00:01Welcome to our discussion about Gleyber Torres and his pivotal qualifying offer from the Detroit
00:05Tigers. For the first time in over 10 years, the Tigers have issued a qualifying offer to
00:10one of their free agents. This offer has been made to second baseman Gleyber Torres,
00:15who is now faced with the decision of whether to accept a one-year contract with Detroit
00:19or explore the possibility of a multi-year contract on the open market.
00:24Torres has until November 18th to make his choice regarding the offer,
00:28which is valued at $22.25 million for one year. Should he choose to decline the offer,
00:36the Tigers still have the option to negotiate a new contract with him. However, if he decides to
00:41sign with another team, the Tigers would be entitled to a compensation pick in the upcoming MLB draft.
00:47This pick would be positioned late in the first round if Torres signs for more than $50 million,
00:52or at the end of the second round if his new contract is for a lesser amount.
00:55This situation marks the Tigers' first qualifying offer since they made similar offers to Max Scherzer
01:01and Victor Martinez in 2014. In that instance, Martinez turned down the offer but later re-signed
01:07with the Tigers on a four-year deal shortly thereafter. Scherzer, on the other hand, declined
01:12and went on to sign a seven-year contract with the Nationals, leading the Tigers to select
01:17outfielder Kristen Stewart with the compensation pick they received. In the previous summer,
01:21Torres signed a one-year contract worth $15 million with the Tigers in December,
01:27aiming for a resurgence that would restore his market value after a disappointing 2024 season
01:32with the Yankees. By most measures, he achieved that goal. His 2.9 WR significantly exceeded his
01:392024 figure of 1.8 and equaled his total from 2023. Torres had a remarkable first half of the season,
01:47which not only led to his first All-Star selection since 2019, but also marked the first time he
01:53started in the All-Star game. His performance made him a key player for a team that held the
01:58best record in Major League Baseball at the All-Star break. Although he struggled towards the end of the
02:02season due to a hernia injury that necessitated surgery afterward, he still posted impressive
02:07statistics, while Torres' batting average of 256 was slightly lower than his 2024 average,
02:13his 85 walks, ranking 4th among American League hitters, contributed to a career-high on-base
02:20percentage of .358. Additionally, he improved his slugging percentage to .387, resulting in a 108 OPS
02:28plus. His strikeout rate of 16.1% marked the second lowest figure in his career, and his average exit
02:35velocity was 90.0 mph, which is only slightly below his career-high of 90.1 mph achieved in 2022.
02:44The Tigers are rich in infield prospects who may make their Major League debuts next season,
02:49including three players ranked among their top nine prospects, Kevin McGonigal, their top prospect,
02:54and Max Anderson ranked ninth, are currently excelling in the Arizona Fall League. Additionally,
02:59Hao Yu Li, who is ranked sixth, is in contention for a position on the opening day roster for the
03:05upcoming season. Colt Keith, who transitioned from second base to first and then to third base,
03:11last season to accommodate Torres, is also part of this promising group. The Tigers appreciate the
03:17contributions Torres made to the team this season, and they also place a high value on draft picks.
03:22McGonigal was selected as a compensation pick late in the first round of the 2023 draft,
03:27coming in at 37th overall, do you think Torres should accept the qualifying offer or test the
03:33free agency market?
