00:01How's everyone doing?
00:02Okay, so first and foremost, I want to thank the Marin Tish family
00:06and our GM Joe Shane for giving me the opportunity here to lead this team.
00:10This is a league of incredibly difficult situations, decisions,
00:16and I just had the utmost respect for Dave's and what he's done for me,
00:20not only as a friend but as a coach,
00:22giving me an opportunity here to be an offensive coordinator.
00:26And so I just wanted my thoughts with him and his family,
00:29and I just appreciate the things he's done for me,
00:31and I've learned a lot from him.
00:33In terms of where we're at right now, I'm excited to lead this group,
00:38focusing each day, taking kind of just one step at a time with the players
00:41and the coaches and getting organized.
00:44But I'm excited and looking forward to the challenge.
00:48Just a couple things I would say is first and foremost,
00:51I'm going to make Tim Kelly our offensive coordinator.
00:53Really smart coach.
00:55He'll help us tie in the run game, the pass game.
00:57He does a great job with a lot of good experiences to bank on.
01:00We're also going to put Jameis Winston as our starting quarterback,
01:04and he'll do a great job.
01:05I have a lot of confidence in Jameis, have a lot of confidence in Russ,
01:07and he'll be the backup as Jackson works through the concussion protocol.
01:13I think our players are pros, right?
01:15They're pros.
01:15So my job is to get them in the best position to be successful
01:19and work through the week here and continue to make adjustments with the staff
01:23as we're continuing to prep for Green Bay, which is the most important thing.
01:27So really taking our time, making sure we cross our T's, dot our I's,
01:32and put together a great plan for the players.
01:33Because that's really, at the end of the day,
01:35those are the guys that have been on my mind the last 48 hours.
01:37So, again, I'm thankful and appreciative, and now we're back on track,
01:43and we've got a big task at hand and a big challenge in front of us.
01:45Mike, do you still co-play as you say,
01:48from Kelly as the offensive coordinator?
01:50Yes.
01:50Mike, do you think of this as an audition for you?
01:54Listen, I just think my only focus is just the players.
01:57We need to make sure as a group, as a staff, we come together,
02:01put together a great plan, and really just focus on what the most important thing is.
02:05That's today, our practice, our prep, the meetings that we're in,
02:08the communication, and then just working through the details of the game plan.
02:12Because things are going to change,
02:13and we've got to be able to have some flexibility and adapt to it.
02:15So that's been probably our biggest messaging
02:17in terms of the coaching staff to the players.
02:19You alluded to it that Dave was just so instrumental
02:22in giving you the opportunity here as OC
02:24when you first heard that he was being relieved
02:27and that he was being in the interim.
02:29What were those initial emotions and reaction like?
02:32Yeah, I certainly didn't anticipate it,
02:35but it's one of those things that happened in this league.
02:38And again, I'm appreciative of what Dave's has done for me
02:40as a professional, as a coach, as a person,
02:44and getting to understand and know his family.
02:47And these things are, there's a human element to it too.
02:49So I'm very sensitive to that, and I wish him nothing but the best.
02:53And we'll continue to stay in touch with him
02:55because he's a great friend of mine.
02:56But there's a time for us in this group to continue to move forward
03:01and go enjoy this and enjoy this process and this journey.
03:05Mike, what went into Jameis and turned into Jameis?
03:09I think Jameis has done a great job since he's been here,
03:12just like all our quarterback room.
03:13I've got a lot of trust in that room, being in there all the time,
03:17pretty much every single day since we've been here.
03:19But I've got a good feel for those guys.
03:21I think Jameis will do a heck of a job.
03:22He's a great leader.
03:24He has a lot of production in this league,
03:26and I think he's going to do a great job leading that group.
03:28What was his reaction when you told him?
03:30Because obviously he's a pretty big part of it.
03:32He's very excited.
03:33He's very excited for the opportunity, and I think he'll run with it.
03:37Mike, what a suggestion?
03:38How was your decision to make that change?
03:40Say that again.
03:40How was your decision to make that change?
03:42Yes.
03:42Mike?
03:44Did anyone else give input on that decision?
03:46No, it was mine.
03:47Mike, do you anticipate any more coaching changes down the pike?
03:54Right now, no.
03:55Right now, Tim Kelly's would be the only move.
03:57I have a lot of trust in our group
03:59and being around these guys for the last several years.
04:02A lot of trust, a lot of confidence,
04:03and now we can kind of get together
04:05and come together with a great plan for the players.
04:07Mike, so the confidence level is still pretty high with Shane Baldwin.
04:11Yeah, I'd say collectively as a unit,
04:14and we've met several times over the past couple of days,
04:16getting on the same page, the communication,
04:19talking about some of just the minor little tweaks
04:20that we would do throughout the week to make it more efficient
04:23and to clean up some communication stuff.
04:25So that would be, for us, that's probably the biggest thing,
04:27is me getting on the same page with them.
04:29I'm not, up until this point,
04:31haven't been privileged to those conversations.
04:33So getting caught up to speed
04:34and communicating what I like and what I like to see
04:38and then them going and doing it.
04:39Mike, on game day, you're going to be calling the plays.
04:44You're also going to be the head coach the first time.
04:46It's a lot.
04:47So how do you plan to navigate your game day?
04:51You know, you need a right-hand man
04:52because you can't do everything you want.
04:53Yeah, we have a great team upstairs in the box
04:56with Ty and Cade doing a great job of communicating that.
04:59And just like we talked through it
05:01throughout the rest of the week,
05:02just going through our plan for how we're going to manage the game,
05:05fourth down decisions, timeouts, challenges,
05:08you know, all of those things that, you know,
05:09we talked throughout the training camp,
05:11but now that I'm the decision maker,
05:14that will be just kind of ramped up a little bit more
05:16and we have to, you know, spend a little bit more time on it.
05:17But that's really all it is,
05:18just the communication aspect of it
05:21and talking through how we want to handle this game particularly.
05:23There's a lot of factors that could roll up into it,
05:26you know, whether it's the weather,
05:27whether it's the time on the clock, timeouts,
05:29the opponent you're going against,
05:30which is going to be a great challenge.
05:32Understanding that Dart is in the protocol right now,
05:35when he does come back,
05:36how much of a priority is it to,
05:39with the great ability that he has to extend plays with his legs
05:41to get him to slide and be less injury susceptible?
05:45Yeah, just like you said, Jackson's still in the protocol.
05:48I think having a great plan and, again,
05:50working in unison with Coach Kelly and our offensive staff
05:54and putting together that plan that way when he is ready to go,
05:56that we have a great plan to keep him healthy.
05:59Mike, what if Jackson's last couple of days have been like,
06:03has he gotten additional valuations, where does his stand in the protocol?
06:06Yeah, he's just, he's in the middle of it.
06:08And I'm not, to be honest with you,
06:10like I have a lot of trust in our medical staff and our medical team,
06:14and they're taking great care of him.
06:16So, you know, each day I get a little bit of an update.
06:19He's right on track and right on pace in the program.
06:21Mike, what do you think of the talent of this team
06:24that now you're leading into battle?
06:26But I really have a lot of belief in this team
06:29and a lot of trust in this team, being around them,
06:31how these guys fight and battle.
06:32I think, you know, we've just had some things right there at the end
06:35that we just got to go grasp and take it.
06:37So, you know, just keeping that aggressive mentality,
06:39keeping that growth mindset and continuing to learn from these situations.
06:42And then when we get another opportunity to capitalize on it,
06:45then we got to go do it.
06:46Mike, a lot of times people are thrust into this sort of a role
06:49and maybe they're not ready for it.
06:51You've obviously thought about being a head coach for a few offseasons now.
06:55What makes you think you're ready for this?
06:58Well, you know, I appreciate that question.
07:01Right now my only focus really, you guys, is just on the players.
07:03Like these – I've been thinking about them for the last 48 hours,
07:07and I'm sure not every single one of these guys have reacted the same way.
07:11So I'm really sensitive to that,
07:13and it would be selfish of me to think anything else but the players.
07:16So getting these guys on the same page, getting them a great plan
07:19with really decisive calls, a decisive game plan
07:23so they can go and execute it at a high level, that's most important.
07:26Mike, what's the biggest change?
07:30Sorry.
07:31What's the biggest change?
07:33Yeah, you certainly have a few more meetings, you know,
07:38the scheduling of stuff, and just there's a lot of details that go into it.
07:41That, you know, you have to make sure you make a good decision on,
07:44a well-thought-out decision, and not just take it for granted.
07:47You know, you want to be able to set up the player.
07:48It's all built around the guys.
07:50How are we getting them to maximize the most amount of football time,
07:53the most amount of rest so they can have their bodies to be fresh,
07:56and then the most efficient way to get the game plan so they can go out and play.
08:00So just as going through it and being with a couple – you know,
08:04leaning on mentors and leaning on people in my past
08:06and putting together a plan and talking with the experts that we have already on the team
08:10and what the best way to approach that is,
08:12that's, you know, what I've been kind of dealing with the last couple days.
08:15Mike, did you expect any other significant changes as you move forward here?
08:19No.
08:20I mean, player-wise.
08:22Player-wise.
08:23Oh, no, and again, working with Joe, we'll have a good plan in terms of, you know,
08:27as we get closer to game day, like working through the injuries
08:30and talking about how we want to handle the elevations and stuff.
08:33But right now, you know, it's Wednesday.
08:35You know, we're working through the – just the beginning part,
08:38the beginning stages of that.
08:39Mike, what about practices?
08:42Do you anticipate changing or tweaking anything as far as the practice schedule goes?
08:45Yeah, we'll have some minor tweaks.
08:47I think one of the most important things I stressed to the players was
08:50we're not just going to change stuff to change it for no reason.
08:53We're going to have a plan and have an intent on what we want to emphasize that day,
08:58whether it's, you know, first and second down,
09:00whether it's at the end of the game,
09:01whether it's the pressure packages or anything that we want to emphasize that week.
09:05And it's just communicating with the coaches.
09:07And so, yeah, there'll be some minor tweaks
09:09and some little things for the players that they'll need to be flexible on.
09:12But, again, we have a great staff and we communicate great,
09:15starting with L.Y., who's been doing a great job helping me get organized
09:20these last couple days and getting that to the players.
09:22Mike, how did Russ take being quarterback three now
09:26and do you expect him to spend the rest of the season here rather than ask him to leave?
09:30Yeah, no, Russ is a true pro.
09:33Russ is a true pro, and I know he's been through a couple tough things.
09:37And, listen, the way he responds is unbelievable.
09:41I have a ton of respect for Russ.
09:43And, again, he's probably going to be the backup this week.
09:45He's one play away, just like he was last week.
09:48And so we need him, and he's a crucial part of our offense.
09:51He's a crucial part of our unit and our group and our leadership group.
09:55So I'd expect nothing less from him and how he would respond to the news.
09:59Mike, how did things change with –
10:00Mike, how did things change with –
10:02because this was a guy that –
10:04going into the camp with a group,
10:05he was just doing the batting table on the first time.
10:08So maybe this organization was very adamant on him.
10:10And now he's gone from starter to lost the job to Jackson,
10:17and now he's lost the job to James as well.
10:19Yeah, you know, I think those are –
10:21I mean, that's a valid question because I love Russ.
10:23I love Russ, but it's like I don't want to continue to revisit that.
10:27Russ understands the direction we're going moving forward.
10:29That's really where our focus is, is like today and moving forward.
10:32And Russ is part of that plan.
10:34And his role is defined as the backup,
10:36and he's ready to attack that role.
10:38You know, we had a good conversation.
10:40I'm sure it's, you know, wasn't necessarily easy for him,
10:43which I understand that, a human element of it.
10:45But Russ is going to –
10:47Russ is one of the best team players I've ever been around.
10:49He's one of the best locker room guys I've ever been around.
10:52And I know he'll attack this role with everything he has.
10:55What did Steve Fish and John Mayer tell you about the expectations for you now
11:00going into the last two games of the season?
11:02Yeah, those are – it was a great conversation.
11:05I'll leave it privately between us, but it was a great conversation.
11:08And, you know, it was cool to kind of talk through a little bit of my plan
11:13and now go put it – implement it and put it in place.
11:16Mike, what –
11:17Mike, will Jameis be the backup the rest of the year when Jackson's healthy?
11:21We're just going to – for this week, this is where it's at,
11:24and we're just evaluating it.
11:25I think Jackson, he's in the protocol.
11:27We'll make that decision and go through it.
11:29But right now we're just going to live in this week and live in just today.
11:32You know, I'm trying to just – you know, you get into this role
11:35and there's a lot of things going on.
11:37You don't want to get yourself too far, overextended into the future.
11:40You want to just make sure that we're ready and prepared for this – for today,
11:44get the things going and start getting prepared for the rest of the remainder of this week.
11:49And, I mean, because we have a huge challenge.
11:50I mean, I understand why you're asking that, but, you know,
11:54there's some other things that we've got to make sure we get accomplished
11:56before we get to that point.
11:57Mike, what do you hope on 1 o'clock kickoff on Sunday?
12:02Say that again.
12:02What do you hope at 1 o'clock kickoff on Sunday that the fans see from this team
12:07that maybe they haven't seen before with you at the helm down?
12:10Yeah, that's great.
12:11I think, again, we are focused on today.
12:14And I want to make sure our players understand that.
12:16We don't play the game today, so our guys are going to be prepared.
12:20Where we're at today is in first, second down.
12:22We're talking through the first, second down blitzes, the run game, the pass game.
12:26We're talking about what our strengths and weaknesses going into this game are going to be
12:29and how we're going to attack the other crew in the Green Bay Packers.
12:34So, you know, it's going to be a great challenge.
12:37We're just taking it day by day, and I think that's what's most important.
12:39Our guys have got to live in this moment right now,
12:41and then we'll put them again in another plan, and we'll be able to attack that tomorrow.
12:44Mike, what do you think, Mike?
12:45Obviously, it was such a big defensive battle.
12:48What did you see in Micah Parsons and that, you know, that whole unit
12:54that just made the battle in the trenches?
12:57Yeah, it's a great unit.
12:59Really, all three phases, they have talented players everywhere.
13:03Micah particularly, Gary.
13:05I mean, those guys stand out because of the sack production,
13:07but their defenses are really – they're well-coached, they're very aggressive,
13:12and they know how to rush the passer, and it's a tough crew.
13:16So, you know, I think it's a great challenge for us and our offensive staff.
13:19It would be a great challenge for our special teams unit
13:21and our defensive units as well.
13:23And I think our coaches are – I know our coaches are doing a hell of a job
13:26prepping for this and getting our guys ready.
13:28Mike, what makes a great head coach in your mind,
13:37and how does that compare to the challenge of having to step in
13:41as an interim head coach when there's a lot that's already, you know, put in place for you?
13:47I think the best head coaches I've been around are guys that are confident, poised,
13:53have a direction, have a plan, and then go execute the plan.
13:57And if something goes just a little bit different, then you go back and you adjust.
14:01You have flexibility to adjust.
14:04Accountability, holding guys accountable to the highest standard.
14:07If it's not right, fix it.
14:08Don't wait and let things just kind of trickle and snowball, right?
14:12So you want to be able to do that.
14:14Guys that empower players to be their best.
14:18And so those are things that I've learned over my past that I think are great qualities
14:22in head coach and things that I try to mirror.
14:27So if there's a lack of my helmet that I think.
14:29I think I don't really want to do that.
14:31vaccineers know,
14:32I think that I have to get enough questions to the habit of trying to accommodate,
14:33I think that I can do that.
14:34So if I'm going to do those things on the street and doing great deal,
14:35what with the series is that,
14:36what kind of thehorn seats can do,
14:38that is nothing meant to do as an adult adaptation.
14:39You'll have to follow.
14:40And I think that,
14:42well,
14:44iehtie,
14:45what depending on the work you have on,
14:47do what kind of Marvel have already起こwalker?
