00:04The coaching staff for the Tigers in the upcoming season will reflect a stronger influence from the Orioles.
00:09On Wednesday the team revealed the coaching lineup for 2026, which includes former coaches from Baltimore, Anthony Sanders, and Cody Ashe, along with several new hires and promotions within the front office.
00:22Anthony Sanders, who has served as the first base coach for the Orioles for the last six seasons, will assume the same position with the Tigers.
00:30Before his time with Baltimore, Sanders, a former outfielder for the Blue Jays and Mariners, gained experience in outfield coaching as he worked as the outfield and base running coordinator for the Rockies.
00:41At 51 years old, he takes over from Anthony Iaposi, who held the first base coach position for the previous two seasons in Detroit.
00:49Cody Ashe, who was the assistant hitting coach for the Orioles last season, after spending two years as the team's offensive strategy coach, will join the Tigers as the assistant hitting coach, working alongside Michael Berdar, Ashe, 35, has played parts of five seasons in Major League Baseball, as both a third baseman and an outfielder.
01:12The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox have seen a change in their coaching staff, with a new appointment to replace Keith Beauregard.
01:20At the conclusion of the season, both coaches were considered, during the Baltimore Orioles' search for a new manager, which ultimately resulted in the hiring of Craig Albernaz, a former catcher for Double A Erie, and a coach with the Guardians, Sanders and Ashe were brought on board in Baltimore, under the management of Brandon Hyde, who was let go from his position as Orioles' manager in May.
01:41In addition, the Detroit Tigers have elevated Billy Boyer to the role of Major League Quality Coach.
01:47Boyer previously served as, the minor league field coordinator, and infield coordinator within the Tigers' farm system during the past season.
01:55He takes over from Gary Jones, who held various positions on manager A.J. Hinch's staff, for four seasons.
02:02The remainder of the coaching staff will stay the same, including pitching coach Chris Fetter, assistants Robin Lund and Juan Nieves, third base coach Joey Cora, bench coach George Lombard, assistant hitting coach Lance Zawadsky and catching coach Ryan Sienko.
02:17These adjustments marked the first changes to the Tigers' coaching staff since prior to the 2024 season.
02:23A series of changes in the front office has also been announced.
02:26Alex Smith has been appointed to a newly established role as vice president of baseball strategy.
02:31In this position, he will be responsible for overseeing baseball strategy, professional scouting, acquisitions, and advanced scouting.
02:38In this position, Smith brings with him 11 years of experience with the Cubs, where he held various roles both on and off the field.
02:44His previous positions included baseball operations coordinator, assistant director of Major League Data and Development, and most recently, Major League strategy coach during his time with the Cubs.
02:55He collaborated with Scott Harris, the current president of baseball operations for the Tigers, and general manager Jeff Greenberg.
03:02Dr. Georgia Giblin has been elevated from her role as vice president of baseball performance science to vice president of health and performance.
03:11This promotion reflects a broader strategy aimed at enhancing player health and development.
03:16Giblin has been part of the Tigers organization for five years, initially joining as a post-doctorate fellow through the University of Michigan.
03:24Additionally, Brad Chiolik has been appointed as the director of international scouting after previously working in the field.
03:31For the past two years, the Nationals have had a senior director of amateur scouting, Tom Moore, who has served as the Tigers director of international operations,
03:40will transition into a senior advisor position for his 21st season with the organization, where he will manage the construction of the Tigers Dominican Academy.
03:49Theo Hooper has been appointed as the assistant director of amateur scouting after spending four years as a staff assistant in the Major League for the Rangers.
03:57Christian Hook has been elevated to the role of director of pitching evaluation, marking his fifth year with the organization.
