00:00I'm Tom Morris, Jr., and this is Fugitives Caught on Tape.
00:22This guy has no regard for anybody else in the road.
00:25First up, we're in Lone Oak County, Arkansas, where state
00:55troopers are in pursuit of a man wanted for assault who fled a traffic stop and is now
01:00driving dangerously.
01:02Earlier, Trooper Jacob Price reported a car driving slowly in the far left lane of a highway
01:08for several minutes, violating Arkansas's continued driving law.
01:13Got passed on the ride.
01:16The trooper initiated a traffic stop and the driver pulled over.
01:21But when he exited his cruiser, Trooper Price noticed that the driver had his foot on the
01:26brake.
01:27Don't do it, bro.
01:31Put the keys on top of the car.
01:33But the suspect did not comply and fled the scene.
01:36The trooper hurried back to his cruiser and called it in.
01:43Trying to catch up to him.
01:45Looks like a white male.
01:47Got a tattoo on his face.
01:50It's about a quarter mile in front of me now.
01:52The gray Mercedes.
01:56Traffic's light.
01:57I'm at 120, trying to catch up.
01:58It's passing on his shoulder.
01:59About 177 looks back.
02:01As the pursuit continues, and the suspect increases his speed,
02:07He's better, 140.
02:10Trooper Crossland goes in for a pit maneuver, and the suspect cuts over and exits the highway.
02:17But Crossland tries again on the ramp.
02:31As they exit the highway, the trooper bumps the suspect,
02:37Who nearly slams into this sign.
02:43Then, on his third attempt, the trooper spins out as the suspect recovers and pulls away.
02:51But Trooper Crossland isn't done yet.
02:54He manages to get his cruiser back on the road,
02:57And follows the suspect into the opposite lane of traffic.
03:01Then, about a minute later, with the fugitive's reckless driving continuing to endanger the public,
03:22Police make a risky move.
03:24Yeah, the heck yeah.
03:31The trooper's pit maneuver sends the suspect spinning off the road,
03:43Where he crashes into this sign.
03:45Additional trooper's arrive,
03:51And quickly get the suspect in cuffs.
03:57You suck it up, bitch.
03:59I ain't f***ing doing nothing.
04:00Shut your mouth.
04:01Shut your freaking mouth.
04:04Giddy-ass.
04:04The suspect was ID'd as 35-year-old Dominic Copenhaver.
04:15Copenhaver has a criminal history in multiple states,
04:19Including an open warrant out of Maryland for assault.
04:22He was charged with driving while license suspended,
04:26No proof of insurance,
04:27Reckless driving,
04:29Fleeing,
04:30Disorderly conduct,
04:31And criminal mischief.
04:33Copenhaver was released on bond,
04:35But after he failed to appear at a hearing,
04:37A warrant was issued for his arrest.
04:40He's pled not guilty to all charges,
04:42And his case is pending.
04:44Next, we're in Ferndale, Michigan,
04:49Where local PD are in pursuit of a suspect,
04:53Who just stole a police cruiser,
04:55And is driving dangerously,
04:56On the opposite side of the road.
05:00Earlier,
05:01Officer Kevin Jerome was at a bus stop,
05:03Speaking to a man who called police,
05:05About an unrelated incident.
05:07That's when,
05:08Another man at the bus stop,
05:09Got officer Jerome's attention.
05:11Hey, you got in your car.
05:14What?
05:15He's got in your car.
05:216-0 Ferndale,
05:22A girl just got in 6-0 and took off.
05:25Don't call him Woodward.
05:28A woman,
05:29Hopped into the officer's cruiser,
05:31With his duty rifle inside,
05:33And sped away.
05:36I'm not the way in there.
05:386-0, what do you have there?
05:40A black female,
05:41Walked across Woodward,
05:42I was talking to the gentleman,
05:43At the bus stop.
05:44She got in the driver's seat,
05:46And took off.
05:46Northbound on Woodward.
05:47I don't believe it!
05:49Okay, so we have a fully marked,
05:516-0,
05:52Stolen,
05:52Northbound,
05:53Woodward from Diamond.
05:54A firm.
05:56I've never seen somebody ask me.
05:59You're gone for a long time,
06:01But I don't know what you're saying.
06:02Oh!
06:03Now,
06:04The dash cam in officer Jerome's stolen cruiser,
06:07Records the suspect's every move,
06:10As she runs a red light,
06:12Nearly hits another car,
06:13And then stops just short,
06:15Of hitting a group of pedestrians,
06:17Crossing the street.
06:18Before long,
06:21Additional officers spot her getting off the highway.
06:25Okay, getting a new report,
06:26That she's south on 75,
06:28Approaching 9 miles.
06:30She just got off on 9 miles.
06:32Just got off on 9 miles.
06:35Exit 75 at 9 miles.
06:38Now, on local streets,
06:40The suspect drives in the middle turn lane.
06:43As more officers join the pursuit,
06:54The fugitive's erratic driving continues to pose a real danger to the public.
06:59Officers attempt to box her in,
07:02But the suspect evades their moves,
07:06And speeds away.
07:09Wait,
07:09We're locked in for a second.
07:13After blowing through another red light,
07:15And speeding past this van,
07:18The fugitive drives in the opposite lane,
07:21Where several cars are forced to pull over,
07:24To avoid a head-on collision.
07:26As she speeds toward a busy intersection,
07:34The suspect somehow,
07:36Makes it through unscathed.
07:38Until,
07:39Crashed out.
07:46Stoleful.
07:49She slams into the back of this large SUV.
07:55Okay, 47 miles.
07:56Stoleful.
07:57After the crash,
07:58The suspect is able to slow roll the cruiser up this block.
08:02But she doesn't get far,
08:04As officers Justin Harwood,
08:06And John Heath,
08:07Quickly catch up with her.
08:11Airbags up!
08:12Are you okay?
08:14Get the f*** out of the car now!
08:17Grab it, grab it, grab it, get it hot!
08:19Come here!
08:20Get on the ground!
08:21During the struggle,
08:22Officer Harwood's body camera,
08:24Becomes detached,
08:25And falls to the ground.
08:27We're nearly in custody.
08:30Give me your pants!
08:33What do you got on you shouldn't have?
08:34Do you know how many lives you just put in danger?
08:38You know how many people just put in danger doing this?
08:42Unbelievable.
08:43Who are you?
08:45I'm there.
08:46Customs, why?
08:47Where do you live?
08:47How old are you?
08:48Having fun.
08:49Having fun?
08:50The suspect was ID'd as 24-year-old Destiny Hawkins,
08:55Who just two hours prior to stealing the cruiser,
08:58Was in court for a stolen property case.
09:01Hawkins was hit with a felony charge of auto theft,
09:04Plus fleeing, eluding, and unlawful driving away.
09:08She pled guilty to all charges,
09:10And was sentenced to three years probation.
09:12As a result of this incident,
09:16The Ferndale Police Department had their squad cars
09:18Outfitted with anti-theft systems,
09:20Preventing anyone from illegally driving them ever again.
09:25No officers or civilians were seriously injured during the pursuit.
09:32Next, we're in Excelsior Springs, Missouri,
09:35Where officers are in pursuit of a suspect
09:37Whose dangerous driving has caused multiple accidents,
09:41And forced several drivers off the road.
09:44Earlier, Excelsior Springs PD received multiple calls
09:48About a truck pulling a wide load,
09:51And a man driving erratically,
09:53Sending other vehicles into ditches.
09:55Officer Johanna Robertson and Sergeant Kyle Craven
09:58Tracked down the truck,
10:00Which was towing a double-wide mobile home,
10:03And taking up most of the road.
10:06Calling a house,
10:08Excelsior Springs,
10:08In pursuit of a white,
10:10Ram hauling a house on 69,000 pounds,
10:1340 miles now,
10:14Attaching Cameron Road,
10:16Clay County.
10:17Now, officers activate their lights and sirens,
10:20But the driver does not pull over.
10:23So further up the road,
10:25Officer Andrew Stock gets ready to deploy stop sticks
10:28At this intersection.
10:29I got sticks.
10:30The stick deployment is unsuccessful as the fugitive and his double-wide load somehow manages to avoid them.
10:51Officer Stock then joins in the pursuit.
10:54Just as the truck makes a left turn, and the tail end of the mobile home dips down into a ditch.
11:03It's sparking blood now underneath.
11:07The suspect's truck seems to be disabled, and the officers spring into action.
11:13A passenger surrenders, and is quickly placed in the back of a squad car.
11:19While officers struggle to detain the driver.
11:21A passenger surrenders, and is quickly placed in the back of a squad car.
11:31While officers struggle to detain the driver.
11:47Officer Robertson and Sergeant Craven walk him over to a cruiser.
12:17As officers are patting down and speaking with the driver, the passenger yells to him from the back of the cruiser.
12:43The driver, 38-year-old Robert Matthew McKenzie, has a criminal history including convictions for theft and failure to register a motor vehicle.
13:04He was treated for his injuries and taken back into custody.
13:07McKenzie was charged with resisting arrest, pled guilty, and was sentenced to 180 days in jail suspended, plus two years probation.
13:16The passenger, who's also the owner of the mobile home, was not charged in this incident.
13:23Excelsior Springs police reported that, remarkably, no one was injured during this wild highway pursuit.
13:30Next, we're in Atlanta, Georgia, where police are in pursuit of a fugitive wanted for violating his probation in an assault and weapons possession conviction.
13:43Earlier, an off-duty officer recognized 25-year-old Damien Davenport when he spotted him riding a bicycle.
13:52Aside from the assault and weapons convictions, Davenport was also a suspect in a recent machete attack.
14:00Now, officers Arian Miles and Malikia Ballard, along with Sergeant Sean Houston and Anthony Tejeron John, respond to the location and close in on Davenport near a highway overpass.
14:14But the suspect reverses course and pedals away.
14:18Two of the cruisers make U-turns, take a pursuit, and immediately witness Davenport doing something suspicious.
14:31He just dropped the machete at the intersection back there.
14:34A trailing officer exits their vehicle, picks up the machete, and then rejoins the chase.
14:41Up ahead, two of the officers close in on Davenport, attempting to block him in.
14:48But the suspect narrowly avoids their trap and rides off again.
14:54They give it another try.
14:59But again, the suspect manages to escape, weaving dangerously into the opposite lane of traffic before moving onto the sidewalk.
15:08Officers react quickly to block his path.
15:11But suddenly, he disappears from view.
15:16This officer opens their door and sees the bike on the ground.
15:29But it doesn't take long before officers have their fugitive in custody.
15:33In addition to the machete he discarded during the pursuit, officers also found a knife on Davenport.
15:41He was transported to a hospital, treated for some minor injuries, and then booked into Fulton County Jail.
15:48No officers were injured during the incident.
15:50For that day's events, Davenport was charged with riding a bicycle on the right side of the roadway,
15:56willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, and other charges.
16:01He accepted a deal pleading guilty to all of his new charges in exchange for the court waiving any costs or fines.
16:08He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, with 60 days credit for time served, followed by one year probation.
16:15As for the machete case, Davenport was charged with battery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife, and that case is pending.
16:25For his assault and weapons case, Davenport's probation was revoked, and he was sentenced to six months in jail.
16:32Next, we're in Akron, Ohio, where police are chasing an unusual suspect wanted for causing a public disturbance.
16:43Earlier, dispatch received several 911 calls from concerned drivers about a mysterious figure lurking on the side of a local highway.
16:53Akron 911 with the location of your emergency.
16:56I'm driving on Route 8. I'm not sure. It's either a deer or a dog. It's alive.
17:03They just crossed the highway into the median. A couple people almost lost control.
17:08Hi, I'm on Route 8, and there's like a lamb that just walked out in the middle of the five-lane traffic.
17:15All these cars are spinning.
17:17Did you say a lamb?
17:18At first I thought it was a doodle.
17:20Yeah, doesn't look like we're getting another call about this, actually.
17:22Are you having an emergency?
17:24It's a loose dog on the Route 8. He's sitting on the side of the, on the shoulder.
17:30Officers were quickly dispatched to the area where they find the four-legged fugitive walking along the median side of the highway.
17:43The officers encounter a lone female goat, and before long, they make their move.
17:49He's drawn in.
17:50But so does the goat.
17:51Vehicles whizz by, some nearly hitting the lost doe.
17:57Oh, God.
17:59Somehow, she avoids getting hit and returns to the median.
18:02Come here.
18:03Come here.
18:04And this time, instead of running, the officers calmly walk toward her.
18:09But just as they start to get close.
18:11Come here.
18:13Oh.
18:14She makes another, even more dangerous move.
18:18Oh, God.
18:20While running along the median, the goat suddenly darts back into traffic, stopping abruptly in the far right lane and almost getting hit by this car.
18:31Come here.
18:32Come here.
18:33And then, holding back to the median and barely avoiding another speeding car.
18:40Soon, backup arrives and helps block traffic as officers give it another try.
18:47This time with a collar and some rope.
18:50And after one more failed attempt, this officer is finally able to corral the wayward nanny in a wooded area on the shoulder of the highway.
19:06With some additional help from a good Samaritan, officers quickly get a collar around the goat and after taking a moment to comfort the anxious animal, they move her to the back of a cruiser and celebrate.
19:18Now you guys have to interview him.
19:19Freedom is random.
19:20Later, a local rescue group picked up the goat and took it to a farm and gave it a new and very appropriate name.
19:36And by all accounts, Fugitive is adjusting well to her new home, despite its bad experience on the land.
19:44In fact, after the video of Fugitive's adventure corralled the spot on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it went viral.
19:52Whoa!
19:53Extending her 15 minutes of fame.
19:56Oh, God.
19:58Look more fun!
20:00ping science…
20:06Thanks for watching.
20:07Fugitive caught on tape.
20:08I'm Tom Morris, Jr, and we'll see you next time.
