00:00you could sense the frustration with the defensive players after the game
00:05yesterday. And, you know, they weren't saying it.
00:10Some of them didn't talk to us. Some of them that did,
00:13they were kind of dancing around the fact that they feel that they were in the
00:17right positions, that the coaching isn't good.
00:19So I think that probably contributed to it.
00:21I have a feeling Aaron Glenn might've heard from some players, you know,
00:24after the game, during the game and, and realized that, you know,
00:28that was a problem too.
00:30Hello, and welcome to Gangs All Here. My name is Ryan Sampson.
00:33That's our Jets beat writer, Brian Costello. Today is Monday, December 15th.
00:36The Jets are coming off a 48-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
00:40However, we just got breaking news that Aaron Glenn has relieved defensive
00:44coordinator, Steve Wilks, of his responsibilities as the coordinator and fired
00:48him essentially from the team. And we're here to discuss it with Brian Costello.
00:51Cos, just give me your honest, instant reaction of the news for Steve Wilks
00:57being fired. Yeah, I'm a little surprised. Aaron Glenn did it with three games
01:01left. I thought this was inevitable at the end of the season. You know, it's funny.
01:06A few of us were talking about it Saturday night. Just, you know, do you think he
01:11would do something before the end of the season? And it's kind of like, no, but then
01:14watching yesterday's game and the points are just rolling up and it looks so easy for
01:19the Jaguars. And I understand they're a good team, their playoff team, but it just
01:24looked way too easy. So I started thinking, you know, this could happen, but I'm still
01:29a little surprised that, you know, at three games left, you know, not sure what, not
01:35sure what the move does at this point, but maybe he wants to get a look at Chris
01:38Harris calling plays. So he gets that done. I'll also say this, Ryan, you could sense
01:45the frustration with the defensive players after the game yesterday. And, you know, they
01:54weren't saying it. Some of them didn't talk to us. Some of them did. They were kind of
01:58dancing around the fact that they feel that they were in the right positions, that the
02:03coaching isn't good. So I think that probably contributed to it. I have a feeling Aaron Glenn
02:08might've heard from some players, you know, after the game, during the game and, and
02:11realized that, you know, that was a problem too.
02:14Well, that's interesting cause that you say that from the player's perspective. Uh, you
02:17know, I think yesterday when I was, when we were doing the post game show with Frankie,
02:20I had, I had said, I go, that's a fireable offensive game from, from Steve Wilk, just
02:26because of how poor the defensive played. But when I saw your tweets and everyone else's
02:30tweets about how the players aren't really speaking after the game, it's like the writing
02:34seems like it's on the wall. So I guess that is that really it though? Like just the players
02:40are fed up and that's why Aaron Glenn would make a decision like that or no, no, I don't
02:44think that's the reason. Yeah. I think it all goes in. I mean, here's the, here's the question
02:48to ask yourself, Ryan, as you watch all these games, what did the jets do well defensively?
02:53Nothing, man. Nothing. They don't tackle very well. Nope. They don't stop the run.
02:58Nope. They don't rush the passer. Nope. They don't, there's guys running open in the secondary.
03:04We know they don't force takeaways. Nope. So like they have nothing that they can hang
03:09their hat on. Um, and even individual performances have gotten worse too. Yeah. Which is tough.
03:15And you know, this defense, this defense was good. 2022, 2023, but you know, last year took
03:22a little step back, but it wasn't a terrible defense last year. They were, they hadn't, they
03:27had some bad moments at ends of games and things, but they, they weren't getting destroyed every
03:30week. This defense this year, you know, in the beginning of the year was awful. Seems to stabilize
03:35a little bit in the middle of the year. And now it's been terrible again, uh, in recent weeks. So,
03:41uh, you know, I think, I think Aaron Glenn just probably looked at it and said, you know, he knew
03:46he was going to make the move after the season. This gives Chris, Chris Harris a chance. Maybe Chris
03:50Harris will be considered for the job full time and it gives him a chance to call plays.
03:54Yeah. Uh, you know, be interested to see if this defense could even take slightly marginal
03:59steps of being better compared to what was under Steve Wilks, but the, the Steve Wilks hiring cause
04:04we had discussed this so many times this year, seeing the team struggle defensively of why did
04:10Aaron Glenn pick Steve Wilks? Was it just because he had previous experience as a head coach? Because
04:15we know that that's always a question. I think media and fans ask themselves when a new head
04:21coach, a rookie head coach assembles his staff for the first time, how much experience does he want
04:26on that, on that staff? And Steve Wilks was really the only guy that he picked that had experience as
04:32a head coach and had a ton of experience calling defense. So did you, do you question the hiring now
04:38of like, really was that worth it? Because we've seen how much Wilks has struggled even as a defensive
04:42coordinator recently? Yeah. Well, he fired him 14 games in. So I think that there was a mistake to
04:48hire him. Uh, I, I don't know exactly what his reasoning was. Uh, you know, yeah, I, I get the,
04:55the former head coach thing and Aaron Glenn is not young though, Ryan, like he's 53 years old.
05:01He's a, has a lot of experience coach player. Like it's not like, you know, the classic example is
05:06Sean McVay, right? When he got the head coach job with the Rams, he hired Wade Phillips as a defensive
05:10coordinator, but he was really young. And I think Aaron Glenn, I don't think he needs someone to lean
05:15on for, for advice or anything as a head coach. So to me, it was more, I think he chose them because
05:22of his defense. And I think he, he trusted them. Um, it was a little weird because they never worked
05:27together, but if you talk to coaches, Ryan, who talk about their, their becoming a head coach,
05:34hiring a staff is the hardest thing to do. And it's, if you like, just put yourself in that world,
05:42right? You're interviewing all over the place. Aaron Glenn interviewed with like how many teams,
05:47four or five teams. Yeah. And then he's preparing for a playoff game with the lions still. And you're
05:53trying to assemble a staff, but so is Mike Rabel. And so is Kellen Moore. And so is Pete Carroll.
05:58Like, so you're fighting for maybe the same guys.
06:00As is his Ben Johnson, his other coach that was on the same staff with the lions. Yeah.
06:04And you, and the lions will probably, the lions, like usually the teams will say like,
06:08you can take two guys with you, you know, or sorry. And he took Tanner Angstrang with them,
06:12you know, but they, they don't want you raiding. You can't take everybody with you. So
06:15now you're now there's only so many guys, you know, and so many guys you like. So
06:19it's hard. And I think guys make mistakes a lot of times when they hire staff. So
06:26I do give Aaron Glenn credit here. He didn't dig in and go, you know,
06:29Oh no, no, we're going to fix this with Steve Wilkes. He acknowledged the mistake and moved
06:34on. So that's a credit to him because, you know, now he can kind of sit back and evaluate
06:40the landscape, see who's out there. Maybe it's Chris Harris from an internally, or maybe
06:44he goes outside, but we, you know, it's funny. We talked about the Detroit thing so much
06:48and the lions fired Anthony Lynn at the end of the first year with Dan Campbell and they
06:52put Ben Johnson in there. And now that, that worked out. So we'll see if, if the jets have
06:57similar luck in the, in that regard. Yeah. Uh, look, the jets were giving up the third
07:02most points in the NFL, uh, to opponents yardage obviously is high up there. They didn't turn
07:08the ball over at all. Like you said, cause they were horrible against play action again
07:12yesterday. Trevor Lawrence, five touchdown passes, well over 300 yards passing. Uh, I think
07:17that this, the thing that struck that I have an issue with is like you said, though, there's
07:22nothing they do well. So I don't know if there's going to be much positives going to these
07:26last three games that they can show signs of improvement. Let's talk candidates though.
07:31I mean, is there outside hires that you maybe think Aaron Gleick could even be start circling
07:35the, Hey, you know what? Maybe this is an up and comer that, you know, the jets could look
07:40to hire as a defense corner. Cause I feel like cause and hear me out here. I feel like they
07:44need to go a little bit younger. Someone that's more aggressive, someone that can, and can relate
07:48to the players more. I feel like, uh, am I, am I wrong in thinking that way for how the
07:53jets should look for the next defensive coordinator? Yeah. I just hire a good coach,
07:57right? Like I, I don't know, younger, older, whatever, you know, and Chris Harris is pretty
08:01well respected. Um, obviously the secondary hasn't performed very well this year, but
08:07well, he, what he does have a good reputation. So I think he's the internal candidate. I know
08:11Jim Leonard will be a popular name, which that's fans obviously, cause of his history here.
08:16Uh, so we'll see there, but no, I, I don't really know yet, Ryan, who they would be looking
08:20in. Obviously this is really fresh. Yeah. It's really fresh. I think, um, you know,
08:25I always draw back, you know, cleanse connections from Sean Payton. Is there someone from the
08:29Broncos defensive staff? He could look at potentially, uh, he had, you know, from his
08:34days of the saints lions, obviously hit connections there, but, uh, definitely a hole that's going
08:39to be needed, but also thingy talent, right? Cause like, tell me, talk about, talk to me about
08:44yesterday, your sense. Obviously we, we know how bad the defense was, but this team is just
08:50devoid of so much talent on the defensive side of the ball. Yeah. They're going to have
08:54to load up on a lot of players there. Yeah. They need a lot of players. You know, I think
08:58if you look at it, they need another edge rusher because Jermaine and will just aren't having
09:03a lot of impact. So I think you need a third edge rusher. It'll be like, maybe they get
09:06a Bryce Hoff type. That is like a guy off the bench that can impact the game. Uh, I think
09:11you're looking at one starting linebacker for sure. Cause I don't think Quincy will be
09:15back. Um, you know, I think you're looking at two safeties possibly, uh, depending on
09:21how they feel about Malachi Moore going into next year, but yeah, they need a lot. I, again,
09:26this, this isn't all on Steve Wilkes, right? Like he, he gets a lot of the blame, but it
09:30isn't all on him. The, the, the talent just hasn't, what we think is talent, we're talented
09:36players just haven't performed that well this season. And then there's other spots where
09:40they're, they're just hurting. Yeah. Uh, they're hurting. Jets fans are hurting after watching
09:45that performance again, yesterday, Frankie and I were texting, uh, cause just give you
09:48a heads up. Frankie text me at the first quarter. He goes, I am truly battling my remote right
09:53now on changing the channel because so you called it, man. I don't blame like it just, I, I know
10:02this sounds like hyperbole cause I'm, I'm looking at it in a, in a closed lens just for the season.
10:07But honestly, this is one of the most depressing seasons I think I've ever watched as a Jets
10:12fan for this team. Yeah. Well like here, here's the thing, Ryan, I don't even know if this is
10:17really registering with people. Like if they finished with 14 losses, which looks like could
10:22happen, it was the last three games. That's only happened twice before a Jets history, right?
10:28The 1996 one in 15 season and 2022 and 14 season. So like you're, you're in the conversation
10:36for worst season in Jets history right now, which that's not good. And those were the
10:41end of coaching 10 years, right? Like rich Koteik got five 96 gates got fired 2020. This
10:47is the beginning for Aaron Glenn, but this is, you know, if they don't want another game
10:50three and 14 is going to be one of the worst records in the history of the organization.
10:54So, and there's been plenty of bad, as you know, there's been plenty of bad records in
10:59the history of the organization. So that's saying something.
11:01It's saying something and this season cannot end quick enough because we appreciate you
11:06as always hopping on here, discussing the Steve Wilkes firing and we'll catch up with
11:10you later this week. Thank you, man. All right. Thanks, Ryan.
