00:00Welcome to our breakdown of the thrilling 2025 Cy Young Award race.
00:05As the 2025 season approached, Tarek Skubal of the Tigers and Paul Skeens of the Pirates
00:10emerged as the leading contenders for the Cy Young Award, consistently demonstrating
00:14their exceptional skills throughout the year. However, several other pitchers also made
00:19noteworthy cases for this prestigious accolade. Here is a ranking of every Cy Young Award
00:23season. American League, Hunter Brown, a right-handed pitcher for the Astros, had a standout
00:29season at the age of 27. Solidifying his role as a key player in Houston's pitching lineup,
00:37he made 31 starts, achieving a record of 12 wins and 9 losses, while posting an impressive
00:43earned run average, ERA, of 2.43 and a career-best whip of 1.03. Over the course of 185 and one-third
00:53innings, he struck out a personal best of 206 batters and allowed just 133 hits. Notably,
01:01he had 8 starts where he did not give up any earned runs. In terms of performance among American League
01:08starters, Brown excelled in several categories. He led in opponent's slugging percentage at 318,
01:14ranked 2nd in both ERA and opponent's OPS at 589, and was tied for 2nd in quality starts,
01:21with 21. Additionally, he placed 3rd in strikeouts, 4th in whip, and in strikeouts per 9 innings with
01:27an average of 10. His pitching WAR stood at 4.8, and he was 5th in opponent's batting average,
01:34allowing only 201. Brown also achieved the longest scoreless inning streak in the major leagues,
01:40saw Brown emerge as a standout pitcher, achieving a remarkable streak of 28 consecutive innings
01:46pitched without allowing a run from April 3rd to April 27th. This accomplishment ranks as the
01:525th longest single-season streak for a starting pitcher in the history of the Astros. In June,
01:58Brown's exceptional performance earned him the title of American League Pitcher of the Month.
02:02He recorded an impressive 1.19 ERA and a 0.82 whip over 30 and one-third innings,
02:10leading the Astros to victory in all five of his starts during that month.
02:15He kicked off the season with seven straight quality starts, marking the first time a pitcher
02:20has achieved this since Shane Bieber of the Guardians, who had eight consecutive quality
02:24starts at the beginning of the 2021 season. Overall, the Astros had a record of 18 wins and 13 losses
02:31in games that Brown started. Garrett Crochet, a left-handed pitcher for the Red Sox,
02:37also made a significant impact in his first season with the team. A key trait of a true ace is their
02:43availability. And Crochet excelled in this area by leading the American League with 205 and one-third
02:49innings pitched. He also topped the league with an impressive strikeout rate of 11.18 K9 and led all
02:55of Major League Baseball with a total of 255 strikeouts. Additionally, the tall left-hander
03:02ranked among the league leaders in several important statistics, including whip, where he placed fifth,
03:07and opponent's batting average, where he ranked eighth. Only scooball had a better performance in
03:12certain metrics. Crochet's KBB ratio surpasses 5.54, showcasing his effectiveness on the mound.
03:20The underlying statistics further highlight his impressive performance. Crochet achieved rankings
03:25in the 90th percentile or higher in several stat-cast metrics, including pitching run value,
03:3199th percentile, fastball run value, 95th percentile, breaking run value, 99th percentile,
03:38expected ERA, 91st percentile, and chase percentage, 90th percentile. He exemplified a player who not only
03:45initiated winning streaks but also helped prolong them, and, put an end to losing streaks.
03:51Throughout the season there were numerous standout performances from Crochet for instance,
03:55on June 1st, as his team sought to overcome a slump, he delivered an outstanding performance by
04:01striking out 12 batters and allowing just one run over seven innings, leading to a 3-1 victory in
04:07Atlanta. On July 12th, while contributing to his team's eventual 10-game winning streak,
04:12Crochet pitched a complete game in a 1-0 win against the Rays, recording no walks and striking
04:18out nine. In his last three regular season appearances against the Yankees, he maintained
04:24a 2.11 ERA, with three walks and an impressive 30 strikeouts over 21-13 innings. Tarek Skubal,
04:32a left-handed pitcher for the Tigers, did not secure the pitching triple crown this year.
04:37However, he excelled in several metrics compared to his Cy Young-winning performance from the
04:42previous season. His Boer of 6.5 surpassed last year's figure of 6.4 and was higher than those
04:48of fellow finalists Crochet on 6.3 and Brown, 6.1. Skubal achieved an impressive 2.21 ERA,
04:57which was nearly a quarter of a run lower than Brown's 2.43, and his FIP of 2.45 significantly
05:03outperformed Crochet's 2.89. Additionally, Skubal's strikeout-to-walk ratio of 7.3 was almost
05:11two points better than Crochet's 5.54. With an ERA pie of 187, Skubal recorded the best performance
05:19by an American League pitcher since Justin Verlander in 2022. His dominance was not only
05:24evident over the entire season, but also during specific stretches. Among the five AL pitchers who
05:30threw a shutout this season, Skubal's complete game performance against the Guardians on May 25
05:34stood out as a remarkable achievement, featuring no walks and 13 strikeouts. Notably, his final pitch
05:40of the game was a fastball clocked at 102.6 mpH, marking the hardest pitch of his career,
05:46and it resulted in a strikeout. Throughout the season, Skubal delivered seven or more scoreless
05:53innings in nine different games. In his 31 regular season appearances, he allowed just one run over a
06:00span of 30 and two-thirds innings during a four-game stretch from May 25 to June 12. Following that,
06:06he continued his impressive performance by throwing an additional 19 scoreless innings from late June
06:11into July. When it comes to his pitching abilities, Skubal excelled compared to his peers. His changeup was
06:18particularly effective, boasting a run value of plus 125, a whiff rate of 46, 8%, and an impressive
06:26.154 batting average against. Additionally, his four-seam fastball ranked as the 10th best among
06:32American League pitchers, with a run value of plus 112. In total, Skubal achieved a remarkable run value
06:38of plus 151, which was the highest in Major League Baseball, surpassing both Skeens and Yamamoto,
06:45who each had a run value of plus 142. No other pitcher exceeded a run value of plus 140.
06:52In the National League, Christopher Sanchez, a left-handed pitcher for the Phillies,
06:57emerged as a key player. The team faced a significant setback in August when Zach Wheeler
07:03was diagnosed with a season-ending blood clot near his right shoulder, necessitating surgery.
07:08Fortunately, the Phillies were well-equipped to cope with this loss. Thanks to Sanchez's development
07:13into one of the league's top pitchers, he finished the season with a record of 13 wins and 5 losses,
07:19along with a 2.50 ERA over 32 starts. This season, he achieved a career-high of 212 strikeouts while
07:27allowing 44 walks over a career-high 202 innings pitched. He topped Major League Baseball with an
07:348.0 BWR and secured the second position in the National League with a 6.4 FWAR.
07:41Sanchez is particularly exciting to watch when his changeup is effective. Batters managed to hit only
07:46.1 to 70 against this pitch, placing him 11th among 96 pitchers who threw at least 250 changeups.
07:52Additionally, opponents missed 45.1% of the time when swinging at it, ranking him second only to
07:58scooball among those with a minimum of 250 swings on changeups. Sanchez led all of baseball with 130
08:05strikeouts generated from his changeup. No other pitcher in the league recorded more strikeouts
08:10with a single, off-speed or breaking pitch than Sanchez did with his changeup.
08:16Todd Zielecki, Paul Skeens, RHP, Pirates. If one can overlook Skeens' 10-10 win-loss record,
08:24largely due to his offense providing only 11 runs of support in those 10 losses.
08:29His performance speaks volumes. He posted an impressive 1.97 ERA, which was more than half
08:35a run lower than that of his nearest competitor in the National League. Furthermore, his 0.95 whip
08:40was the best in the league. The league statistics highlight his impressive performance, including a
08:45fielding independent pitching, FIP of 2.36, an ERA plus of 2.17, and an average of 0.5 home runs
08:53allowed per 9 innings, along with a win probability added, WPA of 5.1. He recorded 216 strikeouts,
09:02setting a record for the most by a right-handed pitcher for the Pirates, and tying for the second
09:06highest in the league. Additionally, he ranked among the top 5 in the National League for hits
09:12allowed per 9 innings, walks allowed per 9 innings, and total innings pitched. This combination of
09:18advanced analytics and traditional statistics suggests that he may be one of the most dominant
09:22pitchers in baseball history. Could Skeens have had the best season ever for a Pirates pitcher?
09:28And if you're looking for more than just numbers, consider the level of excitement surrounding his
09:32starts this season. Who else was a contender to start in the All-Star game? He entered the season
09:37as a frontrunner for the award, maintaining that leading position throughout, last year, as a rookie,
09:42Skeens finished third in the Cy Young voting, boasting similar rate statistics, but with 54 and
09:48two-thirds fewer innings pitched, if the volume of innings pitched was the only thing that kept him
09:53from winning the award. Last year. Suggests that he is likely to receive some recognition this time,
10:00Alex Stumpf, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, right-handed pitcher, Dodgers. It comes as no surprise that Yamamoto has
10:07established himself as one of the premier pitchers in baseball, especially considering the Dodgers'
10:11decision to sign him to a groundbreaking 12-year, $325 million contract, the highest amount ever
10:18given to a pitcher in MLB history, before he had even made his Major League debut. However,
10:23even his team was taken aback by the significant progress he demonstrated during his second season
10:28in the majors, with a 2.49 ERA Yamamoto ranked second in the National League, trailing only Skeens.
10:34He also led all qualified Major League pitchers with a 183-opponent batting average and achieved
10:41over 200 strikeouts for the first time in his career. While statistics provide some insight,
10:47they do not fully capture his importance to the Dodgers, particularly as the team's rotation
10:52faced numerous injuries early in the season. Yamamoto was the only member of the rotation to make
10:57every start, stepping up to become the ace of the staff. It is important to note that the voting for
11:02the BBWAA awards occurs prior to the start of the postseason. Therefore, Yamamoto's remarkable
11:08performance in the World Series, which earned him the MVP title, is not factored into the Cy Young
11:14voting. However, his ability to lead his team through the series with his pitching exemplifies the high
11:19expectations the Dodgers had for him during the regular season. Yamamoto is aiming to become the
11:24first Cy Young winner for the Dodgers, since Clayton Kershaw won his third award in 2014.
11:30He is rightly included in the discussion for this prestigious honor, and is likely to remain a
11:35contender for many years ahead. So, which of these phenomenal pitchers do you think left the most
11:40lasting impression this season? One day then these and second starts.
11:44Debbie Key
11:49has made a official title since the year ago.
