00:00From back-to-back Cy Young wins, to a dominant presence on the All-MLB First Team, Tarek Skubal
00:06is redefining pitching excellence. For the second year in a row, Tarek Skubal has been named to the
00:12All-MLB First Team, presented by MGM Rewards, securing one of the five starting pitcher
00:17positions. This recognition, which was revealed on Thursday, following Skubal's announcement as
00:23the AL Cy Young Award winner for the second consecutive year on Wednesday night, adds to
00:27the growing collection of accolades. For the left-handed pitcher from the Tigers, fans
00:32participated in the voting for the All-MLB Teams on MLB.com. After the regular season concluded,
00:38with the voting period ending on October 10th, voters were instructed to focus solely on
00:43regular season performance. When making their selections, the ballot featured 31 starting
00:48pitchers, from which fans were tasked with choosing five. Skubal is joined on the All-MLB Team by fellow
00:55AL Cy Young finalist Garrett Crochet, as well as Paul Skeens, Max Freed, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
01:02The second team includes Detroit native and AL Cy Young finalist Hunter Brown, along with Christopher
01:07Sanchez, Freddy Peralta, Zach Wheeler, and Brian Wu. For the second consecutive year, Skubal's 6.5
01:14BWAR led all AL pitchers. In the past year, Skubal ranked third among pitchers in the majors,
01:20trailing only Sanchez and Skeens. His impressive 2.21 ERA was the second best in the league,
01:26surpassed only by Skeens, and it was significantly lower than Brown's 2.43, which was the next closest.
01:32Skubal also boasted a remarkable strikeout-to-walk ratio of 7.3, the highest in Major League Baseball,
01:38and nearly two points better than Crochet's 5.54. Additionally, his whip, walks plus hits per innings
01:45pitched, of 8.91 was the best in the league. Equally significant, was Skubal's impact on the
01:50Tigers during his starts. The atmosphere, when Skubal, took the mound, was noticeably different
01:56for opposing teams. Although he recorded 13 wins, which did not lead the Tigers, Casey Mize had 14.
02:04Detroit had a strong record of 21-10 in games, started by Skubal during the regular season.
02:09In contrast, their record was 66-65 in games he did not start, including an 18-10 record in Mize's
02:17starts. Manager A.J. Hinch expressed his enthusiasm about Skubal's abilities, stating,
02:23Sitting in my chair, one of the easiest things to do, and one of the most exciting things to do,
02:28is hand the ball to the best pitcher in baseball. Prior to Game 5 of the AL Division Series,
02:33the Mariners expressed their confidence in Skubal, highlighting his significant role within the
02:39team. He is clearly someone who is highly trusted in our clubhouse, to bring intensity, deliver top-tier
02:45pitching, and achieve results, they stated. We experience victories and defeats together,
02:49but he is the one who guides us.
02:55This season, Skubal distinguished himself as one of only five pitchers in the American League to throw
03:01a shutout. His complete game performance against the Guardians on May 25 was particularly remarkable,
03:07as he allowed just two hits, issued no walks, and struck out 13 batters, notably, his final pitch
03:13of the game, a fastball clocked at 102.6 mid-ph, marked the fastest he has ever thrown.
03:20Throughout the regular season, Skubal managed to pitch seven or more scoreless innings,
03:24in nine of his 31 starts. During a four-start stretch, from May 25 to June 12,
03:30he surrendered only one run over 32-3 innings. Following that, he continued his impressive form,
03:35by throwing an additional 19 scoreless innings, from late June into July. Dylan Dingler, the gold
03:41glove catcher, praised Skubal's dedication, after the Tigers game five loss in the division series,
03:47stating,
03:48He gave everything he had all season. That's the type of pitcher he is. He's incredible. I'm sure this
03:54season will always stay in my memory. I will always remember what he achieved last year, but this year,
03:59I had the opportunity to experience it myself, by catching him. It was incredible. So,
04:05after a season like that, is Tarek Skubal now the most dominant pitcher in the game today?
