00:00For me and for millions of others, the story of Peter is one of the most moving in the Gospels
00:26because Peter was rash and he's sometimes very slow to understand, fearful, imperfect.
00:35In other words, a human being, just like the rest of us.
00:38And Jesus chose him to carry on his ministry, not in spite of, but because of his humanity.
00:48We've done our best to tell the story of this man who was a fisherman, a humble fisherman,
00:53who was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
00:57St. Peter.
01:15His name was Simon, or Shimon, which means he who heard the word of God.
01:22His brother's name was Andrew.
01:27He was a simple fisherman, a working man.
01:32The work was hard, and the times were harder.
01:36But there was one voice that stood out.
01:45Galileans, people of Galilee, listen to me.
01:50We are all so quick to see the fault in others.
01:57We open our eyes.
01:59We see.
02:00We understand quickly.
02:02Because we are looking from afar, not within.
02:09No, not within.
02:13That is never comfortable.
02:16But listen, the next time you find fault with your wife, or your brother, or your neighbor, or even your enemy.
02:30Look within, and you will find the purest expression of the fault you see in the other.
02:45Yes.
02:46Yes.
02:47Yes, you will.
02:53This is true.
02:54Will you get out of our boat now?
03:23Put down into the deep water, and lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
03:36Just get out of our boat.
03:38We've been out all night and caught nothing.
03:40It's too late now.
03:41Lower your nets from the right side of the boat.
03:44I tell you, there are fish there.
03:47We've been out all night.
04:04It's not possible.
04:34Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of men.
05:04I'll make you fishers of men.
05:34I'll make you fishers of men.
06:04I'll make you fishers of men.
06:33I'll make you fishers of men.
07:03I'll make you fishers of men.
07:05I don't know, but he can.
07:11That woman who sped on him, the woman who sped on me, he forgave her.
07:17But that's him.
07:19He's not like other men.
07:25Do you think he comes from God?
07:31What do you think?
07:33Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:41I think I was compelled to follow him.
07:47It changed my life to follow him.
07:53So did I.
07:55When someone is hungry, he feeds them.
08:03When someone is alone, he comforts them.
08:09And when someone is sick, he heals them.
08:13But when I speak to him, he answers.
08:23Yes.
08:25Yes.
08:27That's something new in this life.
08:31Yes.
08:33It is.
08:34It is.
08:35You were taught well by your father.
08:49My father never leaves me.
08:51I knew your father.
08:52May he rest in peace.
08:54My father is in all things and all people.
08:58He is eternal.
09:00Be very, very careful what you say, Nazarene.
09:06They honor me with their mouths, but their hearts are worlds away.
09:14And they worship me in vain by teaching their own human inventions as my doctrines.
09:20Isaiah.
09:21Yes.
09:22And his prophecy has come to pass with your generation of hypocrites.
09:30You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces.
09:33The very people who are trying to enter.
09:36You trudge to the back of Beyond looking for a single man to convert.
09:41And the moment you succeed, you start making him twice as much a child of hell as you are.
09:50It's not wise to keep company of this man.
09:54He is not your messiah.
10:03Master, you think that this was wise?
10:08They took offense at your words.
10:10And well, they should.
10:11They are blind.
10:13If the blind lead the blind, they all fall into a pit.
10:18But what does that mean?
10:20What does all of it mean, Master?
10:22We don't understand.
10:23I think you do understand, but you deny that you do.
10:26Because you are afraid.
10:27There was Andrew.
10:28Thomas.
10:29Bartholomew.
10:30Mary of Magdala.
10:31And Mary, the mother of Jesus.
10:34Judas Iscariot.
10:35And Simon Peter.
10:36They, along with the others, were the ones who remained.
10:39The disciples who became the Apostles.
10:40The ones who the ones who went away from the Lord.
10:42The disciples.
10:43The disciples.
10:44The apostles.
10:45They did not to believe they were receive to be armored.
10:46eey.
10:47In the name of Jesus.
10:49Peter.
10:50And when we saw Jesus in Jesus.
10:54And, David.
10:55And another old prophet.
10:56Peter was lingering and is now like that.
10:59Oh, this was wonderful.
11:00So the last one.
11:01He wasased not a family.
11:02So we know that we took care of this man died.
11:03He was like the two time of runteres of Rome.
11:04But the quarrels of these are very quickly.
11:05Yes.
11:06Well, the ìą… that he was Meh.
11:08The ones who would spread the word as far and as wide as they could.
11:28Master, what do we do now?
11:33Because now the Pharisees will suspect us and watch us.
11:36They'll watch everything we do.
11:39Won't that harm our mission?
11:42Your mission? Is it our mission? I don't know.
11:46My dear one, I chose you.
11:51All of you.
11:53Each and every one of you.
11:56And that includes the one who will betray me.
11:59And the one who will deny me near the hour of my death.
12:06Your death?
12:11Yes, my death.
12:15But after three days, I will rise again.
12:18How can you say these things?
12:26How do you even dare to speak of your own death?
12:31Betray you?
12:33Deny you?
12:34Out of my sight, Satan!
12:35You're speaking in the tongues of men!
12:38I'm speaking the words of God.
12:43This is too much.
12:46I've had enough.
12:49I've had enough!
12:50Simon, there are things that you will only understand after I've risen from the dead.
13:19Master, I was born a fisherman.
13:29It's hard work, but it's a decent living.
13:33I could go back to that life.
13:39But you've revealed so much to me.
13:42Some of it I've understood.
13:46A lot of it I...
13:47I know no scripture.
13:52I work with my hands.
13:55I'm a much simpler man than you think I am.
13:57Simon, I'm giving you a new name.
14:03Peter.
14:07Why?
14:08What for?
14:10Because you will be my rock.
14:13The rock on which the church will be built.
14:18The faith.
14:19I'll give you the keys to heaven's kingdom.
14:29Me?
14:36Why me?
14:41I don't understand.
14:42I...
14:45I...
14:46I don't understand.
14:48I don't understand.
14:49I don't understand.
14:54I'll be right back.
15:24Master, what are you doing?
15:47I'm going to wash your feet.
15:49No, you will never wash my feet.
15:51I told you, there are things you can't understand now, but you will understand them later.
16:09You call me Master, don't you?
16:13Yes.
16:14So the Master is washing the pupils' feet.
16:18This is what we will do for each other.
16:21As I am doing for you, you will do for one another.
16:28For all others.
16:32If you understand this now, any of you, then you are blessed.
16:37But I don't expect that you will.
16:48Tonight, one of you will betray me.
16:52And after they've taken me, one of you will deny me.
16:57Me?
17:02Me?
17:06No.
17:07Never.
17:09Three times before the cock crows.
17:16This is the way of man, my beloved Peter.
17:19No.
17:40No.
17:40No.
17:41No.
17:42No.
17:42No, no!
17:47No!
17:50No, no, don't do it!
18:05No!
18:19No!
18:21No!
18:23No!
18:31No!
18:35Oh, my God.
19:05Oh, my God.
19:35Oh, my God.
19:47Aren't you a follower of Jesus to Galilean?
19:52Don't know what you're talking about.
19:53Wasn't that man with Jesus or Nazareth?
20:02That's what I thought.
20:03I never met the man.
20:04You're one of his followers.
20:06I know you are.
20:07You have a Galilean accent just like him.
20:09Listen to me.
20:10I've never once laid eyes on this man.
20:12Leave me alone!
20:15I know you are.
20:45I know you are.
20:57I know you are.
21:02ORGAN PLAYS
21:32Hey, brothers!
21:52Who is that?
21:55I don't know. I've never seen him.
22:00Did you catch anything?
22:03No! Nothing!
22:07Lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
22:14It's too late!
22:17Lower your nets from the right side of the boat!
22:22I tell you, there are fish!
22:24Just to humor him.
22:27Move! Move!
22:40Move! Move!
22:46We can have some nets all day now!
22:51Master, it's you.
23:15Master, it's you.
23:17Peter, do you love me?
23:30Master, I betrayed you.
23:34As I said you would.
23:38I'm so ashamed.
23:40But I told you that you would.
23:43Your shame is no concern of mine.
23:45Master, I...
23:49Master, I...
23:51Do you love me?
23:57Master, you have to know that I love you.
24:00Feed my sheep.
24:03But, Master, I...
24:04Feed my lands.
24:06Shepherd my sheep.
24:08Feed my sheep.
24:10Yes.
24:11Yes, I will, Master.
24:12And remember this.
24:14When you are old,
24:15you won't be able to do as you did
24:17when you were young.
24:18Yes, yes, I know that.
24:22Listen to me.
24:24You'll have to stretch out your arms
24:27for someone else to dress you
24:29and take you where you don't want to go.
24:42I knew it was the Lord.
24:44I've made breakfast for all of you.
24:52And your nets will hold.
25:14Brother,
25:30I'm just a poor fisherman.
25:37He was...
25:39He is the son of God.
25:41You are the rock.
25:44And he taught all of us
25:47to follow him by his example.
25:49But you understood him
25:51far better than I did.
25:54Perhaps.
25:55Perhaps not.
26:00Understanding comes
26:01for every person in their own time.
26:02Yes, but you did not deny him.
26:07You stood by him
26:08when he was put to death.
26:12I denied him.
26:14And what did you see in yourself
26:15when you did what he knew you would do?
26:22My shame.
26:27And...
26:28And...
26:28What, brother?
26:31My soul?
26:36He lit a flame within you,
26:38brother Peter.
26:41Now you have to light the flame in others.
26:43All of you?
27:12I want you to listen to me carefully now.
27:19As I speak of a man,
27:21a prophet,
27:23Jesus of Nazareth.
27:27He was given to you by God
27:29and made known to you
27:30with the signs and wonders
27:31that God worked through him.
27:33And this man, Jesus,
27:36who they allowed to be crucified,
27:39he allowed it.
27:41And then God, his father,
27:43raised him up
27:44and released him from death.
27:46I see the Lord before me,
27:49said David.
27:51He's always at my right hand.
27:54David lived and he died.
27:56He's buried in his tomb,
27:57but David knew that God would send the Messiah
27:59and God would lift him away from death.
28:03God has made this man both Lord and Messiah.
28:05This Jesus whom they crucified.
28:11I knew this man.
28:15I love this man.
28:18He was,
28:19he is the Messiah of love
28:22and constant forgiveness.
28:26Forgiveness to all before you,
28:29friends and enemies.
28:32Because how else are we
28:33to break free from vengeance?
28:36So I say to you,
28:39repent.
28:42Repent
28:43and be baptized.
28:45I baptize you
29:06in the name of Jesus.
29:15I baptize you
29:19in the name of Jesus.
29:30Peter and the other apostles
29:32were called before the Sanhedrin,
29:35the Jewish legislative body
29:36made up of Pharisees and Sadducees.
29:40They would question about preaching
29:41and healing a lame beggar
29:44in the name of Jesus.
29:45You're questioning us
29:47about a good deed
29:48done to a crippled man.
29:51You demand to know
29:52how he was saved,
29:54by what power.
29:56So here's your answer.
30:00It was in the name of Jesus Christ
30:02who was crucified
30:04and who God raised from the dead.
30:07There is no other way to salvation.
30:10And there is no other name under heaven
30:12given to anyone in the human race
30:13by which we can all be saved.
30:16Whatever judgment you hand down,
30:18whatever instructions
30:19or prohibitions we may receive,
30:21these matters are of no consequence to us.
30:25We will never stop speaking
30:26of Jesus of Nazareth,
30:29of what he said
30:30and what he did.
30:32We will never stop preaching
30:33in his name
30:34and we will never stop
30:34shouting his name
30:35from the roofs of every house
30:37and from the tops
30:38of every mountain.
30:39I am the one.
30:43I am the one
30:44who was cured
30:45by this man.
30:47Many of you
30:47in this room
30:48know me.
30:49You know what I was.
30:51And you can see now
30:55what I am.
30:59Great is the power
31:00of the Lord.
31:06They were forbidden
31:06from preaching
31:07in the name of Jesus.
31:08They were taken
31:13to be flogged.
31:18But there was no denying
31:20that the Christians,
31:21as they would later be known,
31:23were a new
31:24and lasting spirit
31:25in the world.
31:26Peter took to the road
31:38to evangelize.
31:39His task was to go
31:40to the nations
31:42and convert the pagans,
31:44the ones who believed
31:45in the old gods.
31:47Peter traveled
31:48through Syracuse
31:49and Sicily
31:50to Calabria
31:51on the mainland
31:51and up through
31:53the Bay of Naples
31:53and from there
31:54to the Appian Way,
31:55which led to Rome.
32:25Babylon.
32:27Babylon.
32:28Shortly after Peter's arrival,
32:54a massive fire
32:56broke out in Rome.
32:57It devastated the city
32:58and destroyed
33:00four of its
33:0014 neighborhoods.
33:03It was rumored
33:04that the Emperor Nero
33:05himself
33:06had ordered the fire
33:07to clear out areas
33:08for construction
33:09of a new palace complex.
33:11aren't you thankful
33:26for receiving food
33:29from this man of the world?
33:31words of Satan?
33:43But how are we teaching
33:45kindness in others?
33:46We're comforting
33:47those who need
33:48our comfort.
33:49We're feeding those
33:50who need our bread
33:51and bringing water
33:51to those who are thirsty.
33:53Whether they thank us
33:55or not
33:55or not
33:55is a matter
33:56for men.
33:57It has nothing
33:58to do with God.
34:00Yes, master.
34:01No.
34:03There's only one
34:04who deserves
34:04to be called master.
34:05According to the historian
34:25Tacitus, who was in Rome
34:26during the fire,
34:29Nero used the Christians
34:30as scapegoats.
34:41He rounded up
34:43their leaders
34:43and sentenced them
34:45to die on the cross.
35:00Peter followed the way
35:21of his master
35:21from beginning to end,
35:25spreading his faith
35:26and speaking his word.
35:27But he asked
35:30that his cross
35:31be fashioned differently
35:32because he felt
35:34that he wasn't worthy
35:36to die as Jesus had died.
35:57He missed out.
36:06Amen?
36:07Amen.
36:10Amen.
36:13Amen.
36:21Amen.
36:23Amen.
36:24Amen.
36:28Blessed are the pure in heart, Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount, for they will see God.
36:35And he might have been speaking of this man to whom he entrusted everything.
36:40Jesus told Peter, you'll deny me.
36:43Not because he wanted Peter to resist or to test him.
36:47Instead, he gave Peter a way of seeing himself fully and clearly.
36:51And from there, a pathway within to real change.
36:58And that was the gift that Jesus gave to Peter and to the world.
37:12Peter was fascinating to me because he was always a guy who was struggling to understand.
37:18And the fact that he was always described as being a hot-headed guy.
37:22So my interest is Jesus choosing Peter because of the flaws and the fallibility.
37:31Jesus is obviously a good judge of character.
37:34I think he chooses Peter for his strengths and his weaknesses.
37:36First of all, he's a fisherman.
37:38So he knows how to bait a hook.
37:40He knows how to catch things.
37:41He knows how to be patient.
37:42So all these qualities that make a good fisherman.
37:44But he also knows his weaknesses, as we know.
37:47And I think to be a leader of the community, you have to know your weaknesses because you
37:51have to remember your reliance on God.
37:52And I think that made him the perfect disciple, in a sense.
37:56Richard Rohr, the spiritual writer, said that Peter comes to Jesus not by doing right,
38:02but by doing wrong, which I think is really beautiful.
38:05My old New Testament professor, Dan Harrington, used to say that the name Peter, Rock, might
38:10have been a little bit of a nickname and a little bit of a play on his character.
38:14So it's not beyond Jesus to use that kind of two ways, right?
38:17You're the rock in which I'll build my church, but you're also kind of a tough guy.
38:21You're kind of hard-headed Rocky.
38:22God's ways are not our ways.
38:24The person who doesn't have the appearance of a true believer has it at his core.
38:30And that's Peter, right?
38:31If there's a point to it, it's to remind us to try to judge character, not by our usual criteria.
38:37Who's the best behaved, the most reliable?
38:39What's the greatest commandment, you know, to love?
38:42And the idea that you're changed by feeling, that through suffering and through emotional experience, you transform.
38:54The thing I love about him is how he's always saying, I don't get it.
38:59You think about somebody who's super emotional, it's a volatile way to live because you're yanked around by how you feel.
39:05He must have been terrified.
39:07I mean, it's one thing to be, like, with Jesus there and another thing to see him being led away.
39:12Yes, exactly.
39:13And knowing he's going to Golgotha.
39:15You just have the feeling that after that face-to-face and that level of repentance and forgiveness in the living moment, he became willing to go to his death.
39:26He wouldn't have denied him.
39:27Yeah, that's the real mystery and strength of Christianity.
39:30It's what happened between that moment and going on the road and taking it out there.
39:36Yeah, it has to have been the resurrection.
39:37A lot of people say, well, it was the disciples kind of remembering him.
39:41You don't go and put your head on the block for remembering.
39:43Peter, who was ready to go back to his old job, right?
39:47Yeah.
39:47I'm going to quit.
39:48I'm out.
39:48Yeah, so he needed something dramatic, and I think all the disciples did, to show this is real, the resurrection is real.
39:54And it needs to have been physical, visual, something that's unmistakable.
39:59And then he's changed.
40:00My favorite sequence, where he dives into the blue water, and then he's face-to-face with him.
40:06He's in that state of profound repentance.
40:09Jesus offers him forgiveness three times.
40:11He asks him three times, do you love me?
40:13To counterbalance Peter's denial three times, right?
40:16But he also doesn't say, do you apologize, right?
40:19It's all love.
40:21You know, the way you characterize it, he denied Jesus in the strongest possible terms, as they say in the newspapers.
40:26He could have kept denying.
40:27I didn't really mean it.
40:28I was under a lot of pressure.
40:30I didn't want to die, too.
40:31But he doesn't go there.
40:32He owns it.
40:33And that straightforwardness makes it possible for him to receive that love.
40:37And the risen Christ offers him not revenge.
40:40He offers him love and peace and forgiveness and reconciliation.
40:44I think this episode gets us back to the beginnings of Christianity, where we can see how strange it was, how reckless it was to commit to this.
40:53And that's what I took away from the final image.
40:55The resurrection, or Jesus himself, turned Peter's life upside down.
40:59We can see that and feel that.
41:01And it was so luminous.
41:03I found it very moving, that final image.
41:06In one of the chapels in Vatican City where the Pope prays, right after he's been named Pope, is a Michelangelo image of that.
41:13And it's Peter upside down, and Peter's staring out at you.
41:17And they often say, you know, when the Pope sees that, it's a reminder, you know, of, you know, who came first and what was sacrificed.
