00:00Welcome to a story of intensity and silence that speaks volumes.
00:05As Tarek Skubal made his way from the left field bullpen at T-Mobile Park just before
00:10the decisive Game 5 of the ALDS, he resembled a heavyweight boxer preparing for a championship
00:15fight.
00:16His demeanor was intense, and he was accompanied by a group that included his battery mate
00:20Dylan Dingler, which added to the dramatic atmosphere.
00:24However, unlike the enthusiastic receptions he typically receives at Comerica Park, Skubal's
00:29entrance into the visitors' dugout was met with a more subdued response.
00:34While fans at home games erupt in applause for their Cy Young winner when he emerges from
00:39the bullpen, the Seattle crowd was too engrossed in welcoming their own starting pitcher to
00:43acknowledge Skubal.
00:45This lack of attention did not bother him, he was confident that he would soon command
00:49their focus.
00:50After the Tigers' season concluded with a narrow 3-2 defeat to Seattle in 15 innings, Spencer
00:56Torkelson expressed his unwavering belief in Skubal.
00:59He stated, there was never a doubt he was going to come through when the lights were
01:03brightest.
01:04Skub's the man.
01:06He's our guy, and he was our guy, too.
01:08During the night, we narrowly missed our goal.
01:19Starting with his strikeout of Victor Robles for the final out of the second inning, and
01:23concluding with his strikeout of Eugenio Suarez in the fourth, Detroit's ace achieved an impressive
01:28feat by striking out seven consecutive Mariners, setting a new postseason record for the most
01:33consecutive strikeouts in a single game.
01:35Prior to this, eight pitchers had managed to record six straight strikeouts in a playoff
01:40game, with the latest being Blue Jays rookie Trey Yesovich during Game 2 of the ALDS against
01:45the Yankees on Sunday.
01:47On that Friday night, Skubal's four-seam fastball was as effective as his changeup was lethal,
01:51and he skillfully utilized both pitches in tandem throughout his streak.
01:56The fastball, which was in the high 80s, and the changeup, which reached triple digits,
02:00appeared almost identical as they left Skubal's hand.
02:04This deceptive combination caused many skilled Seattle hitters to swing and miss at pitches
02:08that were well out of their reach.
02:10Notably, Skubal became the first pitcher in postseason history to record over 10 strikeouts
02:16without issuing any walks in the first four innings of a game.
02:19He accumulated a total of 56 strikeouts in his initial outings.
02:23Tarek Skubal has now recorded six career postseason appearances, a figure that ranks just behind
02:28Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, who holds the record with 57.
02:32Detroit's manager, A.J. Hinch, praised Skubal's performance, stating,
02:37He was incredible.
02:38He kick-started this in such a good direction.
02:41He missed a ton of bats.
02:42If you're not a fan of the Tigers and you haven't seen Tarek start repeatedly,
02:46you'll understand why he receives so much admiration.
02:49He's truly remarkable.
02:51During this impressive streak, all seven strikeouts were swinging, with four of them resulting from
02:56his changeup, Randy Orozarena, who had a career batting average of 6-for-21 against Skubal,
03:02stepped up to the plate in the third inning.
03:03He began by taking a changeup for a ball, followed by two fastballs that were called strikes,
03:10and then he fouled off a third pitch, leaving him with a 1-2 count.
03:14In response to this standoff, Skubal delivered a blazing 100.1 mph fastball that broke Orozarena's
03:22bat at the handle. Orozarena then picked up a new bat, but it would prove unnecessary,
03:27as he swung vigorously at the next pitch, which was a deceptive 88.9 mph changeup.
03:33As his helmet flew off his head and soared into the air, he managed to catch it with his free
03:37hand while making his way back to the dugout. He was one of the few Mariners who had something
03:42to take away from their encounter with Skubal. After nearly five hours of play, which began
03:46with Skubal's first pitch, the 28-year-old shifted the focus from himself to his teammates
03:51following Detroit's unfortunate turn of events in the bottom of the 15th inning.
03:55Manager Hinch remarked, he gave it his all, and it was clear he was emotional as he left
04:00the mound after the 6th inning. This reflects just how intense the game was. He put forth
04:05everything he had. Skubal's streak of strikeouts came to an end when Josh Naylor hit a line drive
04:10to center field to start the bottom of the 5th inning. However, this did not deter Detroit's
04:15base, who concluded six innings of allowing just one run by striking out Mariners' power
04:20hitter Cal Raleigh, with a fastball clocked at 100-paller.
04:26Namwaneem Nitrashe. According to MLB.com researcher Sarah Langs, this marked his fifth strikeout of
04:33over 100 Mechalers in this postseason, the highest number recorded. In the pitch-tracking era,
04:39which began in 2008, Skubal achieved a remarkable feat by recording the highest number of strikeouts
04:45by any starting pitcher in a single postseason. His 13th strikeout of the evening left the audience
04:51of 47,025 at T-Mobile Park in a state of silence, reminiscent of the quiet atmosphere when he first
04:58entered the field before the game. This silence can often convey more than words. He gave everything
05:04he had today, and he has done so throughout the entire season, remarked Dingler. That's the type
05:10of pitcher he is. Early on, they had some solid at-bats against him. If they hadn't increased
05:15his pitch count, he could have gone the full nine innings. He's incredible. I will always cherish
05:21this season and everything he achieved. What moment from this game will stay with you the longest?
