00:00Yeah, well, I get so excited about Giving Tuesday, it's truly one of my favorite days
00:09of the year.
00:10And I think we can all agree that the holidays get a bit nuts.
00:14They're stressful, everyone's running around, trying to do all the things, trying to get
00:18to all the parties, trying to make sure the family's happy, and it feels like a lot.
00:22And Giving Tuesday's a really nice day to just be reminded that the holidays are about
00:29family, about giving, about community, about coming together.
00:34And I think there's really no better way to take all of that energy and that love and
00:39come together for the people around you.
00:41And so to be part of an initiative that's raising money for charity like this, last year was
00:46my first year working with PayPal, and we raised $64 million.
00:51I got the totals in January, I was like, I'm sorry, I think this is a typo, what?
00:55So it's so amazing, and I'm hoping that our 2018 numbers can be even bigger, but I'm just
01:03honored that I get to use my platform to talk about an initiative like this, it's very cool.
01:12So here's the easiest way to be a part of this.
01:14On the actual day of Giving Tuesday, Tuesday, November 27th, just making sure everybody
01:20knows what day it is.
01:22PayPal donates, well matches, 100% of donations made that day up to half a million dollars.
01:29So if you donate to charity through paypal.com slash giveback on Giving Tuesday, 100% of your
01:37donation will be matched.
01:39Up to half a million bucks, so we can raise a million bucks in a day, I love this game.
01:45And then every day afterward through the end of the year, PayPal matches 1% of all donations
01:51made at paypal.com slash giveback.
01:54And that's how we raised $64 million dollars last year.
01:58Something I think is great, my friend Glennon is a wonderful writer, and I was just recently
02:08with her on this amazing thing she does called the Together Tour.
02:11And we were talking to the audience about what's a bit of a mantra in our friend group,
02:14thanks to her.
02:16And she says, what breaks your heart?
02:19And then I always say, and what makes you angry?
02:22So what suffering and what injustice really affect you?
02:28What of those things that you witness makes you feel feelings?
02:32That's where you're meant to go.
02:34That's where you're meant to dedicate your time.
02:36So figure out what that is.
02:38Look up the organization around you.
02:40You can use paypal.com slash giveback if you'd like as a resource.
02:44It's like a charity aggregator.
02:45It's amazing.
02:46If you don't know where to start, that's where.
02:49And figure out somewhere in your community that you can go and help and help the helpers.
02:54Because there will be people at that organization who've been doing it longer than you, who can
02:58get you caught up to speed, who can train you on all the things.
03:02And then you're one of the helpers, and the next new wave will come in, and you'll pass
03:05the knowledge on to them.
03:07The last couple of years, my best friends and I, we started a tradition called Thanks
03:15Momming, which is before Thanksgiving.
03:18And everybody has their personal feelings, whether they like or don't like the holidays.
03:23But we can all agree that whether you had the best family in the world or your friends
03:28have become your family, there's this beautiful tradition of these holidays where many of
03:36us were lucky enough to grow up with moms who kind of ran the show.
03:39And so now as adults who have our friends and our family who've all become this big blended
03:44family, we throw a holiday party, and it's a massive potluck, and everybody comes and hangs
03:51out, and parents are welcome, and children are welcome, and it's utter mayhem.
03:57And you know, I spent the entire next day just cleaning my house, but worth it.
04:02You know, it's my favorite thing to host that.
04:04And that's the one holiday tradition that no matter where I am for work, where I might have
04:10to travel, I won't miss it.
04:14Yes, I mean, I would love to.
04:17You know, everyone's bugging Brad Bird about it.
04:20And he said something so funny when we were releasing the film.
04:22He said, just let me enjoy this baby before you ask me when I'm going to have another
04:26baby.
04:27And I was like, oh, that's such a good way to put it.
04:30Um, okay, fair, fair, fair.
04:31But now I'm like, so the baby's like almost a year old.
04:35Can we talk about it?
04:36No.
04:37Okay.
04:38Um, and that's actually not true.
04:39I realized the movie came out in June, and it's November, so I need to relax.
04:44But yes, I just, I loved being a part of the movie.
04:47He's such a dream to work for.
04:49Everyone on that film is so incredible.
04:51We, I didn't even mean to say that, but yeah, I just, it's like a pun, I can't even help
04:56it.
04:57Um, but really, we had the most wonderful time.
04:59So I would be game anytime they're ready.
05:01It really is so exciting.
05:07It's, it's been the most rewarding working experience I've ever had to date.
05:13It's, there's something for me about really being involved in all of it.
05:17You know, having a seat at that table and looking at our set builds and our design and, and all
05:24of our casting, you know, I've gone in and, and tested all of our actors so that they had
05:29somebody to read with who they're going to be working with.
05:32And that feels like such an amazing thing to be able to do for my compadres, you know?
05:37Uh, it's, it's just so good and our cast is so good.
05:42I, I really am beside myself.
05:49Eventually I wouldn't want to direct a pilot, you know, I have enough on my plate, uh, trying
05:54to build out a world for this woman, but I'm utterly thrilled that Patricia Regan has joined
06:01us as our director.
06:03She has such a vision and just knows exactly what we're up to and I just really can't wait.
06:12You know, we're really all trying to rally around our communities.
06:16Um, and for me, the thing that's felt the most impactful is people in my, in my group
06:23of friends and family tend to donate to charities in honor of me for the holidays.
06:29And I do a lot of that as gifts for other people as well.
06:31And I've asked everybody this year to just put a hard stop on all the wonderful causes
06:35that we donate to and instead redirect all of their resources to the United Way of Ventura
06:40because they're doing so much incredible work supporting our first responders and our displaced
06:45communities.
06:46And it's really all hands on deck for California right now.
06:49You know, it's, it's quite a devastating thing having grown up here my whole life to know how
06:55different this is.
06:56You know, we're accustomed to, to wildfires here and there, but, but the last couple of years,
07:01we've really been feeling the increasing effects of climate change have been so horrific and
07:07we've, we've got to get it together.
07:09You know, we have to immediately triage the wounds of our community and then we really have
07:14to figure out what it is we're going to do as a country because as the UN climate report
07:18just stated, we don't have the time to pretend that that might not be what it is anymore.
07:23We have 10 years, so we, we all really need to get to work.
