01:29Enjoy yourself, everybody. Enjoy yourself.
01:31And welcome, welcome, welcome to The Tonight Show!
01:35You're here. You made it!
01:38Guys, from the upcoming blockbuster Wicked For Good,
01:42Cynthia Erivo is my guest! Who knows?
01:48Wicked For Good is going to be so big.
01:50Broadway just announced a new show.
01:52Wicked For Good, the movie, the musical.
01:54Yeah, it's just fantastic.
01:56It was just announced that Cynthia will open
01:58this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
02:04Even Santa was like, I have to follow that?
02:06Come on! Can't I go first?
02:09Yeah, everyone's excited about Wicked.
02:11And let's be honest, it's not easy to put off
02:13a successful second act, case in point.
02:16You know, it's...
02:20Well, guys, Congress just passed a bill
02:22to release the Epstein files, and now...
02:24Now it's up to President Trump to decide when or if that happens.
02:33You know, releasing the Epstein files is very high
02:37on Trump's to-do list.
02:39It's right between play catch with Eric and eat a kale salad.
02:42And it's just...
02:43But this is nice. In honor of Wicked,
02:45Trump went from calling it a hoax to a witch hunt.
02:47That's nice.
02:49Meanwhile, I read...
02:50But I'm not so sure.
02:57I mean, they actually just put out a few files.
02:59Let's take a look at what they say.
03:00This first one says...
03:05There you go. Well, that's...
03:06Yeah.
03:07Let's not... Let's check out this next one.
03:09This says,
03:10Trump made Thousand Island Dressing with Prince.
03:13That's...
03:17And finally, this file says,
03:19Obama did it.
03:20And then...
03:21So they redacted a few things.
03:23I think it's worth it just to release.
03:29You guys hear about this?
03:30DoorDash said that their customer's personal information
03:32was stolen in a data breach.
03:34Ooh.
03:35The hackers will face criminal charges,
03:37along with vague DoorDash charges.
03:40$10?
03:44Some customers vowed to never use DoorDash ever again.
03:47And then they got hungry and ordered a burger
03:49from the McDonald's 600 feet away.
03:53Some more business news.
03:54The CEO of TJ Maxx and Marshalls
03:56said that the holiday season is off to a strong start.
04:00Yeah. They said it looks like a typhoon went through the store,
04:03but this time in a good way.
04:05I love going to TJ Maxx.
04:07Who doesn't love the shop
04:08while customers bare-knuckle box each other?
04:11Well, get this.
04:12A new ranking of the top global airlines was just released,
04:15and not a single U.S. carrier made the top 10.
04:18Ooh.
04:19Luckily, no one flying on a U.S. airline will hear this news,
04:21because their seat screens don't work,
04:23and the Wi-Fi costs $30.
04:26But this is true.
04:27Spirit Airlines ranked 115th.
04:31Which is really nuts,
04:32because there's only 83 airlines total.
04:33So it's like, how...
04:36You're behind a hot air balloon?
04:37Mm-hmm.
04:39Hot air balloon was in there, yeah.
04:42Drones, yeah, everything.
04:43Speaking of flying, a recent JetBlue flight
04:46had to make an emergency landing
04:47after a passenger smoked weed in the bathroom,
04:50and the crew inhaled it.
04:51Oh.
04:54It was pretty wild.
04:55Just listen to some of the captain's announcements
04:56throughout the flight.
04:58Uh, can the flight attendants please come up here
05:01and bring, uh, 40 bags of blue chips?
05:03Uh, is it just me,
05:06or does that cloud look like a duck?
05:08Hello, this is your speaking, captain.
05:10Wait, I mean, captain speaking?
05:12That's crazy.
05:14We're expecting some turbulence,
05:16but, hey, that's okay.
05:17Life is like that sometimes.
05:18Take the good with the bad.
05:20Namaste.
05:21Yeah, it's a very...
05:23It's an interesting flight.
05:28Hey, I saw that Eminem is suing the beachwear brand Swim Shady.
05:32Oh.
05:33For trademark infringement, yeah.
05:36In response, a spokesman for the company said,
05:38We're really sorry for calling our swimwear company Swim Shady.
05:42Please accept our sincerest apology.
05:46Seems like an honest mistake.
05:49And, finally, this is wild.
05:50According to a new study, the first kiss
05:53was over 17 million years ago.
05:55Ooh.
05:56Yeah, it happened during a game of Spin the Rock.
06:00It's pretty cool until you realize
06:01toothbrushes were invented in 1938.
06:03We have a great show.
06:04Give it up for The Roots, everybody.
06:06Clap your hands, your hands, you're clapping.
06:09If I ask, do you feel it better?
06:10Answer back.
06:11See me with a big boy burgundy Cadillac.
06:14Cold rhyming and designing what you think of my life.
06:17Thank you very much.
06:19Welcome to the show, everybody.
06:22This is kind of exciting news for me.
06:24I had this holiday album come out last year,
06:26Holiday Seasoning.
06:27This is, thank you very much.
06:31Oh.
06:33Nice.
06:34But I was looking at it, and last year, it got me thinking.
06:37I always wanted to, there's like 25 original songs,
06:39and I wanted everyone to put it in a movie
06:43or a TV show or something.
06:44That's one of my dreams, and specifically a Hallmark movie.
06:47Right, that's the way.
06:48That's my fave.
06:49I start watching them as soon as I can.
06:51I watched one last week, yeah.
06:53Well, my Christmas wish came true.
06:55What?
06:56Because my song, Holiday, with the Jonas Brothers,
07:00is going to be in a new Hallmark movie called
07:02Holiday Touchdown, A Bill's Love Story.
07:05It premieres this Saturday, November 22nd,
07:12at 8 p.m. on the Hallmark Channel.
07:15Let me tell you what it's about.
07:16Sparks fly between two lifelong Buffalo Bills fans
07:20as they try to discover the identity
07:22of a mysterious Christmastime gift giver.
07:25Ooh.
07:26It's got to be Santa, right?
07:29I mean, you know.
07:30Must be Santa.
07:31It's got to be Santa, yeah.
07:32Must be Santa.
07:33Or Josh Allen. It's one of the two.
07:36Either way, I'm so excited about this.
07:37Thank you, Hallmark.
07:38Thank you, everybody, for putting the vibes out there.
07:43How cool.
07:45What a show we have for you tonight.
07:47She is an Emmy, Tony, and Grammy winner
07:50who returns as Elphaba in the new film Wicked for Good,
07:54which is in theaters and IMAX this Friday.
07:56Cynthia Erivo is here tonight.
08:03Unbelievable.
08:05She's unbelievable.
08:08You can see her in season two of the Apple TV series
08:11Palm Royale.
08:12Leslie Bibb is joining us.
08:19And he is a media legend who co-founded and became CEO of MTV
08:25and changed pop culture as we know it.
08:27His new memoir, Unplugged Adventures from MTV to Timbuktu,
08:31is out now.
08:32Tom Freston is here tonight.
08:35He's the best.
08:37I love Tom Freston.
08:39Unplugged.
08:40And we got great music, everybody, from Nora Fatehi,
08:45featuring Shansia.
08:46Oh!
08:50Big show. Stick around.

08:54That hat that you wore in London, I said, yes.
09:03She goes, um, well, I have it.
09:06What?
09:09That.
09:10Yeah, that.
09:12That.
09:22Our first guest is an Emmy, Tony, and Grammy-winning artist
09:26who is back in her Oscar-nominated role as Elphaba
09:29in the new film Wicked For Good,
09:31which is in theaters and IMAX this Friday.
09:34Please welcome Cynthia Erivo.
09:36Oh my gosh, that's what I'm talking about, that's what I'm talking about, come on, oh
09:59my gosh, they love you, they love you, they love you, they love you, they love you, they
10:06love you, we love you, welcome back, congrats on everything, how is your voice, I know you
10:12lost your voice.
10:13She's still missing in action.
10:14Okay, good, yeah.
10:15But she's there.
10:16I kind of like it.
10:17She's kind of sexy.
10:18She is sexy and mysterious, yeah, I like it.
10:21I want to talk about your book.
10:23You have so much to talk about.
10:25You just flew back after you did the Wicked premiere here, went to London because you're
10:30on the cover of British GQ, Men of the Year.
10:35Not too shabby.
10:36Not too shabby.
10:37Not too shabby at all, but then you came back for us, which I appreciate.
10:40Always.
10:41And you have a new book out called Simply More.
10:44Yeah.
10:45And this is for a book for anyone who's been told they're too much.
10:50Yeah.
10:51I love that title.
10:52Yeah.
10:53Yeah, that's a great way of saying it.
10:54Like, I'm not too much.
10:55No.
10:56I'm Simply More.
10:57You're Simply More.
10:58Yeah.
10:59Anyone who feels a little bit different, anyone who's been told that they're too much or they
11:02do too much, they're not doing too much.
11:04They're doing exactly what they're meant to be doing.
11:06Yeah.
11:07Yeah.
11:08I love this.
11:09This is a great message.
11:10Great for anybody out there.
11:11Yeah.
11:12And were you that kid growing up where you were like, I'm just different?
11:15Yeah.
11:16I was just, like, chatty and bossy and inquisitive and was never shy.
11:21And everything.
11:22Yeah.
11:23Sometimes it got on people's nerves, but that's okay.
11:24Yeah.
11:25Doesn't matter.
11:26Yeah.
11:27Look at what you've done.
11:28I think it worked.
11:29Yeah, I think it really worked out.
11:30It was great.
11:31You're phenomenal in this film in Wicked For Good.
11:34You are phenomenal.
11:35You've actually been everywhere around the world doing the premieres.
11:39I don't know how you do it, but good for you.
11:42This is exactly what, yeah.
11:43This is, yes, you should be like Cynthia.
11:45Come on.
11:46Yeah, go around the world and do all this.
11:48You became a meme last week.
11:50I know.
11:51I know.
11:52Congratulations.
11:53You thought you've done it all.
11:55I've made it.
11:56Now you've really made it in your career.
11:57Now I really made it, yeah.
11:58You're a meme.
11:59This is the meme.
12:00Perfect.
12:01And there you go.
12:02And that was so much.
12:03That is...
12:04You got to be proud.
12:05I'm so proud of it.
12:06That is the meme.
12:07I'm really proud of it.
12:08But let's explain what happened and why we ended up with this great.
12:13Can I take you right back to the beginning?
12:14Yes, please.
12:15Okay, so a year ago in London when we did the premiere, I was wearing this beautiful hat with this dress.
12:21I put it down in the theater when we were watching the film and I left it behind and then couldn't find it.
12:25We went, searched for it.
12:27We just couldn't find it anywhere.
12:29And we just let it be.
12:31We've lost it.
12:32Devastated.
12:33Never mind.
12:34Cut to a year later.
12:35We're in Paris.
12:36And I'm going to this event.
12:38And I walk out and I see there's some really lovely fans.
12:40And I think, I'm going to sign everyone's books or whatever they need.
12:44And I get to the end of the line and one girl goes, um, that hat that you wore in London.
12:49I said, yes.
12:50She goes, um, well, I have it.
12:55What?
12:56That.
12:57That.
12:58Yeah, that.
13:00You.
13:01Shh.
13:02Shh.
13:03I'm seeing the meme live.
13:06It's actually phenomenal.
13:08You have the hat?
13:09You have the hat?
13:10So I said to her, can I have it back?
13:14She said, I don't have it with me right now.
13:16It's in my house.
13:17I said, well, well, when can we get it back?
13:20She said, can I get tickets to the premiere?
13:24Listen, fine.
13:25Yes, of course.
13:26Have them.
13:27And she brought it back.
13:28And I was reunited with my hat.
13:33That's a great story.
13:36Isn't it great to have just good fans out there that are just honest and cool?
13:40I thought that was just really kind because she could have done anything with that hat.
13:43It could have been sold.
13:44eBay.
13:45Yeah, exactly.
13:46eBay exists.
13:47And she kept it this whole time.
13:48So it was lovely.
13:49Good. I love that story.
13:50And I love that you reunited with that hat.
13:52Yeah.
13:53I want to congratulate you because last week you were nominated for two Grammys.
13:57Yeah.
13:58Two Grammys! Come on, bud!
14:02How great is that?
14:03So great.
14:04Where were you when you found out?
14:05On the steps of the Paris Opera House, taking pictures for the...
14:09I know, everything is so dramatic.
14:11Isn't that great how life has sometimes worked out?
14:14I know.
14:15You're on the steps of the Paris Opera House.
14:16Steps of the Paris Opera House, yes.
14:17And who tells you?
14:18Mark Platt, the lead producer on Wicked.
14:20I love Mark Platt.
14:21I love him so much.
14:22He's so wonderful.
14:23And he's taking such great care of everybody and this film and this legacy.
14:26And he wanted to be the one to tell us.
14:28And he did it with such, like, kindness and sweetness.
14:31He was so excited as well.
14:32You had no clue.
14:33I had no clue.
14:34Of course.
14:35I didn't even know we could be nominated for that.
14:36Yeah.
14:37I didn't know we could be eligible.
14:38Yes!
14:39Go, go, go! Keep going!
14:40I always thought it would be kind of funny if I showed you the songs that you sing in Wicked and maybe you blind rank them.
14:50Okay.
14:51Which one do you love to sing most?
14:53Okay. This is like picking your favorite children.
14:55But here's the thing. You don't know what order I'm going to say or what children I'm naming.
15:00Okay.
15:01So this is a blind rank. You're just going to have to go, like, it's probably in the top.
15:05Yeah.
15:06I'm not going to lie and say I'm not going to cheat.
15:08Don't say until after you cheat.
15:12I mean, I'm honest, if nothing else.
15:14I know you're honest, but, no, this is it. No switchies.
15:18Fine.
15:19No changes.
15:22Ready?
15:23Fine. Ready.
15:25The Wizard and I.
15:27Ooh.
15:28Top six.
15:30My brain says put it at number three.
15:33Because she's a really beautiful song.
15:35Yep.
15:36She's one of my favorites to sing.
15:37She's a great one. Three is where it belongs.
15:39I'm going to put a three. Yeah.
15:41Okay.
15:43Defying gravity.
15:45Cynthia, think about this. Don't mess this up, man.
15:49I'm going to put it at one.
15:50Everything's been great up to this point.
15:51I know.
15:52Why?
15:53I'm going to place her at number one.
15:55Yes!
15:56I think you're happy.
15:58She's that vibe, you know?
15:59Because kind of...
16:01I mean, you know, she wrote it.
16:03She did it.
16:04She did it.
16:05She did everything.
16:06Yeah.
16:07Yeah, you did it.
16:08You do it. I can't do it today.
16:09I know you can't do it. Yeah.
16:10Thank God you didn't do it like me.
16:11You did it fantastically just now.
16:12Thank you for asking.
16:13What is this feeling?
16:15Ooh.
16:16I'm going to put her at number five.
16:18Okay. Okay.
16:19Because she's fun to sing. She's fun.
16:21She's fun to sing, yes.
16:22Yeah.
16:23We still have three others.
16:24Ooh.
16:25Wait, this is...
16:26Let me just...
16:27I'm looking at your head.
16:28Ooh.
16:29Okay.
16:30No good deed.
16:31I'm putting her at number two.
16:33Yeah, really?
16:34Yeah, I know.
16:35You love that one.
16:36I love that one.
16:37I do.
16:38No good deed, number...
16:39Ooh.
16:40I know, this is...
16:41Oh.
16:42I see the ones coming up.
16:44I know what he's gonna do.
16:45I see the ones coming up.
16:46I see the ones coming up!
16:47I know what he's gonna do.
16:48Here we go!
16:49No, you don't know yet.
16:50No.
16:51Oh, no!
16:52Oh, no!
16:53Oh, no!
16:54As long as you're mine...
16:58Don't do it!
16:59Don't do it!
17:00This is a fantastic song.
17:03No, you can't.
17:04No, do not!
17:05No!
17:06Don't you dare!
17:07Don't you...
17:08Unbelievable.
17:09You are in big...
17:11You are in big, big trouble.
17:13You're in big trouble, Cynthia.
17:15Wait.
17:16Four good.
17:20It's hard.
17:22It has to go here.
17:23It has to go there.
17:24This is the list.
17:25But...
17:26Are we happy?
17:27No, I'm not.
17:28Wait.
17:39We'll move this one.
17:40We'll put this down here.
17:41I think that's good.
17:42I think we'll move this down here.
17:44Yeah, okay.
17:45And we'll put this here.
17:46Because I think that makes sense.
17:47You know what I mean?
17:48Yeah.
17:49I think these are the top three.
17:50This is it.
17:51This is how the game works.
17:52That's right.
17:53That feels good.
17:54This feels right.
17:55Judges, what do we think?
18:01Thank you for playing that.
18:02I know that was a hard game for you to play.
18:03That's hard.
18:04It's very unfair.
18:05Very unfair.
18:06The film is so big and epic.
18:09It is gorgeous.
18:10John M. Chu, great job directing this.
18:12It's the best.
18:14I think you should see it on IMAX.
18:16You should.
18:17If you should, because it's just so much for your brain
18:20and your eyes to look at and see and love.
18:22And, actually, thanks to our friends at IMAX,
18:24everyone in our audience tonight is getting two tickets
18:27to see Wiki.
18:28Look at that.
18:29That's what I got.
18:31It's 50-hour emo.
18:33Cynthia Erivo.
18:34That's what you do.
18:35That's how you do it.
18:36That's how you do it.
18:37That's how you do it.
18:38That's how it goes.
18:39That's how you do it.
18:40That's how you do it.
18:41That's how you do it.
18:42I want to show everyone a clip.
18:45Here's Cynthia Erivo in Wicked for Good.
18:48Take a look.
18:49No good deed goes unpunished.
18:54No act of charity goes unresented.
18:58No good deed goes unpunished.
19:01That's my creed.
19:04My road of good intentions led where such roads always lead.
19:10No good deed goes unpunished.
19:18No good deed goes unpunished.
19:23Someone said, what?
19:25That was fantastic.
19:26That's right.
19:27That's what you say.
19:28Cynthia Erivo, the one and only Wicked for Good,
19:31is in theaters and IMAX this Friday.
19:34Leslie Big joins us after the break.
19:36Stick around, everybody.
19:37Come on back.
19:38Uh-huh.
19:39Here, here.
19:40Say it.
19:42You officially own the bob right now.
19:49Your haircut.
19:50I know this bob.
19:51It's become its own thing now.
19:53They did it on SN.
19:55It was crazy.
19:56That's the greatest birthday gift ever.
19:58It was called Bob Army.
20:00And everyone had bob cuts.
20:02And Bowen Yang says, we only answer to Leslie Bibb.
20:05I would dance!
20:17Our next guest is a very talented actress starring in Season 2
20:22of the series Palm Royale.
20:24New episodes air Wednesdays on Apple TV.
20:27Please welcome Leslie Bibb!
20:29Leslie Bibb!
20:36Royalty.
20:45That's Leslie Bibb!
20:46Yes!
20:48Hi!
20:49Leslie, welcome back!
20:51Hi, I love you.
20:52How are you?
20:53Welcome back to The Tonight Show.
20:54Thank you so much for...
20:55Ooh, hold on. Let me drink some water.
20:56Ooh, yeah.
20:57You get a little parched from that.
20:59A little hydration.
21:00Yeah.
21:01I want to say happy bladed birthday.
21:03Yes.
21:04Yes, happy birthday.
21:05You just celebrated a birthday.
21:06I did!
21:07Does Leslie Bibb go big on birthdays?
21:10I usually go big.
21:11I love a birthday.
21:12I feel like we're alive.
21:13Celebrate.
21:14Yes!
21:15You could be six feet under.
21:17But this year has been kind of crazy.
21:19And I said to...
21:20And Sammy's is on the November 5th.
21:22Oh, so you're close.
21:23Yeah, we're little Scorpio babies.
21:24The great Sam Rockwell.
21:25The great Sam Rockwell.
21:26Yes.
21:27And so I said, let's not...
21:29Let's just be chill.
21:30So we went to dinner.
21:32We, like, I don't know.
21:33We did nothing.
21:34But then we came home and he's like,
21:35let's watch a movie.
21:36And we watched Fatal Attraction.
21:37I was like, perfect birthday movie.
21:40Yeah, Fatal Attraction.
21:41Have you seen it recently?
21:43It's one of my favorites,
21:44but I haven't seen it recently.
21:45Glenn Close is so incredible.
21:48She's brilliant.
21:49She's brilliant in this movie.
21:51And, like, Sam, we just kept being like,
21:53did she do that?
21:54What is this?
21:55She's phenomenal.
21:56Levels.
21:57Your acting is phenomenal.
21:58You got all these accolades for White Lotus.
22:00You crushed it.
22:02Crushed it.
22:03Next level.
22:05Thank you for saying that.
22:06Next level.
22:07You were fantastic.
22:08You're so nice to me.
22:09No, what are you talking about?
22:10But also, I have to say that you officially own the bob right now.
22:13Your haircut.
22:14I know this bob.
22:15It's become its own thing now.
22:18They did it on SNN.
22:19It was crazy.
22:20That's the greatest birthday gift ever.
22:22You were in Saturday Night Live, had a thing called...
22:24I mean, I wasn't, but my...
22:25Your bob was.
22:26My boblet was.
22:27It was called Bob Army.
22:29And everyone had bob cuts.
22:32And Bowen Yang says,
22:33we only answer to Leslie Bibb.
22:35I was dead!
22:36And got a giant applause.
22:38Dead!
22:39I was dead.
22:40That was really like...
22:41How fun is to have a famous haircut?
22:43I know.
22:44It's such a strange thing.
22:45Chris McMillan cuts my hair.
22:46Oh, he's brilliant.
22:47And he's, like, a very fancy person.
22:49He's a lovely, great, great human being.
22:51The most fun, dude.
22:52I love him.
22:53So fun, right?
22:54Yep, we know him.
22:55And wild.
22:56And we cut it for the show.
22:58We just felt like it was right for the character.
23:00She's a little strung, a little tight.
23:03And I wanted it to have, like, precision.
23:05And she's a perfectionist.
23:06And he gave this great cut.
23:08And now it's...
23:10The bob is on SNL.
23:12Yeah, now the bob is on SNL.
23:14Yeah.
23:15And they have this crazy name.
23:16They call it...
23:18It's called the Sia.
23:19It's called...
23:20It's a bad word.
23:21It's the See You Next Tuesday Little Bob.
23:24That is not what they call it.
23:25They call it the CLB.
23:27And it actually started.
23:28Amy Lou Woods, who was on White Lotus...
23:31She's fantastic as well.
23:32...and who was, like, my bestie.
23:34Her best friend, Ashe, said,
23:36Oh, I love Leslie and her...
23:39Little Bob.
23:40And...
23:41Said this...
23:42About the See You Next Tuesday.
23:43Yeah, the See You Next Tuesday Little Bob.
23:45And that is for Kate, my character.
23:47And so she told me, and I happened to be going to see Chris
23:50to get a trim.
23:51And I didn't realize he was filming me and making, like,
23:54a TikTok video.
23:55And then...
23:56That went everywhere.
23:57And then I was like, Oh, it's called this!
23:59And I'm, like, saying it.
24:00And then it sort of...
24:01It had legs.
24:02Oh, my gosh.
24:04Speaking of the best, Kristen Wiig, who I love so much.
24:06Palm Royale, Season 2.
24:08She's so good.
24:09How about that dance number she did?
24:11She's just insane.
24:12She's insane.
24:13I mean, Kristen is, like, an incredible human being,
24:16as you know, like that.
24:18And I bow at that altar.
24:19I love her.
24:20But the whole cast is nuts.
24:22Nuts.
24:23I mean, Carol Burnett.
24:24Allison Janney.
24:25Allison Janney.
24:26Laura Dern.
24:27Laura Dern?
24:28These are homers.
24:29And, like, Ricky Martin.
24:30Yeah.
24:31There's this, like, opening, like, sequence in the beginning.
24:35And Kristen does this sort of drug-induced dance.
24:39And Ricky sings.
24:41And it's just... I think it's...
24:43It's brilliant.
24:44Brilliant.
24:45And Kristen can, like, sing and dance.
24:47She's...
24:48She's phenomenal.
24:49All of these guys are so talented.
24:50But Carol Burnett.
24:51Carol Burnett.
24:52I had a scene with her.
24:53And every time I'm in front of her, I want to just, like,
24:56get down and be like, Okay.
24:58Because, I don't know, I watch her.
25:00I watched Carol Burnett when I was a kid.
25:02I watched Bob Vila and Carol Burnett.
25:04Those were the shows.
25:05Wait, this old house?
25:06Yeah.
25:07Bob Vila's my dude.
25:08Really?
25:09I love this old house.
25:10Didn't it make you feel safe?
25:11Yes.
25:12Yeah.
25:13It still does.
25:14It does, right?
25:15And you can watch...
25:16It's one of my favorite shows.
25:17PBS.
25:18It's the greatest.
25:19Bob Vila.
25:20Is that why you're posting, like, kind of home reno videos?
25:21I bought a house upstate.
25:22And it's, like, my homage to, like, Bob Vila.
25:25Because I just love him.
25:26And I also just love, like...
25:28An old house.
25:29An old house.
25:30And it's, like, this house is from 1755.
25:32And it was, like, so cool.
25:34And it doesn't...
25:35Like, a witch didn't get cooked in it or anything like that.
25:37No, no, no.
25:38I didn't say that.
25:39No, no, no.
25:40It doesn't have, like, scary...
25:41I mean, I'm sure there's ghosts, but I feel like they're, like,
25:42really nice ghosts if they're there.
25:43Like, every house has ghosts.
25:44Yeah.
25:45I would think.
25:46But, yeah, I mean, I walked into one house, and it...
25:49I had a weird vibe.
25:50Not nice ghosts.
25:51Not nice vibes and not nice ghosts.
25:53And then I heard a story that it sold that weekend.
25:57And then when they went to, like, move out stuff,
26:00the real estate agent was like,
26:01Oh, they forgot this painting in the attic.
26:03And they moved the painting, and on the back it said,
26:06Do not move this painting.
26:07The ghosts will get angry.
26:08Bye!
26:10Bye!
26:11What are you talking about?
26:13Can you look at me?
26:14Who would write that on the back of it?
26:16I don't know.
26:17It's so scary.
26:18What?!
26:19We didn't touch the painting.
26:20I know.
26:21I'm like, but I think he probably moved it.
26:23Of course he moved it.
26:24And the house sold, like, three weeks later.
26:26Oh, no.
26:27It went back on the market.
26:28And the ghost was getting angry.
26:29It went back on the market.
26:30Yes.
26:31The ghost was angry.
26:32Don't touch the painting.
26:33Don't touch the painting.
26:34You're supposed to talk to ghosts and say, like...
26:37Negotiate with the ghost?
26:38Yes, you are.
26:39Like, you're supposed to say,
26:40I come in peace.
26:41I don't want to mess.
26:42Like, I...
26:43This is your space.
26:44That's what I say.
26:45I don't mess with them.
26:46I don't never...
26:47I don't mess with them.
26:48I don't mess with ghosts.
26:49I'm not afraid of no ghosts.
26:50Yeah.
26:52Okay.
26:54How can we set up...
26:57Bustin' does not make me feel...
26:59All right.
27:00What...
27:01Can we set up season two?
27:02What it is and who your character is.
27:05Who your character is.
27:06We're talking about ghosts.
27:07All right.
27:08Palme Royale.
27:09I just got the kook.
27:10Sorry.
27:11I love getting a little good.
27:12Oh, God.
27:13Palme Royale.
27:14What am I doing?
27:15Oh.
27:16I...
27:17My husband has...
27:18My husband has passed away.
27:20Mm-hmm.
27:21And he...
27:23Or he has not passed away.
27:24My husband has been...
27:26In fact, she has a very complicated life this year.
27:30She...
27:31Yes.
27:32I'm married, but my husband has been taken by the feds,
27:34and I don't know where he is, so I just declared him, like, missing.
27:39Yeah.
27:40And I guess in 1969, if you did that, you could marry somebody else.
27:43So somebody else...
27:44This elderly gentleman is marrying me, and he is bequeathing me all his money.
27:49And in 1969, women couldn't have bank accounts without, like, men signing off for them.
27:55So she is getting all this money and finding her own sense of agency, if you want.
28:00Yes!
28:01Good.
28:02So I am, um, with Carol Burnett, getting her approval on my wedding gown.
28:07But I'm...
28:08I...
28:09Yeah.
28:10That's it.
28:11I want to show a clip of Leslie Bibb in Season 2 of Palme Royale.
28:14Take a look.
28:15Well...
28:16Oh.
28:17What does everyone think?
28:20Uh, it's dazzling, simply dazzling.
28:24Oh.
28:25Norma.
28:26Your approval meets the world, considering you were once the love of Axel's life.
28:31Indeed, all he talks about is you.
28:34Oh, a schoolboy's crush.
28:36Brave of you to go through with it when you're already married.
28:39This is Palm Beach, not Provo.
28:41When Perry disappeared last season, I had him declared dead for tax purposes.
28:45Legally, I'm a widow.
28:47Come on, now.
28:49Leslie Bibb, everybody!
28:51You're phenomenal.
28:52New episodes of Palme Royale Season 2 air Wednesdays on Apple TV.
28:57More to match you after the break.
28:58Take it down, everybody.
29:00Tell me why, tell me so.
29:02I tell you to go high.
29:04You don't...
29:07...in front of an audience that's never been pleased.
29:12Our next guest is a legendary media figure.
29:16He's a co-founder of MTV, who rose through the ranks,
29:20becoming CEO of MTV Networks and later all of Viacom.
29:24His new memoir, Unplugged, Adventures from MTV to Timbuktu,
29:28is available now.
29:29Please welcome Tom Freston!
29:32Come on, Tom Freston!
29:47Alright.
29:48Hey, buds. Thanks for...
29:49That's a good song.
29:50Yeah, that's a good song. You remember that song.
29:52I'm so happy to have you here in the chair and talking to you,
29:57because I get a chance to...
29:59I'm lucky enough to know you for many years,
30:03but these are fantastic stories.
30:05I mean, there's the craziest stuff that...
30:08You had a whole life before MTV that I didn't know about,
30:11but you're a very adventurous traveler.
30:14Yes.
30:15Did that help you when you were creating MTV?
30:18Well, I had spent like 10 years, you know,
30:21either traveling, a couple years traveling,
30:22and I started a business for eight years in Afghanistan and India
30:25back in the 70s when it was...
30:27It was a wild place.
30:28I mean, India was then like 60% of people were below the poverty line.
30:32Afghanistan was calm.
30:34It wasn't like it has been with all these warring actions going on,
30:37but it was fascinating.
30:39So I picked up, you know, living like low to the ground,
30:41a hardscrabble kind of existence.
30:43You know, you learn a lot of things.
30:45You know, you learn humility, how...
30:47You know, particularly in India.
30:48Humility, tolerance of risk, or wanting to take risks,
30:51and an appreciation of odd things and odd people.
30:54Yeah.
30:55And all of those...
30:57All of those things worked really well for me.
30:59That and other things when we set up MTV Networks,
31:02which I ran for 17 years, which was Nickelodeon,
31:05Comedy Central, VH1.
31:10Nick at Night, TV Land.
31:12You took me on my first ever private plane.
31:15That's right. Do you remember that?
31:16I remember that.
31:17You had done, just done, I think in 2002,
31:19you had just done the Video Music Awards hosting for us.
31:21Yeah.
31:22You were heading to L.A. for the summer,
31:23and we were heading.
31:24It was like we were all on a summer trip,
31:25and we had a plane at the time.
31:27Yeah.
31:28Corporate plane. That was living.
31:29So we were off on...
31:30I mean, MTV was all the cool kids.
31:31I mean, that was where everyone wanted to hang out with anyone
31:33from MTV.
31:34We have people that work on our crew from MTV.
31:36Yeah, they're everywhere.
31:37Yeah.
31:38It was the coolest.
31:39And I go, a private plane? Are you sure, Tom?
31:41And you're like, come on.
31:42It was you and Judy McGrath.
31:44And I was like, what do we do on a private plane?
31:47I think I was like...
31:49Well, you had a guitar and a lot of CDs.
31:50Yeah.
31:51We were doing Skynyrd and Neil Young.
31:52Yes, I was playing music.
31:53It was like...
31:54I thought it was like a party time.
31:55It was.
31:56I was like, let's pop champagne,
31:57let's go for it.
31:58I'm like, private plane, let's go.
31:59And you're like, I guess so, Jimmy.
32:01You were very nice to me.
32:02You humored me, yeah.
32:03It was a good flight.
32:04We wanted to end.
32:05But what do you remember about the fun?
32:08I feel like those days aren't really around,
32:11where they had corporate jets going around.
32:13MTV was a blast.
32:15Like, I loved going in to, like, rehearse,
32:18and everyone loved each other,
32:19and everyone was making jokes and laughing.
32:22It was like a party.
32:23Yeah, we had a unique company.
32:25I mean, we had probably the worst-dressed group of people
32:27going to any building in Manhattan.
32:30Yeah.
32:31There was no one worse dressed than us,
32:32but it was about, you know, taking risks,
32:33pushing the envelope, doing edgy stuff.
32:35If something didn't work, do something else.
32:36And it was fun.
32:37Some kids had MTV, and I was so jealous,
32:39because I did not have MTV.
32:41But I wanted my MTV.
32:44Which must have changed everything for the channel.
32:47Someone saying, I want my MTV.
32:49Well, you know, when we started, cable was mostly just out
32:52in the Midwest.
32:53New York, L.A. didn't have any cable.
32:55And we were only in a few cable systems.
32:57And cable operators didn't want to add MTV,
32:59because it cost 10 cents a home.
33:01They didn't want to pay that.
33:02They thought it was like, you know,
33:04they were kind of Elvis fans.
33:05They thought we were like a tool of the devil or whatnot.
33:08So they wouldn't add us.
33:09But we knew, because I would go out into these markets,
33:12that the kids, the music fans, the people who love music,
33:15were crazy about us.
33:17We decided, because we sort of needed a Hail Mary pass,
33:19we were going to run out of money.
33:21The only way we were going to get more cable system
33:23was to go over their heads right to the fans.
33:25So we ripped off the I Want My Mate Bow campaign.
33:29Oh, yeah.
33:30It was an oatmeal cereal in the 60s.
33:32I remember that.
33:33So we had to get...
33:34We decided we'd do that,
33:35and we needed three big rock stars.
33:37So Mick Jagger, Pete Townsend, and David Bowie.
33:41We needed to get them holding our logo,
33:44sort of validating us, saying,
33:46I want my MTV.
33:47Call your cable company and want my MTV.
33:49So it really worked.
33:50I pulled the David Bowie card.
33:52How did you get Bowie to do it?
33:54Well, I asked his manager, and she said,
33:57well, he's skiing in Stad, Switzerland.
34:00Okay.
34:01I said, all right.
34:02We're heading there.
34:03You know, I took a 35-millimeter crew.
34:05He'd do it, but he wanted to ski down the mountain
34:07and then do a swish.
34:08He had it all worked out.
34:09He was in his Let's Dance phase.
34:10He really looked great.
34:11Yeah.
34:12So Bowie did it.
34:13Bowie did it.
34:14He came down the mountain.
34:15He did it.
34:16And it was a memorable day for me,
34:18because at the end of the day, he said,
34:20well, what are you doing later, Tom?
34:22Like, you know, I'm living like in a youth hostel with the crew.
34:24Yeah.
34:25I said nothing.
34:26He says, why don't you come to the Palace Hotel
34:28and we'll take a sauna together?
34:30You and David Bowie?
34:31Yeah.
34:32You got to be kidding me.
34:33Yeah.
34:34I'm in.
34:35Let's do it.
34:36I'm in.
34:37So I went back and told everyone else.
34:38I said, you losers.
34:39I'll see you later.
34:40Yeah, of course.
34:41I'm going to hang with Bowie, man.
34:43So we go to the spa.
34:44You know, this is like the Grand Am Hotel in Stad.
34:48And I meet him.
34:49We got towels down.
34:50We go into the sauna.
34:51And there's only one other person there.
34:52He's up in this, like, little shelf up in the top.
34:55And I sort of squint.
34:57It's Paul McCartney.
34:59What are you talking about?
35:00Yeah.
35:01So the three of us sat there for, like, I don't know,
35:0320 minutes or so.
35:04I'm throwing water on the rocks.
35:05And they're asking...
35:07Only you could this happen.
35:09They're asking me questions like, what is MTV?
35:11Yeah.
35:12No one even knows what it is at this point.
35:14It's really in the game, yeah.
35:15I mean, but what you've done for music and pop culture.
35:19I mean, the first reality show was MTV.
35:22The real world.
35:23Fox had just started the Fox Network.
35:25And they were doing Beverly Hills, 90210.
35:27We should, you know, young people like to see...
35:29Let's do a soap opera ourselves.
35:31But I looked at the budget and said, you know,
35:34we have to have writers.
35:36Yeah, yeah.
35:37We have to pay people.
35:38Yes, you have to pay people.
35:39We couldn't afford it.
35:40So, they went back.
35:41Doug Herzog went back to Bruno Murray.
35:43They were these two producers.
35:45And they said, well, you know, let's just stick...
35:48Put them in a loft down in Soho
35:50and stick some cameras in the wall
35:52and let's watch them live their lives.
35:53And then we'll do...
35:54We'll post it together into episodes.
35:56Oh, my gosh.
35:57And that was sort of the birth of reality TV.
35:59Wow.
36:00And, you know...
36:02Amazing.
36:04I can't tell you, everybody, if you want a great book
36:06with great stories in here, and it's just positive
36:09and also shows the struggles and what you actually go through
36:12and just being a good guy, what you get.
36:15I mean, you really are a good guy.
36:17And I just wanted to say this on camera.
36:18You always supported me.
36:19And thank you so much for everything.
36:21Well, it's a two-way street.
36:22Thank you, Jimmy.
36:23Best for the best.

36:37With more destruction.
36:39I'm hoping...
36:41...kind of frame to make two-door conclusions.
