00:00we got so many trades to get to in baseball and i don't even know that we have enough time to do it
00:04but we'll try to get to our best here let's start off with the biggest name i think it's fair to say
00:08moved on trade deadline day may not be the best player but the biggest name that's carlos correa
00:13world series champion of course with the houston astros and then went on to play for the minnesota
00:17twins waived his no trade clause to go back and play third base for the houston astros as the
00:24twins were sellers and houston was buyers so they make this deal now jeremy pena their shortstop is
00:29going to stay at short correa will fill the void that was left this off season by alex bregman and
00:36then of course isak paredes their third baseman is hurt so correa will play every day at third here's
00:41how the deal went down according to their general manager dana brown the big energy boost for us
00:46right now you know particularly coming off a few losses at during our homestand you know we got
00:54those last two games which we felt really good about but now you you know you get the you know
01:00trade deadline with the day off you get to hit reset and you know you you know you have career coming
01:06back to the city you have him stepping into that locker room a lot of familiar faces close-knit guys
01:13like family members uh he brings energy every day to the ballpark and so this is a big move for the team
01:21for the city for where we're going in the future and we feel like we added this guy and he's just
01:28going to bring a lot not only as a player but as a human being you know and his leadership skills and
01:34the energy that he's going to bring to this club so i'm fired up because i've only known him you know
01:40as an opponent and i remember when i was with the braves we played against you guys and i'm just dying
01:45to meet this guy and i've heard so many great things about him and i've seen his actions on the
01:52field uh he brings it every day and correa expected to be in the starting lineup this weekend for the
01:58astros meanwhile the padres very active once again on trade deadline day they uh end up making arguably
02:06the biggest deal of the day by getting uh the great reliever mason miller from the sacramento a's
02:12they also got ryan hearn and outfielder ramon laureano from the orioles the rangers did late
02:19trade for diamondback starter merrill kelly who's having a nice year 3.22 earned run average zach
02:25gallon on arizona state put and the yankees ended up adding camilo doval david bednar and jake bird to
02:32bolster their bullpen first let's start off with aj preller on the flurry of trades that he made
02:38at the deadline yeah i think as a group you know over the last few weeks we talked about
02:43you know having a few needs with the big league team um you know probably adding adding a couple
02:48of bats uh you know addressing left field and the bench um you know looking at the catching spot
02:55and seeing if there's a possibility to change the mix a little bit there um you know and then um you
03:02know potentially looking at the rotation whether from a depth standpoint obviously getting michael king
03:06hopefully back soon and you coming back and pitching has been a big boost but adding some
03:11depth to the rotation and then you know potentially adding some impact as well to the mound which you
03:16know kind of goes back into that you know you can never have enough arms and never enough impact arms so
03:20that was kind of the uh the uh the wish list over the last few weeks and i think we've taken a team
03:26that uh that's i think you know in position to to play in the playoffs and a very good team and
03:31hopefully rounded it out and given given shilti and the coaching staff an opportunity to do their thing
03:36and the yankees add bullpen pieces as i mentioned looks like camilo doval will now be part of the
03:42ninth inning equation joining devin williams in new york here's general manager brian cashman on their
03:47moves we've improved the team uh we believe um you know we tried to address the areas of need and we
03:53you know um you know we we've added to the bullpen we've improved it uh the position player group as
04:01well given our manager more choices um you know to play matchup and uh you know so whether it's
04:08we're facing left-handed pitching he's got some choices to play with with some right-handed bats
04:13we've imported with rosario and slater um you know we have obviously a uh uh you know with jose
04:21caballero we got a a nice uh athletic infielder that he can you know that can defend and pinch run
04:30uh you know at a high level uh so that's a nice weapon of choice he's certainly got more
04:36arms to mix and match with out of the pen you know with uh with the new additions as well
04:41and obviously we solidified third base with ryan mcmahon so i think we've addressed a lot of areas
04:46of need to try to uh give us the best shot we can take other trades at the deadline the rays acquire a
04:54couple of pitchers they get adrian hauser and griffin jacks to bolster the rotation in the bullpen
04:59the cubs traded for twins utility man willie castro who has two home runs this season and the
05:05red sox were pretty quiet on deadline day but they do get dustin may from the dodgers to add to their
05:10pitching rotation and bullpen also charlie morton the ageless wonder his career rolls on now goes to
05:16the detroit tigers and he'll join the rotation led by tarix scuble and company the reds get miguel
05:22and duhar from the a's and the astros also made a second deal with the marlins by adding jesus
05:28sanchez to bolster their outfield group going into the postseason run the marlins by the way fairly
05:35quiet on deadline day some expectation that players would be traded including one pitcher sandy alcantara
05:40he was not dealt yesterday and will remain with the club as the person that's talking right now
05:46reported that yesterday here on sports grid all right now let's get to the action yesterday in
05:52major league baseball the yankees beat the rays seven to four long rain delay in this one by the way
05:56two hours 45 minutes ben rice john carlos stanton ended up homering and the yankees are on the road
06:02here in miami this week george kirby six shutout innings the mariners beat the rangers six to nothing
06:07crazy game by the way yesterday between the reds and braves both teams scored eight runs in the eighth
06:13inning it's the first time in history that's ever happened and 12 11 the final the braves end up winning
06:19that game all right now let's go to the national football league yes there was a preseason game to get
06:24to but that's not the top story of the nfl today it is terry mclaurin the wide receiver of the
06:28washington commanders who's had enough doesn't want a new contract with washington says he prefers a trade
06:34he's been looking for an extension for the past few months he did report to camp but it seems like
06:39nothing's getting done said yesterday he prefers to move on we'll see how washington ends up reacting to
06:45this naturally they're in no position to have to grant him a trade but we'll see if this ends up
06:50happening before the season begins or if mclaurin ends up playing with jaden daniels for another season
06:55same could be said for micah parsons in dallas his contract situation continues to roll on there's
07:01more reports this morning diana russini says that their relationship is basically over and the cowboys
07:07are not any closer to a new contract than they were several months ago and jerry jones prefers to
07:12deal with parsons himself as opposed to his agent needless to say none of this stuff is working well
07:17for jerry jones it's figured out before the season begins all right preseason began last night 34 to
07:22seven the final in case you missed it the chargers end up going wild on the detroit lions in game one
07:28you don't see 41 points scored in the first preseason game but trey lance who's now on the
07:33chargers had his way with the lions defense also mike tomlin said his relationship with quarterback
07:38aaron rogers is a bromance all right that's good news here on the show buffalo bills given the highest
07:43grade in the new uniform nfl report card and in the nba michael bridges got a contract extension with
07:50the new york knicks falls under the radar because again so much happening in baseball and football
07:54four years 150 million dollars gives the knicks some flexibility we're joined by pat evans of legal
08:00sports report pat's got a new gig by the way we'll be talking to you about next week here on the show
08:06and of course still going to make appearances for us and discuss the world of sports betting but for now
08:11let's uh say pat evans of legal sports report by the way everything cool with pat no drama or anything
08:16else like you know some like michael parsons or terry mclaurin and that's all not happening very
08:21amicable uh pat welcome back to the show i know you love fridays so we got some hot topics here to
08:26talk about let's start off in chicago we're seeing this flat sports betting fee and percentages being added
08:33all across the country a quarter 50 cents uh just depends on who you ask and the way things go in
08:39legislation things can change at any time so is chicago now going like a different direction as
08:44to what we thought previously i mean we'll have to wait and see but this is just potentially more
08:49bad news for sports books in illinois i mean if you've been following this and listening to this
08:55show when we're on from lsr i mean yeah a couple two years ago or i guess it was last year the illinois
09:02government went from a 15 flat rate sports betting tax to a tiered system from 20 to 40 percent based
09:09on how much revenue those sports books are doing well on top of that this year the budget included a
09:14new thing where you for the first 20 million bets from a sports book you get a 25 cent per bet tax for
09:22the sports books well that jumps to 50 cents per bet when you go over those 20 million bets so that's
09:29in itself all the sports books are pretty uh upset we've seen six now bet rivers just announced a
09:35one dollar minimum bet uh on top of hard rock is two dollars bet mgm's two dollars 50 cent minimum bets
09:41and then of course uh fan duel draft kings and fanatics all have a a per bet fee that's included in their
09:49sports book bets now like you just can't place a bet without paying that extra bet well now you've got
09:56the chicago city council saying hey that's not a bad idea maybe we can institute a 50 cent per bet tax
10:03um it's nothing officially proposed or anything like that it was just floated as something they've
10:08looked at uh based on their estimations they could make up to 40 to 41 million dollars a year
10:15in this uh per bet tax but you really have to wonder based on the action these sports books have
10:21already undergone to kind of mitigate the effect of this new per bet tax fee that just went into effect
10:27july 1st how much another 50 cents from just a city could play into what they might do and how they offer
10:35things to customers so this is just something to keep an eye on again nothing official uh from the
10:40chicago city council but that's being floated and when people start seeing more tax dollars you have to
10:46wonder what happens in the long run of note uh chicago does have a per bet or a tax included in
10:54in-person bets which of course is only at wrigley field right now at a draft kings and they haven't
10:58made a ton of money only that's something you know 20 40 000 or whatever it is so not huge but they they
11:04are looking at it and saying we want to get ours somehow from this uh industry all right now let's move
11:10on to a story that we'll follow up on with you we had sam mcquillen on earlier this week pat
11:14he said that uh you know maybe some progress being made in the state of georgia in a year that we're
11:19making virtually no progress in sports betting for those of you who are unfamiliar missouri is the only
11:24city or state this year that's going to legalize sports betting and have it go online that will happen
11:29in december other than that we're not going to get any other state legalized is georgia a possibility
11:34for 2026 pat i i think we're getting there i think this is something i mean as long as i've been
11:40coming on this show for what four years almost now you know we're looking at georgia georgia is one of
11:45those states that we're always ah the chances are pretty good because there are efforts and every
11:50year there's multiple bills introduced to legalize sports betting but there's different opinions from
11:56the legislators how they want to get it done you know some want to some say not want a constitutional
12:02amendment is necessary to pass that and that includes a vote uh by the voters at the ballot box
12:08but then others say well no we can just legalize it under the lottery and it's fine just as simple as
12:13that so there's that different opinion and they clash and then of course as we always talk about in
12:18the southeast there's quite a bit of uh pushback from the religious right who say you know gambling is
12:24immoral and we don't want to legalize that at all and so you have that going on but of course
12:30you know the last couple of years we've seen efforts get nearly to the finish line and then
12:35stall out because of these differences well now we finally have a house study committee
12:40that started meeting this week and will continue to meet until they make recommendations in december
12:45of hey what do we need to do to do gambling in georgia the first meeting was largely based about
12:51casino gambling so didn't really touch on sports betting uh that'll be touched on in the coming months
12:57as well paramutual horse racing betting options so we'll get uh come december some recommendations
13:03from legislators on how they think it's best to do it and how we go forward uh there was a bill that
13:09is still alive from this last session that will get picked up in uh january or february whenever
13:13they come back to to the session and we'll see what happens that that would go through the
13:19constitutional amendment process which would include a vote in november 2026 so not doing it this year
13:24doesn't set it back very much at all if any based on what the timeline could be so if that does happen
13:29you'd see a 2027 launch uh so we'll see if that goes ahead but yeah slow progress in georgia but i
13:37think this is more progress maybe than ever because now we can finally see lawmakers come together say
13:43hey this is what we like what we don't like why we disagree can we come to a nice agreement and rather
13:49than and do it kind of off session and in a a calmer setting maybe than you know trying to
13:55shove things all through the legislative process when you're trying to get things done before
13:59uh adjourning so yeah a little bit of progress i think we're seeing in georgia here
14:04let's end with a discussion that i think is going to be a hot topic in the future especially with what's
14:10going on in college sports and now of course pat in major league baseball that is prop bets and it
14:16seems like state by state and more legislatures are basically asking the question why why with
14:22all of the betting options why do we need to have prop bets and uh and look you know as somebody that
14:28that personally would love to give all sports betting you know fans and people like to bet options
14:33the groundswell is coming here i mean if anything happens with the cleveland guardian story pat
14:38i think you're going to see the elimination of betting on pitches
14:41yeah i mean this is of course i think this is directly related to the guardian situation where
14:47of course two pitchers have been placed on leave uh at least one of them for suspicious pitching
14:53activities that that monitor uh integrity monitors have targeted and said hey this is a little weird
14:59let's check this out um governor mike dewine came out and said let's end prop betting this isn't good
15:04and of course this isn't the first issue we've seen as you mentioned it's been happening across the
15:08country but you know we've had uh in ohio some dayton flyer basketball players were targeted by
15:14bettors who were upset about prop bets and so back in 2023 we saw the lead regulator there in ohio say
15:20we can't do this we should get rid of these of course that hasn't happened yet but now you got
15:24the governor saying the same thing based on this uh guardian situation and yeah you have to wonder
15:31what's going to happen because to your point people are familiar with these now people expect these
15:35offerings they want to do this they're you know it's not a brand new thing so maybe they then look
15:40offshore and say let's go back there so it's going to be a very tricky thing to figure out moving
15:46forward of course in new jersey we have a new bill that is eliminating in-game wagering because of the
15:52impulsiveness that it they say it encourages from betters kind of the same situation here and it is a
15:59little bit riskier than maybe some just straight bets on games and such when you get down to
16:03integrity uh monitoring issues so yeah to your point you know it just adds to the growing headwinds
16:11against the online gambling industry that we've seen and and you know whether that's the advertising
16:15framework that we've seen proposed at a national level or just the state level regulators saying okay
16:20we need to figure out what kind of bets are good for betters and what kind what people and athletes
16:27at a bigger risk so we'll see what happens but yeah governor mike dewine said no more prop bets in ohio
16:33uh or he doesn't want them of course they still are allowed for the time being but that's what
16:37he's asking for yeah and and you know honestly especially you know focusing on emmanuel class a
16:44here for a minute uh you know we don't know exactly what happened and it's possible that nothing has
16:49happened and these are just an investigation but pat if class a is found to have any wrong
16:55to me pat this is the biggest game changer because yes we've seen it a little bit in the nba
17:01but class a makes a lot of money relative to us he's a big name so yeah and if and if he is found
17:08to have any improprieties it would you know honestly at that point means even if you're making millions
17:14of dollars and you're still willing to stupidly bet on yourself or on sports there could be time
17:18for a change good to see you pat back monday yeah
17:21back back
