00:00For me and for millions of others, the story of Peter is one of the most moving in the Gospels
00:26because Peter was rash and he's sometimes very slow to understand, fearful, imperfect.
00:35In other words, a human being, just like the rest of us.
00:38And Jesus chose him to carry on his ministry, not in spite of, but because of his humanity.
00:48We've done our best to tell the story of this man who was a fisherman, a humble fisherman,
00:54who was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
00:57St. Peter.
01:15His name was Simon, or Shimon, which means he who heard the word of God.
01:22His brother's name was Andrew.
01:27He was a simple fisherman, a working man.
01:32The work was hard, and the times were harder.
01:36But there was one voice that stood out.
01:45Galileans, people of Galilee, listen to me.
01:49We are all so quick to see the fault in others.
01:57We open our eyes.
01:59We see.
02:00We understand quickly.
02:02Because we are looking from afar, not within.
02:10No.
02:11Not within.
02:13That is never comfortable.
02:16But listen, the next time you find fault with your wife, or your brother, or your neighbor, or even your enemy.
02:30Look within, before you speak, look within, and you will find the purest expression of the fault you see in the other.
02:45Yes.
02:45Yes.
02:48Yes, you will.
02:52This is true.
02:54Will you get out of our boat now?
03:23Put down into the deep water, and lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
03:36Just get out of our boat.
03:38We've been out all night and caught nothing.
03:40It's too late now.
03:41Lower your nets from the right side of the boat.
03:44I tell you, there are fish there.
03:47And he keeps running.
03:54Let's go.
03:56We've got a ball, let's do it.
03:59Come on.
04:29Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of men.
04:59Come on.
05:29Come on.
05:59Come on.
06:00Sister, how can I help you?
06:03Yes.
06:06Hey, that's the way.
06:12That's the way.
06:14What is this life we're leading now?
06:40I don't know.
06:41I don't understand half the things he says.
06:50Neither do I.
06:53How can anyone forgive the whole world?
06:56How can anyone forgive someone who's wronged you?
07:00I don't know, but he can.
07:07That woman who sped on him, the one who sped on me, he forgave her over and over.
07:17Over and over.
07:18But that's him.
07:19He's not like other men.
07:24Do you think he comes from God?
07:27What do you think?
07:28Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:34Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:35I think I was compelled to follow him.
07:44I'm compelled to follow him.
07:45I changed my life to follow him.
07:54So did I.
07:55When someone is hungry, he feeds them.
08:04When someone is alone, he comforts them.
08:08And when someone is sick, he heals them.
08:13But when I speak to him, he answers.
08:23Yes.
08:26That's something new in this life.
08:30Yes.
08:33It is.
08:34You were taught well by your father.
08:50My father never leaves me.
08:52I knew your father.
08:53May he rest in peace.
08:55My father is in all things and all people.
08:58He is eternal.
09:00Be very, very careful what you say, Nazarene.
09:07They honor me with their mouths.
09:10But their hearts are worlds away.
09:13And they worship me in vain by teaching their own human inventions as my doctrines.
09:20Isaiah.
09:21Yes.
09:22And his prophecy has come to pass with your generation of hypocrites.
09:27You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces.
09:34The very people who are trying to enter.
09:37You trudge to the back of beyond looking for a single man to convert.
09:42And the moment you succeed, you start making him twice as much a child of hell as you are.
09:49It's not wise to keep company of this man.
09:55He is not your messiah.
10:05Master, you think that this was wise?
10:08They took offense at your words.
10:10And when they should.
10:11They are blind.
10:13If the blind lead the blind, they all fall into a pit.
10:17But what does that mean?
10:20What does all of it mean, Master? We don't understand.
10:23I think you do understand, but you deny that you do.
10:26Because you are afraid.
10:27There was Andrew.
10:28Thomas.
10:29Bartholomew.
10:30Mary of Magdala.
10:31And Mary, the mother of Jesus.
10:35Judas Iscariot
10:55Judas Iscariot and Simon Peter
10:57Simon Peter. They, along with the others, were the ones who remained. The disciples who became
11:05the apostles. The ones who would spread the word as far and as wide as they could.
11:27Master, what do we do now? Because now the Pharisees will suspect us and watch us. They'll watch
11:37everything we do. Won't that harm our mission? Your mission? Is it our mission? I don't know.
11:46My dear one, I chose you. All of you. Each and every one of you. And that includes
11:57the one who will betray me and the one who will deny me near the hour of my death.
12:10Your death? Yes, my death. But after three days, I will rise again.
12:19How can you say these things? How do you even dare to speak of your own death? Betray you?
12:32Deny you? Out of my sight, Satan! You're speaking in the tongues of men! I'm speaking the
12:39words of God. This is too much. I've had enough. I've had enough!
12:50Simon. There are things that you will only understand after I've risen from the dead.
13:15Master. I was born a fisherman. It's hard work, but it's a decent living. I could go back to that life. But you've revealed so much to me. Some of it I've understood.
13:22A lot of it I've understood. A lot of it I... I... I know no scripture. I know no scripture.
13:29But you've revealed so much to me. Some of it I've understood. A lot of it I... I know no scripture.
13:36I work with my hands. I work with my hands. I'm a much simpler man than you think I am.
13:43Simon. I'm giving you a new name. Peter.
13:50Why? What for?
13:51Why? What for?
13:52Because you will be my rock. The rock on which the church will be built. The faith...
13:57I know no scripture. I work with my hands. I'm a much simpler man than you think I am.
14:00Simon. I'm giving you a new name. Peter.
14:05Why?
14:24I'll give you the keys to Heaven's kingdom.
14:29Me?
14:35Why me?
14:40I don't understand.
14:44I...
14:46I don't understand.
15:05I don't understand.
15:35Master, what are you doing?
15:46I'm going to wash your feet.
15:48No.
15:49You will never wash my feet.
15:51I told you.
15:52There are things you can't understand now.
15:55But you will understand them later.
16:05You call me Master, don't you?
16:12Yes.
16:14So the Master is washing the pupils' feet.
16:18This is what we will do for each other.
16:20Master, as I am doing for you, you will do for one another.
16:27For all others.
16:29Master, if you understand this now, any of you, then you are blessed.
16:39But I don't expect that you will.
16:40Tonight, one of you will betray me.
16:52And after they've taken me, one of you will deny me.
16:56Me?
17:05No.
17:07Never.
17:09Three times.
17:11Before the cock grows.
17:12This is the way of man, my beloved Peter.
17:19I don't know.
17:49No.
17:50No.
17:50No.
17:51No.
17:51No, no, no.
17:51Don't do it.
17:53No.
17:54No.
18:19No!
18:20No!
18:21No!
18:22No!
18:23No!
18:25No!
18:49No!
19:19No!
19:20No!
19:21No!
19:22No!
19:23No!
19:24I don't know what you're talking about.
19:54Wasn't that man with Jesus of Nazareth?
20:02That's what I thought.
20:03I never met the man.
20:04You're one of his followers.
20:05I know you are.
20:07You have a Galilean accent, just like him!
20:09Listen to me!
20:10I've never once laid eyes on this man!
20:13Leave me alone!
20:24I don't know what you're talking about!
20:34I don't know what you're talking about!
20:38I don't know what you're talking about!
20:42I don't know what you're talking about!
20:52That's what I did!
20:57Oh, my God.
21:27Hey, brothers!
21:52Who is that?
21:54I don't know.
21:56I've never seen him.
21:57Did you catch anything?
22:03No, nothing.
22:07Lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
22:14It's too late.
22:17Lower your nets from the right side of the boat.
22:21I tell you, there are fish.
22:26Just to humor him.
22:27Move!
22:36Move!
22:40Move!
22:44Move!
22:45You can have some magnets all day now!
22:51Master, it's you.
23:21Peter, do you love me?
23:31Master, I betrayed you.
23:34As I said you would.
23:38I'm so ashamed.
23:40But I told you that you would.
23:43Your shame is no concern of mine.
23:48Master, I...
23:55Do you love me?
23:57Master, you have to know that I love you.
24:00Feed my sheep.
24:03But, Master, I...
24:04Feed my lands.
24:06Shepherd my sheep.
24:08Feed my sheep.
24:10Yes. Yes, I will, Master.
24:12And remember this.
24:14When you are old, you won't be able to do as you did when you were young.
24:20Yes, yes, I know that.
24:22Listen to me.
24:24You'll have to stretch out your arms for someone else to dress you.
24:29And take you where you don't want to go.
24:33I knew it was the Lord.
24:49I've made breakfast for all of you.
24:52And your nets will hold.
24:56Yes, yes, yes.
24:57You'll have to go by...
25:00But I can do it without a miracle.
25:02Here it is...
25:03To you.
25:04Let me get into your house,
25:05so...
25:06I know...
25:07To you.
25:08Taboo's the thing to see the Giant by the Kyzie.
25:10On your legs...
25:11牙-a-a.
25:12I don't know if you said he was aggressive to you if he is.
25:13...but I can dance down, a bit shows up.
25:15How is he going?
25:16I need a side of fire you.
25:17I am getting too high.
25:18Like you on yourasion to go,
25:19and know if you can breathe.
25:20Brother, I'm just a poor fisherman.
25:37He was, he is the son of God.
25:41You are the rock.
25:45And he taught all of us to follow him by his example.
25:49But you understood him far better than I did.
25:53Perhaps, perhaps not.
25:59Understanding comes for every person in their own time.
26:02Yes, but you did not deny him.
26:07You stood by him when he was put to death.
26:12I denied him.
26:14And what did you see in yourself when you did what he knew you would do?
26:18My shame.
26:26And, and what, brother?
26:33My soul.
26:36He lit a flame within you, brother Peter.
26:39Now you have to light the flame in others.
26:43All of you?
27:12I want you to listen to me carefully now.
27:19As I speak of a man, a prophet, Jesus of Nazareth.
27:27He was given to you by God and made known to you with the signs and wonders that God worked through him.
27:32And this man, Jesus, who they allowed to be crucified, he allowed it.
27:40And then God, his father, raised him up and released him from death.
27:45I see the Lord before me, said David.
27:50He's always at my right hand.
27:53David lived and he died.
27:55He's buried in his tomb, but David knew that God would send the Messiah and God would lift him away from death.
28:01God has made this man both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus, whom they crucified.
28:09I knew this man.
28:14I love this man.
28:17He was, he is the Messiah of love and constant forgiveness.
28:24Forgiveness to all before you, friends and enemies.
28:31Because how else are we to break free from vengeance?
28:34So I say to you, repent, repent and be baptized.
29:04Peter and the other apostles were called before the Sanhedrin.
29:34The Jewish legislative body made up of Pharisees and Sadducees.
29:39They would question about preaching and healing a lame beggar in the name of Jesus.
29:45You're questioning us about a good deed done to a crippled man.
29:51You demand to know how he was saved by what power.
29:56So here's your answer.
29:57It was in the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified and who God raised from the dead.
30:07There is no other way to salvation.
30:09And there is no other name under heaven given to anyone in the human race by which we can all be saved.
30:16Whatever judgment you hand down, whatever instructions or prohibitions we may receive,
30:21these matters are of no consequence to us.
30:25We will never stop speaking of Jesus of Nazareth.
30:28What he said and what he did.
30:31We will never stop preaching in his name and we will never stop shouting his name
30:35from the roofs of every house and from the tops of every mountain.
30:39I am the one.
30:43I am the one who was cured by this man.
30:45Many of you in this room know me.
30:49You know what I was.
30:53And you can see now what I am.
30:59Great is the power of the Lord.
31:05They were forbidden from preaching in the name of Jesus.
31:12They were taken to be flogged.
31:15But there was no denying that the Christians,
31:21as they would later be known,
31:23were a new and lasting spirit in the world.
31:36Peter took to the road to evangelize.
31:39His task was to go to the nations and convert the pagans,
31:44the ones who believed in the old gods.
31:47Peter traveled through Syracuse and Sicily,
31:50to Calabria on the mainland,
31:52and up through the Bay of Naples,
31:54and from there to the Appian Way,
31:55which led to Rome.
31:56Oh,
31:57I thought it was very important.
32:00It was very important to them to be held
32:00and to the naval community.
32:02And this is the one I am.
32:04It was very important to offer.
32:04I want to go to the other side of the building.
32:05Thank you very much.
32:05We have the opportunity,
32:06and it was very important to them.
32:06Thank you very much.
32:07Oh,
32:08I want to go for that.
32:09Thank you very much.
32:10Thank you very much.
32:11So have a great pleasure.
32:13Thank you very much.
32:23Thank you for listening to this.
32:23Let's go.
32:53arrival. A massive fire broke out in Rome. It devastated the city and destroyed four
33:00of its 14 neighborhoods. It was rumored that the Emperor Nero himself had ordered the fire
33:06to clear out areas for construction of a new palace complex.
33:23Aren't you thankful for receiving food from this man of God?
33:41Words of Satan! But how are we teaching kindness in others?
33:46We're comforting those who need our comfort. We're feeding those who need our bread and bringing
33:51water to those who are thirsty. Whether they thank us or not is a matter for men. It has
33:57nothing to do with God.
33:59Yes, Master.
34:01No. There's only one who deserves to be called Master.
34:21According to the historian Tacitus, who was in Rome during the fire, Nero used the Christians
34:30as scapegoats. He rounded up their leaders and sentenced them to die on the cross.
34:51The Holy Spirit of the Lord
35:01And the Holy Spirit of the Lord
35:09Peter followed the way of his Master.
35:21master from beginning to end, spreading his faith and speaking his word.
35:29But he asked that his cross be fashioned differently, because he felt that he wasn't worthy to
35:36die as Jesus had died.
36:21Blessed are the pure in heart, Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount, for they will see
36:33God.
36:34And he might have been speaking of this man, to whom he entrusted everything.
36:39Jesus told Peter, you'll deny me.
36:42Not because he wanted Peter to resist or to test him.
36:47Instead, he gave Peter a way of seeing himself fully and clearly, and from there, a pathway
36:53within to real change.
36:57And that was the gift that Jesus gave to Peter and to the world.
37:02Peter was fascinating to me, because he was always a guy who was struggling to understand,
37:18and the fact that he was always described as being a hotheaded guy.
37:21So my interest is Jesus choosing Peter because of the flaws and the fallibility.
37:30Jesus is obviously a good judge of character.
37:33I think he chooses Peter for his strengths and his weaknesses.
37:36First of all, he's a fisherman, so he knows how to bait a hook, right?
37:39He knows how to catch things.
37:40He knows how to be patient, right?
37:42So all these qualities that make a good fisherman.
37:44But he also knows his weaknesses, as we know.
37:46And I think to be a leader of the community, you have to know your weaknesses because you
37:50have to remember your reliance on God.
37:52And I think that made him the perfect disciple, in a sense.
37:56Richard Rohr, the spiritual writer, said that Peter comes to Jesus not by doing right, but
38:01by doing wrong, which I think is really beautiful.
38:04My old New Testament professor, Dan Harrington, used to say that the name Peter, Rock, might have
38:10been a little bit of a nickname and a little bit of a play in his character.
38:13So it's not beyond Jesus to use that kind of two ways, right?
38:17You're the rock in which I'll build my church, but you're also kind of a tough guy.
38:20You're kind of hard-headed, rocky.
38:22God's ways are not our ways.
38:24The person who doesn't have the appearance of a true believer has it at his core.
38:29And that's Peter, right?
38:31If there's a point to it, it's to remind us to try to judge character, not by our usual criteria.
38:36Who's the best behaved, the most reliable?
38:38What's the greatest commandment, you know, to love?
38:42And the idea that you're changed by feeling, that through suffering and through emotional
38:49experience, you transform.
38:53The thing I love about him is how he's always saying, I don't get it.
38:58You think about somebody who's super emotional, it's a volatile way to live because you're yanked
39:03around by how you feel.
39:05He must have been terrified.
39:07I mean, it's one thing to be like with Jesus there and another thing to see him being led
39:12away.
39:12Yes, exactly.
39:13And knowing he's going to Golgotha.
39:15You just have the feeling that after that face-to-face and that level of repentance and
39:21forgiveness in the living moment, he became willing to go to his death.
39:25He wouldn't have denied him.
39:27Yeah, that's the real mystery and strength of Christianity.
39:30It's what happened between that moment and going on the road.
39:35Yeah, it has to have been the resurrection.
39:37A lot of people say, well, it was the disciples kind of remembering him.
39:40You don't go and put your head on the block for remembering.
39:42Peter, who was ready to go back to his old job, right?
39:46Yeah.
39:47I'm going to quit.
39:47I'm out.
39:48Yeah.
39:48So he needed something dramatic.
39:50And I think all the disciples did to show this is real.
39:52The resurrection is real.
39:53And it needs to have been physical, visual, something that's unmistakable.
39:58And then he's changed.
39:59My favorite sequence where he dives into the blue water and then he's face-to-face with
40:05him.
40:06He's in that state of profound repentance.
40:09Jesus offers him forgiveness three times.
40:11They ask him three times, do you love me?
40:12To counterbalance Peter's denial three times, right?
40:16But he also doesn't say, do you apologize, right?
40:19It's all love.
40:20You know, the way you characterize it, he denied Jesus in the strongest possible terms,
40:24as they say in the newspapers.
40:25He could have kept denying.
40:27I didn't really mean it.
40:28I was under a lot of pressure.
40:29I didn't want to die too.
40:31But he doesn't go there.
40:32He owns it.
40:33And that straightforwardness makes it possible for him to receive that love.
40:37And the risen Christ offers him not revenge.
40:39He offers him love and peace and forgiveness and reconciliation.
40:43I think this episode gets us back to the beginnings of Christianity where we can see how
40:48strange it was, how reckless it was to commit to this.
40:52And that's what I took away from the final image.
40:54The resurrection or Jesus himself turned Peter's life upside down.
40:59We can see that and feel that.
41:01And it was so luminous.
41:03I found it very moving, that final image.
41:06In one of the chapels in Vatican City where the Pope prays right after he's been named Pope
41:11as a Michelangelo image of that.
41:12And it's Peter upside down and Peter's staring out at you.
41:17And they often say, you know, when the Pope sees that, it's a reminder, you know, of,
41:21you know, who came first and what was sacrificed.
