00:00There's a hot link place that I used to eat at way back in the day.
00:04Sports Radio 610 presents The Drive with Sterner and Kukli.
00:09It's the 5 o'clock fire.
00:12Ah, it is 5 o'clock. Congratulations. Hopefully you're off work.
00:16Luckily for you, old dirty show, T-Mill, a.k.a. Psycho T,
00:21have the latest. The latest is...
00:265 o'clock.
00:27That means at some point in this hour, you have a chance to win a pair of tickets.
00:31Front row seats in the bullpen.
00:35And if you don't get them, blame Tyler.
00:38He's the one taking the phone calls.
00:42That's fair.
00:43There are people who text in and really believe Tyler has it out for them.
00:49F you, Tyler. I've been calling all day.
00:51I've been calling. You're not answering the phone.
00:53I always call Tyler. You suck.
00:55I mean, I think he's got it rigged up.
00:56Yeah, I know your boy. I know he definitely believes Tyler is screwing him over.
01:03Oh, Cap.
01:04Cap every time.
01:07You know how fast he'd be talking.
01:10I remember Baytown brother.
01:11I know T-Mill, he ain't trying to answer my call.
01:15I'm just trying to get some tickets. He'll never try to answer my call.
01:18You tell, you tell, you tell.
01:21But no, man, he will get you in if you are the winner.
01:26So that's coming up.
01:27At some point, you've got to be listening.
01:29We'll give you that cue to call, and that's when you call.
01:32So don't call now.
01:33We don't have the phone lines open.
01:36But you'll understand and hear that cue, and that's when you get on the horn, 713-5724-610,
01:42for your chance to win a pair of tickets.
01:44All right, Clint.
01:45This news here, 44-year-old Phillip Rivers.
01:5344-year-old Phillip Rivers.
01:56I've fallen, and I can't get up.
02:00Grandfather, Phillip Rivers, who has not played in the NFL since 2020, the COVID season,
02:08is officially re-signing to quarterback-needy Indianapolis Colts.
02:15He's going to be on their practice squad.
02:17Daniel Jones went down with the Achilles.
02:19You knew exactly what it was when he started slamming his helmet repeatedly into the ground.
02:24It felt really terrible for him.
02:26And then Ryland Leonard, former quarterback in Notre Dame, thought he had his shot, and he did.
02:31He has a knee injury.
02:34So they need quarterback help with Anthony Richardson, who is already on IR and not eligible to come off,
02:41even if he was healthy.
02:42So they are without all three of them, and they may have to potentially turn to Phillip Rivers, Clint,
02:50to get in there, who, again, as we said, has not played since 2020.
02:55Hell, Clint, Rivers is currently a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2026,
03:01which I think has a shot to get in.
03:03Yeah, he's got a shot to be a first ballot, but if he's signed to the active roster,
03:07he had to wait another five years.
03:08He's got to wait another five.
03:09Got to wait another five years.
03:10A lot of folks thought maybe he saw the writing on the wall, didn't think he was going to be a first ballot.
03:14So he said, what the hell, man?
03:15Let me go ahead and pull my name out of the hat.
03:17Wow.
03:18I mean, that is – and this does affect the Texans.
03:21One, obviously the Colts have the same record as the Texans right now,
03:26and we thought they were going to have some struggles with their schedule.
03:29Now it really turns up, good luck.
03:31Maybe he might have to jump in and play the Seattle Seahawks on the road to kick things off.
03:35But this really does, I think, hurt their chances even more having to turn to 44-year-old Phillip Rivers.
03:42Well, the reality of it is I don't think Phillip Rivers signs with the Colts to help young players get ready
03:47and learn how to prepare and be an NFL quarterback.
03:50I don't think he signs with the Indianapolis Colts to be a backup quarterback and an emergency quarterback.
03:55I think he signs with the Indianapolis Colts because they feel strongly that he gives them a better chance to win over Riley Leonard.
04:04And now look, Riley Leonard at this point in time has that sprained knee, I believe it is,
04:08and literally it's a day-to-day deal.
04:10They haven't announced whether he's going to play or not, so it may throw us.
04:14But he may be – he may already be the backup.
04:17I think he –
04:17No, he has to be.
04:18He has to be, right?
04:18They don't have anybody else.
04:19Yeah, yeah.
04:20But, I mean, the reality of it is right now where we sit, I don't know that Riley Leonard's even practicing because of the knee.
04:27I don't know if they're – you know, they could announce any minute that he's not going to play.
04:32And so this was a sign because they feel like Phillip Rivers is the best thing on the market,
04:38which there's not much out there, that knows the system and that could give them a chance to win.
04:42Now, it is important to note that Phillip Rivers does go back with Shane Steichen.
04:47He knows this offense like the back of his hand, so stepping in immediately and mentally knowing this offense is not going to be a problem.
04:54The question, obviously, is physically can he still perform?
04:58Now, he's never been an athlete, like a mover and a shaker, so, you know, he's going to be a statue in the pocket anyway.
05:05And, look, he's been around the high school game, and I can tell you –
05:09And he's been coaching or something?
05:10He's been coaching for five years, yeah.
05:12But the significance here is I can tell you, man, I could spin it as well as I could ever spin it
05:19as long as I was training quarterbacks.
05:21I was actually conditioning my arm more training quarterbacks than I was when I was playing.
05:25And so the fact that he's been involved in the game and probably been training his kids
05:29and has been throwing the ball around and all that kind of deal, the arm may very well still be there.
05:34I didn't lose it until I quit gripping a football every day and throwing it.
05:38So the ability to throw the football is probably there.
05:41The mental aspect of it is probably there.
05:44Will father time just simply say, hey, man, coming out from underneath that center
05:48and reaching on that first step of that drop, we don't have the groings for that anymore, boys.
05:52Yeah, Jonathan Taylor, yeah.
05:53Yeah, I mean, that's the part of it.
05:55I think it's the lateral movement, the pushing up hard in the pocket,
06:00obviously taking hits when 300-pounders, 250-pounders laying on you could be a problem.
06:05But, I mean, making a throw and knowing the offense, I really don't think is going to be an issue for him.
06:12I mean, look, he's 44, so what are your expectations?
06:16You think he's actually going to get in?
06:18Absolutely.
06:19Absolutely, 100%.
06:20You think so?
06:21I don't think he comes.
06:23We saw CJ's rust after four games.
06:27No, this is not.
06:28I mean, absolutely he's going to play.
06:31Now, it may not be right away.
06:32They may, you know, oh, hell, he's a Band-Aid.
06:36I was going to say they may.
06:37I think Brett Rippon is on their roster.
06:41Not a bad player.
06:42They may see if Brett or Britt can get him through a game or two.
06:47But, yeah, I think the plan is the minute he's ready and act physically,
06:51feels like he can play, I think he's on the field.
06:53They're 8-5.
06:54I mean, they're not dead.
06:57I mean.
06:58Not yet.
06:59They're close, though.
07:00That horse is barely kicking, Ron.
07:02I mean.
07:02I mean, this is going to be.
07:04What do they got?
07:04At Seattle.
07:05I think he's going to play.
07:06At Seattle.
07:06I think it's going to be a rough go.
07:08At Seattle.
07:09Home Niners.
07:10Home Jags.
07:11At Houston.
07:12Correct.
07:12Second toughest remaining schedule in the league, I believe.
07:15Not to mention they're tough.
07:17Three of those teams.
07:18I don't know exactly where the 49ers defense is right now with their injuries,
07:21but I know them other three defenses are pretty damn good.
07:24I've watched that 49ers team multiple times.
07:27I don't know how they have nine wins.
07:29With all the guys, they have injured.
07:30I don't know how the hell Kyle is putting it together.
07:33Yeah.
07:33I think he plays, and I don't think it's pretty when he does.
07:36I think Will Anderson will feel bad about hitting him.
07:39I don't think he will.
07:39I think he'd gladly go get him.
07:41I think he'll go get him, but I think he'll feel bad.
07:44By that time, let me help you.
07:46What's Will got right now?
07:47Will got 12 yet?
07:48No.
07:4811 and a half?
07:49No.
07:50This past game hurt him, didn't it?
07:5110.
07:52Somebody's got 11 and a half, and somebody's got 10 and a half or 11.
07:55I know Daniel had more.
07:58So I think he's probably at 10 and a half.
08:03Five o'clock fire.
08:04That guy's got to be going through it.
08:05I'm going to tell you, I accidentally came across that guy on social media the other day.
08:09That's absolutely terrible.
08:12Yeah, but.
08:13I thought it was a joke.
08:14He's dead ass serious.
08:15He just took that praise and worship song and just turned it into his own.
08:18He's living.
08:19I don't know why.
08:21I mean, some of them I've seen, boy.
08:22Every time I hear that praise and worship song, I just crack up.
08:26He's a runner, Colts.
08:27I change words to the Colts every single time.
08:32Bleed blue.
08:33All right, a couple of Astros news and notes.
08:36The Astros, they will pick 17th after the draft lottery went down.
08:43The White Sox stunk, and they went ahead and got the number one pick as well.
08:48But after the draft lottery goes through the Texans, or the Astros, excuse me, are 17th overall in the MLB draft in 2026,
08:57they had a .34% chance to win the lottery, and so obviously they're 17th.
09:04But more news and notes as they head towards this new season.
09:09Astros manager had a few things to say injury-wise for players.
09:14He was talking about injuries, and health is going to be a major emphasis this year for players like Jose Altuve and Jordan Alvarez.
09:24Right now, quote, I need to keep guys healthy, Joe Espada said.
09:29And it looks like Jose Altuve is going to be at the forefront of that with Jordan Alvarez.
09:35He said Jordan Alvarez will play most of his time at the DH spot to try to keep him healthy.
09:41And then he talked about this with the MLB network in regards to Jose Altuve and how they want to handle him.
09:51You know what?
09:52I like the fact that he is open to help him, to do whatever it takes to help the team.
09:56But I think second base is his prime position.
09:59I think we're going to see him play there more this season.
10:01Giving us some starts in left field, that's something that I will sit down and talk to him about that.
10:06But right now, I need to keep our guys healthy.
10:09I think a lot of these players can play multiple positions.
10:11Paredes can play some second, third, and first base.
10:14It allows me to keep Correa and Walker healthy.
10:17The DH spot, I'm also going to use that spot to keep those guys off their feet some.
10:21So, you know, I got some really good players that once they're healthy, it's a really good team to beat.
10:27I can already see this, Tyler.
10:29This is going to frustrate Clint to high heaven this year.
10:33Oh, yeah.
10:34Well, I don't – listen, it's solved.
10:36Just – hold on.
10:37Just – but you've got to understand, before we get Clint in here and let him cut this promo,
10:42Tyler, what was the big – what would you say is the number one reason that they ended their streak of going to the playoffs?
10:51Oh, one, two, and three injuries.
10:53Injury, help.
10:54Like you've never seen.
10:55So, they're probably going to really, like, go overly cautious about how they handled that because it derailed their season so much.
11:07And it was.
11:07It was a weird thing, man.
11:09It wasn't – it wasn't the Dubons going down.
11:12No offense to Dubon.
11:13I mean, it was the important – I mean, every important player with the exception of Hunter and Framberg seemed to go down at some point and miss significant time.
11:22So, Clint, I mean, I know this is going to frustrate you, but they are – they don't want – they want to avoid what happened last year.
11:30And they are going to do everything they can to try to avoid injuries and have the situation of what happened last year.
11:38I don't have a problem with acknowledging what happened last year.
11:43I don't – I don't have a problem with firing your entire medical staff and say we've got to take a different approach to this season.
11:48I don't have a problem with thinking that you need to arrest everybody on the team that's over 21 years old because you think, like, load management is going to keep these guys healthy.
11:58Like, Paredes didn't snap a hamstring last week – last year because he was overplayed.
12:02He was overworked.
12:04I mean, these guys aren't injured.
12:05Like, Pino didn't rip an oblique or whatever the hell he did and have oblique issues down the street because he was overworked.
12:12I mean, there was clearly – hopefully you fixed the medical staff and the day-to-day training and what you're doing to get these guys right,
12:19some of the in-season stuff to keep them healthy.
12:22But I just hate the out-of-the-gate, man.
12:25We just – man, we got to get – you know, well, we got to cut play time.
12:29We got to load manage these guys to being healthy.
12:32Man, let them go play baseball.
12:34Let's go play baseball, man.
12:35They got some older cats that I think they're going to be careful with.
12:38Correa – Alvarez isn't older, but he's got some issues.
12:44Correa, Altuve –
12:45He just rattled off the whole team.
12:48Maybe Walker can play every day at first.
12:50No, he said Walker.
12:51He said that Paredes being able to play three positions.
12:54He gets Walker.
12:55Walker and Correa some rest.
12:56By the way, right, one of them aren't going to be here.
12:59Right.
13:01Like, Walker, Paredes, Correa, Altuve, who they just told us are going to be playing second base.
13:08Pena, that's like – those are all everyday players.
13:13Unless – unless Paredes runs to the outfield or something, like – it feels like –
13:18Well, I know.
13:19Ideally, to my point, even better – even somebody's going to be gone.
13:23Yeah, I think so.
13:24But the thought – like, to me, if you're interested in putting the best team out there,
13:29you put Jordan's ass in left field, and then whoever of those infielders,
13:33four infielders you mentioned, isn't playing.
13:35I guess it's five with four because you're not protecting Pena.
13:37Yeah.
13:38Those four infielders, whichever one is not in the field, is at the DH.
13:41It's that easy.
13:41This ain't hard.
13:43Yeah.
13:43Jordan's got the DH spot.
13:46Got to make sure he's healthy, baby.
13:47Yeah.
13:48You know it.
13:48Yeah.
13:49I mean, he missed 116 games or something like that last year.
13:52Yeah.
13:52Put your ass down, man.
13:54Stop running so hard, man.
13:56I guess we're not – are we even going to swing a bat this –
13:58No.
13:59No, he's going to swing a bat.
14:00Can we swing a bat since our hand was hurt?
14:02Maybe we'll slow down on tagging up.
14:03Can we – can we just –
14:05No tagging up basis to basis to the playoffs.
14:08Look, let's quit painting home plate.
14:11Quit painting home plate and realize the guy's injury prone.
14:14It's going to happen.
14:14Get your ass in left field.
14:15Let's play some ball back.
14:16And wear your seatbelt if you're on the damn injury card.
14:19I ain't going to lie.
14:20The love of God.
14:21I'm not going to lie.
14:21This is coming to me.
14:22Like, the Chiefs and the Astros have a very weird parallel on this year.
14:28They dominated their sport year, and then they just had these weird injuries.
14:32Both of them.
14:34That man went down on the first play of the game and tore his ACL.
14:38His alpha of the season.
14:39Probably next year, too.
14:40As you said, that man slipped on home plate scoring.
14:45The Jake – the Jake Myers one is the one that takes the game.
14:48That was – my man didn't make it out to center field.
14:52It's the injuries that those guys ran into.
14:55It's absolutely –
14:56You're not going to rest them to health.
14:58But not going – but, hey, not going to happen this year.
15:02Come hell or high water.
15:03The ten fewer games that Correa has to play will make a hell of a difference, man.
15:09It is.
15:11Silly.
15:12It is.
15:12It's going to make – Sanchez is out there every day, though.
15:14Who?
15:17Swinging out of his shoes, too.
15:18Jesus, man.
15:19That may be the –
15:20Jesus was healthy as hell, man.
15:22That may be the craziest thing.
15:24All offseason, all spring training, all we heard was, man,
15:27we're going to be more disciplined at the plate.
15:28And then at the trade deadline, they go get a guy that comes out of his shoes
15:31more often than Altuve and let him play.
15:35And they prefer to have him out there.
15:37Yeah.
15:38Good God.
15:39They didn't do bad.
15:39Is the keeper still around?
15:41I think so.
15:41I hope Yiner is somewhere throwing the second base.
15:45That's all I hope.
15:46Yeah.
15:47Somewhere in the crowd position throwing the second base.
15:50I've got to guarantee that improves from last year.
15:53Catchers and throwing guys out.
15:55That has to improve.
15:56That's the easy.
15:57I mean, them catchers were –
15:58When they were still in base –
16:00Oh, it is.
16:01When they were still in third with –
16:04Standing up.
16:05With a lefty in the box.
16:06He's still in third with a lefty in the box.
16:12Standing up.
16:14Welcome home.
16:15Yeah.
16:16Standing up.
16:18All right.
16:19All right.
