00:00It's been a minute since we worked on a Comanche but today we have one in the shop for some sheet
00:10metal replacement as well as corrosion and bed protection. We also take a look at where the
00:14last Comanche we worked on is currently at. Hey welcome to Truck U. In the shop we've got today
00:23something we haven't had in quite some time and that is a Jeep Comanche pickup truck. Now these
00:28were built in the mid to late 80s going into the early 90s and this is the last of the two-door
00:33trucks that Jeep ever built. You know one of the things that's cool about it is from the front to
00:38the back of the door this is basically all Jeep Cherokee so if you've got one of these old trucks
00:43man parts and pieces are easy to come by because there were so many made. When you start looking a
00:47little bit farther back well not so much. Yeah the issues start with the cab corners back there also
00:52on the floorboards on the inside some of that metal it's just a little bit different a little bit
00:56more challenging to come up with. Then you move back to the beds which are notoriously thin on the
01:01bottom so you want to make sure that that's good and strong that's one of the things we're going to
01:05be looking at to try to reinforce that. First glance you know your first impression it doesn't look
01:09pretty right but there's potential here and what I mean by that is like all this rust here this is all
01:14surface rust I'm not falling through and you know hurt my hand this is all salvageable and this is the
01:19hard part of the vehicle to source is the bed. Now you get up front you've got this front fender here
01:24well this might be a little questionable but the good news is that you can find these just
01:28about anywhere. So we worked on one of these before maybe a couple times we've been doing
01:33this for a long time so sometimes the memory's not quite what it used to be I don't know if it's
01:37three four five six years ago but you remember. It's been a minute. It came in and I want to say
01:42it started out orange and ended up blue. Yeah okay yeah I know what you're talking about. Then the owner was
01:47like you guys get it to this point get me this this this this send all that home with me and I'm going to finish it up.
01:53And you think it ever got finished? Probably not. It never does. You know they're supposed to always
01:57people like you know it'd be nice they send us pictures or videos of them enjoying the vehicles
02:01once we get them done. Here's what I'm going to do to that today while we're working on this thing
02:05I'm going to I'm going to contact him and see if I can get a picture of it in its current state.
02:08So we'll see what's up. Okay.
02:21We got the headlights and the bezels and the grill and everything up here in the front out of the
02:35way so that we could get that front fender off and that is over there off to the side. Now we're at
02:40the point where we can kind of take a look at where we're going to go because today it's all
02:44about fixing rust issues right and another issue as well which you'll get into in a second but
02:49anytime you're doing that and you're thinking man who am I going to go to we're working with
02:53the guys from classic to current fabrication. We love working with them and let me tell you why
02:57they call it classic to current because they have got metal replacement parts from all your current
03:02stuff on a lot of different vehicles going back to like a 1932 Model A. That's pretty cool. Yeah so
03:08I mean if you're doing a project on let's say like a 1967 whatever and you're going out you know there's
03:13some rust there and that's beyond really what I want to do I'd rather just find the metal and replace
03:18it but who do you call these are the guys you call. Yeah for good reason too because what they do is
03:22they take on you know some of the eclectic vehicles as well like this Comanche right you know it's
03:26hasn't been produced in about over 30 some years yeah but there are some parts and pieces that are
03:31unique to it I know I said from the beginning that well from here to there it's all Cherokee well I
03:36kind of lied to you because the rocker panel isn't but you know what they make a part to replace it
03:40they got also they've got you know a fix for all those hard to find parts and pieces you need now one
03:44of the things we discovered when we pulled that front fender off is an issue right here and it's kind
03:48of common on these vehicles basically the paint's being worn off because it's hitting against the tire
03:53so what's going to happen is over the course of time you're going to want to put bigger wheels
03:57and tires you're going to have more of a clearance issue well they've got a fix for that as well so
04:01you can go ahead and there's four little spot welds you can hit with a grinder to take this panel off
04:05and now they've got a replacement panel here that'll go up in a place so essentially you're removing all
04:10of this so now you've got plenty of clearance to put as big a wheel and tire as you want you know
04:15it's like why didn't the factory think about that early on right I don't know I don't know it's solving
04:19multiple problems but real quick before we want to go to I want to say something cool about the
04:23business right because it's a family business a lot of military in that family these guys started
04:28in Detroit Rock City and they were all into cars and they were into that stuff and what they noticed
04:33over time and they were kind of into other parts of the vehicles and it was all about this you know
04:38finding metal for rust problems there was a void in that and they're like hey you know what let's step
04:42in and we can solve those problems and I don't know if they have addictive personalities or whatnot but
04:46next thing you know they've got all these different pieces and parts for all these different
04:49vehicles so I like it I do too man it helps us keep vehicles like this on the road and looking good
04:53all right so as you said this piece is coming out but we've got to move a couple more things behind
04:58so now it's time to remove this panel you know when all comes down to the all the spot welds we've got
05:22to get through to get it off now the real key is taking some time and doing it the right way versus
05:27butchering it up because when it comes to putting the new panel in it makes it a whole lot easier
05:31and it's a lot cleaner look if you just kind of you know be a little smart about it and you have
05:35a kind of a thought process so what I've decided to do is you've got spot welds all through here
05:39then you've got them here and then it'll align basically on the underside so there's a couple
05:43different ways you can do it what I like to do is basically take a really pointy and sharp drill bit
05:48and kind of find a center point for each spot we're going to go through and try and drill out the spot welds
05:53now people can take a punch and do it that way but sometimes you don't get deep enough and then when
05:57you use the proper tool it wants to walk on you so if you take a really sharp drill bit and you use
06:02it almost like a center punch to give you a starting point it gives you a good baseline to go with
06:06now believe it or not there is a tool that was made specifically for these spot welds to drill out
06:12you can see it's got a center point to locate on there is your center point and you're going to drill
06:16down just enough to break it through the key is only to drill through the panel you're trying to remove you
06:21don't want to drill through the back side because that's more work you have to go ahead and repair
06:25it so I'm going to go ahead and put center punctures so to speak all the way around the spots where I'm
06:30going to spot weld drill and then start drilling away and getting this panel off it's a good time
06:34for you guys take a break because this is going to take a minute
06:58all right
07:04clean extraction so you're going to do all the work and I get to do the reveal I'm a giver this
07:10is great I love it really wasn't that bad it was about a half hour 45 minutes I keep in mind this
07:14was the first time I've ever done this before on this vehicle now I'll do the other side probably
07:18do it in like 10 or 15 minutes because I know exactly how to get it done reveals are like cutaways
07:22dude steel loves those things look at that boom let me file that look at all the room you can see how
07:28much clearance we have now it literally fits right where it needs to be we'll fasten it here and boom
07:34done now we can put you know some rice and canes in this thing so uh while you were working I got a
07:39hold of my buddy that had the other one in here you know because we were wondering it's like now he's
07:43going to be seeing this and he's like did you actually get him on the phone well I texted him
07:47and he texted back he did well when I came back over here to shoot this with you I had that like the
07:51blue bubbles so he was writing something I don't know what it is was he cussing at you again probably probably
07:56if we take a look back here at the side of the metal piece where where that is going to weld to
08:21I went ahead and ground that down got it good and clean smoothed out those spot welds and all that I
08:25still need to do that up here and once I get done with that we'll hit it with some weld through
08:29primer that way we can weld through it but it will be protected now if you take a look at the bottom
08:34of this piece you're going to see four holes right there and that is where let me put this in place
08:38that's where the spot welds will go in right to hold everything in there are more spot welds along
08:43here they're already in there we just got to punch them out with a drill bit and it will actually
08:47weld that in from this side and that'll give this a cleaner look right here so as Bruno said it's coming
08:53along nicely and it's not all that difficult to do
09:09dude this is nice that's I mean look at it it's solid it's one with the truck down you can pretty
09:27much do chin-ups on this thing so and we believe it or not we still have a few more spot welds to go
09:31but I think you get the picture that this is a solid piece it's a 19 gauge steel and I'm gonna tell you
09:36something uh quality so this is actually made by the guys at classic to current they make these
09:42metal parts and I mentioned their breadth of product all of the parts that they've got available
09:46and some of them they source right they don't have there's not enough time to make every single part
09:51that they have available but they work with companies and the cool thing that I like about
09:54them is they sort they look at everything quarterly and they go okay is there any piece
09:59or product that we're sourcing that's coming back with a lot of complaints or that isn't fitting or
10:03something like that and if there is boom they don't work with them anymore that way they keep
10:07the quality up so and I think it's safe to say that not every single company on earth does that yeah
10:11I think that's fair to say as well you know other thing to keep in mind too is like this is for a
10:15Comanche but this same product will work on uh on your uh Cherokees as well so you can do the same
10:21project you've got a lifted vehicle big wheel and tire need some clearance room this is the perfect
10:25solution for your Cherokees too all right so we talked about those source products right well this is one of
10:29them is that front fender we're putting on now you can see this is actually a pretty nice piece
10:34and while it doesn't look like it's fitting perfectly right now the reason why it's not
10:38is because of the bumper yeah there's a lip there's a lip right on the back side here and that's sitting
10:43on the bumper right there well that's an aftermarket bumper it's not the production one so what he did
10:46to make the production body panel fit they actually cut it you can see right here so you if you cut this
10:52right off it would fit right on and this gap would be perfect the thing is this guy's not going to use this
10:56bumper on this right so i don't want to cut this front fender no butcher this thing up so i say we
11:01just hand it to him like it is so when you get your new bumper bolt this thing out so another one of
11:04those source parts are the floor pans yeah like you were talking about you know he mentioned something
11:08that there might be an issue with the floor pan being thin or having lots more rusted through spots
11:12he hadn't really taken a look so we're going to peel back the layers and see if we need to do a
11:16little bit patchwork on the inside but want to make sure we had the right product to put in just in case
11:20so we wanted to take a look at what the floor pan looked like in this truck so we opened the door
11:27and couldn't see a thing no no not nothing except sound dampening yeah there was a lot of that but
11:33we understand why people put that in there that's cool so we figured we'd come down here and get
11:36super comfortable on the concrete which is nice and cool it actually isn't too bad you know the inverted
11:41look at the underside of this truck reveals basically looks like a patchwork quilt underneath where the
11:46floor pan used to be yeah we were wondering if we were going to find any issue and we certainly
11:50did and it goes from about from about there to about there right so i think it's structurally
11:56it's fine that doesn't appear to be any holes or anything no but i really don't think it's the right
12:00way to do it you know what i mean i don't believe in some of the material he used it might rot out
12:04pretty quick it wasn't quite of the highest standard what he pieced together underneath her so
12:08i say we hand him the new floor pan and we say gift from us to you and you do it with your leisure oh i
12:14like gifts like you like that yeah i do so we need to go to break right now we'll keep working on that
12:19and oh i almost forgot before we slid down on her here i think i got some pictures
12:24of the comanche oh much better okay that was good word i knew you were wondering rightfully so
12:40welcome back to truck you so now we can take a look at the bed of the truck and we've been referencing
12:45the fact that we need to do a couple things but i want to take just a second now since we're working on a
12:49comanche and it just reminded me of the comanche that we worked on before right we've been doing
12:53the show a long time like this is the end of my 21st season and the end of your 19th right so we've
12:59done a lot of different projects and met a lot of different people and after a while yes there's
13:03like a gap there you're 21 19 yeah two year gap there was another host for two years there was
13:09another host before you tell me now after 19 years yeah i thought you knew you know it was it's not
13:14a big deal dude it's not a secret or anything i mean don't it's okay just don't get emotional
13:17you have any extra kids out there you're not telling about it no dude that's the only secret
13:21that i have so i find it hard to believe but okay go ahead but regardless we've done a lot of
13:25projects remember the comanche project bruno we're going back we're kind of pulling back the curtain
13:29of some of the tv stuff right and you had an idea when this company that we worked with was a known
13:33additive to your oil and your fuel and this comanche had a really old engine in it oh yeah dude let's
13:38run it through there and see it works yeah but then you fast forward actually the dude that owned that
13:43truck right was around doing something helping us with something and we had this idea of doing like
13:48a road ranger truck and so we go outside on the side of the road to shoot the bit and it's raining
13:53and so we have him come up to the truck and we bruno and i like in real world we're just like this is
13:58kind of funny let's just roll the window down like a crack you know and he's out there standing in the
14:02rain and we're like should we help him and we weren't even planning any of that and then the bit was
14:06that he stole our gas can and took off because he did yeah he actually now we got it back we did after
14:11some time so but then that same comanche showed up in here and we did a uh a two-wheel to four-wheel
14:18drive conversion it changed colors a couple different times i think when it was last time
14:22i saw it it was like blue basically that one comanche that one comanche was in the show like
14:27four or five different times so and that's what reminded me of it and the whole reason i'm bringing
14:31this up is because i got a picture look at that it's beauty but it looks exactly like we left here
14:37just like it left except buried in a different corner so earlier today we were being sarcastic
14:42when we said that no work had been done to this thing uh lo and behold we're correct
14:47but you know i think we're starting to trend in the direction of this
14:49comanche right now and the fact that we need to get some work done on it like in the bed like remove
14:54this stuff and i see this and i go what's the rush because clearly if we don't do it nobody else is gonna do it
15:01the next thing that we are going to address is this bed and what we're going to do is we're going
15:17to apply the seymour 2k protective coating which is a spray on bed liner and i think a lot of people
15:22might look at this and go well why are you going to do the bed liner before you paint the rest of the
15:25vehicle that's a fair question well there really is a method to the madness you know the one being the
15:28fact that these beds are really thin meaning the material they use the steel they use is really
15:33thin and it dents very easily now believe it or not this is probably one of the best looking beds
15:37we've seen on a you know comanche come in in a long time right you know there's one little bit
15:41dent up here on the front side of it but usually these have a whole lot of waves to it you know what
15:45we're going to end up doing is uh coating the inside of this and the guy's probably going to take a
15:49bunch of parts and a bunch of everything else and store it in the back of the bed which a lot of
15:53people do because it's like you're in a shop you're in your garage you don't have a lot of floor space
15:57you pile stuff on the back of the truck well if you don't have it coated it's going to make this
16:01thing all wavy and wobbly and it's going to dent it to death so what we want to do is make sure
16:05we protect it so when the truck's all done this looks just as good as the rest of the vehicle
16:09the cool thing is this stuff is tough too because remember that one time uh we had just a little
16:14section that was treated with this and it was about this big and i remember i mean we were taking
16:18screwdrivers and keys and knives to that we had a lot of fun yeah we like vented all of our frustrations
16:24out on this thing and you wouldn't have even known we did it so that's going to be a great product
16:28and a great thing to add to the bed of this truck the only thing we have to do now is get
16:31it prepped there's a little bit of cleanup that we need to do ah just a touch yeah no big deal
16:44mevitek is known for their high quality and engineered steering suspension and wheel hub
16:57replacement parts now you can get all that and more with their new ttx brake pads ttx brake pads
17:04are premium aftermarket pads available in specialized formulas to meet the needs of hard-working vehicles
17:10that are 100 copper free and have a special burnishing layer for optimized bedding the
17:15backing plates are corrosion resistant and multi-layer shims reduce noise and vibration
17:20the supermet formula features a mechanical pad locking system on all pads to keep the frictional
17:25material secured even under the toughest loads like all ttx products the brake kits come with
17:31everything you need to get the job done right and restore performance with full brake pad service kits
17:37that even include the little hook to hang the calipers by
17:49so matt is fired up and can't wait to start spraying but we're not ready just yet now i've
17:55gone ahead and scuffed everything sanding it down so there's a surface to bite to but we've got all this
17:59dust we've got to wash off first then we got to hit it with the prep stuff to go ahead and make sure
18:03there's any grease or grime underneath we'll get it out so this way when we spray on the protective
18:09bed coating it'll actually bite it's all about the prep work like you said yeah and sometimes i do put
18:15the cart in front of the horse guilty as charged but you know this stuff like i said a little bit
18:19earlier it is ridiculously tough and that toughness is kind of a reaction because you've got a you've got
18:24a polyurethane and a polyurea hybrid blend and when those two come together like the mega powers man like
18:30i said indestructible so that's going to do everything that we want to do as far as you
18:33know the abrasion the dent resistance the resistance to weather and chemicals but here's the key you got
18:38to follow the direction right and i know some people have troubles with that but these directions are
18:42they're on the box for crying out loud and they're ridiculously easy to follow b you take a look at that
18:47we're mixing things right so when it comes to mixing it's pretty straightforward all you're doing
18:51is you're taking eight ounces of bottle b and you're pouring into one of a and you're going to shake it
18:56for 30 seconds then you're going to let it rest from it and shake it for another 30 seconds and then
19:00use the whole contents of that bottle spraying inside the bed then when you you need more you
19:05simply put eight ounces into the next bottle and use that bottle completely once you get the first
19:08three coats down the last one is basically going to be one to go ahead and kind of like a finer mist to
19:13get you know that texture down and that grit down onto the surface yeah the first three bottles are
19:17going to be enough to do a standard six and a half foot bed and then like you said you got the last
19:21bottle there with the proper mix you put that you get that texture that you want so i think it's going to
19:26look awesome sorry about putting up that everything on the bed so soon so let's get it cleaned out let
19:30me move this stuff out of the way too and we can get to wipe it sounds good
19:43so
20:00if you were to just look at this truck now from the side like from right there it wouldn't look
20:11like we did a ton but we actually did today we got a lot of things done there's some big projects we
20:15took out anytime you're cutting out sheet metal out of the vehicle and replacing with other sheet metal
20:19that's a project you want to take your time to make sure it's done right and that's exactly what we
20:23did now we've got this big room our big space here and you got a room for a big tire underneath this
20:27inner fender well and one other thing we did was go ahead and protect that inner fender well that
20:31we put on with seymour's eco you know it's an aerosol application you spray it on and it bonds
20:37directly to the metal so what it's going to do is protect from rusting from corrosion it's actually
20:42also going to look good and it gives you the opportunity to go ahead if you want to down the
20:45road paint it any paint or automotive paint will go right to it and bond with it perfectly that inner
20:50fender well looks good and then right on the outside too this this new one right there as soon as
20:54make some adjustments like that but again we're going to let him do that but nice new fenders
20:58those are going to look great and then the party continues well actually onto the floor which is
21:03another thing we kind of saw for him but we got him hooked up you know and then and then the new
21:07uh bedliner in the bed so bottom line is it's been a good day but i've got a question for you what do you
21:12think the odds are that this comanche is going to make it back into the shop at some point and actually
21:16be finished just judging on that track record comanches have had here not very good i'm going to take
21:20the off i'm going to take the opposite dude i think we're going to see this thing it's going to
21:23come back and it's going to be awesome you're taking the over yes all right i got the ender
21:26we'll see how it plays out now i hope i'm wrong well we'll see what happens but i know this that's
21:30all the time we have we'll see you guys next time right here on truck you so i don't want to put money
21:34on it or anything like that this would just be a nice thing to have it roll up one day i like these
21:38drops hey guys take a look at what i did you know what i did you know what i did you nice
