Transcript
00:01All right let's check the online
00:03scoring results from our last
00:05bout there it is a shutout by the
00:07fans at home in favor of Olympic
00:10silver medalist and now
00:11professional Rocky Juarez if you
00:13took part thanks for your
00:14participation the online voting
00:15will continue with the start of
00:17our next fight and next on the
00:20card the power hitting 17 year
00:22old Juan Diaz putting his
00:24aggressive style on display in a
00:26scheduled six round junior
00:27welterweight bout against Brad
00:28Jensen now the fact that Diaz
00:31didn't compete in the Olympics had
00:32nothing to do with his skills it had
00:34only to do with his age I think the
00:39reason I didn't go to the Olympics
00:40was because I was 16 years old I was
00:43too young you have to be 17 to go to
00:45the Olympics but I tried out for the
00:48Mexican Olympic team and I made the
00:50team but the United States and Puerto
00:52Rico protested so the next thing I
00:55did was just some pro I had to fight
00:58in Mexico because here in the United
01:00States it wouldn't let me turn pro I
01:02had three fights down in Mexico and
01:05all three of them stopped the guy in
01:08the first round once I turned 17 I made
01:11my USA pro debut in my hometown Houston
01:16Texas and that's when my pro career
01:19started here in the United States my
01:21idol since I was a little kid has been
01:23Julio Cesar Chavez I like his style
01:26how he fights and that's how I started
01:29fighting what I hope for in my boxing
01:32career is to become one of the world
01:34the one of the world's best Mexican
01:36champions how young is he had to walk
01:41around the casino to get to the arena
01:44because he's too young to walk through
01:46the casino but here he is 17 year young
01:50Juan Diaz out of Houston Texas unbeaten
01:53in six starts five knockouts killed
01:55his first five turned pro at 16 back
01:59to June here he comes crowd seeing him
02:02for the first time here too young to
02:09fight pro here in the US so he fought
02:11his first three bouts in Mexico he's
02:13got dual citizenship his parents are
02:16from south of the border the irony
02:19over that age thing is Diaz would have
02:21made it to 17 by the time the Sydney
02:24Olympics began but he was held back by
02:26politics very much the crowd things are
02:29exciting and Bobby from watching tapes of
02:32Diaz still kind of a work in progress of
02:35course at that age he seems to have the
02:37right temperament though and attitude as
02:39his skills develop you know bringing a
02:41young fighter along Steve it's almost like
02:43having a diamond in the rough you cut a
02:45diamond poorly what'll happen is you'll
02:47destroy a priceless thing here's a kid
02:49who's got all the talent all the skills
02:50started very early for a lot of different
02:52reasons now they bring him along and
02:54bring him along just right and he could be
02:55one of tomorrow's superstars he's from a
02:58very talented family his kid brother jose
03:01turns 15 tomorrow he's 93 and 10 as an
03:04amateur hopes to fight at the next summer
03:06Olympics at 119 pounds Juan Diaz is in the
03:10140 pound range a junior well-to-weight
03:13getting ready for his sixth rounder
03:16against Brad Jensen and here he is
03:22former kickboxer tough man and bare
03:25knuckles fighter Brad Jensen product of
03:27the Denver area seven and one four of
03:30his wins by knockout lost his last fight
03:32on points an apprentice plumber married
03:35father of two discovered at a bare
03:36knuckles fight at a bar in Wyoming and
03:39as you might expect Bobby he is an
03:41aggressive offensive-minded guy who
03:43lets it rip this could be a bit wild
03:45well Steve as I always joke about getting
03:47that pound of flesh for respect then
03:49I'll get that pound of flesh for
03:50respect but if you get enough of those
03:52pounds of flesh you could actually win
03:54the fight this kid here he's got a good
03:56chin he relies on it the brawling style
03:58seems to suit him he'd rather be in it
04:00a good fight and a most interesting
04:03tattoo wouldn't you say it's
04:06different let's check the numbers as
04:09we go to the tail of the tape
04:11thinking of getting one myself a
04:1217 year old Diaz nine years younger
04:14than Jensen Diaz five inches
04:16shorter Jensen with the four inch
04:19reach advantage that yesterday's
04:20way in Diaz 140 and a half Jensen
04:23140 he rules for this fight the
04:28standing eight count is in effect so
04:29the three knockdown rule a fighter
04:31cannot be saved by the bell in any
04:32round if an accidental headbutt
04:35occurs before the end of the third
04:36round it's a technical draw if it
04:38happens after the end of round three
04:40they go to the scorecard so here at
04:42the youngest pavilion getting ready
04:43for one Diaz versus Brad Jensen

05:54at seven wins one loss with four of his
05:57wins coming by way of knockout they call
06:00him bad to the bones Brad Jensen
06:08and his opponent across the ring he is
06:11ready to fight on my ride to the red
06:13corner wearing blue trunks he is fighting
06:16out of Houston Texas by way of Guerrero
06:20Mexico his weight 140 and one half pounds
06:24he is undefeated in his campaign to the
06:27the red ring with six wins no losses five
06:30of his wins coming by way of knockout
06:32introducing the undefeated Juan Diaz
06:40once again it's Ed Cotton our referee in
06:43charge now to give instructions six
06:45rounds of boxing schedule
06:48all right boxers you receive the
06:50instructions in the dressing room
06:51protect yourself at all times obey my
06:54commands let's touch those I expect a
06:55good clean fight
06:58there he is Juan Diaz a very aggressive
07:03fighter goes immediately on the
07:05offensive although he told us yesterday
07:07looking to be more deliberate
07:10in the first round and the book on
07:14Jensen very tough good right hand
07:17solid chin none of his four KOs have
07:19occurred in the first round three of
07:21those KOs in three rounds or less
07:25Diaz last fight the December 1st went
07:27to the scorecards a six round decision
07:31his only fight that wasn't a knockout
07:33you won't see many jabs from Diaz he
07:35likes to throw hard lefts and right
07:37hooks usually outside hooks to the
07:39body
07:40true to the form Steve he is coming in
07:42fast yeah and he told us although
07:45he's been a fast starter to date he
07:47wanted to slow down his pace don't
07:48waste energy look for more rounds but
07:50he's digging in nice left hook to the
07:52body showing there he's leading with it
07:53maybe a little anxious a little sloppy
07:56because a real good veteran would drop a
07:58right hand right on his chin
08:02here comes Jensen trying to press the
08:05attack Diaz covering up and spins out
08:08of the corner what's the old boxing
08:10action don't hook with a hooker what's
08:12what's the best way to neutralize a hook
08:14well the best way to neutralize the hook
08:16is a straight right hand or a straight
08:17left hand the fastest between two
08:19points straight line pick him up all right
08:21quickest way to get there straight line
08:22Juan Diaz being cautioned momentarily by
08:25Ed Cotton keeping the punches up
08:31the left hook to the head by Diaz
08:35Jensen said he's got a good chin he
08:36likes to depend on that when he has to
08:38get it there and mix it up and it's been
08:39tested early punch out punch out
08:44getting that left hook is scoring off the
08:46top of the head again there's a right hand
08:48off the top of Jensen's head now and a straight
08:52left hand that pushes Jensen back
08:57oh these are really heavy body shots by Diaz
09:01you can see Diaz is clearly better of the
09:03punches here what Jensen needs to do is use that
09:07range stuff that jab from a distance and throw the
09:09straight right hand get there quicker with the
09:10straight punches
09:13Jensen said he planned to neutralize Diaz aggressive
09:15style feeling him out in the first round box
09:17him jab back him up cut off the ring use his legs
09:20stick and move
09:23that's all good on paper but once you get in front
09:25of the guy boy that can change yeah the practical
09:27application of certain strategies is just not even
09:29near as easy as you draw it up especially against a young stud
09:35like Diaz
09:38digging shots to the liver by Juan Diaz
09:44then he comes through with a straight left hand that scores
09:47a jumping straight left by Diaz follows it up with the right off the top of the
09:50head you can see when that left hook to the body lands
09:54by Diaz there is some pain in Jensen's face like there
09:59more pain
10:02well he's got everything behind those left hands to the
10:05midsection Diaz and the powder blue trunks
10:13final seconds round one scheduled for six these are 140 pounders
10:18junior welders
10:28good job round one in the book
10:34how you feel huh yeah okay look listen give me a deep breath all right
10:39and look just relax yourself okay you're trying too hard
10:42and look use the jab use the jab all right you're not using the jab at all okay you're just
10:49walking in trying to hit him with body stuff okay and look
10:53you're pushing the jab take a look at some of that body work
11:00Diaz comes in not a lot of jams like you talked about Steve but he will get up under and
11:04dig that
11:04left hook in there's another one now he comes up top to the head
11:11second look coming in again there's the left hook different body work because he just he
11:17he literally is almost zeroing in on the body alone
11:20more punches to the body than to the head
11:24there's a leaping left hand half a hook half a straight jab that that's uh it's a little
11:30over aggressive a little anxious uh piece of the amateur stuff so maybe left over
11:34as we enter into round two scheduled for six ronnie shields former fighter in the year of juan diaz
11:48was a terrific contender not long ago willie savannah his manager and also in the corner
11:54the veteran joe souza his company so far all the young fighters have taken some very
12:00good opponents uh the pro debuts did not take walkovers this fight for here for diaz even though
12:05it's only a seven fight not a walkover admirable and i tip my hat to all the young men
12:21i'll tell you what this jensen is game he's going for it he's standing right in front of juan diaz
12:26and he knows those punches really sting and he's taking it and i've said it before there's a
12:32significant difference between tough and good good is your ability to give a whooping tough is your
12:36ability to take jensen were as good as he is tough he might be something discovered at a
12:44bar in wyoming in one of these wild and wacky bare knuckles contests that's something that you
12:51managed to avoid uh i've had a few bare knuckles but it wasn't you know it wasn't uh
12:56not sport it wasn't for sport it was for personal well we won't get into that the family show
13:04jensen believe it or not has never been down in his eight pro fights you would think with that
13:08wide open style he would have tasted the canvas at least once and here pulling it on is new
13:15well he said he has a pretty good chin so far he's shown it and he's taking some good body
13:19shots
13:19as well look at this triple quadruple left he's really loading up with that left hand he has and
13:27goes downstairs to the body with a ferocious shot left and right it's all over jensen those were
13:33some incredible shots taken very flushed by jensen he does have a good chin and d
13:37stop right stop right good job keep him up well he is sucking it up brad jensen he's taking some
13:43very
13:43very stiff explosive punches
13:57again diaz with that straight right stop off the midsection less than 30 seconds left in round two
14:09maybe diaz getting a little tired now he's throwing a lot of punches a lot of big heavy punches
14:14could be punching himself off early as he's hanging on the jensen now trying to regroup
14:22and grab a second wind as we head for the bell round two
14:36all right give me a deep breath all right give me a deep breath now look now just i'm out
14:41of
14:41town okay the guy is right there for you there okay okay give me a speed bucket give me a
14:47deep breath
14:47you watch here diaz he comes he gets his he gets that shot to the body goes right up top
14:55to the head
14:56once he does that what does he do comes around with the right hand and back again with the left
15:00hook
15:00very good mixing it up body and head there's the body shot then he comes up to the head takes
15:05the
15:05other side goes right back inside with the left hook up top there he misses one mixing it up beautifully
15:10though maybe a little too wide a little too many hooks on one side okay very nice i'm on both
15:15hands i'm
15:16on both hands to the body and finish up with this with all the hand on the top okay okay
15:20all right okay
15:21give me a deep breath get the knees bent on that side baby don't bag out don't kick
15:33you have to keep remembering that diaz is only 17 it's hard to believe puerto rican great wilfred
15:39benitez was 17 when he won the title and he didn't just he didn't just win the world title he
15:46beat the guy
15:46that's the name antonio cervantes he was an outstanding fighter so he did it up against
15:52some tremendous opposition juan diaz just 17.
16:01i'm gonna hand for free tell you what about this brad gents he's got some heart he's got he's got
16:07to be in
16:07very good shape with the punishment he's been absorbing he's real tough steven i do believe
16:12he's trained to give this is all he mentioned that in the interviews listen i have a shot here
16:17that many people may never receive in life i'm gonna make the most of it he does have a good
16:22chin
16:23you'd better have a good chin if you're a bare knuckles fighter you know if you think about 17
16:27years old you're still in high school magic going to high school with a world championship
16:30he seems just uh well you wear that belt to class every day and now look at these left hands
16:37missing
16:38with that whizzing left and he continues to score now with the left hand finally falls over the right
16:44but he is left hand happy he really is unloading that left hand he's almost exclusively going to the
16:48body inside with both hands once in a while he comes up top and he caught crisp left hook
16:53hands on the chin jensen good with it no real effects here comes jensen out of the body but
16:59having no effect as uh he has wisely like a seasoned veteran able to swing out of trouble
17:06and now he sends jensen back again with the jet followed up by an overhand rope that connects
17:14these are vicious shots that have to be wearing down jensen
17:22what does it go to the body hard and the head will fall if you kill the body the head
17:27usually dies
17:28right behind you final minute of round three scheduled for six junior well-to-wakes 140 pounders
17:36diaz is a bit frustrated right now wondering what's holding jensen up good job
17:47get him up get up get up get up get up getting eaten up easily by diaz i mentioned before
17:56with
17:57bojaro and juarez that these young fighters are going to the body consistently not getting excited
18:02head hunting this early in the career is two debuts and six fights in seven fights in outstanding and that
18:08is more of the professional style as opposed to the amateur jensen pushing diaz back just momentarily
18:14diaz is so strong was five six 140 and a half he's like a fire plug a little bit on
18:21the soft side
18:22you know he seems to be a little bit soft and a little bit loose and i can't tell if
18:26that's just
18:26diet or just his body or maybe there's a training thing that's not been put in play but his conditioning
18:32seems extra good time good job now listen go to your jab now okay your jab is working for you
18:53now
18:54but you got to relax yourself all right relax yourself and use that double jab the snap on
18:58double jab all right and then look throw the right hand on the body come at the hook sometime when
19:03you're on the outside step with the roll and through the hook because it's right there okay when you
19:07get inside start shooting some uppercuts at the guy now bend your knees get down and then shoot
19:12them uppercuts and then go body body and then come back up to the top and then finish off with
19:16the uppercut
19:16okay okay now remember on the outside use the jab keep pushing it fast
19:23working the body and then coming up to the head left hook underneath he stays with that left hook
19:29and then brings that left hook that was the best punch of the round if not the fight for diaz
19:34and
19:34to his credit a chance that does not want to go anywhere he is getting an earful from his trainer
19:41ronnie shields who told him it's just a matter of time he said go to the jab or snap that
19:47jab
19:48a couple times you saw him last round he snapped that jab by itself and got jensen's head up and
19:52he didn't use the right hand or the left hook behind it but that jab will not only work him
19:55in
19:56past the height and reach difference but get him inside cleanly giving the leverage to really
20:00unload with those power shots and he told him attack the body with the hook which has been quite
20:04successful and finish up with the uppercut we'll see if he uh and here's to that advice let's go stop
20:10on stop on you nice job keep him up for me beautiful duck under defensive move there by diaz
20:20missing that right cross by jensen there you see him using a shotgun jam see him stuff that jab power
20:26jab
20:30very effective punch as he pushes jensen back and makes him rethink his plan
20:38here's a beautiful dicky body shot by diaz eddie cotton may have thought it was a little low
20:43though i think one of them got a little south of the border but all right let's go
20:48belt line looked like it could have been in play he's had a few cautions
20:53in the midway point of round four
20:58here's the jab by diaz
21:02setting up the right right off the head
21:07to his credit you can see jensen several times looking to slip that left hook encounter with his
21:11own he just doesn't have quite the same skills tutelage that has uh that diaz has and he's trying
21:17you see him trying but just not getting it done
21:34telegraph that right hand diaz is never going to get hit with that you can see it coming a mile
21:38away
21:42less than a minute remaining round four scheduled for get out get out get out as soon as diaz bends
21:47his legs and starts to spring in you can see jensen just go with his hands right down to his
21:53waist he
21:53knew he's going to get hit there good job by diaz to block those punches with his arms and elbows
22:00he nails jensen on the head with a right follow by a left and that staggered jensen momentarily but
22:11this kid has some resolve and will he doesn't give up he's coming forward yeah he's coming forward
22:16steven throwing two punches he's certainly gonna at least get the respect of diaz because he's getting
22:23his pound of flesh in his own his money's worth all right stop one stop but he's not hurting diaz
22:32final seconds round four
22:36there's the bell
22:37i think uh jensen at least getting the respect of diaz by hanging in there you see how the jab
22:46is
22:46working for you now the jab is working perfect for you okay now look when you get in the inside
22:51you're tearing yourself push him around you're not a boxer you're a brawler you win fights on courage
22:55and on bulls and the way you brawl now troll some punches when you're in there let that right come
23:02all right look at me slow deep breath it is time now for an audio version of inside the ropes
23:34i'll tell you what bobby those sounds hurt i'll tell you what sometimes the sound
23:38is more than the punch but those punches were digging in well those were the sounds of fury
23:44from the fists of juan diaz six and oh five knockouts won three national silver titles three national
23:52pal titles two mexican youth titles also won the junior world championships the mexican open national
23:59title which earned him a place almost on the mexican elite team if not for the fact he was too
24:06young
24:06jensen just walked into a big right hand by diaz and his credit just shook it off diaz almost
24:12unbeatable as an amateur 105 points incredible record a wealth of experience and he brings it in when he
24:20turns pro and a lot of people are immediately at a big disadvantage again those left followed by a
24:26right hand oh jensen lost his balance we are into round five this is scheduled for six
24:34he has six and oh five knockouts jensen seven and one four ko you know it's funny if you listen
24:40in
24:40the corner jensen's trainer and colorful language expressed his opinion about what he needs to do
24:45this is not a tough man contest he needs to learn how to box this type of play jim smith
24:53discovered jesson in that wyoming bar as diaz lets it fly again now resets
25:03diaz looking very relaxed
25:11almost like yes he's done this before
25:15you see there's not a lot for him to worry about too jensen not a big punch he's mostly
25:18arms and slaps so when he's ready to rest he can rest there's no fear there's nothing to worry
25:23about no concerns when jensen face a guy who can bang well it might be a little different
25:29well bobby when you're a fighter and you realize that the guy has thrown everything he can throw
25:34and it hasn't hurt you i would say that would give you confidence get out get out get out i
25:39guess
25:39you could say would give you a certain amount of confidence confidence that you can survive maybe but
25:42not necessarily confidence that you can win
25:47it's like keep him up for the cause keep him up
25:56just for the record jensen hasn't been hit with everything he has has been hit with everything
26:07yes yes yes you think if diaz took off some of that weight that's softlessly you see
26:18obviously got to make him slicker and faster uh i would think so and maybe drop him away class which
26:23make his power increase potential maybe people like to call that uh baby fat but i'm not sure
26:30he's totally a baby at 17. i guess that's all rubble compared to us yes he's a baby
26:45you're in this all right look at me look at me last round look at me last round you gotta
26:54hang
26:54tough you gotta hang tough you gotta keep this hand up keeping his face but after it's out bring
27:00it back high keep this hand high and keep it that way last round all right and watch that more
27:05one thank you i want you to go back to the energy for me on this on this guy but
27:08i want hands moving
27:08i want body shots i want body shots with both hands not just with the left hand all right
27:12make sure you can punch on both sides all right and then finish off with the uppercut okay
27:17finish off with the uppercut for me give me a deep breath okay okay okay i want both hands moving
27:23now you're giving me one hand i don't want one hand i want two hands moving i want that right
27:26hand
27:26going straight all right everybody here straight really good instructions from ronnie shields
27:43as a touch gloves for the sixth and final round i'm sure he might keep on the reason maybe it's
27:50not
27:50a shadow of a doubt that diaz wants to knock out here but jensen i'm also sure it wants to
27:55stay here
27:56and diaz comes out in very uh frenetic fashion trying to end it here in the final round he doesn't
28:03want another decision like the last fight he won his first five by ko and then a decision
28:30he has stayed to the body more than any fighter i've seen
28:37in recent memory throughout the sixth round the baby bull juan diaz and showing some defense
28:45some elusiveness there with a good footwork as he backpedaled juan diaz
28:53the bright combination to the head by diaz followed by a left uppercut to the jaw
28:59he is now on either side not only resting a little bit and moving slipping what he's trying to do
29:04to hear is as jensen going forward he's trying to time you see a couple of those uppercuts really
29:08meant they have bad intentions they really meant him some bomb trying to load up with a few shots to
29:12maybe get him out of here hurt him i wonder how long you keep this type of pace big right
29:17hand he
29:18rocked him with the left hook diaz but he wants to put him down another right hand this kid jensen
29:23is a
29:23rock hard head i bet you're gonna have a headache i'll agree with that but he continues to come
29:32forward he is very very good good job final minute of the final round diaz really issuing a lot of
29:42punishment here i'll tell you what he has some character he has some grit but uh i don't know that
29:48he would want to do this too often throughout his life he probably he's probably saying to himself
29:52i wish i could take the gloves off that would be interesting
30:03diaz resets just jumps into jensen as this round closes out i guarantee you that there's going to be
30:11a not just a badge of honor for jensen but it's going to mean a lot to finish this fight
30:15on his feet
30:15against a guy who's titled to be one of tomorrow's superstars credit to him as well for what it's
30:20worth a moral victory left uppercut to the chin by dia continues to pretty much score at will
30:29and he looks like he's very fresh as well diaz good condition he's throwing a lot of punches here in
30:48this fight there you have it the guys couldn't put him down but there's no question who won the fight
30:54no that is one tough kid i tip my hat to him because it takes an awful lot to get
31:01hit that
31:01down but regularly round after round and keep coming out there and fight back he didn't just
31:05take the punches and fought back admirable and as you pointed out he's going to feel it later
31:17he may have a headache and a stomachache courtesy of this young man 17 year old juan diaz being hugged
31:22by uh promoter gary shaw i'll tell you what they better watch out when you're 18 yeah said you better
31:30watch out when you're 18 they better watch out just 17 looking to make it seven and oh
31:44juan diaz while nearly unbeatable as an amateur with 105 wins looks like he's going to continue his
31:50winning ways as a professional as well one of those hot young prospects to keep an eye on at 140
31:56pounds try this stuff so i can get some pictures from quick seemed destined for the olympics but was
32:03three months too young to compete so instead of seeking the gold he went for the green turn pro in
32:07june of 2000 at the ripe old age of 16. started out fighting in mexico because he was too young
32:15to fight in
32:15the u.s it was all juan diaz he really unloaded here he was hitting jensen with everything there's
32:24the body shot and you can see the wincing and pain also came up top with a few big shots
32:29there's another
32:30body shot right hand in the temple and the left hook to the jaw rocking i'm literally from pillar to
32:35post he hit with everything he had uppercuts on the inside hooks right hands overhand rights
32:40and you know what to his credit jensen staggered a while with a little bit but never in serious
32:45trouble let's go guys let's go there's another look at it on the way in staying again to that
32:50body that left hook and you see the winds of pain in jensen's face there's that hook on the inside
32:54another one to the ear jensen a tough tough customer oh yeah
33:04there's another right hand over the top of me on top of the head on top of the ear chin
33:09the jaw
33:09that's it he gave him a working over got it diaz gave him a whooping he walloped him
33:16and we're set for the official decision from our ring announcer jimmy lennon jr
33:21ladies and gentlemen after six rounds of action here at mohegan sun
33:25we go to the scorecards and we have a unanimous decision all three judges score them out the
33:31same 60 to 54 all three in favor of the winner and still undefeated juan diaz
33:43and there it is juan diaz upping his record to seven and oh still with the five knockouts
33:53and good show of sportsmanship here one quick got it coming up next it is our main event

34:22but in a major surprise and let down failed to earn a berth of the 96 u.s olympic team
34:28he was upset by
34:30a fighter named david diaz in the finals of the olympic trials tough to deal with at the time but
34:34he has
34:35certainly moved forward to the world successfully right into the bottom right into the bottom
