00:59I wonder what they're saying to each other. My wife's posh. Really? So is mine.
01:05Big show for you. It's funny. Big show for you tonight. Joining us later at Singing For Us, it's the one and only Ed Sheeran.
01:14We'll be performing the single, Camera. But first, it's Camera Lights Action for tonight's guests.
01:22He's a top comedian who's now acting with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, from Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise to Clifford the Big Red Dog in Clifford the Big Red Dog.
01:30Now, he's showing his sinister side in the dark news thriller Malice. It's our good friend, Jack Whitehall.
01:37There he is. There you go. That's a good one. That's good. That's good.
01:48And she was Oscar nominated for her role as a vengeful wife in Gone Girl, stole the show as Elspeth in Saltburn, and has just made a triumphant return to the stage in the hit play Inter Alia.
02:00Here to tell us about her latest role in Now You See Me, Now You Don't, it's Rosamund Pike!
02:09Sweet, sir. Great. Hi. Good to see you again.
02:18We've loved this kick-ass Oscar winner in films like Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the smash hit Crazy Rich Asians.
02:27Now, she's back as Madame Marble in Wicked For Good. It's Michelle Yeoh!
02:35Oh! Oh! Wow! Fabulous!
02:41La, la, la, Michelle Yeoh!
02:43That's Rosamund and Jack, and I say hello to him.
02:48And this movie star has been flying high since his breakout role in Top Gun Maverick from the hit rom-com Anyone But You to Disaster Epic Twisters.
02:56Now, bringing us the action blockbuster, The Running Man. It's a first-time welcome to Glenn Powell!
03:05Hello, sir.
03:06Lovely to see you.
03:07Oh, my, my, my.
03:08Have a seat.
03:09All right, guys.
03:15What a very lovely couch. Hello. Welcome, everybody.
03:18So, welcome back to Jack and Rosamund and Michelle. First-time welcome to Glenn.
03:23And you are friends with Jack Whitehall?
03:25Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
03:26Oh, yeah. We got to hang out a little bit while I was shooting The Running Man, yeah.
03:29Yeah. The last time we met was at Glastonbury Festival, right?
03:32That was, yeah.
03:33We bumped into each other at Glastonbury, and we'd met like a couple of times before that.
03:37And I bumped into Glenn there, and I was with my fiancé and then two of my fiancé's girlfriends,
03:42who are both single ladies from Essex, who, the minute they saw that I was friendly with Glenn,
03:47just, like, locked in.
03:49And then, for the rest of the weekend, that's all they talked about.
03:52So, like, every day I'd wake up and I was like,
03:54oh, so what do you want to see today?
03:55They'd be like, Glenn Powell.
03:56You want to see more, maybe, bands.
03:58And then they encouraged me to, like, message you loads,
04:01so then I sent all of these messages to you going,
04:03hey, Glenn, what are you doing today?
04:05Like, what acts are you going to go and see?
04:07I'm, like, booty calling you at, like, 11 o'clock at night.
04:10I did think you were a little thirsty.
04:13Exactly!
04:14Because you didn't realise that I was with these two girls.
04:17And then on the Monday morning I was like,
04:18oh, my God, he's going to think that I'm, like, his baby reindeer.
04:21I'm reading through all of these messages.
04:23One of them that you did not respond to,
04:25and I'm quite within your rights not to,
04:2711 o'clock at night on the Sunday,
04:29I'd sent him a message saying,
04:30Scissor Sisters, question mark?
04:34I thought that was some, like, British slang.
04:36I didn't know what that...
04:37Yeah, they weren't even playing at the festival, to be fair.
04:40Good, good.
04:41I was like, never accept the Scissor Sisters emoji, you know.
04:45And here you are, the new action hero on the block,
04:48sat next to one of the greatest action heroes of all time,
04:51Michelle Yeoh!
04:52Absolutely, absolutely.
04:54But, of course, you're not here kicking ass tonight,
04:59you're back with Wicked.
05:00And so, last time, the Wicked prester was insane.
05:04So where are you off to this time?
05:05You're off to Paris after this?
05:07Tonight.
05:08Oh, wow, OK.
05:09We have our screening in Paris tomorrow,
05:11then we come back here to London,
05:13and then we go to Singapore,
05:14and then we go to New York,
05:16and then the movie comes out.
05:18Wow.
05:19A new trip around the world.
05:20I guess, I mean, because it's been so many years,
05:22you're going to miss it when it's gone, aren't you?
05:24We are missing it already.
05:25Oh.
05:26It's been such an amazing family.
05:28And also, great that you put all that work in,
05:30and then it was a success.
05:32Phew!
05:33Can you imagine if Wicked...
05:35Turned out the way it did, no.
05:37Can't you imagine?
05:38Just limping around the world.
05:40Here's more of it.
05:41There's two and a half hours more, isn't it?
05:43There's two and a half hours more, isn't it?
05:45No, that's all.
05:46Thank God.
05:47No, thank God.
05:48Thank God.
05:49And now, it's a warm welcome back to Rosamund Pike.
05:51The last time we were here, it was a Zoom-y thing,
05:53and you were Zooming us from a cabin.
05:56Was it in Eastern Europe somewhere?
05:58It was my home, Graham.
06:00Oh!
06:01My home in Prague.
06:02Shade!
06:03A cabin in Eastern Europe.
06:05My home in Prague.
06:06It didn't...
06:07Do you have any lights?
06:08It looked very dark.
06:10LAUGHTER
06:11Well, it was lockdown.
06:12It was...
06:13We were, you know, hunkering down like the rest of the world.
06:17LAUGHTER
06:19Here's the thing, though.
06:20The last time we were on, broadcasting for your beautiful home in Prague...
06:24LAUGHTER
06:25We all at Envik.
06:27LAUGHTER
06:28You went a bit...
06:30You kind of found new fame, but in a very niche way.
06:33Oh, my gosh, yeah.
06:34You asked me about my family, my children speaking Chinese.
06:37Yes.
06:38And you asked me if they'd taught me anything.
06:41And I came out with one thing they'd taught me,
06:44which is a Chinese proverb, I suppose you'd call it.
06:47And apparently that clip went viral around China,
06:51and now I am recognised as the girl who tells fart jokes...
06:55LAUGHTER
06:57..and speaks proverbs about farting.
06:59So when I was doing the play in the summer at the National Theatre,
07:02people would come and bring me pillows and teddy bears,
07:05which, when I pressed the button,
07:07would come out with this Chinese phrase,
07:09..and I...
07:11LAUGHTER
07:12LAUGHTER
07:13Loving it.
07:14Yes.
07:15Loving it.
07:16Wow.
07:17It is hard.
07:18It is hard.
07:19She really did say fun pee, OK?
07:21LAUGHTER
07:22If it's so funny, Michelle let out a little fart.
07:24LAUGHTER
07:25Let out a little fart.
07:27LAUGHTER
07:28Now, Jackie, you have also found international fame
07:31from a story on the show.
07:33LAUGHTER
07:34I mean, it's very different to Chinese proverbs,
07:36but, yes, I do sometimes get recognised
07:38for my appearances on The Graham Norton Show.
07:40The last time it happened, I was on tour in Australia
07:43and I was in an airport with my family
07:46and a guy who recognised me was like,
07:48Oh, yeah, we love you, Jack Whitehall, yeah,
07:50that story you told on Graham Norton
07:52about not being able to flush your shit down the dunny.
07:55LAUGHTER
07:56And he stamped my passport and let me through.
07:58LAUGHTER
08:00People remember that story and then they just come up to you
08:02and say it with, like, no context.
08:04OK.
08:05So, Glenn, the challenge is on.
08:07LAUGHTER
08:08I've got to throw something out there.
08:09Do you remember when we had dinner at that place?
08:11What was the...
08:12With Pete, what was the name of the place we grabbed dinner?
08:14Dorian.
08:15Yes, Dorian.
08:16We...
08:17This place has one bathroom.
08:20This is the most awkward fan interaction I've ever had.
08:23I go to the bathroom and, you know, sometimes,
08:26you go to the bathroom and there's, like, toilet paper
08:28already, like, on... in the bottom of the toilet.
08:30Yeah, yeah.
08:31Right?
08:32So, I'm just, like, lift up the seat, pee, do the thing,
08:35and flush.
08:36And I realize now why there was toilet paper on there.
08:39It just flipped all this stuff underneath it.
08:44And I was, like, oh, my God.
08:46So, I'm, like, trying to do...
08:47I'm, like, this is crazy.
08:48So, wash my hands, leave, and as I open the door,
08:52there's about eight girls outside the bathroom door.
08:57And they go, oh, my God, sorry, we had to meet you.
08:59We wanted to say hi.
09:01And they're, like...
09:02And I was, like, are you guys going in here?
09:04And they're, like...
09:05They're, like, yeah.
09:06And they go, it wasn't me.
09:07That was, like, to the whole other person.
09:09I didn't do that.
09:10They're, like, what are you talking about?
09:11I was, like, you're gonna see a whole situation.
09:13I just wanna, like...
09:14I added to it, but not, like, in that way.
09:16I just wanted to know, Jack Whitehall did that.
09:19He's the toilet.
09:21He's the toilet.
09:22He's the toilet.
09:23It's this guy.
09:24Let's get started tonight with a new movie from Glenn Powell.
09:27It's called The Running Man.
09:28It's in cinemas from the 12th of November.
09:30And before we talk about it, here's a taste of what's in store.
09:33Am I trying to get myself killed?
09:36So, kiss my ass twice.
09:38Right there is why you can win this game.
09:41The rules are simple.
09:43Survive 30 days.
09:44With the entire nation hunting you down.
09:48And get your family out of Sloan's side for good.
09:51Hunt!
09:53Him!
09:54Down!
10:08Stop filming me!
10:11Have you ever wondered if this game is rigged?
10:14Guess we'll find out.
10:19Hey, buddy.
10:20You're on freebie.
10:22Wow!
10:23It is a fantastic kind of action thriller, huge sequences.
10:32You play Ben Richards.
10:33Tell us about Ben Richards.
10:34Ben Richards is a guy who was kind of put on a blacklist for trying to stand up for some of the guys he worked with.
10:42So he can't provide for his family.
10:44He can't get any job.
10:45And his daughter is really, really sick.
10:46So he signs up for this game show where no one has ever won it called The Running Man.
10:51Where the entire world can hunt someone down for 30 days.
10:55And it's life or death.
10:57So everybody, yeah.
10:58And if you win, you get a billion dollars.
11:00Wow!
11:01It's a hell of a show.
11:03And this is based on a Stephen King short story, is that right?
11:06Yeah.
11:07Stephen King wrote a book in the early 70s.
11:10Came out in 82.
11:11It's set in 2025.
11:12That's what I love.
11:13I love that he set it this year.
11:14Which is wild because everything that's happening in the story, it's all about deepfakes and fake news and all the things that are happening around it.
11:24And this all predated reality TV.
11:27Wow.
11:28It's pretty wild, yeah.
11:29It is The Running Man and clearly there is a lot of running in this show.
11:32Yes.
11:33So who better to advise you than king of running, Mr Tom Cruise?
11:36That's correct.
11:37Yeah.
11:38Because he is.
11:39Yes.
11:40He is.
11:41And did he advise you?
11:43He did.
11:44I mean, you know, I sort of thought Tom was going to give me like...
11:47I mean, you've been doing stunts your entire career.
11:50I mean, this was kind of my first time being out in front of an action movie.
11:53And, you know, so I was just like, all right, what do I need to know about, you know, kind of being in front of a thing?
11:57I thought it was going to be like a ten minute phone call.
11:59It turned into two and a half hours.
12:00Like, about him being like, this is how you don't die.
12:02Wow.
12:03Doing it, you know, doing an action.
12:05There's a lot of ways.
12:06I mean, I don't think I really realized, you know, you're like, okay, like the explosions are real, but I know kind of when they're coming.
12:12He's like, no, those can kill you.
12:13And like, you know, you jump off a bridge, like things snap, you know, people are tired, you know.
12:17So it was like really Tom kind of giving me a low down, but he also kind of gave me running lessons.
12:22He kind of said, you should film yourself running because you don't look as cool as you think you do.
12:27And he was really right.
12:30Like, yeah.
12:31I don't think, I don't know if the last time like you've run on camera, but you start paying attention to other people running, you're like, humans are weird looking things when they're trying to go fast, you know.
12:39And so, yeah, I tried to, you know, meet with a sprinting coach and kind of do it right.
12:43Right.
12:44And Tom, I mean, you, I guess credit Tom with this amazing career opportunity of Top Gun.
12:49Oh, absolutely.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Yeah.
12:52I mean, Top Gun was a movie that changed my life.
12:53And there was a time in which I wasn't going to do it.
12:56You know, I originally auditioned for Miles Teller's role, the role of Rooster.
13:00Yeah.
13:01And so then I get a call from Joe Kaczynski, who's the director, and he called me.
13:05I remember it was, it was on July 4th and I was wearing an American flag tank top.
13:14And I was on my balcony having a tequila soda and, and Joe Kaczynski called me and said, hey, you know, we're not giving you the role.
13:22We're going to, it's going to go to Miles.
13:24And, and my buddy thought I was getting Top Gun.
13:27So it's me sad in an American tank top.
13:30He was filming me getting this like super sad phone call on an American flag tank top on July 4th.
13:35Which is like, that's not great.
13:37But then Tom and I sat down and, you know, he, he kind of gave me the advice.
13:41He's like, you know, I, I said, I just don't think the, the role is, was up to, up to snuff.
13:47And I, I was a little bitter.
13:48I was kind of like the, you know, you don't want to get broken up with and then be like, hey, can we still be friends?
13:52You know what I mean?
13:53So I was kind of like, you know, I didn't think the role was really there.
13:56And he said, do you know how I've, you know, kind of done my career?
13:59And I said, how?
14:00And he said, well, I don't, you know, choose, you know, the roles.
14:03I choose the movies.
14:04You know, he goes, I choose good movies and then I make the roles great.
14:07And so he kind of convinced me right then and there.
14:09And it was like the best decision I've ever made.
14:11That is really good advice.
14:12Because Rosamund, you worked with the great Tom Cruise and Jack Reacher.
14:16You reached out to him for advice, didn't you?
14:18Tom is amazing.
14:19You remind me of him actually.
14:20Oh, okay.
14:21Great.
14:22You know, in a kind of, there's a, there's a, there's a lovely warm quality about you.
14:25All right, Rosamund.
14:26He has.
14:27You know, I mean, we've, we've.
14:29You're on television.
14:30I'm going to get the Scissor Sisters texts a little later.
14:37Maybe.
14:38I, I, yeah.
14:39I think I might write better texts.
14:40Um.
14:41You've had more than enough to drink, probably.
14:43Um, but, but Tom, no, he, I mean, he is a, he does sort of strike one as a mentor
14:49because he's been in the business for so long and he started so young and he's been a lead
14:52for his whole career, really.
14:53I mean, I love his advice about, you know, not choosing the roles, choosing the movies,
14:57but he has had the best roles in all the movies.
14:59Totally.
15:00He's done.
15:01It's great advice, but also, you know, um, but the night before I started filming Gone Girl,
15:09I was so frightened because I'd never had that sort of pressure of a, of a character
15:14in that kind of book with that level of director and those eyes on me and having to be American
15:19and all the rest of it.
15:20And I, I couldn't sleep.
15:21And at four in the morning, I thought, who, who can I write to, to get something?
15:25And I wrote to Tom saying, I'm not up to this and I'm terrified and I'm, and he wrote me
15:31back the kindest letter that immediately, because he obviously knew the call time was coming
15:37in about three hours.
15:38Yeah.
15:39And he sort of said, you know, you've, you've got this and you are ready and, and, and other
15:43things, but it was a very, it was a very significant gesture.
15:48Yeah.
15:49Um, of someone with that level of fame and people writing to him and probably how busy
15:53he is.
15:54I mean, the guy sleeps one hour a night or something.
15:56I mean, you know, that could have been his hour of sleep.
16:00He was very tired the next day.
16:04And Glenn, tell me this, because Topcon, you, you know, you were in it, you saw it, you
16:09knew that you were good in it.
16:11This is going to change your life.
16:12And then it got delayed.
16:14And I don't remember this because of COVID, it kept getting delayed.
16:17You must have been going out of your mind.
16:19Well, it's also like you're going out of your mind.
16:21You're also running out of money.
16:22You know what I mean?
16:23You're also like, oh man, I'm sort of waiting for this movie to come out for, for my career
16:28to start.
16:29I'm a very poor movie star.
16:30I'm a very poor movie star.
16:31It's like, it's not great.
16:32You know?
16:33Uh, and, and so, you know, and every time it got delayed, I would get a call from Tom to
16:40like, let me know it was getting delayed, which was really sweet of him.
16:43But it was also like, you start like dodging Tom's calls like a loan shark.
16:47You're like, shit, Tom's calling me again.
16:50I know what this means.
16:51Please don't call me again.
16:52Yeah, please don't call me again.
16:53But then it's funny.
16:54I'm actually hosting SNL next week.
16:56Oh, cool.
16:57Yeah.
16:58And, uh, it's, I'm really excited about it.
17:02And, uh, but I was supposed to host SNL.
17:05That fault, like, I, so they had to literally, uh, Warren Michaels had to take back
17:09the offer for me to host SNL.
17:12So I was supposed to host SNL, like, four years ago.
17:14Wow.
17:15And so I finally get to, uh, to host next week after.
17:18So every time Top Gun got delayed, Lauren called me up and I'm like,
17:22is everybody taking everything in my life away?
17:25I'm a movie star.
17:27Let me be a movie star.
17:29Well, listen, you can see, uh, Gled in The Running Man from next Wednesday.
17:33Very good.
17:34Michelle Yeoh brings us the epic conclusion to the wicked saga, Wicked For Good.
17:47It's out on the 21st of November.
17:50So this is essentially like the second act.
17:52Yes.
17:53Right.
17:54It doesn't matter.
17:55Yeah.
17:56But you know the yellow brick road.
17:57Yeah.
17:58So, uh,
17:59You should watch the first one.
18:00Of course.
18:01Of course.
18:02Uh, so where do we find, uh, Madame Marble now?
18:05What's going on as we join act two?
18:07So act two is much more emotional because as in act one, you've met all the different characters
18:13and they've made choices and with choices, there are consequences.
18:18Um, the yellow brick road is being built and then Alphaba has been ostracized.
18:24She's now living by herself in the, in the forest.
18:27And she's got the book of spells, which is something that Madame Marble wants back most desperately.
18:34So she's made Alphaba the Wicked Witch.
18:37When in all honesty, Madame Marble, MM, flip it around, Wicked Witch.
18:44Oh.
18:45Ooh.
18:46Yes.
18:47She's a real manipulator.
18:49Yeah.
18:50Wizard of Oz.
18:52Alphaba.
18:53Still trying to work it out.
18:55Yeah.
18:56World Wide Web.
19:01It's, it's stunning.
19:07I mean, John Chu, uh, as usual with Alice Brooks, um, is such a cinematic experience.
19:14Like one.
19:15But this one leads you down paths.
19:17Um, you meet who's the Tin Man, who is the Scarecrow, who is the, the cowardly lion.
19:23Yeah.
19:24Um, and most important, what happens to Alphaba and Galinda?
19:29And part of Madame Marble's, uh, job is kind of promoting Glinda as the Good Witch.
19:36And we've got a clip and this is you helping Glinda on her way.
19:40The public is on edge.
19:42So it's more important than ever that you lived everyone's spirits as only you can.
19:51Accordingly.
19:52Oh, Madame, I love it.
19:56What is it?
19:57Your new mode of transport.
20:00Your very own vehicular spherical globule.
20:03So like, a bubble?
20:06Sure.
20:10I love the Ariana Grande there.
20:20Oh, she's brilliant.
20:21Am I right, Michelle, you've never been in a musical before?
20:23Never.
20:24This was my first time.
20:25I went, John Chu, bless him, because we worked together in Crazy Rich Asians.
20:29Yeah, I am.
20:30And so he wrote to me and he said, Michelle, can you read the script?
20:33I would love you to play Madame Marble.
20:35And I was like, Madame who?
20:37And Wicked.
20:38I knew, I heard of Wicked, but I hadn't gone to see it in West End or in New York.
20:43There's a gasp of horror.
20:44I know.
20:45How could you?
20:47So anyway, I read it and I go, I called him back and go like, excuse me, it's a musical.
20:51She sings, you know.
20:53And he go like, you know, I don't sing, right?
20:56He goes, nah, you'll be fine.
20:58And typical of John, he can convince you to do the impossible.
21:03And so he convinced me.
21:04Wow.
21:05And I'm so glad he did, because the first time when I walked onto the stage and it was a forest scene,
21:11and I suddenly, you know, it's like you walk in, it's silence, like this.
21:16And suddenly you hear a voice.
21:19And it was just Cynthia warming up.
21:22She wasn't even singing a song yet.
21:24Her voice is just so incredible.
21:26Yeah.
21:27So when I had my singing, and thanks to her, I'm in Billboard 100 in that song because of her.
21:34Yeah.
21:37That was amazing.
21:38They sing life, both her, Cynthia and Ariana, even when she's in the harness doing all those somersaults,
21:48she's singing life.
21:49It's amazing.
21:50These two girls are just like little angels.
21:53And when it came to my turn to sing with her, typical, you know, we have to tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, and then it's your turn to sing.
22:00I'm like...
22:02I literally was just doing, like, miming the words.
22:06And Cynthia just took my hand and she goes, like, I know you can do this.
22:10I've heard you before.
22:12And having that kind of, you know, when someone takes you out and giving you that confidence was one of the most beautiful things I had.
22:20And so I sang with her.
22:22Yeah.
22:23And we were on Billboard 100.
22:24Yeah, you did.
22:28Now...
22:29This is rare.
22:30Very rare.
22:31We have not one, but two Bond girls on our sofa.
22:35Oh!
22:36Because Rosamund...
22:39Rosamund was in Die Another Day, and then Michelle, you were in Tomorrow Never Dies.
22:46Tomorrow Never Dies.
22:47Both of your Bonds were Pierce Brosnan.
22:48Yes, Rosamund.
22:49You said no to this.
22:50You didn't want to do it.
22:51Or is that not true?
22:52That's not true.
22:53I thought I was offered to play 007.
22:56You're like, yeah, good idea.
22:59Yeah, I'll do that.
23:00Yeah.
23:01Because I didn't fit in the traditional Bond girl, I thought.
23:08So I had to prove them wrong.
23:10Yeah.
23:11Yes.
23:12And...
23:13But Pierce was keen that you did do fighting.
23:16Yes.
23:17He's amazing.
23:18He's...
23:19He's...
23:20You know when you're confident as a man, right?
23:23When you see a woman fighting, you go, good for you.
23:26You know how to take care of yourself.
23:28I don't have to lift you up all the time.
23:31So when we did the action sequences, Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson were fantastic.
23:35I'm sure you knew them.
23:36Mm-hmm.
23:37And she...
23:38They...
23:39I brought my own team from Hong Kong.
23:41I would love for you to do stunts in Hong Kong.
23:44If you love to do your own stunts.
23:45I would love to do that.
23:46Yeah.
23:47That's the place to do.
23:48I will not be a Bond girl.
23:49No.
23:50Okay.
23:51I will do the Bond girl thing.
23:52Okay.
23:53Okay.
23:54And we did this whole action sequence in the bicycle shop.
23:58And the...
23:59Because in Hong Kong, we don't have rehearsal times.
24:03We walk onto the set, fully dressed, ready to go, and we are told exactly what we have to do.
24:09So right there and then, they'll say, okay, these two guys are coming at you.
24:13And we shoot it right away.
24:16That's how...
24:17Oh, my God.
24:18I know.
24:19Super dangerous.
24:20Super dangerous.
24:21But I think that's the way we've always made movies in Hong Kong in the 80s.
24:26Because that was how it was.
24:28And Pierce would just come onto the set, fold his arms, watch, and go like, yeah, I like this.
24:34So, yeah, he was really, really cool.
24:36He didn't have any feeling that...
24:39And it's true.
24:40You're James Bond.
24:41Who's going to take that away from you, right?
24:43Totally.
24:44Yeah.
24:45So, we had a great time.
24:46Because, Rosamund, am I right that you didn't know a lot about Bond?
24:49No.
24:50I mean, this story makes me sound like an idiot.
24:52No!
24:53I was so young, but that's very sweet of you.
24:56It's not really an excuse.
24:58Yes, I hadn't...
25:00Yes, I hadn't seen a Bond film when I got cast.
25:03Is that because your parents were very protective?
25:05They thought they were too...
25:06We didn't have a television.
25:07OK.
25:08Weirdo.
25:09LAUGHTER
25:12She grew up in a cabin.
25:14It's lovely.
25:15It's really nice.
25:17It's not COVID at all.
25:18She lives off-grid in Prague.
25:24But then you got invited to...
25:26To audition, yeah.
25:27Yeah.
25:28And they said, you know, just wear, you know, some of your own clothes,
25:30you know, some business attire and an evening dress.
25:34And I didn't have...
25:35Well, I didn't have business attire, so I had to go to my neighbour
25:37and borrow that.
25:38But I did have evening dress, because my mother was a singer.
25:42So she had a great sort of 80s evening dress made by my grandmother,
25:46which was beautiful, kind of big silk taffeta, you know, like a peacock.
25:51It had huge roses on it.
25:52I thought the roses were a bit much, so I took them off.
25:54Anyway, I arrived with this dress in its huge bag, you know,
25:57at the...at the audition.
25:59And the costume designers and Barbara Broccoli looked at this dress
26:02and they said, well, that...
26:04That is a very, very beautiful dress.
26:07But Bond girls wear things more like this.
26:10And they held up what looked like, to me, like five pieces of string.
26:17And I realised then that I had a whole education yet to happen.
26:21But you got the part.
26:22I did.
26:23Well, they thought, we've got to teach this poor girl something.
26:25Listen, you can see Michelle in Wicked For Good from the 21st of November.
26:31November.
26:32Yeah.
26:35Rosamund Pike's latest movie offering is Now You See Me, Now You Don't.
26:40It's in cinemas from the 14th of November.
26:42That's next Friday.
26:43So, yeah.
26:44So this is the third item in this series of kind of magicians,
26:50kind of Robin Hood magicians who do these big heists.
26:53So how do you fit into the world?
26:56Has anyone seen the Now You See Me movies?
26:58CHEERING
26:59They're gorgeous.
27:00They're gorgeous movies, which is why I wanted to be part of it.
27:02It's a group of magicians who are a motley crew,
27:05a kind of motley family, a dysfunctional family, if you were.
27:08And they set out to tear down some of the nastiest people on the planet
27:14and redistribute their wealth.
27:17People who've earned wealth through very, you know, nefarious methods.
27:23And I play one of those people.
27:24It's my villain era.
27:26And I play a diamond heiress who's heiress to a diamond mine.
27:31She's South African and she's definitely trading with people she shouldn't.
27:36It's her diamonds are covered in blood.
27:38Her money's covered in blood.
27:39It's all the nasty stuff.
27:40And we will relish.
27:41I love her name.
27:42Tell us her name.
27:43Her name is Veronica Vandenberg.
27:46Or Veronica Vandenberg.
27:48If we're South African here.
27:51We have a clip.
27:52This is you as Veronica Vandenberg showing off your diamond to one of the four horsemen played by Jesse Eisenberg.
28:01You're wonderful, Jesse Eisenberg.
28:02Now, a wise man once told me, in the mirror in fact,
28:05never assume you're the smartest person in the room.
28:08Prove it.
28:09Be my guest.
28:10All right.
28:11Well, let's see if we can get that case open.
28:13Uh, abracadabra.
28:14Huh.
28:15Nope.
28:16Uh, alakazam.
28:17Wait.
28:20Open sesame.
28:28Still safe with me?
28:30No.
28:31Relax.
28:32Mmm.
28:33Relax, Veronica.
28:34Now, as your ads like to remind us, diamonds are forever.
28:37Ooh.
28:38Ooh.
28:43Now, Rosalind, you are known for doing research for roles.
28:46So, how do you get into this?
28:48Did you kind of meet people who own incredibly big diamonds and things?
28:53Well, I tried.
28:54I mean, I tried to meet all the people who deal with, you know, in the arms trade
28:58and who sort of fund small wars.
29:01I mean, I really tried.
29:02I tried to...
29:03I'm playing a horrible person.
29:04Wow.
29:05Would you like to be my muse?
29:06Would you like to be my muse?
29:07LAUGHTER
29:08Can I take you out for lunch and ask you all about the nefarious dealings you do?
29:12And, of course, everyone I managed to find was utterly reasonable,
29:17very kind of ethical, and that was just not what I wanted.
29:20So, I knew that within about five minutes of meeting them and thought,
29:23now what do I talk about for the rest of the lunch?
29:25LAUGHTER
29:26Because, you know, all I'm interested in is how you do this job,
29:29how you do ill in this business.
29:31Yeah.
29:32Which, of course, you know, for all I know, they were my character
29:35and they were just hiding it.
29:36Oh.
29:37But, you know, maybe.
29:38Well, weirdly, someone who does know about the whole jewellery industry
29:41is Jack Whitehall.
29:42This is so weird.
29:43What?
29:44What?
29:45To you?
29:46Oh, no.
29:47No, didn't you?
29:48You did the...
29:49No, I did an event recently.
29:50Yes.
29:51The Louvre?
29:52No, it wasn't the Louvre.
29:53It was great.
29:54You're nearly there.
29:55You're not going off.
29:57It was so bad.
29:58It was a good one.
29:59I was doing this thing.
30:00I was booked to do the jewellery awards,
30:02the Grand Prix de la Haute Jewellery in Monaco,
30:05and it was full of French speakers.
30:07It was like the sort of Oscars of jewellery.
30:09They booked me as host for some reason,
30:11and I was like, what the hell am I going to talk about?
30:14The jewellery awards.
30:15And then it was the same week as the Louvre heist.
30:17So I was like, oh, my God, thank you, comedy gods.
30:20Like, there's my monologue.
30:22I turn up to this event.
30:23It was all French speakers.
30:25I was the only person speaking English on the stage.
30:28The woman that came out before me was like the Anna Wintour
30:31of jewellery, and she gave a speech in French that obviously
30:34I did not understand, but I was subsequently told that in the speech
30:37she had said quite earnestly that the Louvre heist was one of the
30:41most tragic things ever to happen to the French people,
30:44and that the nation would rally together and get through
30:47this difficult time.
30:48Ladies and gentlemen, Jack Whitehall,
30:50I walked out in a high-vis vest with a load of prop jewellery
30:55that I bought on Sheen.
30:57I was like, right, who wants Napoleon's tiara?
31:00Fucking tumbleweed.
31:02It was...
31:03Oh, right on my arse.
31:05It was...
31:06Oh, no.
31:07That is amazing.
31:09Oh.
31:10I think I said the word heist five times in my monologue,
31:15which it turns out at Jewellery Awards saying heist is like shouting
31:18bomb at an airport.
31:19It was horrendous.
31:20I love that thing that came out a couple of days ago,
31:22that their security password is Louvre.
31:28Really?
31:29Probably with a zero instead of a no.
31:30No, no, just Louvre.
31:31Not even an exclamation mark at the end.
31:32Just Louvre.
31:33Louvre.
31:34Yeah, got it.
31:35A reminder that Now You See Me Now You Don't,
31:36that opens next Friday.
31:37APPLAUSE
31:39But if psychological superheroes are your thing,
31:42Jack Whitehall brings us a new series.
31:44It's called Malice,
31:45and it's out on the 14th of November on Prime Video.
31:48And here is a bit of the trailer.
31:51Hi.
31:52You must be Jamie.
31:53Yeah.
31:54Adam.
31:55So nice to meet you.
31:56Oh, man, he showed up.
31:57Imagine me and you.
31:58I do.
31:59You're going for the kids?
32:00Yeah.
32:01I'm pre-lating Rick.
32:02Oh, man, he showed up.
32:03Imagine me and you.
32:04I do.
32:05You're going for the kids?
32:06Yeah.
32:07I'm pre-lating Rick.
32:08Yeah.
32:09I'm pre-lating, really.
32:10Well, let's see how the other half live.
32:11Well, welcome to our vacation.
32:12I believe that's our song.
32:15Oh.
32:16Sorry.
32:21I see what you mean about him.
32:25He cooks.
32:27He actually plays with the kids.
32:30Well, there's something...
32:33Something what?
32:34I don't know.
32:35Go on, then.
32:36What is the worst thing you've ever done?
32:39Ooh.
32:40APPLAUSE
32:41I was saying to you backstage, Jack, this is so impressive.
32:46It's a really different sort of role for you.
32:49So tell us who you play, what's going on.
32:51Yeah, so I play Adam, who is this very charming manny tutor that's invited into this wealthy family's home to look after their kids, but he's got an ulterior motive and is sort of hell-bent on getting vengeance on David Duchovny's character, who plays the sort of patriarch of the family.
33:10And it is properly.
33:11And it is properly.
33:12It goes to really dark places.
33:13Yeah.
33:14I mean, it's kind of got a White Lotus-y vibe.
33:16There's a little bit of, as Rosamund was saying backstage, wealth porn.
33:19LAUGHTER
33:20There's definitely a bit of that sort of, you know, glamorous, you know, picturesque Greek island and all of that.
33:27Yeah.
33:28But then, yeah, it's got a kind of talented Mr Ripley vibe as well.
33:31Yeah.
33:32This cuckoo-in-the-nest thriller.
33:33But, yeah, for me, it's just a completely different part to anything I've ever played before because I'm playing a proper villain in it.
33:39And, yeah, it was really fun.
33:42And now, there's quite a lot of sexy time in Malice.
33:45There's a little...
33:46Yes, my character is also sexually quite adventurous.
33:51Oh, yes.
33:52And...
33:53Episode two, everybody.
33:54Yes, episode two.
33:55Episode two.
33:56In the second episode, he attends a sex club and participates in an orgy.
34:02Oh, wow.
34:03Of the homosexual variety.
34:04Well, I think it's all welcome.
34:06Every variety.
34:07Everyone's welcome, yes.
34:08Yeah.
34:09And a phrase just came into my head there that it's definitely not appropriate for a television show.
34:13We can cut it out afterwards.
34:14Any holes of gold.
34:15No, I...
34:16LAUGHTER
34:17Please do.
34:18And please do.
34:19Anyway...
34:20Oh, God.
34:21My mum and dad are in tonight.
34:23I, er...
34:24Right, so, yes, he goes to an orgy.
34:26And I read that on the page and I was like, oh, you know, my head, it's like sort of eyes wide shot,
34:30it'll be quite erotic, far from erotic.
34:33We filmed it at eight o'clock in the morning on a Tuesday in a strip club in Watford called Beavers.
34:39LAUGHTER
34:40And I was there with a lot of other people and there was one gentleman in particular
34:45who we had to have quite a lot of intimacy with and he was, er, not a Bond girl.
34:50He was a middle-aged man from Hemel Hempstead called Jeff.
34:54LAUGHTER
34:55He stood there with like a cushion strapped round his midriff.
34:58And the actual intimacy with him was quite awkward, but the most awkward bit was like the breaks in filming
35:05when there was like a little pause and then we had to...
35:07Yeah, the chit chat.
35:08Yeah, the chit chat.
35:09During one of the breaks of this very intense scene, he genuinely turned to me and went,
35:14Jack, I hope you wouldn't mind, but could I get a selfie?
35:17LAUGHTER
35:19I was like, er, yeah, maybe we could wait till after the orgy.
35:22LAUGHTER
35:23It's not orgy etiquette to have a selfie.
35:25He was like, it's just that my son's a really big fan of yours.
35:28LAUGHTER
35:29I thought he fucking won't be when he sees this.
35:32LAUGHTER
35:34Malice starts next Friday.
35:36Jack Whitehall, everybody.
35:38CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
35:40OK.
35:41It is time to meet our music guest tonight.
35:44This man has won four Grammys and seven Brit Awards
35:48and is one of the biggest names in pop music.
35:51Please welcome Mr. Ed Sheeran. Here he comes.
35:53CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
35:55There you go.
36:08Yeah, Ed Sheeran.
36:10Right now.
36:11Whoo!
36:12You good.
36:13I'm good.
36:14Excellent.
36:15Now, do you know Glendo?
36:16No.
36:17No?
36:18Oh, well, now you do.
36:19I know who he is.
36:20Oh, Ed Sheeran.
36:21Not as close as me and Jack, but we'll get there.
36:24LAUGHTER
36:25Were you in the orgy as well?
36:26I was.
36:27I was.
36:28It's a busy time, yeah.
36:29I'm still left out.
36:30LAUGHTER
36:31It'll be season two, don't worry, Ed.
36:33Michelle Yeoh, a big Ed Sheeran fan.
36:36Big fan.
36:37We've met before, yeah, yeah.
36:38He met at the Met Gala.
36:39You were so sweet.
36:40Oh, you too.
36:41You were with Stella.
36:42That was a mad night.
36:43It was the first time I'd ever been to anything like that
36:45and it was like, you know, you go in on your own
36:47and suddenly there's just everyone you've ever seen, ever.
36:50Wow.
36:51Is that the first Met Gala you've been to?
36:53Yeah.
36:54I don't know, I'm kind of like, I feel like I've done it now.
36:56You know, there was a curiosity.
36:58Yes.
36:59And it was fun.
37:00You could walk up to anyone.
37:01No-one had any entourage so you could just walk up to anyone
37:03and be like that.
37:04Sounds like my orgy.
37:05LAUGHTER
37:06But he had a beautiful suit on, OK?
37:08Yes.
37:09Yeah.
37:10Nice.
37:11It's not just a cushion.
37:12LAUGHTER
37:13With a cushion.
37:14LAUGHTER
37:15LAUGHTER
37:16Have you been...?
37:17Is that what it was for?
37:19LAUGHTER
37:21Have you been back to Beavers since?
37:23No.
37:24Do you know it?
37:25I think it's amazing there's a strip club called Beavers.
37:28You're called Beavers.
37:29LAUGHTER
37:30I love that.
37:32Now, we're very excited, Ed, because you are performing for us tonight.
37:35I hope so.
37:36Yeah, no, you are.
37:37I hope so.
37:38We all hope so.
37:40There's a lot of lights over there.
37:42Something better happen.
37:43What are you performing for us?
37:44I'm playing a song called Camera.
37:46Ah, OK.
37:47Whoa!
37:48That is off the album Play, but now Play is out in a deluxe.
37:52You've got the new version.
37:53Yeah, this is the deluxe one.
37:54It's out on the 28th of November, and it's sort of like a coffee table book.
37:58It's gorgeous.
37:59Yeah, do you know what?
38:00There was a few, like, iterations of this record.
38:03I did a lot of, like, exploring musically and different things,
38:07and then I ended up just moving to India for a bit
38:10and making the record there and finishing it with, like,
38:13amazing Indian musicians and producers and translators and blah, blah, blah.
38:18But there was, like, a good two months where I made a load of songs with Dave
38:22as a producer on this, but they sort of live in their own world,
38:25but they didn't necessarily live.
38:27So the iterations of the record are essentially the extended version of this.
38:32Now, this one's called Play, and we know, you know,
38:35a lot of your album titles were kind of the mathematical symbols,
38:38multiplied, etc.
38:39So Play, this is a new era.
38:42Yeah, so this, I kind of see this as it's called stereo.
38:45It would be, like, play, pause, rewind, fast-forward, stop.
38:47And I don't want to bring everyone down,
38:49but you have already got a plan for a posthumous album.
38:52What?
38:53Yeah, I think that's just sensible.
38:55I've had friends die without wills, and it's fucking chaotic.
39:00And all I'm saying is I have a plan for when I pass away.
39:04I know what songs I want at my funeral.
39:06I know where I want to be buried.
39:07I think that's a sensible thing to have.
39:09And there's so many...
39:10Ed, you're very organised.
39:12I don't know, but I think that there's a lot of posthumous albums
39:15that have come out of artists that we know and love
39:17that I don't know if they'd have wanted them out in that sequence
39:21or the mixes of it or blah, blah, blah.
39:23So all I'm saying is when I pass away, the thing that comes out
39:27is the thing that I want to come out.
39:29And has that album got a title?
39:31Eject.
39:32What?
39:33Eject.
39:34Eject.
39:35That's amazing.
39:37What does that tour look like?
39:42What, the Eject tour?
39:44I don't know, maybe I'll just be putting formaldehyde
39:46and just sort of taking my own glasses.
39:48We must mention the documentary film One Shot.
39:51This is going to be on Netflix.
39:53It's directed by Philip Barantini.
39:55Now, he's the man who directed Boiling Point and Adolescence.
39:58So one shot is the thing.
40:00So what is your one shot, Ed?
40:02I honestly think that this is the best thing that I've done in my entire career.
40:07I love it.
40:08It was, while I was doing it, I kept looking at Phil being like,
40:11you're mad.
40:13What his mind does, like, the fact, it was one camera
40:17and we start in a venue and then we go out the venue
40:19and bear in mind it's all live, there's no, like, extras,
40:22it's just people that we meet on the street.
40:25And by, we did three takes and by the third take it was, like, chaotic.
40:28People knew that we were doing it.
40:29We couldn't really, like, move around.
40:30But we go from the stage into a taxi.
40:33We then drive in the taxi to the High Line
40:35and then we walk across the High Line
40:36and then we play a gig, all playing songs as we walk.
40:40And then we get on the top of a bus
40:42and the bus gets, there's a traffic jam,
40:44which we didn't, like, take into account.
40:47And then I get off there and then I go into a hotel.
40:49We go up to the top of a hotel.
40:50They then put the camera on a drone,
40:52which flies down as I'm performing.
40:54And then I run across to an Irish bar
40:55and then I leave the Irish bar and get in a car.
40:57And then I drive from the car to the subway.
41:00Then I get on the subway, travel,
41:02then play another song walking to the venue
41:04and then play a gig.
41:05It is, it's mad.
41:07Like, really, really mad.
41:08I love it. We've got a clip.
41:10This is, I just love this.
41:11This is very near the end.
41:12Yeah.
41:13So this is, you're in a shop, you're buying a hat
41:15and then you're walking out towards the venue
41:17to start your gig.
41:19And so this guy didn't know you were coming into the store.
41:22Well, this is the second time we shot it.
41:23Oh, I see, so he knows.
41:24He was aware this time.
41:25Okay.
41:26But we did one that was like a rehearsal
41:28that went terribly wrong.
41:29And then you were singing the whole time.
41:31Yeah.
41:32These guys were on the subway with us beforehand
41:34and they would just follow us.
41:35Oh, they followed you, yeah.
41:36And so this is the, you can see the theatre,
41:38you're just approaching the theatre now.
41:40I'm out of sight.
41:41And then at some point someone says,
41:43hurry up.
41:44I'll give it all for you in time.
41:45Hurry up.
41:46Hurry up.
41:47Am I on time?
41:50Am I good?
41:52On time?
41:53Yeah.
41:54Cheers, mate.
41:55And this is the theatre you left an hour before.
41:57Yeah, and then they filled it with 2,000 fans within the hour.
42:01How are you feeling?
42:02Yeah, yeah, great.
42:03Crowd good?
42:04All right.
42:05Great.
42:06I love this.
42:07Here we go.
42:08CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
42:09It's not wild.
42:10CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
42:11I know, it's great.
42:12It's so good.
42:13I love it.
42:14I genuinely think that's the best thing.
42:15It's so good.
42:16I love it.
42:17APPLAUSE
42:18I genuinely think that's the best thing I've ever been involved in in my career.
42:37Well, listen, seeing you walking to that theatre has got us all in the mood for hearing you sing.
42:42Right.
42:43So, if you'd like to head over to the stage.
42:45CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
42:46There goes Mr. Ed Sheeran.
42:51He's approaching the stage.
42:53He has arrived.
42:54Here, performing camera, it is Ed Sheeran.
42:59CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
43:01You should see the way the stars illuminate your stunning silhouette.
43:15You're glowing in the dark.
43:18I had to count to ten and take a breath.
43:22You think that you don't have beauty in abundance but you do.
43:30And that's the truth.
43:35You're frozen in motion.
43:38A perfect picture in a frame.
43:42Some visions don't ever fade.
43:46I don't need a camera to capture this moment.
43:51I remember how you look tonight.
43:56For all my eyes.
43:59When everything is black and white, your colour's exploding.
44:04There's something in the way you shine.
44:09I don't need a camera when you're in my eyes.
44:14You should see the way this night is unfolding beautifully for us.
44:24It's getting late, but I don't mind.
44:27We'll take this in until the sun comes up.
44:31And I think that what we have is like every dream I had came true.
44:39Lying here with you.
44:40Lying here with you.
44:41Lying here with you.
44:45A photo could not show the way my heart is beating big.
44:51Some visions don't ever fade.
44:56I don't need a camera to capture this moment.
44:59I don't need a camera to capture this moment.
45:02I don't need a camera when you're my eyes.
45:03Then, I flash it's safe.
45:04Come on.
45:05I don't need a camera when you're in my eyes.
45:08When everything is black and white, your color's exploding
45:13There's something in the way you shine
45:19I don't need a camera when you're in my eyes
45:25And in a flash, it's gone
45:27But I'll keep holding on
45:30To every little detail in the fabric of the night
45:33Never letting go of it inside
45:36I don't need a camera to capture this moment
45:53I remember how you look tonight
45:58For all my life
46:01When everything is black and white, your color's exploding
46:06There's something in the way you shine
46:11I don't need a camera
46:15But you're in my eyes
46:20Wow
46:25Ed Sheeran and the Flames Collective Youth Choir
46:30Come on back, Ed
46:32Such a lovely job
46:35Thank you so much
46:37The Flames Collective Youth Choir
46:39How good is it today?
46:40That choir so lovely, Flames Collective Youth Choir
46:49So good
46:49Well thank you very much guys, thank you so much
46:52And talking of young performers, Ed Sheeran, you've had, this sounds unlikely, you've had a busy week in Parliament
47:03Yeah
47:04Yeah
47:04Yeah
47:05Tell us what happened
47:05I wrote Keir Starmer a letter
47:08Because I feel like the arts in general, but in schools, have really been like underfunded and cut over the last, well ever since I was a kid
47:19And I feel like, I went to a state school in Suffolk and my music teacher was fantastic and I feel like he is one of the reasons why I am where I am
47:30And we were just sort of rapidly losing that and I feel like as a country, like yes, we have a lot that we offer as a country, but the thing that we're most proud of, like that we're really proud of everywhere we go around the world is our art, it's our painters, it's our filmmakers, it's our actors, it's our musicians, it's our poets and comedians
47:52No, but seriously, but the arts, and it's the thing, you know
47:58I wasn't even mentioning television
48:00If, you know, and also not just that, like financially it brings 7.6 billion music alone into the UK economy
48:10And so to like defund all of that and then wonder where the next generation of like art is going to come from
48:17And, you know, so I wrote a letter to Keir and I said, for one thing, there's a thing called EBAC that was put on music that basically it made it the DOS subject
48:26That if people took it wouldn't count as much for universities and blah, blah, blah, so I asked for that to be removed
48:31I asked for funding to be put into underprivileged schools for music
48:35I asked for the curriculum to be changed so it wasn't so classically focused
48:39It could be like pop music or it could be rock music or it could be things that make kids want to go
48:45Do you know what? I want to learn a Taylor Swift song, not I have to learn Bach and be able to read
48:49Because that that's not the way that I learned music so I asked for a curriculum change and I asked for
48:54Instruments to be bought for schools and I sent this letter maybe like eight months ago
48:59And I just thought if he'd just read it and gone, you know what like I'm in enough shit at the moment
49:06But I got a letter back from him maybe two months ago just basically saying thank you for your letter
49:11I'll have a think about it and that was kind of it and then about two three days ago
49:16They said oh, they're gonna bring it up in Parliament and he approved it and it's yeah, it's gone
49:21It's gone
49:25That's so amazing
49:27Yeah, I think it's like
49:29It's the first it's the first step in a lot of a lot of things
49:34I think that Keir Starmer has listened to the first step that my foot's in the door now and then I can continue badgering him
49:40Ed, thank you for caring and I'm sure kids up and down the country
49:43Thank you for that. Yeah, always a treat to see you and thank you for that amazing performance. Ed Sheeran, everybody
49:51That's it for tonight. No time for red chairs of the parade, so please say thank you to the rest of my guests
