AccuWeather's Anna Azallion breaks down the record-breaking lows that have gripped the Midwest and Northeast regions of the U.S. from this week's polar vortex, with another wave of frigid air coming.
00:00A displaced polar vortex brought us record challenging cold this week, and we're going to do it again next week.
00:06Let's talk about what happened already, and then I'll tell you about what to expect as we head into the next work week.
00:11Thursday and Friday, we had record challenging lows, first in the north-central region and then into the Ohio Valley and the northeast.
00:17And many of these were below zero, so keep in mind your AccuWeather real field temperatures, what it actually felt like outside, were even colder.
00:24So Thursday, the records broken were mainly in Iowa, but we got a little bit more diverse with where the records were tied and broken as we went into Friday morning.
00:33Ohio, Indiana, even LaGuardia in New York City broke a previous record low. Some of these were below zero, others not quite.
00:41We're going to continue with the roller coaster temperatures because we'll get these pushes of Arctic air moving south from Canada,
00:47and then we'll rebound a little bit and temperatures will moderate, then we'll get another wave.
00:52So timing it out, the next wave of cold is to end off the weekend and then into early next week.
00:59So it starts out in the north-central region and then moves into the northeast, where by Tuesday morning, we have record challenging lows once again.
01:06You'll first notice the difference somewhere like Minneapolis.
01:09The temperatures drop from Saturday to Sunday. Our highs are in the teens and then the single digits.
01:15We're not breaking any records here, though.
01:16While this early week cold blast won't be quite as bad as what we just saw, we will be approaching record lows Tuesday morning in parts of New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
01:26And by the end of the work week, we have another blast of cold air.
01:30So somewhere like Minneapolis, we get back to highs in the teens and single-digit lows by the end of the week.
01:36And then somewhere like Philadelphia, we see a 10-degree drop in temperatures from Thursday to Friday.
01:42Now, this displacement of the polar vortex is going to continue to bring us waves of cold at least into mid-month.
