00:01Let's dive into the story of Tarek Skubal, a pitcher whose humility shines as brightly as his
00:06awards. Tarek Skubal tends to shy away from discussing his personal achievements, even after
00:11winning consecutive ALSI Young Awards, during a conference call with reporters on Wednesday
00:16evening. As he reflected on his progress and the significance of earning his second award,
00:21he made a statement that resonated powerfully. It's not an individual sport, it's a team sport,
00:26and as a team, I just want to win, Skubal expressed. That's kind of where I'm at, however I can help
00:33our team win, that's what I'm gonna do, that's kind of how I approach things, and I look forward
00:37to getting down to Lakeland Flaw in spring training and doing this thing, you know all over again next
00:42year. This sentiment would surely be welcomed by Tigers fans, however, the prospect of next season
00:47is currently uncertain, as Skubal celebrated the awards announcement with friends and family in
00:52Las Vegas, where he is set to participate in the MLB awards on Thursday night. MLB's general managers
00:58were wrapping up their annual meetings down the street. Skubal has been a significant topic of
01:03discussion, not solely due to his recent award. As Skubal approaches what could be his last season
01:09before entering free agency, speculation regarding a potential trade is beginning to surface. The Detroit
01:15Tigers, who may have one more year of control over Skubal, are handling inquiries about his future with
01:21caution, much like batters facing a challenging fastball from him. Tarek is a Detroit Tiger,
01:26stated general manager Jeff Greenberg to reporters earlier on Wednesday. We recognize his talent and
01:32the impact he has had on this organization, particularly over the past couple of years.
01:37We will not discuss our players in terms of trades or contract extensions. This perspective aligns
01:43with what Tigers president of baseball operations, Scott Harris, expressed when he was questioned
01:48about Skubal's situation during last month's end-of-season press conference. I believe this
01:52approach is fair to Tarek and fair to the Tigers. Greenberg added. He's a Tiger, and we are truly
01:58pleased to have him on our team. We hope he will secure his second Cy Young award in just a few hours.
02:03That's all there is to say. The Tigers have not confirmed whether they will entertain trade offers
02:08for Skubal, nor have they disclosed if any teams have shown interest in the back-to-back Cy Young winner.
02:14This stance differs from that of other teams. For instance, Pirates general manager Ben
02:19Charrington stated on Tuesday that Paul Skeens will remain with the Pirates next season.
02:24Despite ongoing trade rumors, Skeens, who recently received the National League Cy Young award,
02:29is in a different position, as he has four years of team control remaining before reaching free agency.
02:35In contrast, Skubal finds himself at a pivotal moment, facing an impending contract year while also
02:41being among the elite players in the league. This unique situation could make him one of the
02:46most sought-after players in the upcoming winter market. While this scenario places Skubal in a
02:51distinctive position, it also presents a significant decision point for the Tigers. Unless they can
02:57persuade Skubal away from potential free agency with a long-term extension, a difficult proposition just
03:04a year out, they'll have to decide whether to trade him now or hold on to him for next season,
03:09at least until the trade deadline, and make one more try at a playoff run, if they decide to keep him
03:15through next season, and he ultimately signs with another team as a free agent. After turning down
03:20a qualifying offer, the Tigers would receive a compensation pick in the 2027 draft.
03:25Skubal's involvement in trade discussions is not a new occurrence. He experienced similar
03:29speculation during the summer of 2022, when then-general manager Al Avila sought to enhance
03:34the roster of a struggling team. However, Skubal's season was cut short due to a left forearm strain
03:41that required flexor tendon surgery, keeping him out of action for nearly a year. The trade rumors
03:46resurfaced in the summer of 2024, as the Tigers shifted to a selling strategy, but in both instances,
03:52no deals materialized. While Skubal has chosen not to publicly address his contract situation,
03:58he did share his thoughts on managing the trade rumors, when asked. His past experiences have
04:04contributed to his ability to maintain focus. On Wednesday, Skubal reflected on his situation
04:10stating, I believe much of it resembles how things unfolded in 2022, a significant portion of it is
04:16beyond my control, particularly regarding trades. While contract extensions are somewhat different,
04:22trades are not something I can influence, I have dedicated myself fully to this organization,
04:26and my desire is to remain a Tiger for many years. However, the business aspects of the game are
04:32simply different. I don't have the ability to dictate my own contracts, so I will continue to
04:37focus on my performance and not get caught up in those matters. I have witnessed how these situations
04:42unfold. They will not affect my daily routine or my approach to the off-season, as I strive to become
04:48the best version of myself for spring training next year. Ultimately, it is out of my hands.
04:53Nevertheless, my love for the city of Detroit remains unchanged. I hope to continue my journey here.
05:00So what do you think the future holds for this talented Tiger?
