punches no lie
38:14ask me a question i answer what can you do about
38:19juan diaz without a scratch on his face different story for john bailey
38:26bailey is really ticked off because that's what he's made of
38:31but no he's a genuine tough guy not just by the contest uh that he entered but he's a tough guy
38:36and tough guy with good chins uh take it from someone who knows we don't like never stop
38:42relax well you can hear him he said i could fight blindfolded
38:48that wouldn't be healthy either
38:51wouldn't recommend it
38:54especially against the
38:55you see diaz here on the left what's going to happen
39:05bill is going to come this way and he's going to shoot this jab out
39:09one day is going to come down and right i mean literally right up between his gloves and lay him
39:14almost out with his punch it is a beautiful right hand he lifts him up almost off the ground
39:18oh beautiful it's just that's target practice and he did it all day with lefts and rights
39:26there's nothing bill he could do about it he couldn't see
39:29the counters coming he couldn't see he couldn't deal with the speed
39:32i you know what it's technically kind of a good stoppage although you like to see a guy
39:37who's tough like that give him a chance
39:38uh no way to win being the referee in this fight steve a lopsided victory for juan diaz who goes to
39:5020 and 0 with 10 knockouts let's get the official word from our ring announcer jimmy lennon jr
39:58ladies and gentlemen this bout has been stopped at two minutes 16 seconds of round number seven a
40:04referee in charge frank cappuccino stops the contest bailey receiving too much punishment taking
40:11too many punches the winner by way of technical knockout and he is still undefeated juan diaz
40:22i'll tell you this is a rough room in it for bobby they want to see bailey take more punishment
40:26they just want to see more my goodness what's wrong with these people there's one thing to be
40:32said forgiving a tough guy like that with lesser abilities a chance but there's another to just
40:36think okay you know what let's save this guy let him fight another day that's a tremendous amount
40:40of punishment look at him it's just it really truly is let's get it over to jim gray jim all right thank
40:48you very much steve juan congratulations you systematically and methodically destroyed bailey
40:53here this evening did you ever feel pressured in this fight like there was an opportunity that you were
40:59never out of control of this thing or were you in complete control it appeared to be that you were
41:03in complete control um well my corner was telling me that i was boxing a real smart fight so you know
41:08i stuck to my glam game plan using my jab my uppercuts and and i thank god everything came out perfect
41:14did you calm down a little bit tonight and tone it down because you had told us in the meetings that
41:19that was something you were concerned about extending too much energy too soon did you fight your plan as
41:24you wanted tonight uh well yeah i mean as you've seen before i've gone uh 10 rounds before and uh
41:30throwing a lot of punches but i believe that you know as i grow older i learn more and you know i
41:36settle down a little bit more of my punches even in the later rounds instead of just going out to the
41:40first couple of rounds and wasting all my energy uh-huh when do you think you might want to take a step
41:46up and and fight somebody a top 10 guy at what point uh well it depends it's up to my manager and
41:52willie savannah my promoter main events you know it's up to them when they tell me i'm ready
41:56i believe that they're telling me the right thing still in school you're going to stay in school and
42:01continue continue at the university oh yeah i'm still at the university of houston because you know
42:05boxing is never guaranteed so you know hopefully one day i want to become a lawyer that's a lot to
42:11admire congratulations and we look forward to uh seeing you fight again why thank you very much and i
42:16also want to thank all my staff willie savannah brought brian caldwell my strength trainer and
42:21derwin richards ronny shields and joe susa all right thank you very much by the way frank cappuccino
42:26we asked him to come on camera he said his actions speak for themselves here in the ring he's been
42:31around an awful long time he said shields was just taking bailey was taking just far too many punches
42:36and he would not put him at risk any further and he did not want to speak to us he said that's enough
42:41everybody can see it out there steve all right jim i agree with frank cappuccino if the end is a
42:47foregone conclusion no reason to to see anyone get hurt and nice to hear from the grounded juan
42:53diaz afterwards who may quietly emerge as the most promising of the three prospects on tonight's card
42:59let's dissect this thing a bit further
43:09you
