00:00Welcome to this exciting update about the Detroit Tigers.
00:04The Detroit Tigers have announced an extension of manager A.J. Hinch's contract, as confirmed
00:09by Scott Harris, the president of baseball operations, during a press conference held
00:13at the conclusion of the season.
00:15The specific details of the contract extension were not made public.
00:19Harris stated, We extended A.J. earlier in the year.
00:23I truly enjoy collaborating with A.J. and believe he is among the top managers in the
00:27sport.
00:28We have proactively extended his contract twice because we want him to remain with
00:32us for as long as he desires, and I hope to work alongside him for as long as possible.
00:37This was one of the simplest discussions I've had, as he also wants to be here.
00:42We are both optimistic about the future of this organization, and take pride in what we
00:47have accomplished together over the past three years.
00:50This announcement comes almost five years after Hinch was initially hired by the Tigers, following
00:55the conclusion of the 2020 World Series, under the leadership of then-general manager Al Avila.
01:01Not only has Hinch managed to navigate a significant restructuring within the front office, but he
01:06has also flourished in his collaboration with Harris.
01:09A.J. Hinch recently extended his contract after the 2023 season, marking their first complete
01:15season together.
01:16He has now managed the Detroit Tigers for the same number of seasons as he did with the Houston
01:21Astros. As a former catcher for the Tigers, Hinch has a managerial record of 394 wins and
01:27416 losses, .486, with the team, which includes consecutive playoff appearances and victories
01:34in the Wild Cards series.
01:36Over his 12-year managerial career which spans across Arizona, Houston, and Detroit, he has
01:41achieved a total record of 964 wins and 868 losses, 526.
01:47Hinch currently holds the eighth position on the Tigers' all-time list for managerial wins
01:53and has the potential to move up to sixth place next year by surpassing Del Baker, who
01:59recorded 417 wins from 1933 to 1942, and Ty Cobb, who achieved 479 wins from 1921 to 1926.
02:12Hinch expressed his commitment to the team, stating,
02:14I've been in this chair for a long time, not just the managing chair in Detroit, but across
02:18the league. I've been asked many times about contracts and commitments. I'm incredibly
02:22happy to be in Detroit, and I take great pride in being the manager here. I enjoy working with
02:27Scott, and when I was approached again for an extension, my response was an immediate
02:31yes.
02:33When you find yourself in an environment that both challenges and fulfills you, it naturally
02:38draws you in.
02:39I felt honored and excited about the opportunity. After a conversation with my wife, I quickly
02:45returned to Scott with a resounding yes, and we moved forward. During the season, it can
02:50be difficult to reflect on your personal situation, which is why both Scott and I agreed that we
02:55should proceed without dwelling on it. My focus is on the players. The Tigers maintain a policy
03:00of not disclosing contract details for non-playing staff.
03:04Hinch has been collaborating with the same coaching team for the last two seasons.
03:07At the press conference on Monday, there was no update regarding whether the Tigers would
03:11keep all their coaches for the upcoming year, as discussions are scheduled for this week.
03:16Hinch mentioned,
03:17We haven't had a comprehensive discussion about the staff yet. We will, and as we do with
03:22everything, we will assess every possible avenue for improvement. I believe our staff
03:26has...
03:26We have addressed many of the challenges we faced, and we are actively implementing various
03:30strategies that are advancing this major league team. Our efforts include fostering a strong
03:35connection with the minor leagues, and establishing an environment that allows young players to
03:39feel both comfortable and challenged. Overall, I believe we are in a positive position, but
03:44it is essential for us to evaluate our entire group thoroughly. We will be conducting that
03:48debriefing. What are your thoughts on this contract extension and the team's future? Go Tigers!
