00:00You're about to witness the story of an American League pitcher making history for the first time
00:05in a quarter of a century. For the first time in 25 years, a pitcher from the American League
00:10has achieved the remarkable feat of winning consecutive Cy Young Awards. Tarek Skubal
00:16has successfully defended his title, surpassing competitors Garrett Crochet from Boston and
00:21Hunter Brown from Houston, as revealed in the voting results announced on Wednesday.
00:26Skubal's victory marks him as the first American League pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in back to
00:31back years. Since Pedro Martinez accomplished this in 1999 and 2000, he joins Denny McClain as the only
00:38pitchers from the Detroit Tigers franchise to have won multiple Cy Young Awards, with McClain also
00:45achieving this consecutively in 1968 and 1969. Additionally, Hall of Famer Hal Neuhauser won
00:52consecutive AL MVP awards in 1944 and 1945, a decade prior to the establishment of the Cy Young Award.
01:02In a conference call with reporters following the announcement, Skubal expressed his feelings about
01:06the achievement, stating, It means a lot. Anytime you accomplish an award of this presence, honor,
01:13it's really cool. And to be the first one in the American League since Pedro, to win back,
01:17to back, is even more special, obviously. Although Skubal did not receive unanimous support this year,
01:23he garnered 26 out of 30 first-place votes, accumulating a total of 198 points. The other
01:30four candidates received votes for Crochet, who garnered 132 points. Both left-handed pitchers
01:38ranked either first or second on all 30 ballots from the Baseball Writers Association of America.
01:44Although Skubal did not replicate his achievement of winning the American League pitching Triple Crown,
01:50he arguably excelled in certain areas, allowing him to distinguish himself among a competitive group
01:55of AL candidates. His 6.5 B-died W-A-R surpassed last year's total of 6.4, placing him ahead of other
02:04finalists, like Crochet, who had a B-B-W-R of 6.3, and Hunter Brown, who recorded 6.1.
02:12Skubal's impressive 2.21 ERA was nearly a quarter of a run lower than Brown's 2.43,
02:18and his 2.45 FIP significantly outperformed Brown's 2.89. Additionally, Skubal's strikeout
02:25to walk ratio of 7.3 was almost two points higher than Crochet's 5.54. His 187 ERA plus marked the
02:34highest for an AL pitcher since Justin Verlander achieved it in 2022. I believe a lot of it comes
02:40from not being satisfied with who I am today, Skubal remarked. I still feel there is more potential
02:46to unlock. I don't consider myself to be the final version of who I can be. When I retire,
02:53that will be the completed version of myself. I am continuously striving for improvement every single
03:00day. This drive comes from my teammates, our coaching staff, and the strong relationships I have
03:06with them, which collectively help everyone reach their full potential. This is the essence of our
03:11team. The team's performance throughout the season was impressive, particularly during certain standout
03:17moments. Skubal was among five pitchers in the American League to achieve a shutout this season.
03:24Notably, on May 25th, he delivered a remarkable complete game performance against the Guardians,
03:29allowing only two hits, issuing no walks, and striking out 13 batters. His final pitch of the
03:37game, a fastball clocked at 102.6 NPHA, marked the hardest pitch he has ever thrown and resulted in a
03:46strikeout. This outing was recognized as the best by an AL pitcher this season, based on game score.
03:52Before Game 5 of their AL Division Series against the Mariners, manager A.J. Hinch expressed his
03:58confidence, stating, One of the most thrilling aspects of my job is handing the ball to the
04:03best pitcher in baseball. In our clubhouse, there is a profound trust in Skubal to deliver intensity,
04:09provide top-tier pitching, and achieve results. We experience victories together and face defeats
04:15together, but he is the one who guides us, a teammate remarked. Throughout the regular season,
04:20Skubal managed to pitch seven or more scoreless innings in nine of his 31 starts. During a remarkable
04:27stretch, from May 25 to June 12, he allowed only one run, over 30 and two, thirds innings,
04:35followed by an additional 19 scoreless innings, from late June into July. Interestingly, Skubal performed
04:42better against teams, with winning records, achieving a 7.4 record, with a 1.90 ERA and a
04:497.868 whip, and a 7.6 strikeout, to walk ratio. In contrast, his performance against teams,
04:57with losing records, was slightly less impressive, with a 6.2 record, a 2.75 ERA, a .931 whip,
05:05and a 6.85 strikeout, to walk ratio. He secured victories, against every AL Central opponent,
05:11at least once, and did not allow any runs, against AL East teams, except for the Red Sox,
05:18totaling 25 scoreless innings, against the Blue Jays, Yankees, and Orioles. He did not face the
05:24Rays. The only team, that managed to defeat him twice, was Seattle. Reflecting on his individual
05:30achievements, Skubal stated, In terms of what I've accomplished individually, it's great. I take a lot
05:36of pride in it, but it's not an individual sport, it's a team effort. I am dedicated to my sport,
05:42and my primary goal, as part of the team, is to achieve victory. My focus is on contributing,
05:48in any way possible, to help our team succeed. This is the mindset, I maintain. In terms of
05:54performance, Skubal, excelled among his fellow pitchers. His change-up emerged as the most effective
05:59pitch, in terms of run value, scoring a remarkable 25, with a whiff rate of 46.8%, and allowing a mere
06:07.154 batting average against. Additionally, he ranked 10th, among American League pitchers,
06:13for his 4-seam fastball, which had a run value of plus 112. Overall, his total run value of plus 51 was
06:21the highest, in Major League Baseball, surpassing both Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and the 2025 NL Cy Young Award
06:29winner, Paul Skeens, who each had a run value of 42. No other pitcher exceeded a run value of 40.
06:36Catcher Dylan Dingler expressed his admiration for Skubal, following the Tigers' Game 5 defeat,
06:42stating,
06:42He, uh, he put it all out on the line all season. That's the kind of pitcher he is. Uh, he's awesome.
06:51I'm sure I'll always remember this season and what he accomplished. I'll remember last year,
06:55but it was a first-hand experience for me this year. Catching him, it was awesome. Dingler will
07:01have more than memories, out of this season with Skubal, who values his catchers. After winning the
07:06Cy Young Award last year, he celebrated by gifting matching watches, to himself, and his catcher Jake
07:12Rogers during spring training. Skubal is mindful of his achievements and has taken a more thoughtful
07:17approach this time. I believe I've established a standard for what happens when I win Cy Young
07:24Awards, Skubal remarked. Both of them play a significant role in shaping who I am, so, they
07:31will each find a nice gift, waiting for them in their locker, during spring training. This year I
07:36decided to let them browse online, and choose what they like. This way, we can all select something we
07:42want, and however we choose to wear it, is up to us. This approach is a bit different, and there won't
07:47be much of a surprise this time, but I've set the expectation for what I need to do. And as many of
07:54these awards as I can win, I will happily continue to buy my catchers a watch. Doesn't this incredible
08:01achievement make you wonder just how far dedication and talent can take an athlete?
