00:00My name is Jerry Huynh, and I am the short circuit director for Jinghua, which translates
00:05to Flower in the Mirror.
00:08When I first came up with the idea for the short, it was really just about reconnecting
00:12with a part of myself and reconnecting with my culture and who I am and Kung Fu, my past,
00:17my family, all this stuff.
00:19When I went to Chinese school as a kid, they used to make us do calligraphy.
00:23In trying to connect with that, I got this set, and I did what I could to try to relearn
00:27it.
00:28And that's such a huge part of the short, that's such a huge part of the inspiration.
00:31While I'm doing all this rediscovery of my own culture, my grandfather passed away.
00:40And then a month later, my grandmother passed away.
00:43And then a few months later, my cousin passed away.
00:47And all of this, while I'm preparing all of this, there was no way I could make a project
00:55about my past, about me that didn't speak to my family's experience.
01:03This is kind of my emotional reaction to what I saw.
01:06I think the amazing thing about the crew is that everyone was really supportive of that
01:12idea.
01:13Because it's about something really difficult that you went through.
01:16And everyone was so open with showing that and accepting the fact that this is a really
01:21hard thing to do and tell and say and trying a new way to do it.
01:25And I'm so thankful for that.
01:26And I'm so thankful for that.
01:32And I'm so thankful for that.
01:47And I can see you.
01:55Oh, my God.
02:25Oh, my God.
02:55Oh, my God.
03:25Oh, my God.
