00:00This is the story of one of the best-known of all the saints, Patrick.
00:25His story is a mixture of fact and legend, as it is with so many other saints.
00:33The man who brought the Christian faith to the land of Hibernia, now known as Ireland,
00:38came from across the channel in Roman Britain.
00:42He was a Roman citizen during the period when the empire was close to its ragged end.
00:55His name was Patrick.
01:11He was born into the Christian faith.
01:14He was a young man who did not know the true God.
01:19But he had no idea about salvation.
01:22Well, if I'm causing any trouble...
01:26Stand behind me.
01:31You can keep your old hikes.
01:33We're here for your star chest.
01:36Go to aggressive Griswold.
01:51Ask me go to aggressive Griswold.
01:57They were the Gales, the pagan inhabitants of Hibernia.
02:11The Romans never conquered them, and they considered the Gales barbarians.
02:24Not a bad day's work.

03:14Who will rescue us?
03:16You're citizens of the Empire.
03:18What Empire?
03:21No one's coming to rescue us.
03:24This is our life now.
03:26What's left of it.
03:42Follow me.
03:50Sit down.
03:55Sit down.
03:56Sit down.
04:16Sit down.
04:20Sit down.
04:43Not you he's hungry. Why are you punishing him?
05:13I don't know.
05:43I am Milhu, but you will call me master.
06:01I am glad that you are here, for you are young, you are strong, for the next weeks you will
06:08sleep in the hut beyond.
06:10You will do as I tell you to do, and if I say sit, sit.
06:17Do I have protection as a citizen of Rome?
06:35And what kind of protection do you wish for, oh citizen of Rome?
06:47Is it for yourself, or for your fellow Roman citizens?
06:57Or are you thinking that your head might stand on the highest pike?
07:03That will be my decision when the time comes.
07:06Or are you thinking that Roman soldiers might come and rescue you?
07:13Well, the answer is no.
07:17You will speak what I tell you to speak.
07:19You will shepherd one of my flocks.
07:25You will shear the sheep in spring.
07:29These will be your principal tasks as a shepherd.
07:32You will be allowed to kill one sheep each season to feed yourself.
07:38Just one.
07:38If I find that you have stolen from me, you will be sacrificed to Aron, the god of the underworld.
07:51Do you understand me?
07:54Now, sit.
07:57Sit.

08:38You. Come on.
09:08What are you doing? Taking your sheep for the first season. But why? Because I can. But what am I going to eat? Eat the dried meat. There. That's where you take the sheep.
09:38The sheep.

11:20The sheep.
11:21I don't know.
11:51Oh, my God.
12:21They were the forest dwellers.
12:29These were pagans who survived on what they could forage.
12:51They were the forest.
13:21They were the forest.
13:51They were the forest.
14:21They were the forest.
14:51They were the forest.
14:53Months after he arrived in Hibernia, the love of God increased within him.
14:59His sense of awe before God.
15:04His spirit was moved, and he started to pray, day and night.
15:18He was the forest.
15:32He was the forest.
15:46He was the forest.
15:48He was the forest.
16:02He was the forest.
16:04He was the forest.

16:48As time went by, the hunger in Hibernia grew worse and Patrick had to make a choice.
17:04I offer you this sheep.
17:17We have thanks to you.
17:28May joy rise up to greet you at every dawn.

23:48My heart is bursting, my lord.
23:52Bursting.
23:54Patrick.
24:11Patrick.
24:12Now it is time for you to return home.
24:22A ship is made ready for you.
24:25Go to the shore.
24:28May the tides bear you safely on your journey.
24:41May you think of us often as we will think of you.
24:43He found his salvation in the land of his captivity in Hibernia.
25:03The revelation came true.
25:06There was a ship,
25:08and after six years in bondage,
25:11Patrick returned to his homeland.
25:13I became a shepherd.
25:38To the pagan,
25:42To the pagans who took you?
25:44No, not the ones that took me.
25:46The ones that foraged for their meals,
25:48who've been driven into the forest.
25:50And I tried to help them to open their hearts to the Lord our God.
25:56My dear son,
25:57you have been through a terrible trial.
25:59But that was where my heart opened to God, Mother.
26:02The trial was the first step in the road.
26:05Now you're home.
26:06And you can return to yourself.
26:09Mother, there are souls to save everywhere.
26:13Your duty is to your mother.
26:15My greatest duty is to God.
26:17So it is for all of us who have received this word.
26:21Father, I will no longer look past any man or woman who crosses my path.
26:39Father, I will no longer look past any man or woman who crosses my path.
26:49Father, I will no longer look past any man or woman who crosses my path.
27:05I've come to serve God.
27:07Father, I see that we have no choice other than to give all of ourselves to God.
27:20Which means to give all of ourselves to those most in need.
27:23I saw it every minute of the day during my years as a slave.
27:26I was in Hibernia.
27:28I was herding sheep for the pagans who took me away from my home.
27:33And the people came to me from out of the darkness.
27:36And they cried out for God's love.
27:38Even though they didn't know how to say it.
27:41And I gave them whatever I could.
27:43Of my food.
27:44Of my clothing.
27:45Of the animals I guarded.
27:47I gave them my love.
27:49God's love.
27:51There is nothing else.
27:57Would you admit me?
28:01Yes.
28:05And how will I begin?
28:07Will I bring food to the people?
28:09Or will I take care of the sick?
28:12You will begin serving God right now.
28:17By sweeping the floor.
28:21Beyond the adesso.
28:27contained nothing else.
28:31Deadly and deadly.
28:42Where is girls?
28:44To be является well.
28:46Out there not to be flock.
28:49Examine your heart.
28:55What is unspoken within you?
28:59I have no answer.
29:02But you do.
29:04You're the only one with the answer.
29:07Let it speak within you.
29:10How long will it take?
29:19You're a heartless, godless hypocrite.
29:29It's always the sin of pride with you.
29:32You speak of love, but never from love.
29:34We're a community of God, of common faith.
29:37And you always complain about every task that's required of you for the community.
29:43My brothers, I am the worst sinner of all.
29:47Pride, again.
29:48But I mean it.
29:49Because I am a prideful man.
29:53And I apologize to you, my brother, for my harsh words.
29:56But my pride comes from a swelling heart.
29:59And every moment that I'm not doing the work of God for others.
30:02The ones who always come knocking on our doors.
30:05I feel the time is wasted.
30:08Patrick.
30:08Patrick.
30:10I count one sheep missing from our flock.
30:14You will pray in your dormitory throughout your waking hours.
30:18And I am now telling you that I will be made bishop.
30:30I have decided to appoint our brother Patrick as abbot.
30:36Your grace.
30:39How can this be?
30:42After we've heard this man, for hours of argument, confessed before us to the sin of pride.
30:47And after you've just accused him of giving away one of our sheep.
30:50And now he's to become a new abbot.
30:52How can this be?
30:53That will be for one reason and one reason alone.
30:59Patrick is argumentative.
31:01Stubborn.
31:03And overflowing with pride.
31:05But his faith is abiding.
31:08And it is endless.
31:13Dear Lord, we give you thanks.
31:15We will always offer up our hearts towards you and your glory.
31:19In your name we pray.
31:22Amen.
31:23We beg you to come back and walk among us again.
31:38The one who gave his life for you.
31:40He it is who speaks in you.
31:43Come back to us, holy boy.
31:46Find your way back to the land you love.
31:49Where you found your heart.
31:50Come back to us.
32:20My name is Patrick.
32:28I am a deacon of the Christian church.
32:31And I have returned to bring the faith to Hibernia.
32:35Returned?
32:36I was a Roman slave.
32:39Captured as a young man.
32:42And brought across the sea to this village to serve Milku.
32:45Six years later, after tending to his sheep in the far hills, I made my way home.
32:54I escaped.
32:57And you returned?
32:59Yes.
33:01To pay for my freedom.
33:03I have no memory of you.
33:09But I'm happy to oblige.
33:12You will pay me with your fine Christian head.
33:18Now.
33:20Down on your knees.
33:22So eager to die.
33:33Ready to die.
33:36Always.
33:38Because I have my God and my Saviour by my side.
33:42Within me and without me.
33:43Whatever punishment you lay upon me, whatever you do to me and to my flesh, you can't really kill me.
33:52God is with me.
33:55The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
33:57So, you came here to die?
34:03I returned here to Hibernia.
34:05To bring you the great gift of Jesus and his teachings.
34:09And the promise of eternal life.
34:12For all of us.
34:14That includes you.
34:17God has nothing but love for you.
34:21And so do I.
34:22Oh.
34:23That is so good to hear.
34:27Cronan.
34:30Offered his head.
34:33Now.
34:52Do it now.
34:54Now!
34:57I will not harm a hair on that man's head.
35:20Nor will you.
35:21No.
35:21No.
35:21No.
35:21No.
35:21No.
35:22No.
35:22No.
35:23No.
35:23No.
35:24No.
35:25No.
35:25No.
35:26No.
35:27No.
35:28Who has the heart to kill this Christian?
35:32Who?
35:34Is there anyone?
35:36Do I have to kill him myself?
35:38Let's go!
36:04Why are you crying, brother?
36:08Why did you come back here?
36:12To bring you into the light of God.
36:38You are the one who took care of these people.
36:46I don't think so.
36:48I got to know the light of God.
36:50I got to know the light of God.
36:52I'm going to know the light of God.
36:54I'm not letting you know the light of God.
36:56I'm not going to be that light of God.
36:58I'll see you next time.
37:00Bye-bye.
37:02Bye-bye.
37:04Bye-bye.
37:06Bye-bye.
37:08Bye-bye.
37:26It was where the water suddenly started flowing, so many years before.
37:38I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
37:54You're forgiven.
37:56All is forgiven in the light of God.
38:02Dear Lord, on this sacred site we will build our church.
38:07The first of many.
38:09And now, with this holy water, I will baptize anyone who will come forth and walk in the way of the Lord.
38:23Good woman.
38:25Bless you.
38:27I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
38:33You answered my call.
38:35Of course I did.
38:37God watches over us all.
38:39He sent a son.
38:41He sent a son.
38:43I will baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
38:47I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
38:51You answered my call.
38:57Of course I did.
38:59God watches over us all.
39:03He sent a son who lived among people many years ago.
39:09And his son's name was Jesus.
39:13And he died.
39:15But then he returned from death.
39:19Just like you.
39:23God.
39:24This leaf is the Father.
39:26God.
39:27And this leaf next to it is the Son, Jesus Christ.
39:32And this third leaf is the Holy Ghost.
39:35There they are, all three of them, on separate leaves.
39:40But they are together, on the same stem.
39:44Because they are separate.
39:47But they are one.
40:03We found a wonderful place for the church, didn't we?
40:07Yes.
40:08We did.
40:29Patrick returned to Ireland in 433 A.D.
40:33It was said that in the decades that followed, he established 700 churches and ordained 5,000 priests.
40:41By the time of Patrick's death in 461, what had once been a pagan stronghold was transformed into a beacon of the Christian faith.
41:03We took the bare bones of the story of St. Patrick, and we tried to make a tale of a spiritual awakening and a spiritual discipline, which led to his power as a leader in the church.
41:17I just, I love that we see somebody coming to spiritual revelation, really, out of the hellscape of slavery.
41:28He kind of came to God through those two roads that so many of us do, through nature.
41:35First, being a shepherd of the animals, and then through prayer.
41:40Prayer and the solitude, the beauty of the solitude.
41:45And the only one he can share with is God.
41:49And the care of the sheep is the metaphor for the whole thing.
41:52Yeah, and he goes back, which is incredible.
41:54Yeah, he goes back.
41:55He could have just stayed at home and said, that was a terrible time.
41:58I was a slave, right?
41:59That's right.
42:00He didn't have to go back to Hibernia, but he did.
42:01Yeah, and so that, to me, is the part that's the most moving.
42:04You mentioned solitude.
42:05I love that this episode has so few words compared to some of the others.
42:08That's right.
42:09He's by himself.
42:11We think of a missionary as shouting from the housetops, urging people to come to the gospel.
42:16But he carries this faith from the continent onto this island inside him.
42:21He bears it within him in solitude, but it's still so powerful that it keeps him alive,
42:27the way it's kept so many imprisoned and enslaved people alive.
42:29Right.
42:30And he feels sent, which is what a missionary is.
42:33Missio means to be sent.
42:34He feels sent to go back to Ireland and preach by not only words, but by his example.
42:40He must have been incredibly charismatic, too.
42:43And, you know, like St. Peter before him, a tough guy as well.
42:46He apparently was a tough guy and was hard-headed and caused a lot of arguments.
42:50In religious communities, we say the saints and the martyrs, the martyrs are the ones that have to live with the saints.
42:55You know, saints are tough people.
42:57They're demanding, right?
42:58And they have to be.
42:59And they can be tough to live with and tough to work with and work for.
43:03After Patrick created or helped create the church in Ireland, Ireland was cut off from the rest of Europe.
43:09That period of becoming Christian and monasteries actually developing.
43:15In other words, there's two or three people first, and it becomes bigger and 20, and then they make a little monastery.
43:20And then that monastery took upon them all the literature and knowledge of what was left of the Western Roman Empire.
43:28One monk, one book transferring line by line, by hand.
43:32They're the ones who saved so much of Western civilization.
43:36And so they had that power, too, the power of knowledge.
43:39St. Patrick is certainly instrumental.
43:41And as you were saying, Marty, the development of the monasteries is key to understand Irish Catholicism.
43:46I think what's so interesting is the influence that the Irish church, the Irish Catholic Church, had on the rest of the world, particularly the United States.
43:54Right?
43:55So not only Irish immigrants coming, but the clergy and the bishops being largely Irish.
44:00That small island, right, has this outsized influence on the rest of the church, and I think still does today.
44:06We invented a kind of turning point, actually was inspired by a scene from Inmar Bergman's film, The Virgin Spring, where this act of brutality is followed by a signal from the divine.
44:19A sign of grace that kind of leads to redemption, and that is the water from the stone.
44:23You know, in making films and literature, there's a tradition of sudden spiritual enlightenment.
44:28Fiction and cinema, I think they can give us a model for considering spiritual possibilities in our lives.
44:37William James, he distinguished between once-born people and twice-born.
44:41And the twice-born is the strong convert of the kind that you're describing here.
44:45Yes.
44:46And then Flannery O'Connor said, well, if you're a dramatic artist, you're going to be drawn to the twice-born.
44:50Because the shortest line between two points is a sudden, violent episode.
44:55That's right.
44:56A dramatic change in a person's life that happens through these experiences is just much more dramatic
45:02when it happens to the man being knocked off his horse or what happens in this episode.
45:06Is it artistic license? No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:11Oh, my Jesus!
45:16Oh, my Jesus!
45:18Oh, my Jesus!
45:23Oh, my Jesus!
