00:00Coming up on Cards and Collectibles.
00:07The force is strong with this collector.
00:13We get in amongst it at a trade day.
00:17The holy grail of all toys amongst a movie memorabilia museum.
00:24And a modern card collector whose rookie year cards are skyrocketing.
00:29There's hidden treasures all over this country.
00:36Vintage sports cards, they're almost like antiques.
00:39Come on a journey with Cards and Collectibles Australia
00:42where collectors from across the continent unite to showcase their treasures.
00:47It's got to be seven figures, it's got to be a million dollars plus.
00:50Witness the passion, the money and the stories behind Australia's most coveted collectibles.
00:57Back then they were laughing and now they call me a genius.
01:07In the 1970s and 80s action figures weren't something that anyone thought would be an investment opportunity.
01:14But today in a galaxy not too far away we find a dedicated Star Wars collector who has mastered the art of the hunt.
01:23Welcome to my collector room.
01:32As well as toys I've got about 7,000 comics.
01:38In the mid 90s I remember my dad coming home and I was like dad there's this TV show on the X-Men.
01:47And he goes it's a comic book.
01:48And I'm like what's that?
01:49And he came back the next day with X-Men Adventures number 6 from the local news agent.
01:54And I was hooked ever since.
01:56Decided to get every comic in the X-Men since my birthday.
01:59Over the years managed to do all that and then now I've decided to creep earlier into the 70s and some in the 60s.
02:05This is my X-Men shelf and my pride piece of my collection X-Men number 1.
02:10It wasn't until later in the 90s that I went to my first comic con and I saw someone selling vintage original Star Wars figures.
02:21I didn't even know that was a thing. I didn't know people kept them on cards.
02:29My main focus for a long time was just the action figures.
02:32I loved them on the cards ever since that day that I saw the original.
02:35I had this big plan that I was going to go back and get all the originals.
02:38But then I saw the price and decided that a lot of moderns in the interim will be good.
02:43Just the happy memories I think of Saturday's VHS watching them non-stop for years and years.
02:52It's just created now an absolute passion for Star Wars.
02:57I really wanted to get a cosplay outfit.
03:00The problem is I am too shy to wear cosplay out in public.
03:05But I bought two Stormtrooper full sets of armour.
03:08I got a full custom fitted Stormtrooper and Shadowtrooper.
03:12One of my favourite pieces is the Darth Vader premium format.
03:16I got it for my 40th birthday and it's just been a centrepiece ever since.
03:20Real menacing pose.
03:23He got his lightsaber up, his hands out, force choke.
03:28Absolute centrepiece for the collection.
03:30My son, he's nearly three. He loves it as much as I do.
03:34We come into the room, we have lightsaber battles, we play Star Wars music.
03:37He's a little bit hands-on, so I get a bit nervous when he comes in the room.
03:41I think it'll be a lifelong bond for us.
03:44Return of the Jedi is my favourite film.
03:46There is over 70, I think, mints on card and I'm sitting at roughly 25, working my way through the list.
03:53I quite like just going on the hunt to find shops that might have one.
04:01I like to try and do it with the person. I don't mind a bit of a haggle.
04:04I would feel very complete if I could get the entire Return of the Jedi set.
04:08And I also think it's doable.
04:10I met Carrie Fisher at a Star Wars celebration.
04:14And I think I went on a crazy hunt and bought as many Princess Leia action figures as I could.
04:18And they're probably the biggest part of my collection and where I have the most feels.
04:22For all Star Wars, especially action figures, the Holy Grail is what they call the 12 backs.
04:33The original 12 Star Wars action figures.
04:36I made a purchase a long time ago and bought the R2-D2 AFA graded.
04:44The guy didn't even want to mail it. We agreed to meet up.
04:47He was just nervous about posting it.
04:49I was nervous about purchasing it.
04:50We drove, we met, we geeked out for 30 minutes just talking about it.
04:54I even put a seatbelt on it in the car. It was a big moment.
04:57I'd like to consider myself as a serious collector.
05:00And you just go, you have to have some pieces in there that are just museum worthy or showpieces.
05:05And I just, I'd love to get the original 12 backs.
05:07I'm lucky enough to have five and they're all AFA graded.
05:17For me, it's the nostalgia.
05:19Trying to find a 40 year old toy still in a box.
05:22It's a great feeling.
05:27Whether you're looking for singles, boxes or card accessories,
05:36Sports Card World has had you covered for over 30 years.
05:40Come in and speak with their knowledgeable team about all things cards and collectibles.
05:53When you think about the biggest movie franchises of all time,
05:55you can't get much bigger than Star Wars,
05:57which has produced some of the most iconic movie characters ever.
06:00This included the neurotic droid C-3PO,
06:02who was played by Anthony Daniels in all nine movies.
06:05After filming, Daniels held onto a lot of the costumes for his own private collection.
06:09One such item he retained was a C-3PO headpiece,
06:12which was used during the filming of Return of the Jedi.
06:15This item went up for auction in March 2024 and sold for a staggering $1.3 million.
06:20For more record sales or to see the value of your collectibles,

06:35Today we're at a trade day,
06:36where the card collecting community comes together from all over
06:39to meet like-minded collectors, swap cards and meet their idols.
06:49I collect NBA and NFL and have recently started getting into Formula One.
06:54I collect mainly Taylor Walker cards.
06:56I collect Pokemon, yeah, Pokemon cards.
06:58I collect NBA rookies.
07:00I collect AFL and Star Wars.
07:06Trade day is very important because then you can move your cards that you collect
07:09and if you're chasing something for your set or just the common card or whatever,
07:14then people here can help you out.
07:16Very important for the community to liaise with others and see the new faces.
07:21Meeting new people, seeing their cards, seeing what they have to offer and also selling.
07:26You've got adults collecting like myself with their kids,
07:29bringing their kids down, getting them started young.
07:31You know, some people retire on the cards they've got.
07:39And what did you come here today hoping to get?
07:41I've got a few cards to sell and buy cards.
07:45I'd like to take Phil Ottobinder, basically.
07:48I collect mainly Anthony Edwards, so I'm off to his rookie RPA.
07:52It's been a trading day.
07:54I was trying to trade a specific card that I got from America when I was over there.
07:59So, yeah, I swapped that.
08:00Back when I started it was like, you know, your $20, $30 things,
08:03but now it's into the thousands and million dollar cards are out there.
08:07How much money have you invested?
08:08Oh, I'd be up with the $200,000.
08:11That's a lot of money.
08:12Tell us, did you think it would get that big so quick?
08:15No, no, not at all.
08:17No, we thought it'd just be a weekend thing, maybe, you know, $300, $400.
08:21We do try and sell more than the trade because the trade value is a lot higher than the sale value as well.
08:27So, and obviously we're trying to recoup some of that $200,000.
08:30So, money talks, yeah.
08:38I was a free card collector back when I was a young tacker.
08:41So, yeah, to be down here at Sports Card World today was pretty crazy.
08:45I didn't quite fathom how big the card collecting world is.
08:48Yeah, me and my older brother, we used to love collecting cards.
08:51So, it's cool to see what's going on now.
08:53It's a way to feel a part of the sport without playing it.
08:56To be able to collect cards and come down and talk about the game and talk about the sport.
09:00It's pretty surreal.
09:01Like, I didn't ever think I would sign my own card.
09:03So, to have a card, I'm very happy about.
09:10I think I was probably in my third or fourth year of playing and someone came up to me with a card and I thought, you know, gee whiz, this is actually a card to me.
09:19So, I can't really quite believe how many cards there actually are.
09:22It's humbling and a bit rattling, to be honest.
09:25My player sponsor, they actually bought a whole box for me.
09:28They bought every single one of my cards, so I've got them all at home.
09:31A friend of mine collects them, so he's gifted me a few.
09:34So, I don't quite have all of them, but one day I'll have to get all of them just to be able to sit back and reminisce.
09:40It's not just adults here today. The next generation of collectors is out in force as well, learning the hobby and the business.
09:53It's like collecting it because it's fun and it gives me something to do.
09:57When I first started collecting, I packed a gold card and I just started collecting from then.
10:03My favourite club's Man City, but Neymar doesn't play for, but I just really like Neymar, I guess.
10:08He's my favourite player, just the favourite card I want.
10:11I want, like, some of these cards and then I got a table which I sell cards from.
10:19And I sell on some Facebook groups, Instagram, but I love to do it here.
10:24Well, recently I've sold about $15,000 to one person worth of cards, so that was probably my biggest deal.
10:31Wow. How big is your collection?
10:3380 grand.
10:36And how old are you?
10:3815.
10:39That's a lot of money for a 15-year-old. Do you ever sit back and think about this?
10:44Yeah, a lot. If you're looking for, you know, a card that you want, if it's expensive, then you're going to have to pay the money, you know?
10:5415.
10:55After the break, Oscar-worthy movie memorabilia.
11:09And a card collector who chose Shea over Luca.
11:15Which screen-used movie prop sold for over $50 million in 2024?
11:22A. Marilyn Monroe's dress.
11:24B. James Bond's Aston Martin.
11:27C. Dorothy's ruby slippers.
11:30Or D. Luke Skywalker's lightsaber.
11:33Find out after the break.
11:34Welcome back. Did you select the right answer? Let's find out.
11:48Movies have a way of capturing our hearts, whether they spark nostalgia or strike a personal chord.
11:59But for Rod Adamo, that passion goes far beyond.
12:03My house is affectionately known as the Marvel Museum amongst friends.
12:16I collect anything from action figures, Funko Pops, movie props and replicas, movie posters, comic books, statues.
12:25Got a lot of statues.
12:26But the one thing that I really love is movie and TV memorabilia.
12:31With movies, I just love that they make you feel something.
12:37If I can have a physical, tangible thing, it's a little different to what's on the TV.
12:42Recently, I've gotten into signed helmets.
12:45Anthony Daniels, C-3PO himself.
12:48All nine films and some TV series, he's signed across the front.
12:52Temuera Morrison, a Boba Fett helmet.
12:55One of the best pieces in my collection, the Robert Downey Jr.
13:00Iron Man helmet.
13:03Sign that right across the faceplate.
13:05Not many of these actually exist.
13:10I have a Pulp Fiction Funko Pop that I was very, very fortunate enough to get signed by Quentin Tarantino.
13:16He gets out of the car. It was raining. They had umbrellas.
13:19And I hold this pop out. It's Jimmy, his character from Pulp Fiction.
13:22He gave me a thumbs up. Oh, I don't see this very often and signed it. I couldn't believe it.
13:302017, Sony went on a hunt for Australia's biggest Spider-Man fan.
13:35And I thought it's going to be one of those 25 words or less things.
13:38And it was. My answer was two words. Google me.
13:41And that was all I wrote. And they Googled me and they saw the collection.
13:47I was asked to host the premiere in Australia of Spider-Man Homecoming.
13:51And then they brought out this giant framed movie one sheet that was signed by the entire Spider-Man cast from Tom Holland down.
13:57I was speechless and it hangs with pride in my living room.
14:00I've got a Rocky signed glove. It's signed by Sylvester Stallone. Rocky and the Rocky franchise is huge for me.
14:10I grew up in a very low income situation. My dad and mum worked very hard.
14:14So I love the story of the underdog made good. And Rocky is the ultimate underdog made good.
14:22My most cherished piece in my collection is my X-Men comics signed by Stan Lee.
14:27And it's personalised to Rod.
14:29I was in a comic forum and I was just typing away, gushing about Stan Lee.
14:34Talking about how he has had such an impact on my life.
14:38Stan Lee's manager reads it. He sends me a DM on this forum and he says,
14:42Can I Skype you? And I'm like, Sure, here's my number.
14:45So it starts ringing, the old Skype. Do, do, do.
14:48And the screen pops open and it's Stan Lee's face.
14:51And he's like, Hello, I'm Stan. And I was like.
14:54And we had this 10, 15 minute convo and he ended it by saying,
14:58Your story's moved me. I love hearing that. Thank you so much.
15:01If you're ever in LA, come and see me. You can come to the house, hang out.
15:05We decided to plan our honeymoon around that trip.
15:08We got to hang out with Stan. We met all of his family.
15:10I took this one comic. I didn't want to be greedy.
15:13I took one solitary book that meant the most to me.
15:15We got to hang out, meet each other three, four more times.
15:18Brings me the most joy. It's the best memory.
15:24When I was a kid, a movie that I always had on repeat
15:27and I learned off by heart with my brothers and my sister
15:30was G.I. Joe, the animated movie.
15:32Now I've got a room full of G.I. Joe's from the 80s and 90s
15:36that I grew up with.
15:42When we're talking toys, this right here, the USS Flag,
15:45is my ultimate toy, my favourite, the biggest, the best,
15:50the hardest to get. It ticks every box.
15:52One day, lo and behold, I'm in a toy group
15:54and one becomes available. It was 100% complete.
15:58Not only that, it also came with the original box.
16:02The USS Flag is not just the holy grail of G.I. Joe toys,
16:07but the holy grail of all toys, probably of all time.
16:13It's the largest playset ever made.
16:16It's the most expensive at the time and aftermarket now,
16:20the most expensive playset that you can own.
16:28To my knowledge, there's a few shells
16:30and a few half-built ones around Australia.
16:33I don't know of anyone else that's got one 100% complete,
16:36to be honest.
16:37Who remembers Movie Trading Cards?
16:54Movie Trading Cards were the ultimate collectible in the 80s and 90s.
16:58Sets based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Back to the Future,
17:01Back to the Future and Jurassic Park
17:03let fans relive their favourite films in cardboard form.
17:10Stickers, holograms and gum-stained backs
17:12made these packs a must-have at corner stores everywhere.
17:16I remember going to my local deli or newsagent,
17:19buying these packs, firstly for the chewing gum
17:22and then trying to collect the full set.
17:24My favourites were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
17:26and Back to the Future.
17:28Head to our socials and tell us what you remember
17:31about Movie Trading Cards.
17:39Some of the biggest jumps in card values over the past 30 years
17:42have come from superstar players whose early cards
17:45were once surprisingly affordable.
17:48When their careers take off, so do their prices.
17:51And those who got in early reap the rewards.
17:55Spotting that potential isn't easy,
17:57but Luke Brenton nailed it
17:59when he started collecting Shea Gilgis Alexander
18:02well before the rest of the world caught on
18:05to how good he would be.
18:13I started collecting Shea back in 2019.
18:15I hit this card in a break.
18:17It was just that card itself.
18:19It sort of got me hooked a little bit
18:21and I started sort of seeing him play a little bit more,
18:24saw more potential and just thought,
18:26yeah, I'm going to stick with this guy.
18:28He's going to be my PC.
18:34Here's some of my Shea key rookie cards
18:36that I've got in my collection.
18:38Starting on some of the sets like Mosaic, Prism, Optic, Autos, RPAs,
18:47one-on-ones, short prints and a whole range of other ones.
18:51It's so much easier to pick up Shea cards
18:53back in those early days
18:54because Luca was the main focus.
18:56So Autos from like $100,
18:59which Luca cards back then
19:01you're probably talking like $1,000 or more.
19:03It made it quite easy for me to actually
19:05build a collection of Shea.
19:07I don't normally make too many good decisions like that.
19:09So it's definitely worked out in my favour
19:11picking Shea over Luca.
19:17Donruss Optic blue to 49.
19:19I like that card because of the eye appeal
19:21and it's a colour match to his jersey.
19:23The blue of the Optic just beams and it stands out so much
19:27and I just love the clean look of that Optic card.
19:30I know Shea has 7,000 cards in total
19:32so for me that's why I've focused in on his rookie cards.
19:36To know it's a Shea rookie card,
19:38all his stuff generally in his slippers uniform
19:41are his rookie cards.
19:42The Court Kings Jade Apparent Auto,
19:48that was my first auto of Shea
19:50that I actually pulled out of a pack.
19:52That's why that one is just unreal to me
19:54and to actually get it great and come back at 9.
19:56I think there's only a pop 4.
19:58Super short print, really hard to find.
20:03Picking cards that are serial numbered
20:05I feel like has more potential for growth
20:07because they are short printed, they are numbered.
20:10The Opulence RPA, that's out of 79.
20:13That card just has such eye appeal
20:15like the gold shimmer on the card.
20:17The patch, I think it's one of his letters off the jersey.
20:21On card auto, that's what I love about that card.
20:24I love the cards for their art form as well
20:27and that's the main reason I even collect cards
20:29is because it is like an art.
20:31I look at it as artwork.
20:33Crown Royale rookie jersey auto, that one's out of 25.
20:45It's what they class as his prime patch.
20:48That card just is unreal to me.
20:50Like a patch auto out of 25.
20:52I just love that card.
20:57So I've been collecting back in 2019,
20:59watching Shay's cards slowly grow over the years
21:01and then the last two years,
21:03his cards have just blown up big time.
21:06One for instance, say Prism Auto, which is PSA 10.
21:10I think paid $400 for it, which is now over 2,000 Australian.
21:15I do tell my friends that I collect cardboard,
21:18which they laugh at me and just go,
21:20what are you doing?
21:21Like, it's just, that's child's or, you know, kid's stuff.
21:25Like, why are you collecting cards?
21:27Like, they're not worth anything, are they?
21:29And I'm like, well, actually, you'd be quite surprised.
21:32Like, some of these are actually quite valuable.
21:41My favourite card is the absolute memorabilia
21:44Rookie Threads Level 5 patch, one-on-ones.
21:50To have a card that's so special that no one else has,
21:54it's just holds a special place to me.
21:57Finding it on eBay, just popping up,
21:59because I'm always looking, like,
22:00newest cards that pop up.
22:01And seeing a one-on-one sitting there,
22:03it was $200, I think, at the time.
22:06And to buy that for that price is just,
22:10I just was a no-brainer.
22:11I was like, I need this for my collection.
22:14I think he's got MVP potential,
22:17definitely could win a championship as well,
22:19so that it could be potentially a better investment
22:22than if I was investing in, say, Bitcoin or something,
22:24because I just know the market, I understand it.
22:27Next time on Cards & Collectibles, we get a look at some of the earlier examples of Australian trading cards.
22:42How this master set collector turned his passion into a thriving business.
22:52And an epic Nintendo collection with rare consoles, games and more.
