00:00For me and for millions of others, the story of Peter
00:30is one of the most moving in the Gospels, because Peter was rash, and he's sometimes very slow to understand, fearful, imperfect, in other words, a human being, just like the rest of us.
00:43And Jesus chose him to carry on his ministry, not in spite of, but because of his humanity.
00:53We've done our best to tell the story of this man who was a fisherman, a humble fisherman, who was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven, St. Peter.
01:03His name was Simon, or Shimon, which means, he who heard the word of God.
01:10His brother's name was Andrew.
01:17He was a simple fisherman, a working man.
01:23The work was hard, and the times were harder.
01:30But there was one voice that stood out.
01:36Galileans, people of Galilee, listen to me.
01:43We are all so quick to see the fault in others.
01:49We open our eyes, we see, we understand quickly, because we are looking from afar, not within.
02:12Not within.
02:13No, not within.
02:18That is never comfortable.
02:21But listen, the next time you find fault with your wife, or your brother, or your neighbor, or even your enemy, look within before you speak.
02:39Look within.
02:42And you will find the purest expression of the fault you see in the other.
02:51Yes.
02:52Yes, you will.
02:55This is true.
03:00This is true.
03:27Will you get out of our boat now?
03:34Put down into the deep water, and lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
03:42Just get out of our boat.
03:43We've been out all night and caught nothing.
03:45It's too late now.
03:46Lower your nets from the right side of the boat.
03:49I tell you, there are fish there.
03:56This is where we go.
03:57You will not dive.
03:58You will not dive to the left side of the boat.
03:59I will not dive into this old boat.
04:00In the middle of the boat, you should be able to see the pulse of the right side of the boat.
04:01You will not dive into this.
04:02You will not dive into this.
04:03Are we?
04:04No.
04:05Image from the Việt Namath?
04:06No.
04:07涼 compiler?
04:08We are currently going to be in the desert, but we are currently in the desert.
04:10We are now in the desert, and we are now in the desert.
04:11We are constantly digging up the desert.
04:12We are still on the desert, and we are still on the winter We are here to leave blood.
04:13It's not possible.
04:43Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of men.
05:13I'll make you fishers of men.
05:43I'll make you fishers of men, and I'll make you fishers of men.
06:12I'll make you fishers of men.
06:14That's the way.
06:17That's the way.
06:19I'll make you fishers of men.
06:29What is this life we're leading now?
06:36I don't know.
06:38I don't understand half the things he says.
06:45Neither do I.
06:46Neither do I.
06:47How can anyone forgive the whole world?
06:49How can anyone forgive someone who's wronged you?
06:56I don't know, but he can.
06:57I don't know.
06:58I don't know.
06:59I don't know.
07:00I don't know.
07:01But he can.
07:02That woman who sped on him, the woman who sped on me, he forgave her over and over.
07:09But that's him.
07:10He's not like other men.
07:16Do you think he comes from God?
07:17What do you think?
07:18Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:19I think I was...
07:20Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:21Yes.
07:22I think I was compelled to follow him.
07:23Hmm.
07:24Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:26I think I was compelled to follow him.
07:27No!
07:28No!
07:29You're friends?
07:30God forgave her over and over and over.
07:32That's him.
07:33He's not like other men.
07:35Do you think he comes from God?
07:37What do you think?
07:40Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:44No!
07:48I think I was compelled to follow him.
07:50You changed my life to follow him.
07:58So did I.
08:03When someone is hungry, he feeds them.
08:08When someone is alone, he comforts them.
08:13And when someone is sick, he heals them.
08:16But when I speak to him, he answers.
08:27Yes.
08:31That's something new in this life.
08:35Yes.
08:37It is.
08:46You were taught well by your father.
08:55My father never leaves me.
08:57I knew your father. May he rest in peace.
08:59My father is in all things and all people. He is eternal.
09:05Be very, very careful what you say, Nazarene.
09:12They honor me with their mouths, but their hearts are worlds away.
09:19And they worship me in vain by teaching their own human inventions as my doctrines.
09:25Isaiah.
09:26Isaiah.
09:27Yes.
09:28And his prophecy has come to pass with your generation of hypocrites.
09:35You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces.
09:39The very people who are trying to enter.
09:42You trudge to the back of beyond looking for a single man to convert.
09:46And the moment you succeed, you start making him twice as much a child of hell as you are.
09:56It's not wise to keep company of this man.
10:00He is not your messiah.
10:02Master, you think that this was wise? They took offense at your words.
10:15And well, they should.
10:17They are blind.
10:19If the blind lead the blind, they all fall into a pit.
10:23But what does that mean?
10:26What does all of it mean, Master? We don't understand.
10:28I think you do understand, but you deny that you do.
10:31Because you are afraid.
10:40There was Andrew.
10:43Thomas.
10:47Bartholomew.
10:51Mary of Magdala.
10:52Mary of Magdala.
10:55And Mary, the mother of Jesus.
11:00Judas Iscariot.
11:02And Simon Peter.
11:04They, along with the others, were the ones who remained.
11:08The disciples who became the apostles.
11:13The ones who would spread the word as far and as wide as they could.
11:22Master.
11:24What do we do now?
11:26Because now the Pharisees will suspect us and watch us.
11:29They'll watch everything we do.
11:31Won't that harm our mission?
11:33Your mission? Is it our mission? I don't know.
11:37My dear one. I chose you.
11:52All of you.
11:57Each and every one of you.
11:58each and every one of you.
12:01And that includes the one who will betray me
12:04and the one who will deny me near the hour of my death.
12:15Your death?
12:17Yes, my death.
12:20But after three days, I will rise again.
12:23How can you say these things?
12:31How do you even dare to speak of your own death?
12:35Betray you?
12:38Deny you?
12:39Out of my sight, Satan!
12:41You're speaking in the tongues of men!
12:43I'm speaking the words of God!
12:48This is too much.
12:51I've had enough.
12:53I've had enough!
13:16Simon.
13:17There are things that you will only understand
13:22after I've risen from the dead.
13:27Master.
13:30I was born a fisherman.
13:34It's hard work, but
13:35it's a decent living.
13:40I could go back to that life.
13:41But you've revealed so much to me.
13:47Some of it I've understood.
13:50A lot of it I...
13:52I...
13:52I...
13:53I know no scripture.
13:57I work with my hands.
14:00I'm a much simpler man than you think I am.
14:02Simon.
14:03I'm giving you a new name.
14:06Peter.
14:12Why?
14:12What for?
14:14Because you will be my rock.
14:17The rock on which the church will be built.
14:22The faith.
14:22The faith.
14:23The faith.
14:29I'll give you the keys to heaven's kingdom.
14:34Me?
14:41Why me?
14:42I don't understand.
14:47I-I don't understand.
15:17I don't understand.
15:25I don't understand.
15:25Master, what are you doing?
15:51I'm going to wash your feet.
15:54No.
15:54You will never wash my feet.
15:56I told you.
15:57There are things you can't understand now, but you will understand them later.
16:14You call me Master, don't you?
16:17Yes.
16:19So the Master is washing the pupils' feet.
16:22This is what we will do for each other.
16:27As I am doing for you, you will do for one another.
16:33For all others.
16:37If you understand this now, any of you, then you are blessed.
16:42But I don't expect that you will.
16:53Tonight, one of you will betray me.
16:57And after they've taken me, one of you will deny me.
17:02Me?
17:03No.
17:04Never.
17:05Three times.
17:06Before the cock crows.
17:09This is the way of man.

19:52Aren't you a follower of Jesus to Galilean?
19:57Don't know what you're talking about.
20:05Wasn't that man with Jesus of Nazareth?
20:07That's what I thought.
20:08I never met the man.
20:09You're one of his followers.
20:11I know you are.
20:12You have a Galilean accent just like him.
20:14Listen to me.
20:15I've never watched the dice on this man.
20:19Leave me alone.
20:39I don't know.
20:55I don't know.
21:25Hey, brother.
21:55Who is that?
21:58I don't know.
22:00I've never seen him.
22:02Did you catch anything?
22:07No, nothing.
22:10Lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
22:15It's too late!
22:20Lower your nets from the right side of the boat.
22:24I tell you, there are fish.

23:28Peter, do you love me?
23:34Master, I betrayed you.
23:39As I said you would.
23:41I'm so ashamed.
23:44But I told you that you would.
23:47Your shame is no concern of mine.
23:51Master, I...
23:55Do you love me?
24:00Master, you have to know that I love you.
24:03Feed my sheep.
24:07But, Master, I...
24:08Feed my lands.
24:09Shepherd my sheep.
24:12Feed my sheep.
24:13Yes.
24:14Yes, I will, Master.
24:16And remember this.
24:17When you are old, you won't be able to do as you did when you were young.
24:22Yes, yes, I know that.
24:24Listen to me.
24:25You'll have to stretch out your arms for someone else to dress you.
24:30And take you where you don't want to go.
24:34And take you where you don't want to go.
24:47I knew it was the Lord.
24:54I've made breakfast for all of you.
24:56And your nets will hold.
24:58And your nets will hold.
24:59And your nets will hold.
25:03Doctor, you are the only ones that appear for you.
25:04Tell me about it.
25:05You'll be the only ones that appear for you.
25:06No money is not too, no money is too bad.
25:07You will not be the only ones that appear for you.
25:08I've made an asset.
25:09How am I?
25:10It's true.
25:11I'm done.
25:12You'll be the only one.
25:13I know you said, you'll buy myæ–¹.
25:14It's the only one.
25:15It's my parents.
25:16You know I've made an asset.
25:17You're all that.
25:18You are the only ones that appear to me.
25:19You are the only one.
25:20I can't wait.
25:21We are the only one.
25:22You're the only one.
25:24Brother, I'm just a poor fisherman.
25:42He was, he is the son of God.
25:46You are the rock.
25:51And he taught all of us to follow him by his example.
25:54But you understood him far better than I did.
25:59Perhaps, perhaps not.
26:05Understanding comes for every person in their own time.
26:07Yes, but you did not deny him.
26:12You stood by him when he was put to death.
26:17I denied him.
26:19And what did you see in yourself when you did what he knew you would do?
26:24My shame.
26:31And, and what, brother?
26:39My soul.
26:41He lit a flame within you, Brother Peter.
26:44Now you have to light the flame in others.
26:48All of you.
27:17I want you to listen to me carefully now
27:23as I speak of a man
27:25a prophet
27:27Jesus of Nazareth
27:31he was given to you by God
27:34and made known to you with the signs and wonders
27:36that God worked through him
27:38and this man Jesus
27:40who they allowed to be crucified
27:43he allowed it
27:45and then God his father raised him up
27:49and released him from death
27:51I see the Lord before me
27:54said David
27:55he's always at my right hand
27:58David lived and he died
28:01he's buried in his tomb
28:02but David knew that God would send the Messiah
28:04and God would lift him away from death
28:06God has made this man both Lord and Messiah
28:10this Jesus
28:12whom they crucified
28:14I knew this man
28:18I love this man
28:21he was
28:23he is the Messiah of love
28:27and constant forgiveness
28:29forgiveness to all before you
28:33friends and enemies
28:36because how else are we to break free from vengeance
28:39so I say to you
28:43repent
28:45repent
28:48and be baptized
28:50I baptize you
29:11in the name of Jesus
29:12Peter and the other apostles were called before the Sanhedrin
29:25Peter and the other apostles were called before the Sanhedrin
29:39the Jewish legislative body made up of Pharisees and Sadducees
29:44they would question about preaching
29:46and healing a lame beggar in the name of Jesus
29:49you're questioning us about a good deed done to a crippled man
29:55you demand to know how he was saved by what power
30:00so here's your answer
30:03it was in the name of Jesus Christ
30:07who was crucified and who God raised from the dead
30:11there's no other way to salvation
30:14and there is no other name under heaven given to anyone in the human race by which we can all be saved
30:20whatever judgment you hand down
30:23whatever instructions or prohibitions we may receive
30:26these matters are of no consequence to us
30:28we will never stop speaking of Jesus of Nazareth
30:33of what he said
30:35and what he did
30:36we will never stop preaching in his name
30:38and we will never stop shouting his name
30:40from the roofs of every house
30:42and from the tops of every mountain
30:44I am the one
30:45I am the one who was cured by this man
30:50many of you in this room know me
30:54you know what I was
30:56and you can see now what I am
31:00great is the power of the Lord
31:06they were forbidden from preaching in the name of Jesus
31:13they were taken to be flogged
31:19but there was no denying that the Christians
31:25as they would later be known
31:28were a new and lasting spirit in the world
31:31Peter took to the road to evangelize
31:44his task was to go to the nations
31:47and convert the pagans
31:49the ones who believed in the old gods
31:51Peter traveled through Syracuse and Sicily
31:55to Calabria on the mainland
31:56and up through the Bay of Naples
31:58and from there to the Appian Way
32:00which led to Rome
32:02which led to Rome
32:02yes
32:11to the Minh
32:14to the
32:16the
32:32Give me two for you.
32:34Give me one.
32:36One.
32:50Babylon.
32:57Shortly after Peter's arrival,
32:59a massive fire broke out in Rome.
33:01It devastated the city
33:03and destroyed four of its 14 neighborhoods.
33:08It was rumored that the Emperor Nero himself
33:11had ordered the fire to clear out areas
33:13for construction of a new palace complex.
33:31Aren't you thankful for receiving food from this man of God?
33:47It was the words of Satan!
33:49But how are we teaching kindness in others?
33:52We're comforting those who need our comfort.
33:54We're feeding those who need our bread
33:56and bringing water to those who are thirsty.
33:58Whether they thank us or not is a matter for men.
34:02It has nothing to do with God.
34:04Yes, Master.
34:06No.
34:07There's only one who deserves to be called master.
34:10According to the historian Tacitus, who was in Rome during the fire,
34:32Nero used the Christians as scapegoats.
34:35He rounded up their leaders and sentenced them to die on the cross.
34:51KNOCKS
34:53KNOCKS
34:55KNOCKS
34:57KNOCKS
34:58Peter followed the way of his master
35:26from beginning to end.
35:29Spreading his faith and speaking his word.
35:34But he asked that his cross be fashioned differently
35:38because he felt that he wasn't worthy to die as Jesus had died.

37:35Jesus is obviously a good judge of character...
37:38I think he's chuses Peter for his strengths...
37:40And as weaknesses...
37:41First of all he's a fisherman...
37:42He knows how to...
37:43Bait...
37:44A hook...
37:45catch things. He knows how to be patient, right? So all these qualities that make a good fisherman.
37:49But he also knows his weaknesses, as we know. And I think to be a leader of
37:53the community, you have to know your weaknesses because you have to remember your reliance on God.
37:57And I think that made him the perfect disciple, in a sense.
38:01Richard Rohr, the spiritual writer, said that Peter comes to Jesus
38:05not by doing right, but by doing wrong, which I think is really beautiful.
38:09My old New Testament professor, Dan Harrington, used to say that the name
38:13Peter, rock, might have been a little bit of a nickname and a little bit
38:17of a play in his character. So it's not beyond Jesus to use that kind of
38:21two ways, right? You're the rock in which I'll build my church, but you're also kind of a tough guy.
38:26You're kind of hard-headed, rocky. God's ways are not our ways. The person
38:29who doesn't have the appearance of a true believer
38:32has it at his core. And that's Peter, right? If there's a point to it, it's
38:37to remind us to try to judge character, not by our usual criteria.
38:41Who's the best behaved, the most reliable.
38:44What's the greatest commandment, you know, to love?
38:47And the idea that you're changed by feeling, that through suffering and through
38:53emotional experience, you transform.
38:58The thing I love about him is how he's always saying, I don't get it.
39:03You think about somebody who's super emotional, it's a volatile way to live
39:07because you're yanked around by how you feel. He must have been terrified. I mean,
39:12it's one thing to be like with Jesus there and another thing to see him being led away.
39:17Yes, exactly.
39:18And knowing he's going to Golgotha. You just have the feeling that after that face-to-face
39:24and that level of repentance and forgiveness in the living moment, he became willing to go to his death.
39:30You wouldn't have denied him.
39:32Yeah, that's the real mystery and strength of Christianity. It's what happened between that moment and going on the road.
39:39Yeah, it has to have been the resurrection. A lot of people say, well, it was the disciples kind of remembering him.
39:45You don't go and put your head on the block for remembering.
39:48Peter, who was ready to go back to his old job, right?
39:51Yeah, I'm going to quit. I'm out.
39:53Yeah, so he needed something dramatic, and I think all the disciples did, to show this is real, the resurrection is real.
39:59And it needs to have been physical, visual, something that's unmistakable. And then he's changed.
40:05My favorite sequence where he dives into the blue water and then he's face-to-face with him.
40:11He's in that state of profound repentance.
40:14Jesus offers him forgiveness three times. He asks him three times, do you love me?
40:18To counterbalance Peter's denial three times, right? But he also doesn't say, do you apologize, right? It's all love.
40:26You know, the way you characterize it, he denied Jesus in the strongest possible terms, as they say in the newspapers.
40:31He could have kept denying. I didn't really mean it. I was under a lot of pressure. I didn't want to die, too.
40:36But he doesn't go there. He owns it. And that straightforwardness makes it possible for him to receive that love.
40:42And the risen Christ offers him not revenge. He offers him love and peace and forgiveness and reconciliation.
40:48I think this episode gets us back to the beginnings of Christianity, where we can see how strange it was, how reckless it was to commit to this.
40:57And that's what I took away from the final image. The resurrection, or Jesus himself, turned Peter's life upside down.
41:04We can see that and feel that.
41:06And it was so luminous. I found it very moving, that final image.
41:11In one of the chapels in Vatican City, where the Pope prays, right after he's been named Pope, is a Michelangelo image of that.
41:18And it's Peter upside down, and Peter's staring out at you.
41:21And they often say, you know, when the Pope sees that, it's a reminder, you know, of who came first and what was sacrificed.
41:29And it's Peter's and Peter's.
