00:00These are Stories of the Saints.
00:30John the Baptist was born to be a holy messenger.
00:43His mother, Elizabeth, was descended from Aaron, who was the brother of Moses and the first priest of the Israelites.
00:52His father, Zechariah, was a Levite, a descendant of Levite.
00:57He assisted the priests in worship.
01:00So, John knew his scripture, and he knew religious practice.
01:17Amen.
01:18Do you remember last week when we were on our way to the temple, when we saw the Sadducees?
01:33Yes.
01:41Out of our way.
01:43Move.
01:43The men dropped the money on the ground.
01:53Yes.
01:53Was that evil?
01:59Oh, yes.
02:00Was it as evil as old King Herod?
02:03That was a greater evil.
02:05Far greater.
02:06But he and the new Herod are Edomites, the converts to our faith.
02:11Converts?
02:12By the point of the sword.
02:15There are not the descendants of Abraham like us, so we can only pray that their wisdom and compassion increases.
02:20What made the Sadducees evil?
02:21What made the Sadducees evil?
02:23Which commandment did they not follow?
02:24The first.
02:26You shall worship no god but me.
02:29What god were them worshiping?
02:32Themselves.
02:32If you thought they did evil, then why did you smile at them?
02:40As a sign of respect.
02:43We are Levites.
02:44These men oversee the temple.
02:46But how can holy men do evil?
02:49The Torah tells us it always crouches in the doorway.
02:53But I still don't understand.
02:55If you thought they did evil, then why did you smile at them?
03:02The world of Jerusalem in the years when John came of age was just boiling over with political and spiritual tensions.
03:09I mean, there was widespread distrust of the Jewish power structure.
03:13In particular, the aristocratic Sadducees.
03:17People thought they were too accommodating to the Romans.
03:20Distrust of the Roman-appointed tetrarch, or regional ruler, Herod Antipas, was even greater.
03:32John searched for a path.
03:38But a path to what?
03:40Knowledge?
03:43Enlightenment?
03:46Truth?
03:48All of those things at once?
03:50You know, he had been trained to serve in the temple and ritualistic and ceremonial functions.
03:57But he walked away from it all, searching for a higher truth, which would be untainted by corrupt political calculations.
04:07There were others who had staked out a different spiritual path, shunning the cities and the temple worship, and just retreating to the wilderness.
04:19Good evening, brother.
04:23Good evening, brother.
04:25The Essenes lived communally near the caves of Qumran, and of course they're thought to have been the authors of the Dead Sea Squirts.
04:33You look hungry, huh, Thirsty?
04:44I thank you, brother.
04:48I have no food to offer you.
04:51I have some of my own.
04:52I have some of my own.
05:03I have some of my own.
05:09Really, thanks.
05:16Where are you coming from?
05:18Jerusalem.
05:21I see.
05:24And we're already traveling, too.
05:27I don't know.
05:28I don't know.
05:34You've walked away from something, then.
05:40It seems that it's towards something.
05:43I'm the son of a Levi, Zachariah.
05:46But he's been gone for some time now.
05:49He and, uh, my mother.
05:52Oh, yes.
05:54So you're Levi's.
05:55Will you follow your father's way?
05:59No.
06:01To be among the Sadducees and the Pharisees breaking bread with the Romans?
06:07No.
06:09No.
06:11I have to find another way.
06:16By going into the wilderness?
06:19You are saying yes to God.
06:23As far as the scholars?
06:25All men with authority and power become tingled.
06:32Their words.
06:34Their actions.
06:37Their thoughts.
06:38Do you live out here on your own?
06:45I live with my friends.
06:47My brothers.
06:49We all left as well, just like you.
06:53We choose to wait for the Messiah here.
06:56In the quiet.
06:57We choose to wait for the Messiah.
06:58We choose to wait for the Messiah.
06:59We choose to wait for the Messiah.
07:02Have you or your friends had a revelation of his coming?
07:04No.
07:07We just share the belief that it's right to live our lives in waiting for him.
07:10Some preach that he'll come soon.
07:16People can't believe what they like.
07:19We just devote our sins to his coming.
07:25Would you like more water?
07:26At this period in the long history of Judaism, belief in the coming of the Messiah was a bedrock of the faith.
07:46A human Messiah.
07:47Descendant of King David.
07:48A warrior who would redeem the Jewish people and restore the monarchy.
07:54That's what the people were waiting for.
08:09Woman, there's nothing to be afraid of.
08:14Do you hear me?
08:16I'm not the Roman.
08:18Are you a tax collector?
08:24I'm not.
08:26Look at me.
08:38You need to wait.
08:44Yes, I suppose I do.
08:45When you reach the edge of the Jordan's waters, go and stand in the river.
08:54What's that you're saying?
08:58It's what the Lord told Joshua.
09:00Who's Joshua?
09:01An ancient prophet.
09:04He led her people after Moses had gone to God.
09:08You're a learned man.
09:16I'm a Levine.
09:20Or I should say my father was.
09:24Tell me, why would the tax collectors pursue me?
09:30I'm a widow with the children.
09:33I keep them hidden away.
09:35What would the tax collectors want with me?
09:38The Romans?
09:39No.
09:40No.
09:40The Jews.
09:42They're collecting taxes for the temple, they say to us.
09:45Sent by Herod.
09:48Herod, the Adamite king.
09:52The hypocrite!
09:54Be careful.
09:56They're everywhere.
09:56Don't be afraid.
10:06What's your name?
10:08I'm not going to tell you my name or my town.
10:18Tell me.
10:21You think the Messiah is coming?
10:23I don't know.
10:31That's what everyone says when I ask.
10:36You know, my greatest wish
10:37is that the Messiah will come in my lifetime
10:41and lead us to freedom again.
10:45Yes.
10:53Let me help you with that.
10:54I'm fine.
11:03How will I know the Messiah when he comes?
11:11I don't know.
11:14You look like every other man, they say.
11:17I don't know.
11:17I wonder what will make him different.
11:28We'll know when he's among us.
11:35Let me help you with that.
11:38Goodbye.
11:39Don't forget your bait.
11:40Was the traditional Messiah what people actually need it?
11:55Or did they really need comfort and love?
11:59For people who can't wait.
12:06Who need comfort now.
12:09Who live among men who call themselves holy
12:11and who ignore them.
12:14Well, how long can they wait for the Messiah?
12:18Days?
12:20Months?
12:22Years?
12:23What would it do for them to wait
12:26endlessly?
12:44The answer was that they didn't have to wait for the Messiah.
12:49He was already here.
12:52Somewhere.
12:54And John felt he would help to call him forth.
13:16Repent.
13:18Turn back to God.
13:20His kingdom is here.
13:22Repent.
13:23The kingdom of God
13:27is here.
13:31Repentance.
13:33The Messiah is among us.
13:37Come and be baptized
13:38in the river Jordan
13:40and repent.
13:42What are you going on about?
13:44You're scaring the fish away.
13:46What are you doing, brother?
13:47Why are you standing in the Jordan?
13:48Why are you standing in the Jordan?
13:50God's kingdom is here.
13:53And I'm...
13:54I'm proclaiming the news.
13:58Come.
14:00Be baptized
14:01and repent.
14:06Come.
14:06Come.
14:06I'm here to announce the news of his coming.
14:12I'm here to announce the news of his coming.
14:15I'm here to announce the news of his coming.
14:20I'm here to announce the news of his coming.
14:25I'm here to announce the news of his coming.
14:31That's...
14:32That's my purpose.
14:37Come.
14:38Ritual bathing and immersion
14:53was an ancient Jewish practice
14:54of purification.
14:57And it was very much a part of the Levi tradition.
15:01So, naturally,
15:02John called on people
15:03to be baptized
15:04as an act of repentance.
15:06The foul stench of evil in Jerusalem
15:12comes from the palace
15:15of the Aramite convert
15:17Tetrarch
15:19who does the bidding of the Romans.
15:23Herod Antipas
15:25is a common adulterer
15:28married to his brother's wife
15:30with a harlot
15:33for a daughter.
15:35He's no better than his evil father.
15:40He
15:40and his
15:42whores
15:43claim to be Jews
15:45but they live in violation
15:48of our laws.
15:49I've come to be baptized.
16:01I love you now.
16:02Yeah.
16:04Why?
16:05To repent.
16:07No, really.
16:10Tell me
16:10are you Elijah?
16:13Are you the Messiah?

16:19You

16:26of Abraham.
16:27You came to be baptized

18:01Your Highness.
18:07And?
18:09We need to alert you to something.
18:12All right. Alert me.
18:15There's a man named John. He's a Levite.
18:18Born to the old man Zachariah.
18:20Don't tell me a tale. Alert me.
18:23This man John has gone to the wilderness.
18:26Get to the point.
18:27He's standing on the Jordan River and baptizing our people.
18:30Baptizing?
18:32Ceremonial cleansing.
18:35But of anyone who stands in the line. Anyone.
18:38He tells them to repent and prepare for the coming of the Messiah.
18:43So?
18:45Aren't the streets and alleys lined with preachers who say this and that?
18:51He preaches against you.
18:54What does he say about me?
18:57That you're an adulterer.
19:00And?
19:02That you marry the woman who divorced your own brother.
19:06And that her daughter is a harlot.
19:09Where is this man?
19:11He preaches by the river, Queen Radius.
19:14I'm Salome.
19:16Here's my mother.
19:18Ask pardon of my wife and our daughter.
19:25I'm sorry.
19:27Your pardon is accepted.
19:30This is trouble.
19:33I can't have my wife and our daughter spoken of that way to the people of Jerusalem.
19:37They're coming from all over Judea.
19:39To be baptized.
19:41I will send word to the Romans.
19:44This is my sister, Queen.
19:46This works for us.
19:47This is her daughter.
19:48It will be here.
19:49The disciples are also alive.
19:50They can't be blind.
19:52And they can't be blind.
19:54They're coming from these valleys.
19:55They can't be blind.
19:57Otherwise, you'll be blind.
19:58I have no NSW in their everyday properties.
20:00They can't be blind.
20:01They can't be blind.
20:02They're coming from the mountains.
20:03They can't be blind because we don't like it.
20:05They can not be blind.
20:06They can't be blind.
20:07They can't be blind.
20:08They can't be blind, or they can't be blind.
20:09They can't be blind before you.
20:10Baptize me.
20:30You're the one who should be baptizing me.
20:40Is this good?
21:01What else can be said?
21:06I think nothing else can be said.
21:10I just need to be done.
21:16Goodbye.
21:26Goodbye.
21:36I have come to baptize you with water.
21:56But this man who's now among us, he'll baptize you with fire.
22:06In his heart, John must have instantaneously seen and felt Jesus.
22:19Who and what he was is wholly different from the common idea of the Messiah.
22:24John was a man out of the old Jewish world with a righteous belief in justice.
22:30He stood firm and unwavering.
22:34But Jesus brought another force to the world.
22:37The force of comfort.
22:40Of forgiveness.
22:43Of redemption.
22:45Of love.
22:47I'm the one they call the Baptist.
22:54My name is John.
23:00Take me to see Herod.
23:17You're John the Baptist?
23:22I am.
23:26Why are you looking at me like that?
23:43Turn your head away.
23:46That's a command.
23:49The only commands I answer to come from God.
24:04We both worship the same God.
24:08There's only one God.
24:15I have no time to spare.
24:18You'll have all the time in the world if you only do one thing.
24:23Recant.
24:25Then you can walk out of here a free man.
24:29Recant what?
24:31The colonies you spread above me and my wife and daughter.
24:36I have no time for you.
24:40Or your freedom.
24:41Or your whores.
24:45You'll die for that.
24:56And I'll live in the light of the one who's come.
25:00Who's here.
25:06I've come to offer you another chance to recant.
25:11I told you I already have no time for you.
25:15No time.
25:16I will decide how much time you have.
25:19You brought your concubine to look at me.
25:20Who is that?
25:21Is that the baptizer?
25:22Be quiet.
25:23To say such a thing in my daughter's presence means that you suffer.
25:24Your words mean nothing to me, Herod.
25:25Scourge him.
25:26You'll kneel and grovel before the one who's come to offer you.
25:27I've come to offer you another chance to recant.
25:28I told you I already have no time for you.
25:30No time.
25:31I will decide how much time you have.
25:33You brought your concubine to look at me.
25:34Who is that?
25:35Is that the baptizer?
25:36Be quiet.
25:37To say such a thing in my daughter's presence means that you suffer.
25:38Your words mean nothing to me, Herod.
25:39Scourge him.
25:40You'll kneel and grovel before the one who's among us.
25:43Who is this man you keep speaking of?
25:59Scourge him!
26:08our daughter must be avenged i will decide who's to be avenged she called her a whore
26:22and a concubine and he called me a whore and he is right here in our prison yes
26:29it's your spine made of jelly why are you disgracing yourself and your family how much
26:35longer are you going to let this filth stay alive i will decide who's to be avenged and when
26:41baptist come here
27:05i've come to reason with you
27:22i recognize that you're a man of god
27:26you and this man you keep telling me about now i know his name because others are talking about him
27:35jesus of nazareth
27:38he hasn't spread any lies about me but you have and people have listened to you and i've offered you the chance to live if you would simply just recant
27:52because as you can see i'm reasonable
27:59so i don't understand why are you so harsh with me
28:05because you're a hypocrite
28:07before god
28:10because you speak one way
28:13and you act another way
28:16before god
28:19because your right hand is kept from seeing what your left hand is doing
28:26i don't understand
28:30herod
28:32there's no time
28:36you have to justify yourself now before god or you'll be flattened by all the lesser sinners stampeding on the road to hell
28:44you're afraid of me and those who follow me
28:45you're afraid of me and those who follow me
28:47i'm nothing
28:51but the one i've paved the way for
28:58he's the one you should fear
29:02i'm baptized with water but he'll
29:07he'll baptize with fire
29:12not the fire that burns your miserable skin
29:17the fire of truth
29:19the fire of love
29:23the fire of truth
29:42the fire of truth
30:48You're driving me mad.
31:09Come here.
31:18What do you want?
31:20Anything.
31:21I promise.
31:22Anything.
31:23Just tell me what you want.
31:26His head.
31:28Whose head?
31:28The baptizers.
31:31On a platter.
31:44Baptizer.
31:45Get down on your knees.
31:47My God.
32:00I've made the road straight and smooth for the one who's come.
32:11Shema Yisrael.
32:18Adonai Eloheinu.
32:22Adonai.
32:22Adonai Eloheinu.
32:25Adonai Eloheinu.

32:42Vaveth.

33:17Quante
33:20il
33:22What's to become of me?
33:52What's to become of me?
34:22I always find it very interesting because of the difference between
34:47Jesus' sense of the spiritual and John the Baptist's sense of the spiritual.
34:52This is a great mystery I always felt between the two of them,
34:55and so it's very special.
34:56He immediately recognizes him at the River Jordan,
35:00and Jesus' sense of spirituality is love.
35:03The Baptist is preaching something else,
35:06and I think this is the crux of it.
35:07Repent.
35:08Repent.
35:09Repent.
35:10Repent.
35:11Metanoia, which is a kind of thoroughgoing change of mind and heart.
35:14We usually think of repentance as just being sorrow for your sins,
35:17but it's really a whole change, a whole reorientation.
35:20Even Christians today wonder, why is Jesus getting baptized?
35:23Yes.
35:24Why is the sinless Son of God getting baptized when John is preaching a repentance of sins?
35:29And I think you see a little bit of the interchange there.
35:32Well, he says to him, I shouldn't be doing this for you.
35:34You should be doing it for me.
35:35John the Baptist did baptize Jesus,
35:38and it confused people probably even back then.
35:40But what I like to think is that Jesus is really immersing himself even more in humanity
35:45by standing in line with the rest of the people and getting baptized
35:48and showing his desire to inaugurate the reign of God.
35:52Well, I also think that it's Jesus sanctioning John the Baptist
35:57and giving him credibility.
35:58Yeah.
35:59He's a real Baptist.
36:00Yeah.
36:01I always wondered about Jesus starting his ministry
36:05because there are those long lost years,
36:08and then this is the moment.
36:10And we think of it as this grand moment,
36:13and yet it's a little river.
36:16So, you know, it's not vast and endless.
36:19Although it's a very symbolic river.
36:21Of course it is.
36:22Salvation to the people and redemption and the journey.
36:25Joshua.
36:25Yeah.
36:26And so he knows what he's doing.
36:28John knows what he's doing at the Jordan.
36:29I think it's wonderful that the Gospels say all of Jerusalem comes out to see him.
36:34And so he himself would have been a very popular figure.
36:36And this was at a time, it was an apocalyptic conversation was going on.
36:41It was threaded through daily life in a way.
36:45So Jesus is divine and human.
36:48He has religious desire.
36:51You figure he's Jesus.
36:53He's going to be attracted to the rituals of religion.
36:56A Baptist is coming to that bank of the Jordan.
36:59He's feeling it.
36:59He wants to be there.
37:00And the same desire that those of us who are drawn to this stuff feel to think that Jesus felt that himself is, to me, really powerful.
37:09I like to think at the baptism, God stood in line with everybody else and took his place.
37:15And his message is much more fiery than Jesus' message.
37:20I was going to say, in my mind, it always had a sense of violence to it.
37:23But also that he was more impulsive, that Jesus, just in how he addresses people, has a discipline.
37:32He answers sideways, yeah.
37:34It's parables.
37:35It's getting people to question things.
37:37It's poetic things.
37:39It's telling stories instead of lecturing.
37:42The thing with John is that somebody had to hear him, so he had to yell.
37:45Yeah.
37:46He had to be that voice crying in the wilderness.
37:48But that brought Jesus, and that changes.
37:50Was John one of those people who wanted to topple the Roman authority?
37:54Yeah, I would think ultimately he would be going there.
37:56And it was a perfect time for him to attack Herod.
37:58And those guys were put in place by the Romans.
38:01I know.
38:01You know, it was a puppet government to the Jewish population and Jewish religion.
38:06What?
38:07You know, get them out.
38:09And his bluntness.
38:10Yeah.
38:10He's the final expression of a kind of zealous, angry mood of prophecy.
38:14Right.
38:14But also understanding what was going to go down with Herod and Salome and all of that.
38:19Oh, you say it so casually, Salome and all of that.
38:22All of that.
38:22Well, the reality of all of that was that his time was up.
38:26John's time.
38:27John's time was up, and he knew it.
38:28He's in prison, and he's not going to get out.
38:30He's not getting out of there, and he knew that this was what his fate was for the new covenant.
38:35I mean, we're not talking about his head on a platter.
38:38Are we avoiding this?
38:39No, that's my next question.
38:40Okay, go ahead.
38:41No, that's my next question.
38:42No, no, it's you.
38:42We were always fascinated by the question of what drove Salome to ask for John's head on a platter.
38:50Was it really Herodias?
38:51It's always been rather obvious to me, rather than being frightened of the man as a holy man and this sort of thing.
38:58No, as it is, Herod, he's not completely Jewish.
39:04He already is someone who doesn't have the right to rule.
39:07He's put there by the Romans.
39:08Right.
39:08And this man is not only provoking, he's attacking.
39:13Yeah.
39:13He's got to go.
39:14And my sense is that Herod, out of a sense of pride, you know, having promised to Salome, I'll do whatever you tell me, and then is kind of put on the spot.
39:23Ironically, the man who likes to listen to John the Baptist ends up, through his pride, I think, through his kind of sinful pride, eliminating him.
39:32Yeah, his pride.
39:32And she's detected in him this weakness.
39:35The man of power, his weakness is that he has an admiration for his critic, John the Baptist.
39:41Yes.
39:41And she spots that, and she's going to unman him.
39:43And maybe that's what she's, that's really good.
39:46Yeah, it could undo everything.
39:47Remember, his father ordered the massacre of the innocents.
39:49That's right.
39:49So they have no trouble in that family, you know, with getting rid of people who are going to be threatened.
39:53Oh, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
39:55I also find it interesting that John, who was a leader in his own right, is able to take second stage to Jesus, which I think is very beautiful.
40:03So I was doing a Bible study in a prison years and years ago, and I said to the inmates,
40:07do you think it was hard for John to step back?
40:09And one guy raised his hand and said, no, because he was a man of God.
40:12And the other guy raised his hand, true story, and said, yes, it was hard because he was human.
40:17And I thought, that was really an interesting insight.
40:19Well, I believe it was hard for him to step back.
40:21What I actually got the impression was that there was a real split at one point,
40:25and there was almost a jealousy of building up rival factions in the groups, yeah,
40:31that Jesus was baptizing more people than he was.
40:35Well, there's a little of that in the Gospels when you see the consistent sort of quotes from John.
40:40In all the Gospels, I must decrease, he must increase.
40:43I'm not worthy to untie his sandal straps.
40:46Why are you coming to me?
40:48And I think a lot of New Testament scholars say that around the time that the Gospels were written,
40:51there were still followers of John around.
40:54That's what I mean.
40:55Wow, there were still followers of John that way?
40:58And so there's a conscious effort in the Gospels to play up, which John probably said,
41:04the humility of the Baptists to show who's in charge now, right?
41:08That this is the Messiah, and John is really his forerunner.
41:13Right.
41:13So it's just fascinating.
41:14Yeah, but there's still some followers saying, no, we prefer John.
41:17He has the right idea.
41:18Get rid of the Romans.
41:19Take the tree down, kill the Romans.
41:21They kill the Romans.
41:22They're not going to get away with that.
41:23I mean, it's a major empire.
41:25Right.
41:25You know, I think there were still some diehards, so to speak.
41:30So to speak.
41:30Diehards.
41:30Well, there are, I mean, you know, if you...
41:32They're all diehards.
41:34If you favored John's way, right?
41:37Exactly.
41:37If you favored John's way, what are you going to make of, you know, a God...
41:41Well, or a God who is crucified.
41:43I mean, really?
41:44Yes.
41:44Or a God who says, turn the other cheek.
41:46Exactly.
41:46Or a God who says, who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.
41:48So certainly, though, the Messiah that they got, Jesus, was a surprise to most people.
41:54Exactly.
41:55He's still a surprise to me.
41:57He's a big surprise.
41:57A big surprise.
41:58He still is right.
41:59I agree.
42:00I know.
42:11He's still a big surprise.
42:41He's still a big surprise.
43:11He's still a big surprise.
43:29He's still a big surprise.
