00:00:00ends will serve as sixth man for their beloved favorite son they're already
00:00:07making a lot of noise and coming up next for the pit our main event the champion
00:00:12Jorge Eliezer Julio steps into Johnny Tapia's noisy backyard in defense of the
00:00:17WBO phantom weight crown Tapia's 17th world title fight unbeaten more than 12
00:00:22years before the loss to Pauly Ayala Julio unbeaten it over six years 16
00:00:26straight wins
00:00:30June 26 1999 Las Vegas Nevada Johnny Tapia versus Pauly Ayala for Tapia's WBA
00:00:37bantamweight title the fight of the year however it was Tapia's first loss in 49
00:00:42fights can he rebound from his first career setback Tapia relived the moment
00:00:46put it all in perspective
00:00:50it wasn't a thinking fight it wasn't a smart fight but it was a beautiful fight the way we did it
00:01:04every round we got it on it's just a beautiful beautiful fight when WBA bantamweight champion
00:01:12Johnny Tapia met highly regarded number two contender Pauly Ayala many ringside observers believed it will be a tactical battle between two skilled technicians
00:01:22instead they were treated to one of the year's most memorable brawls
00:01:26what a slugfest the action just won't let up I could have boxed him stuck and moving but I love what I was doing
00:01:33toe-to-toe in the center of the ring there was so emotional in there that that
00:01:38none of us thought what we were doing what are the best this has got to be a candidate for fight of the year
00:01:43with the contest so close and so difficult to score eyebrows were raised by the one-sided decision
00:01:50all three in favor of the winner and the new WBA bantamweight champion
00:01:55the world got shocked it was a shockiest feeling ever in my life
00:01:59I don't know how they called it a unanimous decision but I know you had two warriors give it their all and it was a beautiful fight
00:02:06how does a fighter respond after the first loss of his career
00:02:11with illusions of their invulnerability shattered some quickly deteriorate
00:02:15others however become stronger tougher and more determined
00:02:20I feel lost without my belt I have my belt for so many years
00:02:24but you can never keep a good man down
00:02:26I don't I've been to too many wars out in the streets and everywhere else
00:02:30and made myself come back so I want to be a bigger and better man by getting my belt back
00:02:35well there's there's no question Tapia versus Ayala was one for the books but what about the decision were you at all surprised by the scores
00:02:48two of the three judges had at 116 to 113 Ayala seemed a lot closer didn't it
00:02:53why many but no doubt had it a draw others still perhaps viewed it as a win for Tapia
00:02:57but clearly the fight was so compelling almost any decision would have been acceptable
00:03:02we turn back to Bobby Chez Bobby so many fighters think they're invincible
00:03:07what's it like after that first career setback how does that feel
00:03:10we know not many fighters think they're invincible right off the bat from when you first start out
00:03:14it's one of those things where after 20 wins 30 wins 40 plus wins like Johnny Tapia had
00:03:18that you start to think I can't be beat I'm invincible and sometimes that's a good thing
00:03:23and sometimes it's not by a fighter's nature we like to think that we can beat everybody
00:03:26now what happens with that first loss is one of two or three things Steve some fighters fold
00:03:30they just lose their confidence they never become the fighter that they could have been
00:03:34and they still had that confidence other fighters obsess over that loss and they stay great
00:03:38good but they never get to great and other fighters take it takes the pressure off
00:03:42okay I lost let's get on with it and get back to my winning ways
00:03:45that's what Johnny Tapia is gonna do tonight seems like you just gave the keys to victory
00:03:49for the both the fight but how about the keys to victory for the main event
00:03:52well I'll tell you what the keys to victory for the champion Julio
00:03:55he has to keep Tapia moving backwards he has to stay aggressive with punches
00:03:58and a good overhand right that's a signature punch here you have Julio on the right
00:04:02he's always applying pressure he's coming in coming in here he comes in
00:04:06goes to make move doesn't even throw then he throws the left that doesn't even land
00:04:10but the overhand right is right on the temple we watch here he misses the left hand
00:04:14but that right hand and him and his is all but out
00:04:21and Johnny Tapia he has to use that incredible speed he has and use it in multiple combinations
00:04:27he does it so well and box smart not just from the inside but also from the outside
00:04:31here we see Tapia he's on the outside he uses a perfect example of smart boxing inside
00:04:36he works a right uppercut underneath right hook switches over to southpaw as we watch
00:04:41he'll turn Ayala there's the uppercut switches to southpaw throws the right hand
00:04:44now as he's a southpaw he's gonna double jab with the right hand and throw a beautiful left cross
00:04:48that lands very clean on Ayala and move out so he cannot be countered smart boxing on the outside
00:04:54this is what Johnny Tapia must continue to do
00:04:57well Bobby as you know Johnny Tapia energized by the prospect of recapturing a world title
00:05:02in front of family friends and fans from the town in which he was born and raised
00:05:05tonight a rare occurrence as Tapia enters first nevertheless ever the showman

00:08:36Let's go.
00:08:37Let's go.
00:08:41Fourth title defense for Julio.
00:08:43Very cool and confident despite the hostile environment.
00:08:47fourth title defense for julio very cool and confident despite the hostile environment
00:08:55one loss in 43 fights to junior jones in 93 who's going to fight prince nasim hamed in london
00:09:04this guy's a big banger who usually makes terrific fights also shows good boxing sense
00:09:11but we've seen him look either very good or very bad some felt he didn't deserve his title win over
00:09:16oscar moldonato in 97 last march in a tremendous fight he won a split decision over tough southpaw
00:09:22julio gomboa to retain the title i thought julio this julio lost he's a two-time champion also won
00:09:29the wba bantamweight belt and ferney julio tends to break slowly from the gate can he afford to
00:09:35start slowly in this one i don't believe anybody's going to start slow in this fight this is the kind
00:09:40of fight where both men are so supercharged up they want to put some hurt on the other guy i want to
00:09:45get attention i don't think either one can afford to or can get to a point where he's slow as uh they
00:09:52say when you're when you're drawer to drawer with somebody you got to shoot crap tapia's career a
00:09:57saga of triumph and tragedy the one constant has been his ability to win big fights tonight again as
00:10:03he tries to wash away the bitter taste of his first defeat by winning another title
00:10:11and we'll see if julio's opponent here johnny tapia
00:10:15can harness that energy and guard against being too keyed up which could result in a costly mistake
00:10:21against jorge julio let's size him up as we check out the tail of the tape johnny tapia turns 33 next
00:10:29month julio is 30 the height almost even both just under the 118 weight limit but tapia's trainer freddie
00:10:36road said johnny would be 130 by fight time slight one inch engine reach for julio key rules no standing
00:10:42in the 128 no three knockdown rule a fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round if an accidental
00:10:47headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth the fight's a technical draw after the end of round four

00:14:21tonight making the fourth defense of his title here is the former wba and current defending wbo bantamweight
00:14:29champion of the world introducing jorge eliezer julio
00:14:43once again a referee in charge mike ortega now to give instructions
00:14:47the gentleman we went over the rules i want a good clean fight obey my commands at all times okay
00:15:00okay right here it's good it's a little high okay okay right here from here up it's good all right
00:15:16good luck to both of you touch them up
00:15:18well remember remember tapia shoved paulie ayala before that fight very emotional
00:15:28jorge julio and johnny tapia will tapia be smart and elusive as he was in victory over danny romero
00:15:36will he go toe-to-toe to prove he can out punch julio as he did when he lost to paulie ayala
00:15:42jorge julio saying he prayed to god for a long time to fight a big name like tapia he dearly
00:15:49wants to win here in albuquerque to make a name for himself and pretty looked like he was he was
00:15:53doing a little praying there in the corner i thought he had he was doing a mantra he was
00:15:57chanting to himself he did started at the dressing room and went all the way very good looking kid
00:16:01smiling looks like blair underwood used to look when he was a very young actor a very good looking
00:16:06very cool and composed and here we go i'll tell you when we talked to him in the interviews he said
00:16:10i respect happy as a person but not as a fighter he has nothing for me to respect i'm better in all
00:16:15aspects even saying that he was quicker on top of everything else which i thought was johnny tapia's
00:16:19biggest trait tapia says his game plan was to stay on the outside and box stay focused somehow tune out
00:16:25the ground stay composed he is so motivated aside from trying to please his wife and himself he wants to
00:16:33show that that you can lose the title and come back to win a title again he told us he won't do
00:16:38anything unusual unless julio does something dirty he threw a good hook on the right hand right after
00:16:45it they've been at a range where they're not really connecting right now but it is tapia on the attack
00:16:51i ever slighted as he is on the attack
00:16:55biggest thing he learned from the iana fight he didn't stick with his game plan got yelled at by
00:17:00freddie roach's trainer if you look in the eyes of tapia he is extremely focused you can see it's
00:17:07almost like he's in the trance but that is tapping you know when they say they try to cool down the
00:17:11fight around but that is him he is one of those out of control guys when he gets going and he can't be
00:17:16stopped not freddie roach not anybody angelo dundie can stop he goes he goes and the wait for this fight
00:17:22says johnny champion was agonizing he is so happy that that first bill has run he weighs 135 oh nice
00:17:31right hand good straight right hand that got through the defense simonio first good punch of the night
00:17:36it's offered up by johnny tapia who talked about the fact that he thought his speed was going to be the
00:17:41biggest factor i think that's one place where he's at you know at a disadvantage tapia's speed is better
00:17:46i thought it was power maybe a little better but he just talked about his speed in the interviews
00:17:50and also tapia said if he doesn't stay focused he could lose this fight the same way he did with
00:17:54ayala they're both fairly strong tapia wants to move up to 122 another good right hand by tapia strong
00:18:02there's that jab keeping that jab on the face of julio is johnny tapia you see so quick in and then he's
00:18:08out nothing to hit but air that'd be with all the spiritual tattoos on his back madonna his mother
00:18:16his mother his mother who was murdered when he was only eight years old
00:18:24well right off the bat i'm wondering what julio is waiting for if he's gonna fight this way
00:18:28he's gonna really get me in for a weapon julio historically a slow starter now he comes forth with
00:18:33the jab but he's hitting here he's not hitting it again right now tapia taking to the body with left
00:18:41right now tapia also seems to be punching just a little stronger than usual yeah he looks like
00:18:47he's got a message in those punches they've been very strong very quick there you go nice shot to the body
00:18:54a straight right to the belly by johnny tapia what's happening but you know the current history of
00:19:00johnny tapia but already
00:19:04both of them have a history of cutting here's the tapping corner with treddy roach
00:19:10deep breath watch this
00:19:14okay so you're very good out there you find it smart okay now remember keep that chin down okay
00:19:19watch that headbutt okay the one two is working beautiful for you it's here for you okay yeah
00:19:26let's see the double jab and put the right hand right down the middle okay so here keep using
00:19:30feints and box johnny tapia very focused early on stalking julio nice right hand and one two
00:19:37he wants to send a message early he's punching harder than usual
00:19:42here comes the accidental headbutt they come running into one another
00:19:45and there they crash heads that's just as clean and clear as it could be but also
00:19:52actually like and also 50-50 was leaning in the other guy leaned in i mean how can you help that
00:19:58i mean that's one of those who are both of them
00:20:03cuts one of the problems for johnny tapia over the course of time but he seems to do his best
00:20:09fighting after he begins to bleed he's also had 20 broken noses in the room
00:20:17appears to be a new strategy a little more movement forward coming in with punches seems to want to
00:20:23get busier quicker but maybe that first round was one of those feel out rounds that they're talking
00:20:29about but he just got he just blew around for fun he didn't fight that left hook just missing by
00:20:35johnny tapio taking a running leap into the body of johnny
00:20:41campi a smart fighter knows how to neutralize his opponent's strengths he did that against romero
00:20:46he did that with danny's power he's got tremendous heart and desire and his conditioning is
00:20:51tremendous attention is electric you can feel it in this crowd it's it's almost like you're just
00:20:58waiting for this guy to explode do something and and yet tapio is beating him to the punch and taking
00:21:03the fight away from jorge julio his fourth title defense he's won 16th straight
00:21:14he's clearly telling his moves not just with his hands but with his feet his speed is going to be the
00:21:18difference in the difference in this fight
00:21:24not only is the man he is but he isn't getting hit and returning
00:21:29tapio always aggressive two-fisted fighter here's a straight right a smashing right that fits and the
00:21:36crowd erupts
00:21:39julio has to put a little more pressure on throw a few more punches maybe draw johnny into a little
00:21:43bit more of a slugfest make johnny lose his focus and it's cool if he wants to do better
00:21:48watch his shoulder and he must put the shoulder without from an elbow the warning to tapio to watch
00:21:54the shoulder jorge julio overall ability and talent his strength very aggressive has power
00:22:04usually very exciting he is more than willing to take two to give one
00:22:08he's had good quality of opposition good stamina and strength but he's also throwing one punch at a time
00:22:20if he if he misses he just um locks in with uh tapio or tapio is gone he's not throwing two and three punches as he should
00:22:27less than 30 seconds remaining in round two scheduled for 12 for the wbo bantamweight championship
00:22:37the night's over here right by julio poor johnny on the year okay watch ahead probably his best foot
00:22:42punch so far referee says watch your heads they're banging heads in there
00:22:46that's the first time i've seen them throw three punches together it made sense
00:22:55so a little flurry at the end of the second round by the champion jorge jorio
00:22:59but so far the fight has been dominated by the challenger hometown's favorite johnny champion
00:23:05the fighter's saying give me water give me water and they're saying throw more than one punch
00:23:29he says he's too straight the fighter just said he's too straight
00:23:35like he's just anybody else but be first he's nothing special
00:23:50you first you're faster
00:23:51combinations and receive him when he comes in with a jab
00:24:06because he's too straight to start round three again
00:24:12easy cut right watch the heads colliding i even was able to to make out what mike ortega said there
00:24:20he was constantly
00:24:23i'm hanging around you perry picking up some awesome
00:24:27This is the type of fight who there needs to be in he needs to be going forward punch out
00:24:44I don't know what he was waiting for but he blew his first two rounds
00:24:47This is what he should have been doing
00:24:48But is he good enough to take Tapia here on his home turf
00:24:55For settling in between rounds he was a little too straight up straight up and down makes a bigger target for Johnny
00:25:01Head and body it makes him harder for Julio to be offensive
00:25:05He has to go into a crack before firing
00:25:07Julio a lot more aggressive here at round three than of the first two rounds
00:25:11He looks like a champion now. He looks like a guy knows how to box knows how to fight and wants to mix it up
00:25:15now
00:25:16Copy a try again
00:25:17He's trying to get a headbutt again
00:25:18To head
00:25:20They banged hands again
00:25:22I mean if you see how much referee Mike or taken will take before he starts to give warnings and take points in that instance
00:25:30He just said fight on
00:25:32Left tough there, but a grazing blow by Tapia now Johnny Tapia is being guilty of the same thing who has been for the past two rounds of one at a time
00:25:40Not combinations, which is his trademark
00:25:42The headbutts and the cutting picking up the urgency now for Tapia
00:25:46Oh, they came together again
00:25:48Come here, come here, come here
00:25:50Come here, come here
00:25:51Come here
00:25:52Come here, come here
00:25:53Come here
00:25:54Okay, look at this is the last time
00:25:55And now Mike Ortega looking to take charge
00:25:56Okay, next time I'm going to take a point from somebody
00:25:58Okay, next time I'm taking a point from somebody
00:26:00Okay, next time I'm taking a point from somebody
00:26:02To do fairness, they both bang into each other
00:26:04They're both ducked and put their heads forward
00:26:06All right, less than a minute to go in round three
00:26:08Good round, good action round
00:26:09And headbutting becoming a big factor
00:26:11Nice left hook by Johnny Tapia to the body
00:26:17Nice jab by Tapia, back comes Julio
00:26:20Boy, Julio is a different fighter this round
00:26:22How about the offensive defense of Tapia?
00:26:24Comes back with two straight rights
00:26:26I think Tapia's having a little bit of trouble right now
00:26:30Some of the strength that Julio's displayed
00:26:33He's showing that he's got some strength
00:26:35But I'll tell you what he's done
00:26:38What Tapia's done, he has not neglected the body
00:26:40He has put in some very heavy body punishment here
00:26:42As Julio comes in, he gets punished by hooks to the body
00:26:47That's got to tell
00:26:48Julio with 31 knockouts and 42 in
00:26:52Big right hand on the head by Tapia towards the end of round three
00:26:56And then a left hook to the chin by Tapia
00:26:59No!
00:27:0015 Dark
00:27:08Excellent, excellent round
00:27:21OK JT nice deep breath son
00:27:23All right, JT, that was a good round here, down here.
00:27:27Keep it up, keep it up.
00:27:29Johnny, listen to me, okay?
00:27:32We're gonna take a look at the first of those butts.
00:27:34You watch now as these guys come to one another,
00:27:37as they're coming to one another.
00:27:39Tapio moves his head this way, and Julio comes this way,
00:27:42and watch, they just slam right into one another.
00:27:44They both duck and just bend over as we roll the tape.
00:27:46They just come into one another, head down, both of them,
00:27:49right into one another.
00:27:50They both just kind of crouch into one another.
00:27:52Julio, in that case, was going to the body.
00:27:54Here, you can see Tapio, same thing.
00:27:56He comes in head down, Julio puts his head down,
00:27:59and they slam into one another.
00:28:01That one was more Johnny's fault than it was Julio's.
00:28:03He came in like a football player just then.
00:28:05You'd think he had a helmet on.
00:28:07Three headbutt incidents in round three,
00:28:10and also the most inspired action of the night,
00:28:13that comes Julio to open up round four.
00:28:16The four hammering hooks on the butt,
00:28:19driving him into the ropes.
00:28:21Tapio didn't seem to be bothered, but he sure shot some hard hooks.
00:28:28This is the type of aggressive fight with the big punches that Julio needs to have,
00:28:31needs to apply himself like this throughout the fight,
00:28:33if he's going to be victorious.
00:28:35Big left hook there, the shoulder though.
00:28:38Johnny Tapio didn't have that much impact on Julio.
00:28:41Boy, Julio looks like a completely different fighter than the guy we saw in the first two rounds.
00:28:45Got his wake-up call.
00:28:46He noticed right before the end of the last round,
00:28:48Johnny Tapio threw a one-two-three to another one-two and staggered Julio.
00:28:52After he needs to do the combination, doubling him up.
00:28:54That was with about seven, eight seconds left in the third round when he did that.
00:28:57I hate to tell you, but that made it an even round for me,
00:29:01but it was up to that point I was giving it to Julio.
00:29:03Julio attempting the right uppercut, but it missed.
00:29:07And he misses with the left.
00:29:09So underrated is Tapio's defense.
00:29:12Oh, look at the shot to the body.
00:29:14Great defensive movement by Johnny Tapio.
00:29:18Tapio's a killer to the body, but he just doesn't fall.
00:29:20Oh, there was a straight left hand to the rims by Tapio.
00:29:24He switched real quick and then turned southpaw through the left hand
00:29:27as the cross as opposed to his right.
00:29:29Both fighters have been number two.
00:29:30Turn southpaw.
00:29:33Oh, a right uppercut on the chin by Tapio.
00:29:37Nice, nice.
00:29:40Tapio moving beautifully away from the charge
00:29:42and then coming back with more.
00:29:44But Julio's got a terrific chin.
00:29:45He seemed unfazed by it.
00:29:47But he's hitting a lot of air right now, Steve.
00:29:49He's doing what he's supposed to.
00:29:50He staggered Julio again.
00:29:52A flurry there by the challenger, Johnny Tapio.
00:29:55Look at this foot movement by Tapio.
00:29:57The elusiveness, slipping and sliding.
00:29:59We walked about multiple combinations being one of those keys.
00:30:03He throws a combination, he comes right back at a follow-up,
00:30:06and Julio doesn't adjust.
00:30:08Julio's not throwing to the body.
00:30:10And Tapio, not at all.
00:30:12Right hand by Johnny Tapio.
00:30:14A double straight right hand.
00:30:15I don't know if you know how hard it is to throw that cleanly.
00:30:17Back comes Julio though, but it's so hard to catch Tapio.
00:30:20He won't stop moving.
00:30:22Tapio's scoring, and Julio missing.
00:30:26That's what's happening.
00:30:27Tapio looking extremely sharp.
00:30:29Whipping shots in to the head and body.
00:30:32Oh, what a right hand by Julio answered back with a shot of his arm.
00:30:36And Julio's turning the south one now, but he's not doing good as a south four at all.
00:30:39Yeah, but look at that, if we know.
00:30:41Left right combination of the head by Johnny Tapio.
00:30:48Tremendous action here in round four.
00:30:50That's the elbow.
00:30:51All right.
00:30:52Another right, a right cross to the left side of the head by Johnny.
00:30:55Julio's slow down somewhat.
00:30:56This pounding is beginning to wear out Julio.
00:30:58Time!
00:30:59The bell to win round four.
00:31:00What a round!
00:31:01Wow!
00:31:02Okay, son.
00:31:03Nice deep breath.
00:31:04You're looking good out there.
00:31:05Keep that boxing going, Johnny.
00:31:06Stay on your toes, okay?
00:31:08Never, no slut test with this guy.
00:31:09Alright?
00:31:10Quick combination, off to the side.
00:31:11Now you're moving away from the right hand, beautiful.
00:31:12Keep that going, okay?
00:31:13You're frustrated and then you're starting to take chances, okay?
00:31:14But don't fall for it yet, okay?
00:31:15Keep the margin of life.
00:31:16You're out, you're out.
00:31:17Keep that going, you're out.
00:31:18Okay?
00:31:19Have a good touchdown.
00:31:20Man, you're out.
00:31:21And you're out.
00:31:22Well, we just have to go for it.
00:31:23Oh, man.
00:31:24Well, we just have to do a lot of other things.
00:31:25You're out, you're out.
00:31:26And you're out, we have to go.
00:31:27Hey, we have to go, man.
00:31:28You're out, we have to go.
00:31:29You're out, we have to go, man.
00:31:30now you're moving away from the right hand beautiful keep that going okay you're frustrating
00:31:34and he's starting to take chances okay but don't fall for it yet okay keep frustrating this guy
00:31:39you're winning every round out there keep frustrating this man side to side moving
00:31:44probably tappy his best round he switched around to a lot of straight lead right hands
00:31:49there is a south pole who they're not very effective at blocking him that was a beautiful
00:31:52double right hand very hard to throw for north of the ducks fighter there's the right hand
00:31:56he's landing that right hand probably more than that round he had the entire previous three that
00:32:02was just beautiful boxing switching up orthodox southpaw under over inside and that was beautiful
00:32:08or freddy's advice is you're taking every round oh nice overhand right you look like he's throwing
00:32:13a football on colio begins the fifth round with a huge shot to the head he was going for the haymaker
00:32:20these two fighters both champions drawing plenty of punches and they're both scoring
00:32:26and they're both scoring and they're both scoring and they're both scoring and they're both scoring
00:32:42here's the online scoring and the folks at home having a shutout for tapio i have a three to one for
00:32:48tapio i did give the third round to julio i think it was more effective for much more of the round that last
00:32:54seven second combination wasn't enough to turn around behind i have a three for tapio and one a draw
00:33:02oh julio just walked into a straight left hand
00:33:04jab steve that was a power jab that'll get your attention
00:33:10but julio game brave just keeps coming forward
00:33:13he's eating a lot of leather now to the body downstairs goes tapio he's mixing it up oh what a
00:33:23beautiful countering left jab there by tapio
00:33:25he glances over at the ref thought he was pushed
00:33:30uh-oh down tapio as he's shoved down by julio the crowd reacts first and ten
00:33:38okay
00:33:39all right yeah tapio says he's all right to the third man from the ring mike ortega and continues
00:33:47a minute 20 left in round five julio steps up the pace
00:33:51Johnny hasn't been terribly effective in his round most of the moving defensive work.
00:33:58Julio starting to gain momentum a little bit.
00:34:01And the crowd urging on the challenger.
00:34:06Julio continues to come forward, but Tappi is doing most of the damage.
00:34:12It's almost as if Tappi has decided to take this round off a little.
00:34:16From the fierceness of the first floor.
00:34:21Tappi is 46-1-2 with 25 knockouts.
00:34:24His 17th world title fight.
00:34:2614-1-1.
00:34:27The only loss to Pauli Ayala in his last fight.
00:34:30Digging left to the body by Tappi.
00:34:32You go hook to the body.
00:34:34Those are digging.
00:34:35Digging.
00:34:38Look at this movement again.
00:34:41And he jumps out and stuffs that jab again, a power jab.
00:34:44Well, this is the best Tappi has looked in a long time.
00:34:48Well, he's fighting very sensibly.
00:34:50That's one thing like Freddie Roach wants him to.
00:34:52The craziness has gone.
00:34:54He's just fighting good.
00:34:55Keep him up, John.
00:34:56He's harnessing his emotions and his energy.
00:34:59And very cool and composed.
00:35:00Look at that slipping away.
00:35:03Three-punch combination.
00:35:05The hands.
00:35:06We have guns back on one punch.
00:35:07Time!
00:35:08Johnny Tappi doing what he does best.
00:35:30Hit and not get hit.
00:35:31Throws the...
00:35:32Moves out of the way.
00:35:32Uppercut.
00:35:33Moves off.
00:35:34Backs out.
00:35:35Here again.
00:35:36Right hand.
00:35:36Double right hand.
00:35:37Backs out.
00:35:38Working the jab.
00:35:39Working the jab.
00:35:40Body shots.
00:35:41And out.
00:35:41Right uppercut.
00:35:43He knows how to hit and not be hit.
00:35:45Here's the little tackle.
00:35:49Tappi misses a punch.
00:35:50Goes over the top and kind of gets tackled by the champion Julio.
00:35:55That stuff happens.
00:35:58Well, through five rounds, Johnny Tappi has been more successful than Jorge Julio in delivering
00:36:05on Bobby Chez's keys to victory.
00:36:08Tappi has been effective in shooting that left jab just as Julio has been coming forward.
00:36:13That has been a big key here tonight.
00:36:16But you see, when Julio comes forward like this, he hasn't been able to a lot.
00:36:19But when he comes forward like this, that's when he's most effective.
00:36:21Keeping Johnny back, moving back, moving back and off balance.
00:36:25But Johnny's stuffing that jab and offsetting that beautifully.
00:36:28He's fighting such an intelligent fight here.
00:36:30The challenger, Johnny Tappi.
00:36:32He's keeping his head.
00:36:33That's what I like.
00:36:35He's working what he needs to work.
00:36:36And he's walking away from the rest.
00:36:39He's going to help him right in the face, too.
00:36:40Yeah, Tappi has just had a lot of that.
00:36:42He claims he was headbutt top of the head.
00:36:46The referee is allowing Tappi, if you'll notice, to wear that belt real high.
00:36:52These pants are just falling down, Steve, is what it is.
00:36:54Yeah.
00:36:55Mike, uh, Ortega is being very kind.
00:36:58That was a bad elbow.
00:36:59That was a straight forward elbow.
00:37:05Tappi delivering a left hook right up the cuff by Julio.
00:37:07There's another elbow playing Tappi by Julio.
00:37:10He's complaining to the referee, Ortega.
00:37:14Well, it may be.
00:37:15Oh, nice.
00:37:16Beautiful arm right.
00:37:17Explosive thundering right hand over the top by Tappi.
00:37:21And what's holding Julio up?
00:37:23Yeah, you're starting to think, wait a minute,
00:37:25when's this guy going to start feeling a little of this?
00:37:27They're hard and they're awful.
00:37:29I understand, too, Johnny Tappi's not a huge puncher.
00:37:32He's a combination puncher.
00:37:33He knocks you out by stinging you and following up with five or six shots
00:37:36before you clear your head.
00:37:37He's not a one-punch knockout artist.
00:37:39For that, a resounding right hand.
00:37:41Still, it's been a waterfall of punches on this guy.
00:37:44Especially for the body.
00:37:45Something should be cutting off his energy.
00:37:47But it's that beautiful jab by Johnny Tappi
00:37:50who's putting out a boxing exhibition here.
00:37:53Julio again trying to drop forward with the left elbow.
00:38:10There's a jab by Tappi.
00:38:11He's got two jabes.
00:38:12Back comes Julio with a combination of the hand.
00:38:15See, on the inside, Julio is able to impose himself on Tappi.
00:38:18He's able to impose his strength
00:38:20and his little bit of night advantage using it.
00:38:23Uh-oh, uh-oh.
00:38:24Hitting on the break.
00:38:25Bad deal.
00:38:25Yeah, a take of the referee,
00:38:27which is coming in to break him up.
00:38:28And Tappi with a dirty tackle.
00:38:32That's a no-no.
00:38:33Yeah.
00:38:33Well, this is getting to be a little good.
00:38:37There's been a lot of head-butting, elbows,
00:38:39now hitting on the break.
00:38:40Oh.
00:38:41Well, Tappi said if Julio would get dirty,
00:38:43he'd get dirty.
00:38:44He feels that Julio's being dirty with the elbows.
00:38:47So he is countering what we just saw.
00:38:52Johnny Tappi's jab has kept him out of a lot of trouble tonight
00:38:55because I still think that Jorge Julio
00:38:57appears to be the stronger of the two.
00:39:00They're connecting all over Tappi.
00:39:02No, no, no, no.
00:39:04No, no, no.
00:39:05Now he's starting to lose.
00:39:06Oh, no.
00:39:07Tappi losing his cool
00:39:08and he throws the champion into the ropes.
00:39:09We've been talking to him just then.
00:39:10He was talking to him just then
00:39:11and he blew his cool just then.
00:39:12All right, now things getting out of hand.
00:39:14No, it's getting real.
00:39:15Getting the other way.
00:39:18Freddy Roach complaining to the referee
00:39:20now about the elbows by Julio.
00:39:22All right.
00:39:24Defense, J.K.
00:39:26Hey, Johnny.
00:39:27Johnny.
00:39:28Johnny.
00:39:31Johnny.
00:39:32All right.
00:39:33Let's go.
00:39:34You got to go with the one-two straight punches
00:39:35and off to the side, okay?
00:39:36Get off the ropes, okay?
00:39:37We don't have that round, okay?
00:39:39You're staying on the ropes for long,
00:39:40you're fighting his dance, okay?
00:39:42Johnny.
00:39:43Let's go quick.
00:39:44One-two, off to the side, okay?
00:39:45Okay.
00:39:46Side to side.
00:39:47Turn him into punches.
00:39:48When you step, he'll follow you.
00:39:49Don't lose your head.
00:39:50Don't lose your head.
00:39:51Don't lose your head.
00:39:52Go with his punches.
00:39:53Pressure, pressure.
00:39:54Don't lose your head.
00:39:55Don't lose your head.
00:39:56Don't lose your head.
00:39:57Don't lose your head.
00:39:58Go with his punches.
00:39:59Pressure and think.
00:40:00You got to rattle.
00:40:01Pressure and think.
00:40:02You got to rattle.
00:40:03Pressure and think.
00:40:04Halfway off beneficial scores.
00:40:05Mine is 56-59 for Johnny Tapia.
00:40:06I have it 58-56 for Johnny Tapia, four rounds to two.
00:40:08Champion probably needs to win about five of the final six rounds.
00:40:09If it goes through a decision, it would be very tough to do here.
00:40:18It was interesting, too, that Julio said he felt he had a better state of mind coming
00:40:23into this fight.
00:40:24Coming off the loss, Tapia, he felt it was a good time to catch him with his mental state
00:40:30down, as he put it.
00:40:31Let's go down to Jim Gray.
00:40:32All right, Steve.
00:40:33In between rounds, Mike Ortega, the referee, went over to Tapia's corner and told Tapia,
00:40:48quit complaining and just fight.
00:40:49Let me referee the fight.
00:40:50You fight.
00:40:51Steve.
00:40:52Here comes Tapia.
00:40:53Thank you, Jim.
00:40:54Tapia unloading.
00:40:55And Julio coming back.
00:40:56Julio coming back.
00:40:57Julio coming back.
00:40:58Julio with a left hand.
00:40:59Julio with a left uppercut.
00:41:00That's a straight left hand by Tapia.
00:41:05Everybody's got answers.
00:41:06Julio trying to take Tapia out of his game.
00:41:11And it may be working because Tapia is starting to lose his cool here.
00:41:15They have two common opponents.
00:41:17Both fighters beat those common opponents by decision, no knockouts.
00:41:21So these guys are definitely at a comparable stage in their lives.
00:41:26Terrific matchup.
00:41:27Well, that whole opening was even.
00:41:28Both men belabored each other, but they were equal.
00:41:29One guy got in a lot of shots up to the other.
00:41:30Here's a bullet straight right hand to the head by Tapia.
00:41:31Tapia then digging to the body with the left uppercut.
00:41:32Missing with the right and the left and the right.
00:41:33He missed with all those punches.
00:41:34The crowd reacts.
00:41:35There, that left hand made it though.
00:41:36A lot of punches being thrown by Tapia.
00:41:40And you know he's being a lot more accurate.
00:41:41He's landing a shot much more cleanly.
00:41:42He's pressing, but he's not pressing as effectively as he needs to.
00:41:47We approach the bottom of it at around seven.
00:41:48Oh, another, another.
00:41:49And Tapia complains again.
00:41:50Directly by Cortega.
00:41:51The referee keeps saying, quit complaining.
00:41:52And let me referee.
00:41:53The other guy even complaining.
00:41:54They hurt equally.
00:41:55And he's hurting.
00:41:56He's hurting.
00:41:57He's hurting.
00:41:58He's hurting.
00:41:59He's hurting.
00:42:00A lot of punches being thrown by Tapia.
00:42:01And you know he's being a lot more accurate.
00:42:02He's landing a shot much more cleanly.
00:42:03Real pressing, but he's not pressing as effectively as he needs to.
00:42:08We approach the bottom of it at around seven.
00:42:11Oh, another, another.
00:42:12And Tapia complains again.
00:42:14Directly by Cortega.
00:42:15The referee keeps saying, quit complaining.
00:42:16And let me referee.
00:42:17The other guy even complaining.
00:42:18They hurt equally.
00:42:19And Julio just fights on.
00:42:21Timeout, not being called.
00:42:22Timeout, not being called.
00:42:23One point.
00:42:24Oh, he's taking a point away from the champion.
00:42:25One point.
00:42:26Oh, he's taking a point away from the champion.
00:42:27One point.
00:42:28One point.
00:42:29Champion.
00:42:30With the elbow on the inside again.
00:42:32Elbow.
00:42:33And wasn't the headbutter as the elbow takes a point away for?
00:42:34Time in.
00:42:35Now that could be big.
00:42:36Yes.
00:42:37As we were going along there, Tapia was just edging in and winning that round.
00:42:41Now if he wins the round and they take a point, big, big round, big round.
00:42:42Now that could be big because as we were going along there, Tapia was just edging in and winning that
00:42:47Big big round big round
00:42:50Championship fight big round less than 30 seconds left of the summer
00:42:54No, no
00:42:56Toe-toe the center of the right right here nobody's budging and the referees think without meaning be careful be careful
00:43:07Beautiful lift up I couldn't believe by the champion. Yeah right cross by
00:43:17That was a four-punch combination to the head by tapio and two body shots before it
00:43:25Because of the taking away the point
00:43:29Let's go inside the ropes with Bobby chairs
00:43:34What's turned into a little bit of a foul fest they've gotten a lot here's you'll see headbutt
00:43:41Another headbutt another headbutt
00:43:47Attack a tackle
00:43:52Elbow in the face
00:43:57Another elbow forearm and a hit after the break
00:44:01Foul fest ensues
00:44:05Here's the elbow where the point got taken away they get inside right here
00:44:09You see he clearly just swings it around and twice so the referee had if not once he got two shots at it
00:44:16That was obvious blatant
00:44:18Every round though tapio's corner is cautioning him not to let julio rush into him at the beginning of each round
00:44:24They're also telling him to keep your chin down and stay on your toes
00:44:29And here just like the last few rounds julio comes rushing in on tapio
00:44:33I think he feels some urgency now
00:44:38I mean this has been going on pretty evenly as far as this corner is concerned but now he's had a point taken away
00:44:43Nice right hand by the champion there
00:44:45And that's raw
00:44:47And that's raw the
00:44:53Very upset okay at the tactics
00:44:55Julio thought once again that he came in on purpose with the head
00:44:57He's been clean, he's been clean
00:44:59And he's got tapio upset
00:45:01And again he gets him out of his game
00:45:03Oh
00:45:05He walked
00:45:07Jorge Julio with a shot
00:45:09Julio has got him
00:45:11When he did step in with that big jab
00:45:13And Julio walked right into it
00:45:15And he's trying to finish it
00:45:19The heart of Julio
00:45:21Can't be a plane to the crowd
00:45:23Is
00:45:25Going to the bodies
00:45:27But back comes Julio to the bodies
00:45:29What an exchange
00:45:33Look at Julio coming back now
00:45:35Right now I still feel, believe it or not, that Julio
00:45:37After absorbing all his punishment
00:45:39Is the stronger of the two
00:45:43The crowd exhorting Johnny Tapia
00:45:47Half way through the 8th round
00:45:49Scheduled for 12 for the WBO battle white belt
00:45:51A low blow there but it was
00:45:53It was on the break
00:45:55Hitting on the break
00:45:57He hit him twice on the break
00:45:59He asked him if it was alright
00:46:01It was twice on the break
00:46:03Well, I didn't see any bowing back
00:46:05By Jorge Julio there
00:46:07Right about now I was wondering why the point
00:46:09Hasn't gotten taken away on the other side
00:46:11I think
00:46:13Julio having a point taken away
00:46:15For flailing an elbow
00:46:17Earlier in the fight
00:46:19Although there is a clear difference
00:46:21Between an accidental low blow
00:46:23And a blatant double elbow
00:46:25Did you see what Tapia's doing here now?
00:46:27He just slipped to the center of the ring
00:46:29Almost stumbled and now he says he got hit in the cup
00:46:31But he's trying to get back into his plan
00:46:33And trying to get back to boxing
00:46:35But Julio won't let him
00:46:37He's starting to eat a few right hands
00:46:39But the pressure is catching up
00:46:41And diminishing what Tapia's able to do
00:46:45Julio has turned things around here
00:46:47Julio has turned things around here
00:46:49And he's using any trick in the book to do it
00:46:51Watch the elbow
00:46:53And this thing could be getting closer
00:46:55All the time
00:46:57Good shots being landed here
00:46:59By Julio on the inside
00:47:01Back comes Tapia with a double knock
00:47:03Upstairs and down
00:47:05And Ortega calls time
00:47:07Watch the elbows
00:47:09Cuidado con tu esto
00:47:11Okay
00:47:13Time in
00:47:15The dirty tactics continue
00:47:17Mike Ortega did a spang with his
00:47:19Cuidado con tu esto
00:47:21Beautiful jam
00:47:23Work here by Tapia
00:47:25Julio bouncing around
00:47:27Coming forward
00:47:29A beautiful twisting right hand
00:47:31By Tapia gets the crown
00:47:33Rocking at the back
00:47:35Ok
00:47:37Calma
00:47:39Calma
00:47:41Concentrate
00:47:43Concentrate
00:47:45No
00:47:53Calma
00:47:55Calma
00:47:56Calma
00:47:57Calma
00:47:58Eliezer
00:47:59Eliezer
00:48:00Te receiving
00:48:01We're going to take a look at Tapia on the inside,
00:48:07stuffing that jab and almost dropping Julio.
00:48:10Julio just ran right into it.
00:48:13Later on, Julio's coming back.
00:48:14He's applying a lot of pressure.
00:48:15This is when he's at his most effective.
00:48:17Hits Tapia with a right hand.
00:48:18Here, Tapia digs one to the body.
00:48:21But Julio doesn't stop coming.
00:48:23One goes maybe a little south of the border as Tom.
00:48:27We're going to get a look now.
00:48:28There's the elbow.
00:48:29They just bolt up.
00:48:30Oh, look at that.
00:48:31Well, what was that?
00:48:32They bolt through two blatant elbows.
00:48:33Yeah.
00:48:34What do you mean?
00:48:35It's foul-fetched.
00:48:37Julio hasn't lost in more than six years,
00:48:40but this could arguably be the toughest competition he's had yet.
00:48:44His last loss, a decision to Junior Jones, October 23rd, 1993.
00:48:49Neither one of them won this fight yet.
00:48:50This is up for grabs.
00:48:52This is a fight where the champion is coming on,
00:48:54and as Bobby says, he looks like the stronger of the two,
00:48:56even though he's been belabored by accurate shots by Tapia.
00:49:00There have been no knockdowns thus far in this fight.
00:49:04A couple of headbutts early.
00:49:06A one-point deduction for an elbow from Jorge Julio in round seven.
00:49:10That one-point deduction could be used.
00:49:12It could loom large as this fight gets closer.
00:49:15Huge because he took the round.
00:49:16I didn't get him a 10-8 round.
00:49:17That's a big, big thing.
00:49:18Beyond line, it's still a shutout.
00:49:208-0 Tapia.
00:49:23Browns 2-3-5.
00:49:24We're close to the holding shot call.
00:49:26There's a straight left hand by Julio.
00:49:28Right on the nose of Tapia.
00:49:30Well, Tapia handed a shotgun jab.
00:49:32Oh!
00:49:33That's a hook.
00:49:34There's a beautiful left hook to the head by Tapia.
00:49:36Then a straight right hand by Tapia.
00:49:38Scoring it will here in round nine.
00:49:40He is really poking the shots in.
00:49:41He really is.
00:49:42And he's dancing around.
00:49:43Target practice right now.
00:49:44And at times, he does it well back, Kermit.
00:49:48I think for the first time, I see frustration on the face of the champion.
00:49:51Another left hook by Tapia to the head of Julio.
00:49:54He's frustrated.
00:49:55He's tired of coming on and not getting in.
00:49:56Combination by Julio.
00:49:58Nice right hand from the champion.
00:50:01But these shots by Tapia are taking the steam out of Julio's punches.
00:50:07So careful jams by Tapia.
00:50:10That right hand was blocked by Tapia.
00:50:13Hey!
00:50:13Hey!
00:50:14Hold it.
00:50:17Julio looking very frustrated right now.
00:50:21Champion just can't seem to catch up to the faster, more elusive challenger, Johnny Tapia.
00:50:27Julio was right.
00:50:28Speed would be effective, but it wouldn't be in his favor.
00:50:34Tapia in tremendous condition.
00:50:36We're deep into the fight.
00:50:37Round nine.
00:50:38And he's dancing around like it's round one.
00:50:40And the champion's taking this round off.
00:50:42He hasn't been swarming like he had in the others.
00:50:44Finally.
00:50:44Oh!
00:50:45I'm going to catch him.
00:50:45Oh, look away!
00:50:46A no-look punch!
00:50:47A no-look punch by Johnny Tapia!
00:50:51He looked like Jason Kidd on that one with a no-look pass.
00:50:55That was beautiful.
00:50:56And he is a huge basketball fan, Tapia.
00:50:58Oh, nice shot.
00:51:00Tapia again with his educated left hand.
00:51:05He's beating a tattoo on the champion's face.
00:51:08He's just wearing Julio out here with about 20 seconds left at round nine.
00:51:13This is a good round for Tapia.
00:51:15Doesn't seem to be much on those Julio punches right now.
00:51:18Again, that jab has kept the champion with balance all night long, and it's become a power punch for Tapia as the champion runs into it.
00:51:26He says keep fighting!
00:51:27Well, let's see what they say in the corner if we can.
00:51:29Let's pick up the corner and see what he's complaining about.
00:51:36Okay, that's very good, JT, but I think the round's too close.
00:51:39It's too close.
00:51:40I need more combinations, okay?
00:51:41Johnny, you've got to get a little bit busier.
00:51:42Those rounds are too close out there.
00:51:43You hear me, son?
00:51:44Yes!
00:51:45Okay, three, four points!
00:51:46JT, stay focused and focus on Johnny.
00:51:47Three, four points!
00:51:48He's dying.
00:51:49Keep on the right hand.
00:51:50Yeah, well, I get it.
00:51:51He's okay.
00:51:52Then the other side, and he's right!
00:51:53Let's see what he's complaining about.
00:51:54I'm really sorry, what he's complaining about.
00:51:57You can't get the right JT!
00:51:58Okay, that's very good JT, but I think that they're round too close.
00:52:01It's too close.
00:52:02It's too close.
00:52:03I need more combinations, okay?
00:52:04Johnny, you've got to get a little bit busier.
00:52:05Those rounds are too close out there.
00:52:06You hear me, son?
00:52:07Yes!
00:52:08Okay.
00:52:09Three, four points.
00:52:10JT, stay focused on Johnny.
00:52:11JT, stay focused on Johnny.
00:52:12He's stronger than me, he just said.
00:52:18Fighters said he's stronger than me.
00:52:21You gotta lift your hands.
00:52:22You gotta move your hands.
00:52:30You gotta get tough.
00:52:31You're losing the fight.
00:52:35At the end of the round, Julio complaining.
00:52:38And I'll tell you what.
00:52:39What happened every time Tapia complained,
00:52:41Julio stepped back and let him complain.
00:52:43When the champion complained, Tapia stepped in
00:52:45and hit him well.
00:52:46Protect yourself at all time.
00:52:48Instruction number one.
00:52:51Timeout being called by the referee, Mike Ortega.
00:52:54There's no rule that says you can't hit the man
00:52:56while he's complaining.
00:52:57Tapia complained, champion did nothing.
00:52:59Champion complained, Tapia teed off on him.
00:53:02And Tapia has every right to do that.
00:53:05As long as the referee doesn't step in.
00:53:07We continue round 10 now.
00:53:16The corner seemed to think that Tapia was so finished,
00:53:19that he was tired,
00:53:19but I think the slower punches and the slower pace right now
00:53:22is being put forth by the champion.
00:53:25Julio had the right idea for a couple of rounds there.
00:53:27He was trying anything to take Tapia out of his game.
00:53:30It may have worked for a while, but Tapia is back.
00:53:33He is really back.
00:53:34Look at him now.
00:53:35He's almost toying with the champion,
00:53:37taunting him to some degree.
00:53:40See what Tapia does too is he throws a little shoulder
00:53:42plate, and what that does is freeze the champion.
00:53:45Champion stops his track,
00:53:46thinking the punch is coming,
00:53:47and Tapia can do whatever he wants.
00:53:48Tapia looks to be in his own right now.
00:53:50He is bursting with confidence.
00:53:52He looks almost as if he feels he can do anything.
00:53:55But he's got to be very careful with the strong champion.
00:54:05See, the champion's not stepping with the jab as much.
00:54:07He's throwing it out there and bringing it back to the same place
00:54:09instead of stepping with the leg and the body behind it like Tapia.
00:54:13That's why Tapia's being so much more effective with a power jab.
00:54:16He steps in behind it.
00:54:18Tapia now in total command.
00:54:20He goes to the body, then to the head.
00:54:26Julio just doesn't seem to know what to do.
00:54:28Midway through the tent.
00:54:33Julio looks dazed and confused right now.
00:54:39He certainly looks confused.
00:54:41Certainly looks confused, but I think it's a fatigue thing.
00:54:43Not so much a dazed, but a tired thing.
00:54:45He's exhausted.
00:54:48He's taken a lot of punishment here.
00:54:50That's worn him out.
00:54:52Tapia walks into a straight right, but he says it didn't hurt him.
00:54:56See how Tapia steps with that jab?
00:55:01Dancing around.
00:55:02A little slippery spot there on the ring canvas.
00:55:11And then he's left jabs being shot guard by Tapia.
00:55:14As you put it, a shotgun jab.
00:55:15And a left right.
00:55:16Johnny Tapia steps in with his punches, and Julio doesn't react well.
00:55:20The speed is too big a factor, and Julio punches from the outside and stays there.
00:55:24Tapia looks like a 25-year-old kid here.
00:55:27He looks like he's found a style that he likes from the outside, just jinking and faking with
00:55:31his shoulders and coming in when he wants to.
00:55:33Worked very well last round.
00:55:34And Julio is working very well this round.
00:55:36Boy, that shotgun jab working to perfection by Tapia.
00:55:41Julio missing left.
00:55:42Combination attack.
00:55:43Back comes a combination by Tapia.
00:55:46Look out, and away goes Tapia.
00:55:49And Julio hits nothing.
00:55:53Tapia is a picture of frustration.
00:55:56And the challenger, a picture of confidence.
00:56:00Don't do that.
00:56:00Don't do that.
00:56:03Coming up on Showtime, in exactly three weeks, we head across the Atlantic to Manchester,
00:56:09England, where Mike Tyson fights for the first time in Europe.
00:56:12The former undisputed heavyweight champion takes on British heavyweight champ Julius Francis.
00:56:17Also on the card, WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe makes his debut on American
00:56:22television as he faces number seven contender David Starry.
00:56:26That's Saturday, January 29th, 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific.
00:56:32Don't let him come with momentum.
00:56:34Side to side, keep turning him.
00:56:36Stay focused.
00:56:37You take your game plan.
00:56:37I'm getting it back, baby.
00:56:38What do you do best?
00:56:39I'm boxed.
00:56:40You boxed.
00:56:40That's what we're going to do out there, right?
00:56:41Give him a boxing lesson.
00:56:43You hear me?
00:56:44He's dead tired, okay?
00:56:45Don't forget your body shots.
00:56:47Okay?
00:56:48He's hurting out there.
00:56:48Don't forget your body shots.
00:56:49Okay?
00:56:51Good advice from Freddie Roach.
00:56:53Don't forget your body shots because Julio's hurt.
00:56:59We begin round 11.
00:57:01We enter the championship round.
00:57:03We'll see how much the champion has left him.
00:57:07Well, he looks like he really has to dig deep down.
00:57:10And Jorge Julio for these last two rounds.
00:57:14See, now he's starting to step with the champion.
00:57:16He's reaching John.
00:57:23Tapia starts out in deliberate fashion.
00:57:25Julio going down low.
00:57:26So Tapia goes low.
00:57:28He almost slipped onto his knee.
00:57:29Well, from what the corner is telling him, what Freddie's telling him, and what we see, you know, Tapia's in danger of thinking this thing's gone.
00:57:38He's got it won.
00:57:38All he's got to do is get confident and go on that to be on stake.
00:57:42I mean, this guy is still the champion.
00:57:45Tapia has to keep focused, and he has to keep thinking, hey, this is a close fight.
00:57:48I've got to go, I've got to go some.
00:57:50I don't think it's a close fight.
00:57:51But some of the mid-rounds were very close, and depending on how you viewed it, it could go the other way.
00:57:57The champion, Jorge, and he has Sarah Julio looking for a second win.
00:58:01How much does he have left?
00:58:03Oh, he just walked in to a right hand by Johnny Tapia.
00:58:06Right on the left joint.
00:58:08Last two rounds have been a boxing lesson from standing outside, feigning with his shoulders, coming in with a combination, moving away again, bending over.
00:58:16Everything you want to see in a fighter, you're seeing Tapia here.
00:58:18See, what you can see, too, here is Tapia is so quick and has been so accurate that every time he moves, the champion has to react to it.
00:58:25Big overhand right by the champion, but it didn't seem to take much out of Tapia.
00:58:29He just got to shrug it off.
00:58:30And one and done.
00:58:31He only throws one.
00:58:32But every time Tapia moves, the champion reacts, which doesn't allow him to get back in his offensive mode.
00:58:37Now, Julio picking up the tempo just a bit.
00:58:41Oh!
00:58:42Combination to the head by Julio, but Tapia's showing the chin.
00:58:46And this is what we're talking about.
00:58:47You can't get over the count.
00:58:48You start getting gotten.
00:58:49Now, he's got a great chin.
00:58:50But a lot of guys with great chins have been touched on the right button and gone down.
00:58:54So you've got to be in this fight for the very last belt.
00:58:57And normally, Julio is very strong.
00:58:59I just don't know how much he's got left here.
00:59:01How much impact those punches hit.
00:59:09Julio trying to load up, and Tapia just sips him with those jabs.
00:59:14Those pesky jabs that have taken its toll on Julio all night.
00:59:21Julio coming back with a couple of punches there, but digging left upper cuts to the body by Tapia.
00:59:27Oh, it was half the hurt.
00:59:29Tapia can dig through the body.
00:59:30Oh, beautiful.
00:59:31You see that slip?
00:59:32He slips.
00:59:32Watch his shoulder.
00:59:33He jumped on Julio right here.
00:59:34He jumped on Julio right here.
00:59:35He jumped on Julio right here.
00:59:36He jumped on Julio right here.
00:59:37And then he takes a step back to admire his work.
00:59:42That sometimes is a mistake.
00:59:44As long as you step back far enough.
00:59:46Another right hand by Tapia.
00:59:53Again, Tapia now landing at will, repeatedly.
00:59:57We're 11 rounds complete.
01:00:03You know, Tapia just tapped gloves at Julio.
01:00:07That's one thing I never understood.
01:00:08You guys are trying to beat each other to death.
01:00:10For 11 rounds, they tapped gloves and say hello.
01:00:12All three of them are in agreement that they've got to come up and get a knockout.
01:00:27They've got it.
01:00:28Don't disconcern yourself.
01:00:35Don't get frustrated.
01:00:36Stay on.
01:00:37Do not let him get momentum.
01:00:38Come on.
01:00:39Come on.
01:00:39I love you guys.
01:00:43Johnny Tapia, boxing smart from the outside.
01:00:46Throws a multiple combination.
01:00:48We talked about earlier.
01:00:49Follow-up combination.
01:00:50Near a double right hand.
01:00:51Not allowing Julio to come back to him.
01:00:53Once again, making a miss.
01:00:55Jam.
01:00:55Sticks the jab in his face.
01:00:57Gets inside, makes a miss.
01:00:58Fires.
01:00:59Six-punch combination.
01:01:01Boxing smart from the inside and the outside.
01:01:03Johnny Tapia.
01:01:04That touch, kid.
01:01:05Look, Tapia.
01:01:07Extends and in place.
01:01:09Cuts gloves again.
01:01:11Ten seconds left in the round, I think, after all that.
01:01:16Unbelievable.
01:01:18Now a little stoppage of the action.
01:01:20And finally, the referee says, let's go.
01:01:22Julio, for the record, does not have a 12th round knockout to his credit.
01:01:26And it looks like he'll need one here if he wants to return to Colombia with the belt.
01:01:33You know, they say he'll have no fury like a limb that's scorned,
01:01:35but also has no fury like a fighter with something to prove.
01:01:39Johnny Tapia putting on a great exhibition.
01:01:41He wanted to show that after losing a title, you can win one back.
01:01:45And he wants to end in a flooring.
01:01:47There have been no knockdowns.
01:01:56And the chance of Johnny from this near-sellout crowd here at the pit in Albuquerque.
01:02:02Where Tapia comes in 14-0 in his hometown.
01:02:06He won his first world title here in this very building at the pit in Albuquerque.
01:02:12And he wants to win his fourth here in just a matter of minutes.
01:02:17And keep him up, keep him up.
01:02:19Come on, come on.
01:02:19It's been a foul-clagged fight.
01:02:24But it's been won, dominated by Johnny Tapia.
01:02:29Halfway through the final round for the title.
01:02:32Tapia unloaded with the straight right hand.
01:02:34A triple straight right hand.
01:02:35He held his left hand up by his cheek,
01:02:38guarded himself with it,
01:02:39and threw him right hand, right hand, and right hand,
01:02:41almost as if to dare Julio to do something about it.
01:02:44Three straight shots.
01:02:45Well, when do you see that?
01:02:46And Julio just stood there and took it.
01:02:50Nothing to offer back.
01:02:53There's nothing in those punches by Julio.
01:02:55He is worn out, one worn out champion
01:02:57who probably has a minute left to wear the belt.
01:03:03Hello, hello, hello.
01:03:04Hello.
01:03:08Hands are free, hands are free.
01:03:10Let's go.
01:03:12Well, this crowd will start erupting
01:03:15as the final seconds tick down.
01:03:18Being urged up by Johnny Tapia.
01:03:20Keep him up, keep him up.
01:03:21That's it.
01:03:22I wouldn't want to be in the building.
01:03:24Finishing with a flourish, Johnny Tapia
01:03:27as the decibel level rises again.
01:03:33Let your hands, let your hands.
01:03:34Let your hands be out.
01:03:34Let your hands be out.
01:03:34Let's go.
01:03:35Let's go.
01:03:36Let's go.
01:03:36Let's go.
01:03:37We approach the final 20 seconds.
01:03:40Tapia playing to the crowd.
01:03:41He's actually done less playing to the crowd
01:03:45in this fight than he has done in a long time.
01:03:47And we'll see if he does one of his patented backflips
01:03:50at the end of the fight.
01:03:52Well, he's entitled to this time.
01:03:54His nose is starting to bleed a little too now.
01:03:56And that's it.
01:04:02Here it is.
01:04:03The backflip by Johnny Tapia.
01:04:05Almost missed with it, but he made it.
01:04:14It's all hugs and kisses for Johnny Tapia.
01:04:19His highly regarded trainer, Freddie Roach.
01:04:22He's got members of his family in the corner.
01:04:26Of course, his loving wife, Teresa, his manager,
01:04:29for whom he owes so much after such a turbulent life.
01:04:34And there's Jorge Julio, who ends the fight like he started it,
01:04:37chanting to the sky.
01:04:38You know what?
01:04:39He was chanting the first time.
01:04:40He was smiling a whole lot brighter than that smile.
01:04:42That was almost a kind of a perfunctory smile.
01:04:45He just phoned it in.
01:04:46What's his score, Bobby?
01:04:46I have 118 to 100.
01:04:49I have it nine rounds to two and one even.
01:04:52But the two-point round for the extra point taken off.
01:04:55I agree.
01:04:55And some of these fans got in free for turning in their guns,
01:04:59a program instituted by Johnny Tapia
01:05:01as a way of giving something back to the community.
01:05:03At last count, 57 guns dropped off to the Albuquerque police.
01:05:08Albuquerque!
01:05:09Nice thought.
01:05:09Yes.
01:05:10I love you!
01:05:11Very nicely done by Johnny Tapia trying to give back.
01:05:14I love you, Albuquerque.
01:05:16Johnny says that's six bullets each.
01:05:20If that saves one life, it's worth it.
01:05:24We're going to take a look at some replays here.
01:05:27Johnny Tapia, oh so accurate with his punches.
01:05:30All night long, snapping the head back.
01:05:32There's a lead right hand, second right hand,
01:05:35and he's just standing there, staring him off.
01:05:36A third right hand eventually came right down the pike
01:05:39and hit the champion Julio again.
01:05:42It's another angle.
01:05:43There's the right hand.
01:05:44There's another right hand snapping his head back.
01:05:46And the third right hand, which didn't really land as cleanly.
01:05:49But you should never be able to get away with that.
01:05:51That is just interesting.
01:05:54And the back flip, ever the showman, is Johnny Tapia.
01:05:57So Johnny Tapia awaits the decision.
01:06:07Honey, give me a kid, babe.
01:06:08We're about set to send it on up to Jimmy Lennon.
01:06:13And gentlemen, after 12 rounds of action, we go to the scorecards.
01:06:19The judges are in agreement.
01:06:20We have a unanimous decision.
01:06:24Judge at ringside, Manuel Maric Salar scores about 118 to 109.
01:06:31Judge Jose Rivera scores about 116 to 111.
01:06:37Judge Luis Martinez scores about 119 to 108.
01:06:42All three in favor of the winner.
01:06:44And the new WBO Bantamweight Champion of the World, Johnny Tapia.
01:06:54Well, Steve, I hit him 118, 110.
01:06:56They were all right in line.
01:06:59Decisive, unanimous decision for Johnny Tapia.
01:07:02A successful homecoming, showing the belt to his hometown fans.
01:07:09His fourth world championship.
01:07:12And he gets to do it in Albuquerque.
01:07:17He bounces back from his first defeat.
01:07:2115-1 in world title fights.
01:07:2415-0 here in Albuquerque.
01:07:28So it's going to be a night of celebration for Johnny Tapia.
01:07:38Goes to 47-1 and 2.
01:07:43Meantime, Jorge Julio deposed after three successful defenses.
01:07:47Only his second loss in 44 fights.
01:07:51The last loss to Junior Jones back in 1993.
01:07:55Let's hear more from Jim Gray.
01:07:56Jim, take it away.
01:07:57All right.
01:07:58Thank you very much, Steve.
01:08:00Johnny Tapia, congratulations to you.
01:08:02Johnny, after your loss, did you question that you might not have the fire?
01:08:07You were scared in the locker room before,
01:08:09and you had told us that a lot of great fighters can't come back after a loss.
01:08:12How concerned were you?
01:08:13Well, first of all, I'd like to give a lot of thanks and press.
01:08:15Would you do me one big favor while we're here?
01:08:17Please?
01:08:18Would you say sorry to Pete Rose?
01:08:20Please?
01:08:20It's got nothing to do with this, Johnny Tapia.
01:08:23You want to address the fight?
01:08:23First of all, I'd like to say thanks to God.
01:08:28This is the best champion in the world.
01:08:31I fought a great fight.
01:08:33I'd just like to say thank you for giving me the opportunity.
01:08:35Gracias para la altura.
01:08:36Congratulate for us, Johnny.
01:08:39I told him thank you for the opportunity that he gave me.
01:08:43He's a hell of a great champion, hard hitter,
01:08:46and I'm just happy to win the title again.
01:08:48He says he won.
01:08:48You feel you won the fight, Julio?
01:08:50I won the fight.
01:08:52I won the fight.
01:08:54I don't feel there's anything else to say.
01:08:56I feel I won.
01:08:56He said they took a point away from me that they didn't ever exist.
01:09:01He was leaning in with his head.
01:09:03But it's okay.
01:09:04He managed to do it.
01:09:05Okay, it's okay.
01:09:06It's his time.
01:09:06Would you like to fight again?
01:09:08You want to smile again?
01:09:09Yeah, he would.
01:09:10If he gives us the opportunity, of course.
01:09:16We're two great champions who meet each other.
01:09:18Okay.
01:09:18I'd like to give a lot of thanks to Frank Warren for putting me on the show.
01:09:22I couldn't have did it without him for being a promoter.
01:09:24I'd like to give a lot of thanks to Frank Warren
01:09:26and also to the state of New Mexico and also to the whole world.
01:09:29You can't keep a good man down, boss.
01:09:30Back to the original question.
01:09:32Were you concerned that you might not be able to have the fire?
01:09:35A lot of great fighters can't come back after that first loss.
01:09:38You were concerned about that, weren't you?
01:09:39I've always been down in life, and I've always been able to pick up myself.
01:09:43You know, everybody that's counting me out in life,
01:09:46all the prayers that everybody gave me brought me back
01:09:49from a tough, tough world that I've lived in.
01:09:53And I'm just very, very happy.
01:09:55What next?
01:09:57I'm going to relax.
01:09:58I didn't have a Christmas.
01:09:59Jim, I didn't have a Christmas.
01:10:00I didn't have a New Year's.
01:10:01I'm going to have one tonight.
01:10:03All right, Johnny, congratulations.
01:10:05Back to you, Steve.
01:10:06Thank you very much, Jim Gray.
01:10:08And I know a lot of people would love to see Johnny Tapia
01:10:11in a rematch with Paulie Ayala,
01:10:12but Johnny says unless he renews his promotional contract
01:10:16with promoter Bob Arum,
01:10:18he feels he'll never get, Tapia says,
01:10:20he'll never get the rematch with Paulie Ayala.
01:10:24Let's check the online scoring results from our main event.
01:10:27And there it is, a shutout for Johnny Tapia
01:10:29as far as the folks at home are concerned.
01:10:3112 rounds to nothing.
01:10:32If you took part, we thank you for your participation.
01:10:35We are back ringside.
01:10:39Steve Albert, along with the fight doctor,
01:10:41Ferdi Pacheco, will be joined again by Bobby in just a second.
01:10:44Well, Tapia has done it.
01:10:46He proves that after losing a title,
01:10:47he can come back and win.
01:10:48Now he says he wants to move up to 122 pounds.
01:10:51The big guns up there are Eric Morales
01:10:53and Marco Antonio Barrera.
01:10:55Those would be scorchers.
01:10:57They would be scorchers.
01:10:58Anybody he fights is a scorcher.
01:10:59That's the type of guy he is.
01:11:00He's explosive.
01:11:01He's there all to the time to fight.
01:11:04He is one of the premier fighters
01:11:05because he pleases the public when he fights.
01:11:08And when you got a guy like that,
01:11:09he can fight anybody.
01:11:11All right, let's turn to Bobby Chez,
01:11:14our other partner here.
01:11:15Where does Jorge Eliezer Julio,
01:11:17the former champion, go from this point on?
01:11:20Well, he's clearly still a great fighter
01:11:22and a terrific former champion.
01:11:23He has ability.
01:11:24He has skills.
01:11:25He's not too old to continue.
01:11:27Either goes after another title or maybe,
01:11:28just maybe, he moves up to 122
01:11:30and he sees Tapia again
01:11:32at a later date for a different title.
01:11:33Now, you may have gone into this fight
01:11:36thinking that Johnny Tapia would win.
01:11:38You know, he's got the home crowd advantage
01:11:40and maybe because of his skill level
01:11:42better than Jorge Eliezer Julio.
01:11:45Did you think he would win this convincingly?
01:11:47I thought he would win similarly to what we had here.
01:11:49I thought it might be a little closer.
01:11:51Julio started to close the gap.
01:11:52He started to shut the distance down
01:11:54and not give Johnny boxing room
01:11:55and use his strength on the inside
01:11:57and wear Johnny down a little bit in the middle rounds.
01:11:59But he got away from me.
01:12:00It's a very tiring pace,
01:12:01very physical thing to do,
01:12:03hard to do,
01:12:04and he couldn't keep it up.
01:12:05But I thought that it would be similar to this,
01:12:07not quite as one-sided.
01:12:08Now, there are a lot of options out there
01:12:10as far as Johnny Tapia is concerned.
01:12:13A fight perhaps again with Pauli Ayala,
01:12:15but he says that won't happen
01:12:16unless he renews with Bob Arum.
01:12:18He could move up to 122
01:12:20and go after Barrera or Morales.
01:12:22What do you think is going to happen?
01:12:24You're looking into your crystal ball.
01:12:25Well, my crystal ball just says
01:12:27Johnny Tapia's going to move up.
01:12:28I think he's totally finished starving himself
01:12:30and draining himself of fluids to make 118.
01:12:32I think 122 is going to be a lot safer for him,
01:12:35health-wise, a lot more comfortable for him.
01:12:36But they punch a little harder up there,
01:12:38but he still maintains.
01:12:39If he can bring that speed up with him,
01:12:41he's always going to be a big factor.
01:12:42And his follow-up combination,
01:12:44something he does better than most fighters I've ever seen,
01:12:46he'll throw five or six punches
01:12:47and throw five or six more
01:12:48before you have a chance to set
01:12:50or reset or react to them.
01:12:52And that's a Johnny Tapia key to victory in all fights.
01:12:54All right, let me turn to my right again
01:12:56for our other partner here,
01:12:57a little broadcast ping-pong.
01:12:59The fight, Dr. Ferdinand Pacheco,
01:13:00what do you think was the key to victory for Tapia tonight?
01:13:04The fact that he stayed cool, he composed himself?
01:13:06I think his relentless pace,
01:13:08the fact that he didn't lose his temper
01:13:10and get into one of those ugly shootouts that he gets into,
01:13:13and the fact that he had a plan.
01:13:15He stuck to it.
01:13:16It was working for him.
01:13:17The other guy started coming on.
01:13:18He goes right back to boxing beautifully,
01:13:20takes the guts right out of him
01:13:22because that end, last four or five rounds
01:13:24where he boxed from outside,
01:13:26that took the guts right out of the champion.
01:13:27He couldn't do anything.
01:13:29So I felt that Tapia did what he started out to do,
01:13:33and that is good enough to get him the championship.
01:13:36All right, Ferdinand, right now let's close things out.
01:13:39We take a look at our highlights of both fights
01:13:41that you saw here from the pit in Albuquerque.
01:13:43Doc, we begin with both of Pinnell,
01:13:45and it didn't last very long.
01:13:47Well, we begin and end in a few seconds
01:13:50because this was nothing of an opponent for this guy,
01:13:53and he just took him apart like what he is, a victim.
01:13:57A knockout for the former IBF heavyweight champion
01:14:00against a professional opponent,
01:14:02a journeyman by the name of Steve Pinnell.
01:14:04This was easy pickings for Francois Botha.
01:14:08And in our main event we just saw,
01:14:15it brought the house down for Johnny Tapia.
01:14:18Johnny Tapia wanted to make a statement,
01:14:19and he said he had a box smart,
01:14:21not just from the inside, but from the outside.
01:14:23He worked both sides of the fence.
01:14:24Southpaw, he worked righty.
01:14:27He worked better as a righty against a southpaw
01:14:29because the champion also switched.
01:14:31There were some dirty tactics
01:14:32which were not nice for either of the fighters,
01:14:34but Johnny Tapia made a statement.
01:14:35Very accurate, very, very working-like,
01:14:39and he got the job done, Steve.
01:14:41Yes, he did.
01:14:42As we take a look at a final recap of the results,
01:14:45Francois Botha adding a W to his ring record
01:14:47by beating journeyman fighter Steve Pinnell,
01:14:50a first-round knockout.
01:14:51And to the main event, hometown favorite Johnny Tapia
01:14:54sent the fans home happy,
01:14:56able to rebound from his first career loss
01:14:58to become a world champion once again.
