00:00We're in New York City, so how important, and this is a question for everyone, how important was it to depict New York City as it truly is?
00:10Because I feel like you guys nailed it, as opposed to other stories where people think they could just move to the city and it's like, okay, I have everything in the palm of my hand.
00:17Everyone's like a floor-through loft and they don't have a job.
00:22No, weirdly not.
00:23But we really wanted this to be at once a love letter to New York, but as real as possible, and that includes the grit and the ugliness and also the loneliness.
00:35I think that you don't move here and magically make a ton of friends.
00:39You spend a lot of time eating alone in your room, especially when you're starting out, but that's part of the process that's going to make you a better New Yorker.
00:47So we wanted to make space for all of that.
00:50And did you have, when you knew this was going to go to series, did you have a role in the casting?
00:57I did, yeah.
00:57So how did you know these two lovely ladies were perfect?
01:00My stomach flipped.
01:01My stomach flipped for everyone that we cast.
01:05I really think it's an instinctual gut reaction when someone walks in the room.
01:11It was, I mean, I had no doubts.
01:14But of course it's decision by committee, so there was lots of discussions, but I knew.
01:17How is it for you two to play such intricate characters where yours is finding herself and going through all these emotions, which you play so well?
01:30And then the mystery that you play, I mean, your resume is absolutely incredible, but this character, you have just solidified perfection with it.
01:38I really, even though I'm still trying to figure out your characters, I feel like you guys are so perfect.
01:47Can you relate to your characters or is it kind of something that was a challenge for you guys?
01:51I think I relate hugely to mine.
01:55I was living the experiences as Tess was.
01:57It was my first time in New York, first time doing TV.
01:59I was in this new place with these new people doing everything for the first time and completely freaking out.
02:05So it was the easiest job I've ever had to act because I was just playing myself.
02:10I knew a lot of women like Simone when I was Tess slash Ella's age, who I idealized, who to me seemed like they were living this perfect bohemian, free life.
02:25So it was amazing to sort of play the women that I had worshipped when I was a young woman.
02:30But I also loved that Simone has this darker, sadder, more vulnerable side to her.
