00:00All right let's get to it. We close in on our first bout as number two super
00:04battleweight contender Oscar Larios of Mexico meets John Lowy from Ireland.
00:10Can an Irishman lose on St. Patrick's Day. Here is John Lowy unrated in his only world title shot
00:17lost to then WBC superman away champ Eric Morales in Tijuana in 97. He took some kind of beating
00:22that night. He lost some points on head butts. Didn't come out for the eighth. He set out the
00:28next 22 months since returning. He's won a pair of decisions last fourth July almost eight months
00:33ago. Most of his wins over unspectacular opposition long stretches of inactivity only two fights the
00:40last two years. Bobby you got a question what kind of shape he's in and how much that Morales fight
00:45took out of him. We know he said the Morales fight gave him some confidence because he did much better
00:49than a lot of people expected. So mentally he's probably better off from the Morales fight physically
00:54maybe a little less. But the thing that bothers me most is that he can't stay sharp. He's had
00:58time to get in shape with such inactivity. Steve it's almost impossible to stay sharp. And I think
01:03he's in a do or die situation. He needs it and he needs it now. He didn't fight at all in 92 93 and 98. We'll get into that a bit later. Let's get your keys to victory for Lowy.
01:12Well it's real simple. He's got to establish a jab against a fighter who's taller but comes in low. Also control the pace. He's never been past eight rounds and boxed smart from the outside.
01:20Larios is going to press him.
01:21And speaking of Larios. Let's take a look at the man who's number two of the WBC behind Michael Brody at 122. Won the Mexican Super Bantamweight belt in 98.
01:33Beat Cesar Soto to set up his only attempt at a world title back in January.
01:38Larios was the most impressive story. Narrowly lost a unanimous decision to WBC Super Bantamweight champ Willie Horan of the champion's hometown of Sacramento. Very questionable scoring. I thought Larios was the more impressive, busier, landing more, controlled the tempo, outworked.
01:51Horan should have outpointed him. And Bobby when you come off a bitter loss like Larios how tough is it to put it behind you and focus on the next guy. For some fighters just like individuals adversity is easier to overcome than others.
02:02For Larios, if he starts feeling sorry for himself and gets a big letdown in, he's going to lessen his ability to perform at this level. The flip side of that coin, it may add fuel to the fire to motivate him to excel even more and become a better fighter because of it. We're going to find out tonight which is the case.
02:16Keys for Larios.
02:17Okay. Larios has to work in behind the jab. He's taller with long range, but he needs to use that jab to work in. Also push Lowy backward. Lowy cannot fight backward. And again, keep the pressure on. It's a guy who's never been past eight rounds and may fade real soon.
02:29Let's size him up. Tail of the tape. Larios, 24, 10 years younger than Lowy. One inch height advantage for Larios, who also has a slight edge in reach.
02:39At yesterday's weigh-in, both over the 122 limit. Fight time waits. No change for Larios. Still 124. Lowy, a plus six and a half at 130 pounds.
02:48Key unified rules for this non-title bout. There's no standing eight count. No three knockdown rule. A fighter cannot be saved to the bell in any round.
02:55Accidental headbutt before the end of the fourth. It's a no contest. After the end of four, they go to the cards.
03:02So here at the convention center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, getting set for
03:05Oscar Larios and John Lowy. Let's get the formal introductions from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
03:12Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you, and we welcome you to the convention center here in
03:18Albuquerque, New Mexico, as we have a big night of action coming your way. Brought to you by Don
03:25Chargan Productions and Fresquez Productions in association with Showtime Championship Boxing.
03:33Tonight's bouts are sanctioned by the New Mexico State Athletic Commission. The officials as appointed
03:39are physicians at ringside, Dr. John Wagner and Dr. Gary Nunez. Timekeepers at the bell also keeping count of the
03:46knockdowns. We have Melissa Size, Joan V. Brantz, and Terry McDowell. Introducing to you are three
03:53judges, all three of them from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jim Backshaw, Larry Chavez, and Russell Mora.
04:01And the third man of the ring, our referee in charge of this bout, introducing Tony Rosales.
04:08All right, fans, here we go with the first of our Super Bantamweight special attractions scheduled
04:15for ten rounds of boxing. Introducing to you first on my lapty is fighting out of the blue
04:21corner, wearing blue trunks with white trim, fighting out of Monroe, New York, by way of
04:28County Down, Ireland. He weighed in at 123 and one half pounds, with a record of 27 wins,
04:36two losses. He has 18 wins coming by way of knockout, introducing a fighter known as the
04:43quiet man, John Lowy. And his opponent across the ring, on my right, fighting out of the red
04:56corner in this ten-round attraction, wearing white trunks with green and red trim, hailing
05:02from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. His weight, 124 pounds, his record 39 wins, three losses and
05:12one draw, with 30 big wins coming by way of knockout. He has ranked the WBC number two Super Bantamweight
05:20in the world. He is known as El Campeon Sin Corona. Introducing Oscar Chololo Larios.
05:32And once again a referee in charge, Tony Rosales, now to give instructions, ten rounds of boxing schedule.
05:39Okay, gentlemen, explain the rules to both of you in the dressing room. Expect yourself to conduct yourself as professionals. Good luck to both of you. Good right here. Good right here. Good luck. Let's get it.
05:52Final instructions from Tony Rosales. Oscar Larios, confident, soft-spoken, aggressive fighter, workmanlike, nothing flashy, straight ahead. He just stays busy, goes to the body. He's a good counterpunch. He tends to break slowly.
06:08Meanwhile, John Lowy at the opening bell with Morales sprinted from his corner and attacked Morales from behind. He hadn't finished his prayers yet, which is perfectly legal to go after a guy as long as the bell sounds. But it was tough to rattle Morales. He is an awkward, herky-jerky type guy. Tenacious, durable, good chin, but tends to lead with his head at times.
06:29Larios came right out to make a point through a big right hand. He means business, and he wants to start quick. Larios makes the adjustments well. He's a smart fighter. He is susceptible to cuts, which could factor in, given Lowy's tendency to come in with his head.
06:44Lowy believes he's a puncher, but not a prolific puncher. He tries to wear people down, mainly works from the outside, almost everything off the jab, but punches and bursts in and out. Not a lot of movement. Kind of stands right in front of his opponent.
06:58Well, the two times he stepped up big, Morales and Kennedy McKinney, TKO by in eight, both fighters. Stopped him in eight rounds. There's a certain degree of toughness. You have to assume he's gone eight rounds with two good fighters.
07:10Lowy was banned from boxing in England because of a medical condition, although he told us he can reapply for a license if he wants to. The issue concerns scar tissue in his head, which he claims is not a result of the fight game and is not on the brain.
07:25Lowy, regardless of whether it's from fighting or not, the British boxing board of control saw a fit in the early nineties to disallow him to fight. I just find it curious that he's allowed to fight here in the United States.
07:36Lowy hasn't shown me any real ability to punch just yet. So far, he's been basically defensive, throwing some punches, but nothing serious.
07:44Larios, on the other hand, he's unloading some bigger bombs. He means bad intentions behind many of them.
07:49Lowy sat out 92 and 93 when he was banished from boxing, 98 because of managerial problems, as he explained it to us.
08:02Larios told us he's concerned about the possibility of the cutting. He still has scar tissue under the brow of his right eye from the Cesar Soto fight.
08:10So we'll watch that area closely. Larios is telegraphing that right hand something off, and he is drawing back all the way back to California for that right hand.
08:21Break, break, break, break.
08:25Larry Oss in the white trunks. His number one goal is another title shot. He feels a win tonight could lead to a fight with the winner of Willie Horan versus number one Michael Brody in June.
08:35You notice on the front of his trunks, it says Chololo. As a kid, he could say his dad's name, Teodoro, also a fighter, a former lightweight, so it came out Chololo, and the nickname just stuck.
08:47Terrific counter left hook right there by Chololo. He threw a nice left hook over the right hand of Lowy, but Lowy's showing a pretty good chin because that left hand landed perfect.
08:57Lowy, because of edge, looking to pace himself, outweighs the energy box from the outside, get in and out. He told us he never watches tapes.
09:05And didn't even know Larry Osses' record. Well, it's 39. Yeah, I do too. It's 39, 3-1 with 30 knockouts.
09:13I didn't have the courage to tell him at our final meeting yesterday.
09:17Lowy is 27-2 with 18 knockouts. His losses to Kennedy McKinney and Eric Morales.
09:23There you go, John. There you go. There you go.
09:30John Paul Gonzalez, our translator.
09:34What I want you to do, I want you to throw a little more extension on that jab, okay?
09:40A little more extension on that jab, okay?
09:44Pop his head back on that jab.
09:45Larry Osses, yeah.
09:53I just think they're speaking English in the corner.
09:55Larry Osses did speak English to us at the meeting yesterday.
09:58That's interesting.
09:58All right?
09:59Yes.
10:00That's a good one.
10:01You gotta take, you gotta be careful with the headless, fight's dirty.
10:16Always work the size, never in front.
10:22Go fighters, you gotta be faster, go!
10:26Round two, it's scheduled for ten, Superman awaits.
10:30They're both a little over.
10:34Barrios comes out aggressively.
10:37He said in order to win this fight, he's gotta put on the pressure.
10:40He said the only way Lowy can beat him is with the headbutt.
10:43He has a little bit of a reputation that Lowy does carry with him,
10:46that he'll hit you with anything he can, his head, his elbows, forearm,
10:48and that he's not the cleanest of fighters.
10:50Haven't seen any of that yet.
10:53Larios has been working on his defensive moves and balance,
10:57which could be a big factor against the awkward, unorthodox Lowy.
11:02Larios missing with a big right.
11:05You see he's telegraphing that right hand, and Lowy can see it coming.
11:08He's unloading, and he's pulling his arm back and lifting his elbow high in the air.
11:11You can see that a mile away.
11:13And I noticed in watching tapes myself that Larios is somewhat susceptible to right hands.
11:18We'll see if Lowy, who didn't watch the tapes, is able to pull it off.
11:23Lowy said he likes to adjust to whatever a fighter brings, but I think, to a certain degree,
11:28you should really like to know what he brings in ahead of time, so you're at least slightly prepared.
11:32Break, break, break, break, break.
11:33Get back.
11:34Let's ahead, fighter. Come on.
11:35Fighters say, some fighters who don't watch tapes say the reason they don't watch is because
11:39when the fight begins, then all of a sudden they see a completely different fighter in the ring,
11:44and it confuses them.
11:45They have a preconceived notion going in. They can't change.
11:47You can't make it additions or subtractions to make it work, and certainly that's what a corner's for.
11:54Lowy in the blue with the white trim.
11:57Oh, an overhand right on the head by Larios.
12:03He scored with that one, but he didn't really follow it up.
12:08Now he pounds to the body.
12:10Lowy got a little quick uppercut in there.
12:13Larios has been consistent with that left hook to the body,
12:15but he's also been consistently wide and, again, telegraphed.
12:18He's leaning his hands out there wide.
12:20Lowy opens up.
12:23A little head action, too, by Lowy there, finally.
12:28We had been talking it up.
12:31He hadn't done anything up to that point.
12:33Less than a minute for betting round two.
12:35Lowy opened his career with 21 straight wins, 14 by knockout after his first loss in 95 to Kennedy McKinney.
12:45He knocked out his next four.
12:46Don't leave with your head.
12:47And now the cautioning by Tony Rosales telling Lowy not to lead with his head.
12:51That was a triple push.
12:56Come on, come here.
12:57Lowy forearmed him and Larios went down.
12:59No knockdown.
13:01So things getting a little on the roughhouse side now.
13:04Towards the end of round two.
13:07Wild miss by Lowy.
13:10As he telegraphed the left.
13:13Larios is letting Lowy come to him too often.
13:16And that's when Lowy's effective with the jab and some combinations.
13:19Another wild miss there with the right by Lowy.
13:22And Larios did not make him pay.
13:24Pay!
13:25Good job.
13:27Good, good.
13:28You're doing beautiful, baby.
13:31You're doing beautiful.
13:33Good job.
13:34You need some water.
13:35Breathe.
13:36Deep breath.
13:37Deep breath.
13:38Want some water now?
13:40Yeah.
13:41Come on.
13:42Okay, John.
13:43Listen to me.
13:44The left hook is working for you.
13:46Okay?
13:47Left hook is working for you.
13:48Alright?
13:49Right up on top.
13:50Every time he shoots I want you to counter with the left hook.
13:52Another thing is he's looping.
13:53He's looping his jabs.
13:55Okay?
13:56I want you to rock back, counter with his straight right hand.
13:58Okay?
13:59Bring it down on him.
14:00Boom!
14:01Bring it down on him.
14:02I'm gonna take a look here.
14:04Watch this right hand right here.
14:05He's gonna take this right hand.
14:06He's gonna cock it all the way back.
14:07And Lowy's gonna be able to see that.
14:09As he's coming in, Larios cocks that right hand.
14:12See him pull it back?
14:13He pulls it back before he throws it.
14:15The fighter's gonna pick that off every time.
14:18And then Lowy counter with the left hook.
14:21And here's a little bit of head work on the inside.
14:23Put his head down and dig it in.
14:25Not a big, blatant butt, but a sneaky little try at it.
14:30Round number three scheduled for 10.
14:34Lowy only 12 rounds of boxing in over three years.
14:39He's never been past.
14:41He told me, guys.
14:42Come on, box.
14:43This round, Larios came out in the aggressive position,
14:47pushing Lowy backward.
14:48That's where he needs to fight the fight.
14:49Lowy's not gonna fight while going back.
14:51A little bit of power he does generate.
14:53He's always coming forward.
14:57Nice right hand here.
14:58Partially blocked, but effective.
15:00Lowy got the left glove up to block that right hand to some extent.
15:09John Lowy eluding that right hand by Larios.
15:13Larios taking some wild swings.
15:16He's got the hands really up high, Larios.
15:19Now he brings him back down.
15:22Trying to go to the body now, Larios.
15:24If you notice, he cocks it right before he throws it, Steven.
15:27And he swings it so wide, it takes extra time to get there.
15:30And you see it.
15:31This is not the same Larios I saw against Willie Horan.
15:33And that may be because of the awkward nature of Lowy.
15:37Not only that, but I'll tell you something.
15:39And this is sometimes hard for people to understand.
15:42If a good fighter really fears somebody or respects him,
15:45he'll stay clean.
15:46The guy who doesn't respect their fear, he gets sloppy.
15:49Sometimes it just works.
15:53But I think Larios is doing a lot of missing.
15:55Come on John, stop holding him.
15:56Which is something he wasn't doing against Horan.
16:01Which I thought he got robbed.
16:03It appeared in that fight that Larios outworked him in,
16:08but he didn't get the decision.
16:09We know how that works.
16:13Lowy on the attack, kicking into the ribs with the right.
16:20Holding and hitting by Larios, the warning from referee Tony Rosales.
16:33He's not going to hit too many people that cleanly with punches like that.
16:43He's a bigger man with a longer jab.
16:44He's not working behind that either.
16:45That would be very, very important for him.
16:46Larios tall, rangy, 5'7", 68", inch reach.
16:48Lowy 5'6", 67", inch reach.
16:50Lowy 5'6", 67", inch reach.
17:02We come up on 20 seconds remaining in round three.
17:09Lowy against the ropes with Larios leading on him.
17:13Larios throwing too many one-at-a-time big bombs.
17:16He needs to throw two, three, four-punch combinations
17:18cleanly and not telegraph and load up.
17:22Heading for the bell.
17:24go!
17:39John Paul Gonzales sort of.
17:42How are you feeling down?
17:48How would you feel the thing?
17:51You can't risk exposing yourself unnecessarily.
18:00Keep it straight.
18:02Fight to the side.
18:05And use that jab.
18:10You're better than he is.
18:12Early in the round when he pushed lowly backward,
18:14Laris was very effective with the jab and the forward motion.
18:17He jabbed the right hand.
18:18A lot of this was being blocked,
18:19but still, something like that left hook snuck through.
18:22And not only that, but Laris is not offensive at all.
18:25Excuse me, he's doing all the offense.
18:27Lowey's not scoring a point.
18:30Left to the head, guys.
18:31We had a round four.
18:33Laris has the better ring skills,
18:36but what's happening here
18:39that he can't really get all over Lowey?
18:43One of my favorite phrases, Steve.
18:45Sometimes fighters are effective in their awkwardness.
18:47Very good.
18:48In stereo.
18:49John Lowey, known as
18:54Wyatt Mann.
18:56Don't we just see a guy with that nickname?
18:58A little heavier than us.
19:00A fellow named John Ruiz, yeah,
19:01who beat the Vanderholy Field a couple of weeks back
19:03to take the WBA heavyweight title.
19:06The thing is, though,
19:08Lowey turned pro in 88,
19:09Ruiz in 92.
19:10So we have to give the nickname credit to Lowey.
19:15A good combination of the head,
19:17followed by a right uppercut by Laris,
19:18and those punches have got in.
19:22Lowey takes a lot of punches.
19:24But he's got a good chin.
19:26He's been down three times in 29 fights.
19:28Laris down only once versus Israel Vazquez in 97,
19:33his 22nd fight.
19:34It came in the first round,
19:36and it was a first-round knockout loss.
19:42Laris is just not putting together the combinations.
19:44He's not working behind the jab.
19:45There's a nice combination,
19:47and very effective.
19:48And a straight right by Laris that got through.
19:51Maybe he heard me.
19:53So things beginning to perk up here all of a sudden,
19:57and Laris stepping up the pace.
20:00Now, there you saw the past two combinations,
20:02a much straighter right hand by Laris.
20:04It scored.
20:04The big, wide, telegraphed one did not score.
20:07Break! Break!
20:09Step back. Step back.
20:10Laris, 39, 3-1, 30 knockouts,
20:13the number two WBC Super Battle,
20:1508 contender, lost to Israel Vazquez,
20:18Agapito Sanchez,
20:20and then more recently,
20:21Willie Horan.
20:22The disputed decision.
20:28Lowery does not waste a lot of emotion or energy.
20:30He really doesn't.
20:32And he's walking into punches now by Laris.
20:35Showing a pretty good channel.
20:44Hey!
20:45Now, lowy is tenacious.
20:47There's no question about that.
20:49Tough kid from county down Ireland,
20:52south of Belfast,
20:53training out of Monroe, New York.
20:56Break! Break!
20:58Stop.
20:58Last time we're going to warn you,
21:00play a rabbit punch.
21:00He's down, okay?
21:01I'm going to take a point, okay?
21:03Box!
21:03Look at him who you are.
21:04Lowy hitting behind the head.
21:06Rosanna said next time we'll take a point.
21:12And the way things are going,
21:13he can't afford that.
21:14Right, step back!
21:15Fuck!
21:17Larry was complaining of headbutts by Lloyd,
21:19but I think that was just accidental
21:20in coincidence of clash.
21:22Oh my God!
21:26Oh!
21:26Oh!
21:27Well, coming up next,
21:29our main event,
21:30Johnny Tapia versus
21:31Pommasito Gomez.
21:33We'll take you into the dressing room
21:35of Johnny Tapia
21:36looking to bounce back
21:37from his second loss
21:38to Paulie Ayala
21:38who recently lashed out at Tapia,
21:41saying he can't face
21:41the fact that he lost.
21:44He says Tapia may not have
21:45taken the butt-kicking
21:46that he wants to
21:47in order to retire,
21:48but he took a good enough
21:49look into it
21:49to get beat twice.
21:51Ayala said Tapia
21:52is coddled, babied.
21:54In reality,
21:55said Ayala,
21:55Tapia didn't want to fight him.
21:57Strong words
21:57about Tapia from Ayala
21:59who also said
22:00Gomez is stronger.
22:02Tapia can't hurt him.
22:03He'll run like he fought
22:04the second time with me.
22:06He'll rub his head
22:07and complain to the ref
22:08like he always does.
22:09Interesting stuff
22:10from Paulie Ayala.
22:12Well, the first fight
22:12with Ayala and Tapia
22:14I thought was so close
22:15could have gone either way.
22:15The second fight,
22:16I thought, Johnny,
22:17whether you like it or not,
22:18outboxed him
22:19doing some running,
22:20but Muhammad Ali
22:20won several world titles
22:21doing the same thing.
22:22Johnny Tapia there
22:23with Jesse Reed
22:24who says that
22:25even though he's moved up
22:26in weight,
22:27this is the best
22:27he has seen,
22:29Johnny Tapia.
22:30I'm going to find
22:30that a little hard to believe
22:31so I'm going to reserve
22:32judging until after.
22:34We enter round five
22:35of this super batomweight
22:37ten router.
22:39Stop holding, Ryder.
22:40Come on, Fox.
22:48Loewy's been cautioned
22:49for headbutts,
22:51for rabbit punches.
22:54Larios for holding
22:55and hitting.
22:57When Loewy comes forward,
22:58he's much more effective
22:59than when Larios
23:00is coming forward.
23:00and both fighters
23:02are trying to establish
23:03the offensive mode,
23:04but give and take
23:05a little here,
23:06a little there.
23:06You notice Larios
23:07tapping his head,
23:08complaining that
23:09he's being headbutted.
23:10Break this in, Oscar.
23:11Fox.
23:15John, you got to
23:16let go of the arm.
23:17Break!
23:17Break!
23:18Right here.
23:19Fuck.
23:23Loewy's trying
23:24every trick in the book
23:25here.
23:25He's holding.
23:25In the head, John.
23:27Break!
23:28Break!
23:29Rosales takes
23:31a long look
23:32at Loewy.
23:36Larios is leaping
23:37with the right hand
23:37or the left hook
23:38and even uppercuts.
23:39Loewy has to do
23:39is working behind
23:40that jab.
23:40Stuff a stiff jab.
23:42Push Loewy back.
23:43Stick his head,
23:44maybe get it up in here
23:45and then fire back.
23:46Loewy continues
23:47to hold and hit
23:48and gets warned
23:48by Tony Rosales.
23:49He hasn't had any points
23:50deducted as of yet.
23:51Yeah!
23:52Yeah!
23:53Yeah!
23:53Yeah!
23:53Yeah!
23:54Yeah!
23:54Yeah!
23:56Yeah!
23:57Yeah!
23:57Yeah!
23:57Yeah!
23:58Larios winging.
23:59That left hand
24:00got in
24:00on the chin
24:01of Loewy.
24:08Larios more or less
24:10on his toes.
24:11Loewy flat-footed.
24:12There's a whipping left.
24:14The right hand
24:15was partially blocked
24:15and so was the hook
24:16but they both
24:17threw the glove
24:18and snapped Loewy's head
24:18back.
24:19They landed well.
24:20Larios pounding
24:22to the body of Loewy.
24:23Now he goes upstairs.
24:25A right hand
24:25to the head.
24:27Oh, there comes the head
24:30again of Loewy
24:31in on Larios
24:32complaining to
24:33Tony Rosales.
24:36Now Larios
24:37using the jab
24:38and then
24:39sneaking in
24:40a straight right hand.
24:42It's a nice,
24:42sharp lead right hand
24:43by Larios
24:44and to, uh,
24:45to throw his credit,
24:47he's kind of taking
24:48those punches pretty well
24:48but when he comes in,
24:50he's a shorter guy.
24:51He's going to be
24:51lower with his head.
24:52I don't really
24:53see any potential
24:54headbutting except
24:55in the corner
24:55a little bit before.
24:58Well, he hasn't,
24:59uh, drawn blood.
25:03Larios stepping it up.
25:05Uh-oh.
25:07Now he's complaining
25:08either a headbutt
25:10or a rabbit punch.
25:11He's complaining
25:11about a rabbit punch
25:12but I'll tell you what,
25:13I thought that one
25:13landed a little more
25:14on top of the head
25:14than it did behind you.
25:16Larios doing a lot
25:17of complaining.
25:23Break, break, break.
25:27Time.
25:30So we are
25:31halfway through.
25:33This has been
25:33an awkward fight.
25:35Mostly because
25:36of this man,
25:37John Lowy.
25:38Listen to me.
25:38Deep breath, deep breath,
25:40deep breath.
25:41Okay, listen to me.
25:42He's getting tired.
25:43As we take you
25:44inside the ropes
25:45to get a
25:46a further look
25:47at what's been
25:48going on here.
25:56There's a little bit
25:57of the head work
25:57on the inside
25:58by Lowy
25:59and some constant
26:01complaining
26:02hitting on the break.
26:03You know what?
26:05There's a little bit
26:05of a shove,
26:06a little shoulder.
26:08Again,
26:08hitting behind the head.
26:10So last time
26:11I'm going to warn you
26:11for the rabbit punches.
26:12You see the referee warning.
26:13And you can hear him
26:15as well
26:16as he's mic'd.
26:18John Lowy
26:19with all kinds
26:20of roughhouse tactics.
26:24Larius can make
26:25this fight
26:25so much easier, Steve.
26:26If you just work
26:26the right hand.
26:28Double, triple jab,
26:29straight right hand.
26:30Instead of winging
26:30his big left hooks
26:31and right overhand
26:32right to his telegraph.
26:34See, again,
26:34he leads with a hook
26:35instead of the straight jab.
26:36He's just way there.
26:37Straight punch.
26:37So he's taking
26:40the circuitous route
26:41when he could be
26:42taking a shortcut
26:42to victory.
26:43I completely agree.
26:45Oscar Larios.
26:51He has been stopped
26:52twice in his three defeats.
26:54Break, break, break, break.
26:57Lowy was something
26:58called the IBO
26:59122-pound champion
27:01and his only
27:02world title shot
27:03lost to Eric Morales,
27:04TKO 8.
27:05He is unrated.
27:09Larios is number two.
27:14Michael Brody
27:15is number one.
27:16The champ is
27:17Willie Horin
27:17of Sacramento
27:18who beat Larios
27:21in a disputed decision.
27:26Larios just seems
27:27intent on firing
27:29a big one
27:29from the outside
27:30not working
27:30his way behind
27:31the jabbing
27:31combinations.
27:32He gets set up
27:33so much more
27:33readily with a jab.
27:35You step in
27:36behind the two
27:36or three,
27:36push Lowy back,
27:37get him all
27:37bounce,
27:38and then fire
27:38the big stuff.
27:39And you're just
27:40going to do it.
27:41The head's coming
27:41together there.
27:42Ball counter.
27:43Come on, fighter.
27:44Back.
27:44Buddy, John.
27:45Buddy.
27:51Lowy going with the jab,
27:53doubling, tripling up,
27:55but nothing after that.
27:59Just getting in and out.
28:00As you look at it,
28:02the flip side of the coin,
28:03if Lowy jabs a little
28:04better, he takes
28:05Larios completely
28:06out of his game, too,
28:07and gets in and scores.
28:08The jab key for both
28:09fighters, but they're
28:10all looking for big bombs.
28:12Lowy, a scrappy guy.
28:16Continues to walk
28:17into punches.
28:20Their punches
28:21simultaneously
28:22met in midair.
28:23Larios missing with that
28:29and then trying
28:29a backhand move,
28:30which is illegal,
28:31but he didn't strike him.
28:35Larios with the left,
28:36or Lowy with a left
28:37cross to the head
28:38of Larios.
28:41The heads came together.
28:43This time it was Larios
28:44who came forward
28:45and bunted Lowy.
28:47And you know,
28:47again, the bull being
28:48a little bit wild,
28:49Stephen, the heads
28:49are just out there.
28:50It's part of the body
28:51and it's in motion
28:52as they throw
28:52their bodies forward
28:53with the punches
28:54and they're just clashing.
28:55I'll say one thing
28:56with all this colliding
28:57of heads,
28:58they're not leaders.
29:00Nobody's cutting,
29:01nobody's even really swollen.
29:06Right hand got in
29:07by Larios,
29:08but not that much
29:08behind it.
29:13Looks like it's going
29:13to take an awful lot
29:14to put this kid
29:16on the floor
29:17on the unusual
29:19red canvas.
29:21I don't think
29:21I've ever seen
29:22anything like this before
29:23and no logos
29:24or advertisements
29:25on them.
29:26That's really rare.
29:27That's like
29:28old-time boxing.
29:30Round six
29:31of the books.
29:35How do you feel?
29:38Okay.
29:39I feel great.
29:41Listen up.
29:41legs,
29:42legs, hands,
29:44how's it going?
29:45How's it going?
29:45How's it going?
29:50Remember,
29:51don't expose yourself
29:52to this.
29:52They're dangerous.
29:53Okay.
29:53Okay.
29:54We'll see the heads clash.
30:08It's not,
30:09it's just an accident.
30:10There's nothing
30:11deliberate about that.
30:13We'll take another look
30:14from overhead.
30:15They're both coming in
30:16looking to punch
30:16and they're swinging
30:17around each other
30:17and there.
30:19That's just
30:19clearly not deliberate
30:20by either fighter.
30:24Bobby,
30:25we're beyond
30:25the halfway point,
30:26but I'd be curious
30:27to hear your
30:28unofficial scoring.
30:30Well,
30:30I'll tell you what,
30:30I think that right now
30:31Larios has dictated
30:33the pace for the most part.
30:34Five rounds to one.
30:35I just don't see that
30:37Lowy's been real effective.
30:38He's starting to make
30:39nice little moves
30:40like this
30:41and coming back
30:41a little bit.
30:42When he pushes
30:43Larios back,
30:43he scores,
30:44but Larios has been
30:45the aggressor.
30:45He's been forcing
30:46the fight
30:47and landing
30:47the bigger shots.
30:49And here goes Larios
30:51pumping lefts
30:52and rights
30:52to the head of Lowy
30:53and Lowy up
30:54against the ropes.
30:57He rattles off
30:58a salvo
30:58to the midsection
31:00himself.
31:04Now,
31:04if that was part
31:05of Lowy's strategy,
31:06it was odd strategy
31:07just to sit there
31:08and take that.
31:12That's it,
31:13Donnie.
31:13That was the last
31:13warning.
31:14But he didn't
31:15fall there in the show.
31:16Well, you heard
31:17Tony Rosales
31:17going back
31:18to the head.
31:20He's taking a point
31:21away.
31:22It may be academic,
31:24but taking a point
31:24from John Lowy
31:25hitting behind the head
31:26once again.
31:26He had warned him
31:27several times
31:28and finally he had
31:29seen enough
31:29so he deducts a point.
31:35And Lowy now
31:36missing with the right
31:39hand.
31:39Larios brimming
31:40with confidence,
31:41dancing around.
31:42showing his footwork
31:45but that's not
31:48really Larios' fight.
31:50Now he's got
31:50a little bit
31:51of a cushion
31:51at least in the round.
31:52So even if he loses
31:53the round,
31:53it's an even round
31:54but that's not
31:55the way to view it.
31:56Go after him
31:56and do what's been
31:57working.
32:00Good job, fighter.
32:01Box out, box out.
32:02Don't hold.
32:02Box out.
32:03Break, break, break.
32:04Box.
32:05Well, what we have
32:17seen here
32:17is a better
32:18skilled fighter
32:19in Oscar Larios.
32:20A lot of fouling
32:22by John Lowy
32:22and retaliation
32:23by Larios
32:24who just
32:25made Lowy pay
32:27when he missed.
32:27I'm not sure
32:33anyone's stock's
32:33going to skyrocket
32:34off a win here.
32:36Either fighter
32:37looking very impressive.
32:38Pretty good right
32:39hand there
32:39by Larios.
32:43But at the end
32:44of the fight
32:44you would venture
32:46to guess
32:46and Larios
32:46would probably say
32:47that the awkward
32:48style of Lowy
32:49was the cause.
32:52But Lowy has
32:53a pretty tight defense.
32:54If you watch him
32:55close to any inside
32:55he keeps his hands
32:56really tight to his jaw.
32:58Hides his head
32:59pretty well
32:59and really blocks
33:00punches well.
33:01Doesn't slip so much
33:02but blocks quite well.
33:08Couple that
33:09with the fact
33:09that Larios
33:10is showing him
33:10almost everything
33:11he's throwing
33:11and he
33:13is using the defense.
33:14And you notice
33:15from time to time
33:15Larios
33:16swings very widely
33:18with that right hand
33:19and I'm just
33:20a little surprised
33:20that Lowy
33:21doesn't try
33:22to take advantage
33:22of that
33:22and come down
33:23the middle.
33:24I think he's too
33:24worried about
33:24getting hit with it
33:25rather than firing
33:26down the middle
33:27beating to the punch.
33:37Watch that head.
33:39Coming out loud.
33:43Every time
33:43he leaves on his head
33:44I want you popping up
33:45that up
33:45because just rock back.
33:46He leans in on his head
33:47I want you to rock back.
33:48Bring it straight up.
33:49Okay.
33:50Just pivot it in.
33:50Okay.
33:52Come on.
33:53Breathe.
33:54There you go.
33:56No, we're okay.
33:57Okay.
33:58Just pop it up.
33:59Pop it up.
33:59I want you to go back
34:00to your jab
34:01and your body shots
34:01too.
34:02We need to work
34:02a lot of body shots.
34:04The referee
34:05after having warned
34:06Lowy a few times
34:07wasn't going to stand
34:08for it anymore
34:09behind the head.
34:10He took charge.
34:11It wasn't a lot.
34:12It was just one little shot.
34:13Just one little tap
34:17behind the head.
34:20Okay, John.
34:21You need to stay busy
34:22with this guy, okay?
34:23Stay busy or stay busy.
34:23Might have been a little
34:24quick there, Steve.
34:27Well, Lowy's trainer
34:28James Myers
34:29telling Lowy
34:30next time
34:31Larios comes in
34:32with his head
34:33just popped
34:34with an uppercut.
34:36Even though it's been
34:37Lowy mostly coming
34:38in with the head.
34:39We hit round eight.
34:43Lowy's never been
34:44past the eighth round.
34:48He's got a funny feeling
34:49he's going to be
34:50past the eighth round
34:50tonight.
34:54Former National
34:56Irish Champion
34:56at 117 pounds.
35:03Break, break, break.
35:05Step back.
35:06It's amazing to me
35:06how wide
35:07Larios throws all
35:09of his punches
35:09very rarely.
35:10I mean, once in a while
35:11you'll see a straight
35:11right hand down the middle.
35:12Break, step back.
35:12The uppercuts are looped.
35:14Hooks are looped
35:15to head and body.
35:16Right hand's looped
35:17over the top
35:17and around.
35:19Is there a possibility
35:20that Larios
35:21is suffering
35:23a letdown
35:24coming off
35:24the disputed decision
35:26with the
35:26Willie Horan?
35:29I mean,
35:29should a number two
35:30contender
35:31be having his way
35:33more with an
35:33unrated fighter
35:34like Lowy?
35:35A journeyman fighter?
35:36Well, certain
35:36journeyman fighters
35:37Steve are just
35:38their styles
35:38are just going
35:38to make it difficult
35:39to look.
35:39But there are certain
35:40southpaws that can
35:41make anybody look bad.
35:42But this is an awkward
35:43style that Lowy has
35:44and I think Larios' style
35:46suits up with it
35:47that it makes
35:48for not the greatest
35:49of fights.
35:50You can hear
35:50some of the bluebirds.
35:52Lowy has a real
35:53tight defense
35:53on the inside.
35:54Oh, big right uppercut.
35:55Larios!
35:56Larios got stuck
35:57out of nowhere!
35:59And he's hanging on!
36:00He's in trouble, Steve.
36:01He is not completely there.
36:04He's a big right uppercut.
36:05A right hand by John Lowy
36:07and back comes a left hook
36:08by Larios, who's trying
36:10to regroup now
36:11and get a second win.
36:12But he was rocked
36:14and staggered.
36:16Lowy, let's see what
36:18he can do from this point on.
36:20Lowy with a right uppercut.
36:22Trying the same punch
36:23that got him there.
36:25Watch your head, fighter.
36:26Larios almost crumbled,
36:31almost went down.
36:33He buckled,
36:35but he hung on.
36:35And Lowy does not appear
36:36to be a big puncher
36:37at all, Steve,
36:38so I'm pretty sure
36:39Larios not only
36:40didn't see that punch,
36:41but it landed perfect.
36:44Anxious moments
36:45for number two contender
36:46Oscar Larios.
36:47Now he's whaling away.
36:49Left-right combination,
36:51another left-right combo
36:52to the head of Lowy,
36:53who hangs on.
36:54So Larios recuperating well.
37:02I think more embarrassed
37:04than anything
37:04over what just transpired
37:06here in round eight.
37:11Now he seems to have
37:12gotten his legs back
37:12and he nails it
37:13with a big right hand,
37:14Larios.
37:15Always trying to sit on
37:16him with the same right uppercut,
37:17but I think it was just
37:18the perfect situation
37:19when he threw it back.
37:20He's not going to be able
37:20to lay for that too easy.
37:22Final seconds,
37:23round eight.
37:24See,
37:24you see him forcing
37:25that right uppercut.
37:27Step back.
37:27In a round in which
37:28the number two contender,
37:30Oscar Larios,
37:31in the white trunks,
37:33nearly was dropped.
37:36Are you okay now?
37:40Is everything okay with you?
37:42Are you back?
37:43You don't have to expose yourself.
37:46You don't have to expose yourself.
37:47You don't have to expose yourself.
37:48You don't have to expose yourself.
37:50You keep on doing things
37:51that you don't need to do.
37:54Try to keep the distance.
37:57Separate the position.
37:58He wants to give you
37:59a good uppercut.
38:00Make this easy for yourself.
38:05Take some.
38:06Breathe.
38:07I will land that right uppercut.
38:15He sits back
38:16and sort of rocks out
38:17and comes right underneath.
38:18Right there.
38:19Just right underneath.
38:20Perfectly timed shot.
38:21Right on the button,
38:23and I'm pretty sure
38:23Larios never saw it,
38:24but he recoups
38:25and recoups
38:26and comes back,
38:27firing right hands,
38:28straight right hands getting home.
38:30Not looping.
38:31Straight right hand again
38:31and a hook finished around very well and it's round nine is the farthest john lowey has ever
38:40gone in his 29th fight professional career larios who typically is an intelligent fighter as you
38:48can hear in the corner being told he's not doing the right thing he's not fighting a smart fight
38:54right here jose reynoso in the corner of larios oh a good right hand and caught it up by the left by
39:04larios nice combination here it is again one two three the combinations when thrown succinctly will
39:10work they're one at a time big looping shot another looping shot not going to get the job done larios
39:18who seems to be way ahead of the point column nearly got a scare of a lifetime in the last round on a
39:26right uppercut by lowey that's staggering bobby you pointed out he just never saw it coming
39:37the lowly threw right up the middle as larios was leaving himself wide open and bang
39:42that really woke up this crowd waiting for johnny tapia later in the main event
39:55this is the appetizer to the main course
40:00midway through the night scheduled for 10. it's a non-title super fan of white foul
40:06overhead right that got in by a slight little buckle in the legs of lowey that time
40:10but he bounced back right away see what kind of condition low he's in going this far for the first
40:15time
40:19now he's being backed into the corner just near us here he's just being at work round after
40:24round a couple of rounds that he won a couple of good punches and sequences but just being out work
40:29every single round larios is not showing me as much as i expected from him tonight
40:33i agree with that same here especially coming off the very impressive performance against willie
40:45which he outworked and out hustled her in but yet lost the fight on points all three judges had
40:50at 115 to 113 in sacramento which is horrid's home right hand there that's stunning lowey that sent him
40:59back for a second but then he comes right back back towards lario he is really a tough durable kid
41:04with a good chin low and again a straight right hand steve going right down the middle here there
41:07you saw it again it's so effective why does he loop go back to looping punches
41:16big big step back here's that awkward style again of loey causing some difficulty for larios
41:21and around nine
41:29loey just backpedals and he might as well take a seat
41:33put it back to his corner on purpose steve just because he knew he was going to get the rest save
41:36a little time tell you a funny story when i was fighting for my second world title against robert
41:40daniels yeah i did the same thing i made her hope the stool was there when no and i heard the clicker
41:45i worked my way around to my corner so he had the long walk back and i could just sit down
41:50in the back double jab but i want i want solid shots okay sweet all right good job good job baby
42:17you're looking good out there john championship round time you have you have the power to hurt him
42:22you have the power to hurt him
42:30well you heard the larios corner he said that guy's trying to take you out
42:33as they touch gloves if loey has any ideas of upsetting larios he's going to have to take him out
42:41step back punch out better go home 10th and final round
42:47larios apparently well ahead on the cards i would think so
43:00hey break step back he's banged heads right here he's got to watch the head come on again
43:03come on john there's just oh there's blood now over the right eyebrow excuse me bobby of john lowey
43:09and there's nobody really trying to do that here this is just awkwardness flashing with awkwardness
43:14with all the collisions of heads this is the first time you see loey stepping up the urgency now
43:21with the blood flowing into his right eye it's in a bad spot it's a it's an awful cut and he's bleeding
43:27profusely just dripping down from the head and a right hand by larios look at the face now of loey it
43:35took to the last round the 10th round for blood there had not been any blood up till now
43:44despite all the head clashing
43:47break break step back step back with a sense of urgency larios is fighting the last round
43:55as if that's true he's got the fight in the bag the only thing he needs to do to win to stay on his
43:59feet that's how he's fighting careful moving carefully there's a sense of urgency anyway for
44:06lowe who had to knock looks like he has to knock him out the right hand by larios it's now target
44:12practice as that face gets messier he's in a bad place
44:18oh he's doing some talking again he back pedals into the corner almost on purpose he not only
44:26backpedaled into the corner on purpose he looked to find the corner yes he looked over both shoulders
44:31and makes right exactly where i'm at not sure what that means now he's inviting larios in
44:37not the greatest strategy i think he's just hoping and praying he can catch him leaping in one of those
44:42punches hurt him again but it just doesn't seem like he has much he is a tough kid he's got the crowd
44:52behind him now bloody face battered john lowey eats some more leather with a straight right hand by larios
45:0330 seconds and counting in round 10 the last round
45:11lowey going to the jab let's see if he follows it up with the right hand missing with a wild left hook
45:18i think it's all academic now
45:20lowey needed more than the luck of the iris another right hand by larios
45:36and this one in the books
45:37number two wbc super bantamweight contender oscar larios
45:49from guadalajara mexico got a little bit of a scare from john lowey in the eighth round with a
45:53right uppercut that nearly sent him down and let him come in with his head all night long and there
45:57is the bloodied and battered face of john lowey
46:02a lot of headbutt
46:05a lot of roughhouse tactics by both
46:10he's rated number one number two in the world
46:13i'm an old man of 34. i could show him what i could do like a young man tonight baby
46:21california you heard the words of john lowey what is he rated number two i'm 34
46:26he's rated number four showed what an old man can do
46:33he fought a smart fight based on his style and his limitations his lack of real power
46:38and i think he showed that he was very worried about going the distance because he was never
46:42overly active he never let it all hang out didn't he was just at work did not work hard
46:46enough to win a lot of rounds that were very close even though it appears as if larios is going
46:50to win this on point bobby does his stock go down
46:55in my eyes uh humbly speaking i would say it does i don't think he put on a performance that was
47:00expected of him tonight i think they expected him to really go out there and take down as in his own
47:05words lowey put an old man and break him down and beat him down his better skills laros he's 10 years
47:10younger strength the youth experience all that's on his side yet he didn't do an awful lot he wasn't
47:15commanding with his performance and he was the only one that was ever in serious trouble big question
47:20so the judges will take it from here jim bankshaw larry chavez and russell moore all from albuquerque new
47:27mexico and it's taking quite a long time for them to uh total things up i don't like that
47:35good job guys that usually results in controversy but not all the time we'll see what happens here
47:41a couple more rounds sean that's all we need a couple more rounds baby
47:45here's going he's tired he's tired
47:48and don't forget coming up next is our main event
47:53johnny tapia versus famacito gomez in a super vantamweight bout we take you into the dressing room
48:02of both tapia and gomez happy with his highly energetic emotional demeanor in and out of the
48:08ring wildly popular here the fans will be very vocal surviving an extremely rough early life the
48:14murder of his mother still fighting the demons of depression from time to time and tonight he faces
48:19famacito gomez who provided anxious moments for future world champs jorge julio and paulie ayala back
48:24to back in 96 and 97. still though not considered a major threat to tapia
48:34johnny tapia famacito gomez coming up next in our main event from albuquerque
48:38and it looks like we're set for the decision we send it up to our ring announcer jimmy lennon jr
48:49ladies and gentlemen after 10 rounds of action we have a unanimous decision here are the score totals
48:55our judge ringside jim bankshaw scores about 98 to 93 judge russell mora sees it 99 to 90. judge
49:03larry chavez scores about 100 to 92 all three in favor of the winner oscar chalolo
49:15as expected oscar larios wins it in rather convincing fashion one guy had it 192 larry chavez a big
49:23disparity so no surprise as far as the final outcome was concerned the funny thing 192 means
49:30he had to score three of the rounds of draw because of the point taken off yeah 100 to 90 would win all
49:3510. to get 100 you got to get it you know i mean so that's not scoring i mean i had it 98 91 but
49:4198 93 192 and 99 90 were the official ringside judges let's get it up to tim smith tim steve steve the
49:50lucky charm was not with the irishman tonight oscar larios knocked the shamrocks off
49:56and uh oscar did the awkwardness him coming in with the head the dirtiness of the fight did that
50:02present any problems for you tonight the president of un problema el estilo de él el estilo rarísimo
50:29también abrió eric dos veces it was a very difficult fight uh basically he fought with his head forward
50:35looking for a headbutt eric morales uh was another victim of that headbutt it was very hard for him but he
50:41was able to put this pull this through now you took a big shot from a right hand right uppercut in
50:46the eighth round and it looked like you're really staggered that you might be out of it how hurt were
50:52you when you took that shot well in a lot of assault that they would offer cut y parecias que te
50:57vas a caer que pasó que te pudiste mantener de pie así bueno yo creo que la la condición porque yo
51:05venía muy bien preparado y yo quería noquearlo le repito quiero verme contundente porque quiero
51:09y trasferring he wants he said that he was prepared for this fight he prepared very very well
51:14and he was he had in his mind that he wants to be a champ so did the punch hurt him though
51:19te dolió senti que que me lastimo pero pero no perdí el conocimiento lo veía bien y todo
51:26por eso no me dejé caer i didn't get dizzy but it was definitely hurt me a lot now what's next for
51:30you where do you go from here was it a spectacular enough performance to put you in the hunt for
51:34another title bueno fue tan espectacular este evento para ti que ahora tienes futuros ya planes
51:41la verdad no porque yo quiero verme como un campeón porque yo me siento el campeón del mundo y quería
51:46verme un peleador contundente i want to feel like i'm the champ of the world i don't have any plans
51:51right now but i feel good all right that's it that's he he bets on himself okay a man who's betting on
52:01himself maybe not a big step steve but a baby step to another world title shot for oscar larios all
52:09right tim uh yeah larios going to 43 and 1 lowey slips to 27 and 3. uh he said he's been told larios
52:16that if he won here tonight he'd get to fight the winner of horian brody in june for the wbc
52:21super bantamweight title but the baby steps indeed not an impressive victory over a journeyman 34 years
