00:00Coming up next from the great outdoors here at Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
00:04Is it an upset in waiting?
00:06Our main event, former world champion number two rated Juan Manuel Marquez
00:09will go up against the relatively unknown but dangerous
00:12Churczak Jandang of Thailand for the WBO interim featherweight championship.
00:20Well, in some ways, Juan Manuel Marquez has been the forgotten Mexican champion of this generation.
00:25Manny Pacquiao has knocked out both of today's Mexican superstars,
00:30Marco Antonio Barrera and Eric Morales, but Marquez held Pacquiao to a draw.
00:35Partly because he never fought Pacquiao again and never fought Barrera or Morales at all,
00:40Marquez has been largely overlooked.
00:42If he loses tonight, he runs the risk of being totally forgotten.
00:48And then there's Churczak Jandang.
00:50If you're unfamiliar with this southpaw from Thailand,
00:53well, all you need to know about his style is revealed by his nickname, Pitbull.
00:57He's fought in America twice, going one and one,
01:00and he is very confident, saying Marquez looks, quote, old and sloppy, end quote.
01:05With Churczak Jandang's style, we're likely to find out tonight just how much Marquez has left.
01:11Well, Al, what do you think?
01:14Can Marquez afford back-to-back losses at this stage of his career?
01:18Normally, I don't know if I'd answer so definitively,
01:20but in this case, I will absolutely say definitely no is the answer to that
01:24because he will turn 33 later this month.
01:27And the fact of the matter is, even though he says he feels like he's 20 years of age,
01:32I think his boxing biological clock is definitely ticking.
01:36Now, to add to the urgency of this, he's facing yet another southpaw.
01:40He's had some trouble with them in the past.
01:42His first attempt at a title, he lost to Freddie Norwood.
01:45He had to draw with Pacquiao.
01:46But in that Pacquiao fight for the last eight rounds,
01:48he figured out the way to fight a lefty.
01:51And that is what he'll have to do tonight, get the best part of that performance.
01:55And one of those things he did well was to move his head,
02:04not be a target for the left hand.
02:07The jab works for Marquez, even against lefties.
02:10And it sets up what is a very damaging right hand,
02:14one that produces knockdowns.
02:18A textbook example is in his fight against Victor Polo,
02:21where the jab created the opening for an overhand right,
02:26which Marquez is able to deliver either straight or wide,
02:29depending on what is needed.
02:32And this punch has lots of power.
02:40Jandang is an excellent body puncher,
02:43and that helps set up his attack to the head.
02:45He has a tendency to lower his hands,
02:47especially his left when he gets to the body.
02:49That would be costly.
02:50Marquez has been hit and hurt by southpaws throwing a left hand,
02:55and Jandang has a good one.
02:58This exchange of jabs set the stage for a Jandang left.
03:06And when this one staggered his foe,
03:11he did what he'll need to do tonight.
03:13And that has continued throwing this punch,
03:17because this could be his ticket to a victory against Marquez.
03:22So, a lot of emotion.
03:39There's so much on the line for Marquez,
03:41and the extremely confident and hungry Jandang,
03:44really out to make a name for himself at the expense of Marquez.
03:48Here is the three-year pro,
03:49Terzak Jandang, who shares a common passion with Roy Jones.
03:53Cockfighting.
03:54This is a very rough guy.
03:56The son of a farmer-slash-boxing trainer.
03:59Impressive on paper, but somewhat questionable,
04:02having fought almost exclusively in Thailand.
04:04His only loss after an 18-0 start to former 122-pound champ,
04:10Joan Guzman, yet he is full of bravado,
04:13saying Marquez isn't as strong as Guzman,
04:16and he'll have no problem knocking Marquez out.
04:18Now, pretty cocky guy for a far less experienced man
04:22who's never been in a world title fight.
04:23He does not lack for confidence,
04:25and that's especially considering that here in the United States,
04:28he's had his issues.
04:29The loss to Guzman, which you referred to,
04:31a split decision win over Carlos Contreras, a fighter,
04:35he should have probably handled a lot easier than that,
04:37so he has to prove that he can be a road warrior
04:40here in the United States.
04:41Very typical of Thai fighters.
04:43He's quick, he's strong, really loves the body attack,
04:46and he has no fear,
04:48saying he'll face anyone, including Manny Pacquiao.
04:51But he feels very, very prepared,
04:55fully fit mentally and physically,
04:56well acclimated,
04:58having trained under the watchful eye
05:00of American trainer Bobby Villiver
05:02over the last month in nearby Las Vegas.
05:08So, some of his fans on hand,
05:10turns up, Shandang,
05:12not exactly a household name,
05:13but trying to become one starting tonight.
05:29Well, he's got his fans.
05:32It's been an exciting era for Mexican fighters,
05:36and Juan Manuel Barquez,
05:38highly decorated in a generation of celebrated Mexican champions,
05:43but there have been issues,
05:45missed opportunities,
05:47and inability to capitalize on the great
05:50comeback versus Pacquiao,
05:54and more recently,
05:55the unexpected loss to Chris John,
05:57albeit controversial.
05:59This is a guy who desperately needs to win tonight
06:02and win impressively, Alan.
06:04And if he can do that,
06:05he will have a shot at his world title
06:06and maybe even have a world title in his hip pocket.
06:09He has long been considered, as you pointed out,
06:12one of the best of the featherweights,
06:13and in the twilight of his career,
06:15he wants to drive that point home.
06:19A 13-year pro has won 44 of his 48 fights
06:23with 33 knockouts,
06:25highly skilled boxer,
06:26obviously also willing to brawl,
06:28as illustrated by his memorable fight
06:29with Pacquiao in 2004.
06:33I should point out,
06:34this is an interim title fight
06:36because WBO champ Scott Harrison
06:38scheduled a defense back in May
06:39was canceled
06:40after he was arrested
06:42in a nightclub incident
06:43in his native Scotland.
06:44Harrison entered an alcohol rehab clinic
06:46and hopes to return to the ring in November
06:49against tonight's winner
06:50who becomes the manager.
06:53All right, let's size him up now
06:54as we take a look at the tale of the tape.
06:56Marquez closing in on 33 later this month,
07:01almost eight years older than Shandang.
07:03The height is even,
07:03but Marquez with the three-inch reach advantage
07:05and at yesterday's way,
07:07and Marquez under at 124.5,
07:10and the same for Shandang at 125.
07:12And the key unified rules for this fight,
07:16there is no standing eight count,
07:17no three knockdown rule.
07:18A fighter can't be saved by the bell in any round.
07:21If an accidental headbutt
07:22causes a fight to end within four rounds,
07:24it's a no decision.
07:25After four,
07:26they go to the cards.
07:27If a punch causes a cut
07:28and the injured fighter can't continue,
07:30he loses by TKO.
07:36So here at Mont Blue Resort and Casino

10:42Distrito Federal,
10:44Mexico.
10:46He weighed in at a trim and ready,
10:48124 and one half pounds,
10:51with a record of 44 wins,
10:53three losses and one draw.
10:55He has 33 wins coming by way of knockout.
10:58Currently ranked the WBO number two world contender.
11:02Ladies and gentlemen,
11:03here is the former
11:04WBA and IBF Unified Featherweight Champion of the World,
11:10introducing
11:10Hwang Manwe Mankin!
11:20Once again,
11:21we are free in charge.
11:22Jay and Navy now give instructions.
11:24Obey my commands.
11:31Good luck.
11:32Touch close.
11:35Let's go to work.
11:36Well, the excitement meter definitely rises
11:43when Marquez faces an aggressive opponent
11:46and Jandang is not shy.
11:48Marquez, an Americanized Mexican fighter,
11:51historically a non-aggressive counterpuncher,
11:53a notoriously slow starter.
11:56Jandang,
11:57will he come out free swinging
11:59and work for Manny Pacquiao
12:00versus Marquez?
12:02He's a rugged, awkward southpaw
12:03who can switch to orthodox,
12:05more of a pressure fighter
12:06than Marquez's last opponent,
12:08Chris John.
12:10I've got to tell you something now,
12:11the wind is really beginning
12:12to whip around more
12:14and the skies are looking ominous.
12:15Yeah, we were concerned about rain
12:17and right now there is the possibility of that.
12:20Well, that impacts things,
12:22but Jandang offers a lot of the problems
12:26that Marquez has had from time to time,
12:29but in the last eight rounds against Pacquiao,
12:32he attacked very, very well.
12:34Some of the things I mentioned in the keys,
12:35he's using the jab,
12:36the overhead right,
12:37and moving his head
12:39not to get a stationary target.
12:40Beautiful quick combination by Marquez.
12:45Jandang does have a habit at times
12:47of carrying his hands low,
12:48but as we pointed out,
12:51extremely fast hands,
12:52really digs to the body.
12:54He can draw, very self-assured,
12:56but we'll see if he has what it takes
12:58against one of the most skilled guys
13:00to come out of Mexico in recent years.
13:02One of the big things,
13:03and we want to look at it
13:04as this fight continues,
13:07Jandang tends to throw his right hand
13:09to the body
13:10and really dip over when he does it,
13:12leave himself wide open
13:13for an overhand right,
13:14and that, of course,
13:15is a great punch for Marquez,
13:17so that's something to look for.
13:19And even though Marquez's career
13:21is a little on the precarious side right now,
13:24he cannot take Jandang lightly
13:26and look ahead to the really big names
13:28that he wants,
13:29like Barrera, Morales, Pacquiao,
13:30but he doesn't seem the type
13:33to do that.
13:35Ryan missed there by Jandang.
13:39Marquez coming up short
13:40with the right.
13:41Steve, they are both throwing
13:42home run balls right now.
13:44And I mean,
13:44they both just missed
13:45straight left from Jandang
13:47and underhand right from Marquez.
13:50Do they know something we don't know?
13:52Maybe they're trying to get this thing
13:53over with fast
13:54before they have to roll out the tarp.
13:56I know you'll get back to your room later.
14:21Round one continues.
14:27I was laughing on the inside.
14:34Jandang has not started
14:36quite as aggressively
14:37as we would have anticipated.
14:41I think part of that
14:42is he has a healthy respect
14:44for Marquez
14:45and that overhand run.
14:51A combination by Marquez
14:58and Jandang says,
14:59okay,
15:00bring it on.
15:02Let's see what you got.
15:03That was a good straight right hand.
15:04You know,
15:04Marquez,
15:05one of the most
15:05that's what Pacquiao landed against him.
15:10He's landed a few of those.
15:12Two, three,
15:12good left hand.
15:15Right hand by Jandang,
15:16very willing to stand
15:17on the horizon.
15:22Here's what we were talking about.
15:24Some heavy clouds,
15:27rain clouds.
15:28They were expecting
15:29some thunderstorms later here
15:31in the Lake Tahoe area.
15:33And let's hope it all holds off
15:34until after this fight.
15:36One of the weapons
15:42that lefties have used
15:43against Marquez,
15:45including Pacquiao's,
15:46with the straight left.
15:47And that one
15:47just nicks the chin
15:49of Marquez.
15:52And of course,
15:53it's the punch of choice
15:54when you're facing him.
16:02One, two,
16:03jump.
16:04One, two,
16:05jump.
16:05Okay,
16:06come back.
16:06Five,
16:07three,
16:07go.
16:10Bobby Villiver
16:11speaks English
16:12in the corner.
16:12The trainer,
16:13another corner person
16:14then passes
16:14the information
16:15on to Jandank
16:16with hand signals,
16:18often using numbers,
16:19Al.
16:20I would think
16:21that could get
16:21a little confusing.
16:22We've seen that before
16:23in some corners.
16:24And yeah,
16:25anything that eliminates
16:26quick and specific
16:30instructions in a corner
16:31can be a problem.
16:33There was a right hand
16:34by Marquez
16:34toward the end
16:35of the last round
16:35that was just perfect.
16:36One of the things
16:37that is impressive
16:38about Marquez
16:39is he can deliver
16:40that right hand
16:40either straight
16:41or wide
16:42whichever way
16:43is more appropriate.
16:45And he always seems
16:46to be in there
16:47versus Southpaw's
16:48in important fights.
16:49Versus Pacquiao,
16:51Derek Hayner,
16:51Freddie Norwood.
16:53He clearly doesn't
16:55have the same
16:55marquee value.
16:57Nevertheless,
16:58a fight
16:58which Marquez
16:59cannot afford
17:00to slip.
17:01He wants to regain
17:02a title.
17:03You hear that wind
17:03whipping around
17:04in our microphones.
17:08Good short right hand
17:09by Marquez.
17:12Marquez said something
17:13interesting to us
17:14yesterday in the fighter
17:15meeting.
17:15He's fought five
17:15or six left.
17:16He's told us he finds
17:17lefties easier
17:19to fight.
17:20He's got to be
17:20in the Menard.
17:21Yeah, and I don't know
17:22if that's 100% true
17:23in this case.
17:23He's had some trouble
17:24with some of them.
17:25But certainly
17:25has some wins
17:27over the likes of Gator
17:28and the draw
17:29with Pacquiao
17:30which some people
17:31think he could have
17:31gotten the decision.
17:32And as I said
17:33in the last eight rounds
17:34of that fight
17:34he did figure him
17:35out very well.
17:38Much less
17:39punch volume
17:40than you and I
17:41saw on the tapes
17:42we saw of Janday.
17:43He's been much
17:44more measured here.
17:46Yeah, he's being
17:47very cautious here.
17:48This is of course
17:49the biggest platform
17:50he has ever been on.
17:52Maybe a little bit
17:53of awe at the moment.
17:56Trying to get warmed up.
17:59Nice body shot
18:00with a left hand
18:01and a left hook
18:01by Marquez.
18:04Hear that wind
18:05kicking up again.
18:09Marquez just likes
18:10it better
18:11when the man
18:12in front of him
18:12will instigate the action.
18:14He's better
18:15as a kind of puncher.
18:16It's not that he'll
18:17just throw out punches
18:18it's a great combination.
18:19He just wants
18:20his opponent
18:21to start off again.
18:22Right here
18:23he's going to do
18:23the job
18:24of instigating as well.
18:25He usually doesn't
18:26initiate the action
18:27and lead with his punches
18:28and waits for guys
18:29to come to him.
18:29but he's putting
18:31on a little more
18:32pressure here
18:32than we're used to seeing.
18:35Jandang's people
18:36were very specific
18:37about how they
18:38were going to pressure
18:39Marquez
18:39but he hasn't
18:40materialized
18:41quite that way so far.
18:42Oh, nice
18:43separate cut.
18:43You see that?
18:45Jandang right on the chin
18:46and it stunned him.
18:47Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
19:16You okay?
19:17You okay?
19:18Okay.
19:19Okay.
19:28Hurry up.
19:29Come on, come on, come on.
19:36Okay, I got him, huh?
19:40Hey, wait.
19:43No more, no more. Hang up. I told you to keep moving. Hang up.
19:51Marquez has all kinds of power. We know that.
19:53And there's the left uppercut that stunned Gian Deng.
19:57You normally don't throw that much in that far off and get away with it.
20:00Marquez did. And from this point on, the power punching,
20:04not just to the head, but the body.
20:05There's the left hook to the body by Marquez.
20:08How smart of him to work the body as well as the head in this instance.
20:11And he landed some wicked shots.
20:14And then the knockdown and almost a knockout
20:18with Gian Deng just barely beating the count
20:20will come here for, again, the left uppercut.
20:24Marquez saw that that punch worked before and used it again.
20:27And it's astonishing, Gian Deng.
20:29I'm amazed that he got in.
20:31Round three.
20:33I mean, that's a brutal round for Gian Deng for the count.
20:37He's going to pick up the right left eye.
20:38Boy, what an explosive attack towards the end of round two
20:42from Marquez.
20:47I think he's right.
20:48He really does think southpaws are easier.
20:52And there's a left hand to the head by Gian Deng.
20:54And they have to come to the chin of Gian Deng.
20:57Marquez countered it.
20:58Oh, whoa!
20:59Low blow.
20:59Low blow by Gian Deng.
21:01They keep going off.
21:02But Gian Deng hit the head.
21:03And Marquez just ripping back.
21:08Gian Deng with the left uppercut.
21:09And on the saw.
21:10Low blow by Gian Deng.
21:11He's up!
21:12High!
21:16High man!
21:17And a win by J. Nady.
21:19I mean, he's on the borderline.
21:20That was low, but he's close.
21:22You better give Gian Deng credit.
21:24He was in monstrous trouble.
21:25He has thrown some big punches and landing a few here.
21:28He's got to be in a tremendous condition
21:31to be able to withstand all this punishment
21:34and then fight on and continue
21:36and look pretty good here in this round.
21:39There's a left hand by Gian Deng.
21:42He's fighting over to that straight left.
21:44And we know he's a good body part.
21:46High!
21:47High!
21:49One point!
21:50One point!
21:51One point!
21:52Low blow!
21:54Fox!
21:54You know, these punches are close to the belt line,
21:58but J. Nady thinking they're low, I guess.
22:00Usually you get two warnings, but...
22:02There's another straight left hand
22:05to the jaw by Gian Deng.
22:07Oh, that was low!
22:09That was low!
22:11No warning by J. Nady to Marquez.
22:14He let it go.
22:17So this is really rough now.
22:20This is a very interesting round.
22:21Gian Deng hanging in.
22:23I'm going to set up a mission!
22:24What a nice shot there.
22:26Look at Marquez and Gian Deng.
22:28Came through with a couple of shots of his own.
22:32Not a place for the Saint of Hardy that went right away.
22:35On all levels.
22:36And the uppercut of Gian Deng,
22:37now a very good weapon
22:38in landing up against Marquez.
22:40And there's some swelling underneath the right eye of Marquez.
22:44Well, this is turning into a vicious fight.
22:46Marquez doing a very good job with his jab.
22:52That's going to have a good weapon for him.
22:54And it's Gian Deng coming forward.
22:57Stalking Marquez.
22:58But this is the way Marquez fights.
23:00He likes it.
23:04Left hand, the far sleeve.
23:06Back comes Marquez with a couple of shots.
23:09Remember, with the point taken away,
23:11this could be a two-point shot.
23:12And he nods at Marquez.
23:39He is oozing with confidence.
23:42You can't stay standing.
23:51Bet you can't stop.
23:55Just keep boxing.
24:01Here is where Gian Deng went low with that punch.
24:04And that certainly was low.
24:05And gets a warning from Jane 80.
24:09And then the second one where...
24:12And that also was very low.
24:14In retrospect, looking at it, it was pretty darn low.
24:16So Jane 80, it takes a point away.
24:18But you should point out that Marquez also had a couple of low blows in that round.
24:23But great action.
24:25Both men throwing a lot of home run shots.
24:27There's the straight left by Gian Deng.
24:29And I'll tell you, he landed a lot of those.
24:31And Marquez coming back with his weapon of choice, the straight right.
24:37Well, as we said, going in, it gets more exciting.
24:42When Marquez has a guy coming at him.
24:44Stop!
24:44Wait a minute now.
24:45Morning for Jane 80 to Marquez.
24:51That right eye of Marquez starting to look back.
24:54He's got a lot of sweat underneath that eye for the straight left hand.
24:58He began to swell in round two.
25:00It's now round four.
25:01And Jandang is trying to use it as target practice for the straight left.
25:07A nice shot by Jandang with the left hand.
25:10Jandang continues to come forward and score.
25:12And he would be making mistakes, Jandang,
25:14despite the point being taken away.
25:17It's a part of his arsenal.
25:19Jandang continues to land with that left hand.
25:22He is having himself a very good round here.
25:25Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!
25:29Now, you know, we know that Marquez is a very good counter-cruncher,
25:43and you would think this would play into his hands,
25:45but the pressure that Jandang is putting on him is going to affect him.
25:48Yeah, he's just leaning on him.
25:49He's in a fight now.
25:51He knows he's got something in front of him.
25:53This is a formidable match.
25:57Good combination there by Marquez,
25:58but it doesn't stop Jandang from coming forward.
26:03Continues to march in on Marquez with that right eye closing.
26:07That's a good one.
26:09Hey, Harri, the right of Marquez.
26:12A straight left right on the injured eye by Jandang.
26:16And that's going to damage that eye.
26:18Stop! Stop!
26:21Box!
26:21That's an important plot line.
26:23And, of course, in between rounds, they'll get the end swell out
26:25and try to bring that swelling down.
26:30No jab from Jandang.
26:32And, you know, he has a pretty good jab.
26:33We saw that in the fights we saw from him.
26:35I think that would be valuable for him to use to work his way in.
26:38And now to the body, Jandang.
26:49Missing there with the left.
26:50He spun around.
26:50Stop!
26:52Box!
26:52Well, his most notable fight is the one against John Guzman
26:57that he lost by decision.
26:59He thinks Guzman's a better fighter than Marquez.
27:01He's said it all week.
27:04He's said he's better, stronger.
27:06And he said he was going to knock Marquez out.
27:08He almost got knocked out a few rounds ago by Marquez.
27:12He just came up.
27:15In time.
27:16Stop!
27:16And now a concerned spectator in the dressing room,
27:44the victorious Rafael Marquez,
27:46who has his fight behind him.
27:48He's now rooting on his older brother.
27:54You can't be in the ropes.
27:55There's no need to.
27:58A little Vaseline, please.
28:01You're closing in.
28:04No.
28:05Is the eye okay?
28:06Can you see?
28:07You need combinations.
28:08With combinations, you stand.
28:11The Jandang left is now like a laser beam
28:15on that swollen eye from Marquez.
28:19And there you saw him landed.
28:21Very quick.
28:22And that was a counterpunch for Jandang.
28:23Let's talk about Marquez.
28:24Let's go with some moves.
28:25Jandang can do it, too.
28:26Marquez's right eye becoming a big factor.
28:35He is squinting heavily right now.
28:38It's obviously bothering him.
28:41They will try everything they can do with the Entswell.
28:43Round five underway here in Lake Tahoe.
28:46Let's see if Jandang's straight left continues to target
28:51but it is damaged up.
28:53And here it's done.
28:54He's got a right out of the way.
28:59Marquez trying to go to the body.
29:01Jandang answers to the body himself.
29:04He wants one tough kick from the back.
29:06We have not seen that left uppercut from Marquez.
29:10The one that first got Jandang in trouble
29:13and then knocked him down earlier.
29:15There it is.
29:16Perfect.
29:19Very effective punch.
29:23Jandang just missing with that right hook.
29:27Now Marquez covering the face of Jandang with the left jab.
29:32Look at the press row scoring.
29:34I think it's all Marquez.
29:38I've got 30 to 37 for Marquez.
29:41I'm blessed with the Marquez.
29:46He's doing some work.
29:48Getting the cheers for the crowd.
29:54Jandang continuing to work to the body
29:56and hasn't gotten his...
29:57He's kept his punches legal
29:58and hasn't gotten any warnings and pointy functions.
30:01Nice switches to righty, Jandang.
30:02Let's see how this works.
30:03He can do it.
30:04Man's done.
30:05Yeah, we mentioned that earlier.
30:06He can switch to unorthodox.
30:08Orphan!
30:09Orphan!
30:10Orphan!
30:12Orphan!
30:12Orphan!
30:13Orphan!
30:13Orphan!
30:14Orphan!
30:14He just switched back and nailed him with a straight left.
30:22Now he's back and right.
30:24Jandang.
30:25This has been a very good round for Marquez.
30:35He's used a jab.
30:35He's used a straight right hand.
30:37Got caught with a good left by Jandang, but for the most part, it's been a great round for Marquez.
30:46He's used a jab.
30:47He's used a jab.
30:47He's used a straight right hand.
30:51Got caught with a good left by Jandang, but for the most part, it's been a great round for Marquez.
30:58And you're talking about a guy who can barely shoot out of Marquez.
31:12Jandang's trying to line Marquez up with a stroke left.
31:26That's an uppercut by Marquez, that score.
31:29And that's the puncher Marquez.
31:33It's all over, Jandang.
31:35Bell! Bell!
31:36Great round for Marquez.
31:47A little more wrestling.
31:50He's gonna fall down.
31:51Believe me.
31:52That's how the boxing is.
31:54You gotta put everything to it when you have a chance.
31:59You caught him already.
32:00You caught him.
32:01This is the sixth round.
32:03Yes.
32:04All right.
32:05Okay.
32:06This is your fight.
32:07Marquez throwing excellent combinations.
32:10He is a very skilled fighter.
32:11Look at that.
32:12What was given to him was the middle.
32:13Right up the middle.
32:14And he was able to land those punches against Jandang.
32:16And we begin round six.
32:17You got a good look at that right eye of Juan Manuel Marquez.
32:21Despite the damage to the eye, he comes off a very effective fifth round.
32:28He told us he did not look at any tapes of Jandang.
32:29He just said, I prepare.
32:30I didn't look at any tapes of him.
32:31I just prepare myself as well as I can.
32:33And let the chips fall where they may.
32:34Marquez says he doesn't go in with a specific strategy.
32:38He prepares himself for every possibility.
32:39Pushed Jandang back.
32:40Trained with three different teams.
32:41He's got a good look at that right eye of Juan Manuel Marquez.
32:43He's got a good look at that right eye of Juan Manuel Marquez.
32:44Despite the damage to the eye, he comes off a very effective fifth round.
32:47He told us he did not look at any tapes of Jandang.
32:51He just said, I prepare.
32:52I didn't look at any tapes of him.
32:54I just prepare myself as well as I can.
32:56And let the chips fall where they may.
32:58Marquez says he doesn't go in with a specific strategy.
33:01He prepares himself for every possibility.
33:03Pushed Jandang back.
33:07Trained with three different sparring partners.
33:09One tall, one fast, and then strong.
33:12So he gets it all.
33:13That's pretty much everything.
33:14Covers all bases.
33:19He's ready for anything he should.
33:21You know, in boxing, so often,
33:24mostly though Marquez was off balance.
33:28In boxing, we see sometimes international fighters ranked highly
33:32who come and don't have the goods.
33:34But Jandang, a perfect example of somebody who
33:36does, ranked number one in this organization,
33:39ranked highly in this organization,
33:41and a fighter that has skills.
33:43Seems to be a little blood along the left eye of Jandang.
33:47Blood on the bridge of his nose, as you can see.
33:52There it is.
33:53Now you can see the cut on the left eyebrow.
33:56Well, we're seeing tonight that the Marquez brothers have been in very exciting and interesting matches,
34:11and it makes us want to see them more often.
34:13Yeah, the lighter weight classes are underrated.
34:18It's exciting, because now a lot of these guys have power, too.
34:22Absolutely.
34:23Absolutely.
34:24We've seen that.
34:25Good straight right hand.
34:26Marquez, again, handling a very good round here,
34:29by throwing a lot of punches.
34:35That little left upper tuck,
34:37is a person who should not avoid it.
34:39The big straight right hand.
34:40That's not too bad either.
34:41Three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
34:53You okay?
34:54He's game.
34:55Down only once in 25 fights.
34:59Coming in now down twice against Marquez here tonight.
35:03He's got 30 seconds to go.
35:05And he keeps coming forward.
35:07He's taken some massive shots by Marquez.
35:22Look at Marquez, though.
35:24He never loses his potential.
35:26Like, ever.
35:27Or gets out of his ribbons.
35:30Be excited!
35:31Go Arau!
35:32Go ustedes!
35:33Go Arau!
35:34Go Arau!
35:35Go Arau!
35:36Thank you very much.
36:06the combination punching of Juan Manuel Marquez, impressive for most of his fight.
36:15And there he throws an uppercut from farther back than you would like to throw it,
36:18yet it lands perfectly and then follows with an overhand right.
36:21Really, that was all started with the jab that was a rangefinder.
36:24And you see from above what he does with the jab.
36:28He uses it as a rangefinder and then throws what is an unorthodox combination,
36:33the right uppercut and the overhand right.
36:35But you can do that when you're an average of a quick puncher.
36:40A major sense of urgency in the Shandang corner, another 10-8 round for Marquez.
36:45Shandang down in the second round and down in the sixth.
36:51Beautiful right uppercut and overhand right by Marquez getting top-down down in the last round.
36:57Of course, it was late in the round.
36:59We talked at the beginning, Stu, about what was necessary tonight for one man,
37:04and then Marquez winning was good, winning impressively was even better
37:09to demonstrate what he is in this weight division against a very tough guy.
37:14Right now, anyway, he's winning impressive.
37:16And he wants to get back in the race.
37:19Beautiful uppercut, left-up to five shots, more uppercuts by Marquez.
37:27We should point out that this fight, there, you look at the scoring, it's lopsided.
37:32I have it lopsided as well.
37:34Four-point win actually right now for Marquez.
37:36You know, Marquez lost to Chris John in the Far East in the fight.
37:40He's been easier for giving him the search.
37:42He won't come again.
37:44This could get him closer to Marquez.
37:46A touchdown by Marquez.
37:48He's trying to end it here, and he does.
37:5010-80 has stopped the fight.
37:53A very impressive TKO victory for Juan Manuel Marquez,
37:57and he alerts the boxing world that he goes back.
38:07His brother celebrates.
38:08Come on.
38:10Third part of the story.
38:14Close.
38:23Close.
38:24Close.
38:24Close.
38:27Close.
38:30The doctor's in there checking things out.
38:31Look at the right eye of Marquez.
38:32He is now going in there to make sure thatいい things.
38:36Okay, okay, okay.
38:37Okay, okay.
38:37He says.
38:39He wants a bat to give it up.
38:47He is a classic.
38:50Close.
38:50Close.
38:54Close.
38:54Close.
38:54Manuel completes a glorious night out
39:06for the Brothers Marquez.
39:08It was a superb performance,
39:11and nothing he did tonight was any better
39:14than the way he closed the show.
39:15Great body shots.
39:17A complete arsenal of punches.
39:20That's as diversified attack as you can possibly have.
39:22Body shots, uppercuts, jabs, straight right hands,
39:27nothing left out of that barrage by Juan Manuel Marquez
39:30against a very game and pretty skilled opponent.
39:34We see the work downstairs and upstairs by him,
39:38and the hand speed's very impressive.
39:41He says he feels like a 20-year-old.
39:43He looked like a 20-year-old in there
39:44because not only did he show power,
39:47he showed hand speed and combinations and all the rest of it,
39:49and when a fighter engages him, as Jean Dang did,
39:52he's very, very effective.
39:54Had trouble with Chris John across the way
39:57because he was a boxer,
39:58but when you are anywhere within punching range
40:01for Juan Manuel Marquez, you will get this,
40:05the hand speed and the combination punching.
40:07It was a superb effort all the way through,
40:10and had to face adversity
40:11because Jean Dang did land a lot of punches,
40:13and that swelling under the right eye
40:15gave Marquez an issue.
40:18And then back in the dressing room,
40:20here's the reaction of his younger brother
40:22at the time of the stoppage.
40:24Rafael Marquez celebrates his brother's victory
40:27in the main event.
40:28So amidst all of this beauty and serenity,
40:31what an explosive and brutal display
40:35by Juan Manuel Marquez.
40:38Both of these brothers had to get past
40:40gritty and pretty darn good opponents tonight
40:43to show their excellence.
40:44Let's get it up to Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
40:46for the official announcement.
40:49Ladies and gentlemen,
40:51we have the time of 1 minute 13 seconds
40:55in round number 7.
40:57Or if we're in charge,
40:58Jay Nadey stops the contest.
41:00He is the winner by way of technical knockout,
41:03and he is the new interim WBO featherweight champion
41:08of the world,
41:10Juan Manuel Marquez.
41:17With his right eye almost completely shut,
41:20he runs his record to 45-3-1
41:22with 34 knockouts,
41:24and he's now the mandatory
41:25for Scott Harrison's WBO crowd.
41:28If Harrison can make weight
41:29after he comes out of rehab,
41:31a new life for this man
41:32who could now get a higher profile fight
41:35at 126 or even 130
41:37with the likes of Guerrero,
41:39Morales Pacquiao,
41:40or Rocky Juarez if he gets by Guerrero.
41:42And he can really prove he's the best
41:45at these weights.
41:46We'll have a post-fight reaction
41:52in just a moment with Jim Gray,
41:53but let's check out the latest from Showbox,
41:56the new generation from last night.
41:58Our eight-fighter super middleweight tournament
42:00has concluded.
42:02It's opening rounds,
42:03and now the field has been released
42:04for four semi-finalists.
42:07Henry Buchanan,
42:09John Paul Mendy,
42:10LaFarrell Bunting,
42:11and Tony Hanshaw
42:12all advanced
42:13for the next round
42:14on October the 6th.
42:17And we'll take a look at the matchups
42:19for those two semi-final bouts.
42:21The two finalists
42:22will meet in January of 2007
42:24with the winner crown
42:25as the new IBO
42:27super middleweight champion.
42:31Let's go up to Jim Gray
42:32in the ring.
42:32Jim?
42:35All right, Steve.
42:36Thank you very much.
42:37Juan, congratulations to you.
42:39Felix de Jesus
42:40will once again translate for us.
42:43I want to ask you
42:44about that first round
42:45when you came out.
42:46It looked as though
42:47you were able to establish control.
42:49You put him down
42:49in the second round.
42:50Did you anticipate
42:51that this fight
42:52would last seven rounds
42:53after that?
42:53He's a south boy.
43:11He's a very difficult fighter
43:12and even though
43:13I knocked him down
43:14in the first round
43:14I knew it was going to be
43:15a good fight.
43:16He was able to hit you
43:17with that left hook repeatedly.
43:19Is your eye okay?
43:23He's a great fighter.
43:35The first time he hit me
43:36I wasn't aware of it.
43:37I stumbled a little bit
43:39but then after the second time
43:41I knew I had to watch out
43:42for that south boy.
43:43Did it impair you at all
43:44and were you concerned
43:45that they might have to stop
43:45the fight because of its closing?
43:47No, the eye is not closed.
43:59He still had vision in the eye
44:00and he was still able to fight.
44:03Scott Harrison next
44:04if he can get out of rehab
44:06and be able to make the fight.
44:09He says he's ready for anybody
44:14under 126 pounds
44:15and 130 pounds.
44:16All right.
44:17You watched your brother.
44:18You were very nervous.
44:19He was very nervous
44:20watching you.
44:20It's difficult to be
44:21on the same card?
44:24I was very nervous
44:25to see you fight.
44:26It's difficult to be
44:27in the same card.
44:28I think it's difficult
44:29in terms of the nerves
44:30but it's a great motivation
44:31that we both fight together.
44:34We were both very nervous
44:35but it's a great motivation
44:36that we're both
44:37on the same card.
44:38Let me backtrack
44:39for just a moment.
44:39What about Pacquiao
44:40if the Harrison fight
44:41doesn't come about?
44:42Si no, pelea con Harrison
44:44Manny Pacquiao.
44:45Quisiera pelea con Manny Pacquiao?

44:50He estado esperando
44:50mucho esa pelea.
44:51No se ha llegado
44:52a concretar.
44:53I repeat,
44:53I'm ready for anybody

44:56He's been waiting

44:58for the fight to happen.
44:59Congratulations to Yuan.

45:15and kids.
45:15All right.
45:16Congratulations to you.
45:19Let's now turn here.
45:21How are you feeling?
45:22We have Michael Doe
45:24will come in
45:25and translate for us.
45:26Are you okay?
45:27You were very confident
45:55during the week
45:55that you were a better fighter
45:57and you made some statements
45:59along the lines
45:59that you thought
46:00that you would be victorious
46:01in this fight.
46:03Why were you not able
46:05to back up what it is
46:06that you had felt
46:06you were going to be able
46:07to accomplish?
46:09What is the reason
46:10why he didn't follow?
46:11He said he tried to follow up
46:25but he said
46:38Marquez is very smart
46:39and he's very quick.
46:41He knew Marquez
46:43he knew
46:43he followed him
46:44and then he turned
46:45he's very smart
46:47very quick.
46:47You were very courageous
46:49tonight
46:49after the second round
46:50when you went down
46:51you came back
46:52and put on
46:52a very game fight.
46:54Was it your feeling
46:55after the second round
46:56that you would be able
46:57to get back
46:57into this fight?
46:58if after the first
47:01when he got dropped
47:02in the second time
47:03how he feel?
47:05How he didn't
47:05it be the end?
47:06When he woke up
47:21he feel nothing.
47:23He feel nothing.
47:24Thank you for fighting
47:26tonight.
47:27Congratulations.
47:28It was a very game
47:28fight of you.
47:29All right.
47:29Let's go back to you, Steve.
47:31All right, Jim.
47:32Thanks so much.
47:34We'll check out
47:35how the scoring went
47:36for Marquez versus
47:37Zandang
47:38at the time of the
47:40at the time of the stoppage.
47:42We'll tell you
47:42we'll show you that
47:44in just a moment.
47:48Let's recap the fight first.
47:50Let's go back to
47:51to the first knockdown
47:53which occurred in round
47:54number two, Al.
47:56Yeah, Marquez
47:56unloaded with this
47:58left uppercut.
47:59It would be a punch
48:00that we would see
48:01more of during
48:02the course of this fight
48:03and he went after
48:05Zandang
48:05got him in some trouble
48:06and would use
48:07the same punch
48:08ultimately
48:09to actually put him down.
48:11Marquez doing work
48:12not only to the head
48:14but also the body
48:15and it'd be
48:16that left uppercut
48:17that would send him
48:18to the canvas.
48:20And interestingly
48:20this was a knockdown
48:22that you really
48:23had the feeling
48:24maybe
48:25Zandang would not
48:26get up from
48:26and he did
48:27in fact
48:28just barely
48:29beat the count
48:30at nine.
48:31There's the punch
48:32that sent him down.
48:33When a fighter
48:33goes down
48:34in this posture
48:35for the most part
48:36he doesn't beat
48:37the count.
48:37we flash forward
48:42to round six
48:43where the hand speed
48:46and the right uppercut
48:48of Marquez
48:49became a big weapon.
48:51So both uppercuts
48:52from the left
48:53and the right side
48:53were very important
48:54for him
48:55but it's not as if
48:56they were the only punches
48:57he threw
48:57because Marquez
48:58had a very diversified
49:00attack this evening
49:02and he needed it
49:03against this very gritty
49:04Turzak Jandang.
49:08He was in trouble here
49:10and ultimately
49:13at the end of the fight
49:14Marquez would get to him
49:15using some of the same weapons
49:17working the body
49:17and the uppercut.
49:19Again
49:19it worked
49:20so why not keep going to it
49:21but he had a lot more than that.
49:24The jab
49:24the straight right hand
49:25so many impressive punches
49:27in his arsenal tonight
49:29and what I think
49:30was most impressive
49:31about what Marquez did
49:32was
49:32Steve he showed us
49:35everything he has
49:37as a fighter.
49:37Good hand speed
49:38good power
49:39for the most part
49:40good defense
49:41even though he got hit
49:42with some of those
49:42straight locks.
49:43Yeah and impressively
49:44he did a lot of that
49:45under duress.
49:46I mean his eye
49:46was practically closed
49:47as we take a look
49:48at the official judges
49:50scores at the time
49:51of the stoppage.
49:52Dwayne Ford
49:53had Marquez
49:54head
49:55in one-sided fashion.
49:58Michael Pernick
49:59had it 59-52
50:00and Doug Tucker
50:01had the biggest disparity
50:0260-51 at the time
50:04of the stoppage
50:05for Juan Manuel Marquez
50:06and all of the
50:08press row scorers
50:10had a one-sided decision
50:11to Marquez
50:12at the time of the stoppage.
50:14You see Tom Gardner
50:15Mike Hauser
50:15who had the biggest margin
50:17there
50:17and Mario Serrano
50:19had it like Gardner
50:20at 59-52
50:21for Marquez.
50:26Well it's
50:26congratulations all around
50:28back in the dressing room.
50:29This was so entertaining.
50:31Let's hope the Marquez brothers
50:32don't wait another five years
50:33before fighting on the same
50:34fight card again.
50:36Rafael clearly made
50:37his point tonight
50:38and Juan Manuel
50:39says bring on
50:40the big names.
50:42So here
50:43under just
50:44beautiful surroundings
50:46in Lake Tahoe, Nevada
50:49it was a great night
50:50a monumental night
50:51for the Marquez.
