00:00Giants Super Bowl champ David Tyree is back on to talk about anything and everything Giants
00:11from the loss of the Packers. Mike Caff is head coaching debut and of course we got to talk
00:16Abdul Carter being benched for a series in that Packers game. DT welcome back man how you feeling?
00:23You missed out on some Giants football I guess before we get deep into the Packers and all the
00:28storylines coming out of things what have you seen these last couple of weeks? Yeah I mean it's
00:34obviously disappointing from the time that we last got a chance to talk Big Blue we obviously
00:39had the firing of head coach Brian Dable I think it was it was timely it was necessary and I think
00:46for a number of different reasons not to not to open up the the wounds but at the end of the day
00:51every opportunity to lose was awarded and this is a giant football team that can win and I think
00:59making the best putting this team in the best position to win has proven for a quarter over and
01:06over again a number of different ways in which we melt down you have to take some measure of
01:11accountability but again coming back into this week with it with the Green Bay Packers I've always been
01:16a little bit more bullish on Mike Kafka as a play caller I like what I saw so in relation to hey
01:22what this team looked like they had an identity and they fought and clawed and they still lost but at
01:27the end of the day we stand true to Big Blue and there's there's there's another week to prepare
01:31for us let's get it. So let's stay on Kafka's head coaching debut we're getting to some of the
01:35storylines uh in a little bit what grade would you give Kafka uh you're down to your third string
01:42quarterback no Malik neighbors no Cam Scatterboo but they were still able to put up 330 plus total
01:49offense Jameis Winston outshined Jordan Love per se and they were able to run the football better than
01:55the Packers so what grade would you give Kafka as a whole as head coach? I'm going to give him a B
02:03a flat B and the only reason why I wouldn't give him a B plus is is there a little bit more that you get
02:10out of Jameis Winston um no because we saw the risk you know like when I say you know we understand
02:17that Jameis is a is a proven capable quarterback in the National Football League but we saw the the risk
02:22and the multiple dropped interceptions with Jameis Winston um what you saw is a controlled executed
02:28offensive identity run the ball 37 football 37 times and lean off the play action allow James to stand in
02:37the pocket and deliver the football with the strong arm that he has and give the defense the opportunity
02:43to command you saw your stars play well Burns Lawrence and and Carter and that gave the Giants
02:50an opportunity they did not break the the the the the identity of what they believe gave them a best
02:57chance to win and at the end of the day they were in position with the chance to at least tie up this
03:01football game yeah defense couldn't close out another one it's a back-to-back games where he
03:07had a lead in the fourth quarter especially after the Jameis Winston go ahead uh touchdown big storyline
03:13coming out of this game right now uh before we talk about the overall defensive performance
03:17Abdul Carter getting benched for the opening series there were reports that were saying that
03:22he was asleep during a team walkthrough but then he took it to x or twitter and then he said that he was
03:30getting recovery done which means that uh that's treatment in in our translation two things here
03:37DT I got to get your thoughts on on obviously you know him being benched and with Kafka benching him
03:42for that series two do you think he could Ronnie Barnes and the team trainers are going to say a
03:49little something like oh wait wait what young fella you weren't with us you we know when you're
03:53supposed to be out there at a at a walkthrough or at a practice so what do you think of uh obviously
03:58you know this whole Abdul Carter situation um from from where we where we stand yeah
04:05it's obviously a you know I'm gonna call this a c-level event where there's smoke there's fire and I
04:09think at the end of the day whether you were in treatment you weren't where you're supposed to be
04:13anytime a new you talk about an interim coach has to take accountability that means you were you
04:18were not where you were supposed to be when you needed to be there and that's a reflection of your
04:22immaturity as you're as you're growing into this national football league why you weren't there
04:26it really doesn't matter it's kind of like Tom Coughlin was known to be the hardest coach in the
04:31national football league he would find a guy he didn't he didn't care why you why you were late
04:35you could have had a snow issue and honestly knowing old school TC you know your girlfriend's
04:41water might have break you might have still got the fine and that was why he was an antagonist why
04:46he wasn't loved by most players but he was a principled man I think at the end of the day you have
04:49to begin to establish the things that you're not willing to live with and Mike Kafka did this by
04:54benching um an emerging star and might not be a big issue but it's an issue all right so let's go
04:59to the defense as a whole we've seen the four games where the Giants offense has put them in a position
05:05to be up by double digit leads they gave those away back-to-back games like I mentioned earlier the
05:11Chicago game and now the Green Bay Packers game they had a fourth quarter lead they couldn't close
05:17another one out uh just what what what what's going on like what what what would you say to
05:26Antonio Pierce and those guys in the locker room if the defense wasn't holding up to their end of the
05:31bargain yeah you know here here's what I would say you know and I think my how the how the how the time
05:40has changed from the first quarter of the season where where defense was giving the offense a chance and I
05:46would really say them not being able to close out is the fact that they don't have a punch
05:50they don't have a closer um this is a this is a this is a kind of like a wreck the wall not seize
05:57but not seize the mountain kind of defense um not a lot of blitzing and obviously we have our stars
06:04playing solid football you saw pressures from Dexter Lawrence you saw Brian Burns with two sacks
06:08leading the NFL but they don't have a closer they don't have someone that is constantly in position
06:13making plays this year um when you need them so they're very untimely and they break down at the
06:19worst um worst worst times and worst positions um not in position to make make make big plays to get
06:25the defense off the field and that's really all you see they get worn down as this game goes on and
06:30sadly in a fourth quarter when we need you the most they're just not there it's a let down defense
06:36instead of a instead of a linchpin squad so you know Giants have there's something wanting there
06:41even though we see these moments of of stability um it's kind of like hey man you know you you you
06:49got me fired up but you're just not hitting home and there's no home run hitters for our defense
06:54and you can tell Mike Kafka wants Shane Bowen to be more aggressive maybe send a little bit more
06:59pressure send more guys maybe off the edge and blitz a little bit more because you heard y'all he was
07:05speaking with one of our I believe our New York Post reporters post game and he was saying they're asking
07:10him like what did you say to the defense after Jameis uh scored and you guys took the go-ahead lead
07:15he said be aggressive and get us the football back so you can tell Mike Kafka now I I'm the head coach
07:22now this is on my resume this is on my watch we're doing what we're we're doing what we got to do
07:28since we what week two since that Cowboys game you guys Shane Bowen and you guys close this thing out
07:35and you see fans calling for Shane Bowen's job all the time or they're like fix it fix it fix it
07:41DT they're two and nine right now we're going into the 12th week of the season we're closer to the end
07:46than we are the beginning that what do you say to people who say fix it like is it a change in in
07:53schematics change in coordinator change it like how do you fix it at two and nine yeah I don't know
08:00if there's a true fix you're gonna he would have to change his philosophy and I mean let's that's
08:05coming off the ego right but at the end of the day there has to be something done that stimulates
08:10you know the the pulse of a game there's always an intuitive nature of football there's do your job
08:16and then there's understanding the circumstance and I think what Shane Bowen is unwilling or proven
08:21to be either unwilling or in in incapable of doing is recognizing the those opportunities
08:27in light of your personnel is there something that I can do to to to to get this team off balance
08:35there and I think Kafka has a little bit more of that on the offensive on the offensive side
08:40um we saw the screen game uh a couple great plays by Adrian Tracy I I just haven't seen that
08:47from Shane Bowen it's been a steady display of maybe why his philosophy could work but in the
08:53moments where it matters most there's not the ability to to kind of just pivot um seize the
08:59moment and and empower this personnel we talked about it earlier with Abdul Carter when can we see
09:05this guy in the mix when Kayvon Thibodeau is healthy and it's just hey man in light of this
09:10personnel that we have and this expectation of depth what can we see here is it twist is it blitz
09:15is it is it uh you know a disguise and coverage it has to be something you could do to just not just
09:21break the old school 4-3 Tony Dungy Tampa 2 mindset that works when you have the best players in the
09:28world you don't have that yeah earlier in the season especially that Chargers game you saw
09:32Shane Bowen calling up a lot of two-man stunts with Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence and you just
09:38haven't seen uh much of that uh in recent in recent games and on the defense is struggling hopefully
09:45they can have a game where they can kind of change the narrative at least stop the narrative about
09:49them and you want them to be put in this position again because it's like hey hey you know close it
09:57out close it out this is a defense we're on paper especially this defensive line people were comparing
10:02them to the 07 and 2011 defensive line and the players they kept down playing it back in the spring
10:09Brian Burns is one of those guys and we're like you know this is great but we still got to go out
10:14there and prove it and they just haven't been able to do that yet and it's unfortunate because
10:19we thought this in years past we've always thought hey the defense has held this team to 17 if I held
10:25this team to 13 it was the Giants offense that wasn't scoring points and we were like defense did
10:31everything that they could do to win a football game now for some reason for some weird reason it is
10:37just a complete opposite and now at two and nine this season just it's just another one of those
10:43seasons you put your hands up and you're just like someone said well a fan told me the other day a
10:48Packers fan I'm going back and forth with them they say the NY and Giants stands for next year
10:53well I guess I got nothing no rebuttal left on that one so it was just like he shut me up so
11:00you know it's just you just you you want this team to be play better uh for the rest of the year
11:05uh one thing we got to talk about man at being uh former receivers uh like we are opportunity you
11:13see you see people you see it bring the best out of people and you see people fold we saw opportunity
11:21arise for two different players Isaiah Hodgins who just got off the plane from the Steelers practice
11:29squad and before that he was with the 49ers practice squad and got released by the Giants
11:33got off the plane Wednesday Thursday came in led all receivers even the Packers receivers with five
11:40for 57 nothing special but it was the type of catches that he made first down after first down
11:45then you see Jalen Hyatt third round pick who they continue to give opportunity after opportunity to
11:53to show that hey you are our third round pick you are a guy Isaiah Hodgins rises to the occasion
12:00Jalen Hyatt has two for 18 had two you know really nice catches to move the chains and then in that
12:06moment DT against the cover two safety to where we know the flat and that that that corner route off
12:14especially in the red zone it's like the the why why didn't he take advantage of his opportunity
12:22his big moment to shut everybody up
12:25I could tell you this I I I've been I've been holding out long enough so much hope when you look
12:35at the talent when you look at the resume of a Jalen Hyatt and you just honestly there's just not that
12:40kind of raw speed and ability it has respectable size I'm done I'm done I I can't I can't fathom it
12:49and I wanted to say you know I didn't initially see the play so when I see the replay I said maybe
12:53it was a corner stop but I said there he looks like a space cadet he looks like a space cadet out
12:59there he looks very unconfident very uncertain and you're talking about the fourth quarter of a
13:05football game where you're maybe you don't know you're auditioning for the rest of your career
13:09these are moments where I begin to continuously fall in love with players like Isaiah Hodges
13:15not because he's a number two or three wide receiver in the National Football League because
13:21he's a football player he's a guy who loves the game who competes who plays with tremendous fervor
13:26and integrity so when I look at the opportunity afforded to a unique talent like a Jalen Hyatt this
13:31does not make any sense it's it's an unconvincing performance and an untimely performance by Jalen
13:40Hyatt throughout this season not just this game and hopefully that's for the rest of the season
13:46that's not the ending point but I I don't have much more to hope for in light of what I've seen
13:53in the last few years very disappointing so finish us off here DT with Tyrese Tate because he's not the
13:59only player that fans have repeatedly called out for effort if you're Mike Kafka you're two and nine
14:05you just lost your first game as interim head coach you want to close this season out on the right
14:11on the right note you saw him bench a premier player for for a series because he was late for a meeting
14:17what does Mike Kafka have to do to make sure those guys in that locker room know that anything outside of
14:25a hundred percent or Brian Burns type effort will not be tolerated yeah and I think that's well I think
14:34that the only thing that he really can do right you're talking about a limited sample size
14:38Giants really needed a Darius Slayton on Sunday right get get the best guys that you can healthy
14:43but there are certain efforts and certain demonstrations that you do can't you just cannot
14:49tolerate and I'm I hate it like I said I don't want to say I hate to say it I just have this innate
14:54belief in ability that Mike Mike Kafka actually knows what he's doing in my estimation I've watched him
15:00the last three years as a play caller taking the back road being a great team guy and being demoted
15:07while still adding value and coming back this year and demonstrating a capable New York Giants offense
15:13which was not the highlight of this football team actually taking command under Jackson Jackson Dart and
15:19now Jameis Winston so what can you do make hard decisions like you did with Abdul Carter make maybe make
15:26another hard decision to figure out there's another wide receiver that you can get in there
15:30to to demonstrate how badly he wants to play but at the end of the day he does not have a lot of chips
15:37to bargain with and I think that's the only disadvantage for this interim head coach who's who's displaying
15:43a unique opportunity to galvanize a football team that doesn't have much to play for but actually played
15:49their hearts out and were in position to compete with a pretty good New York Green Bay Packers football team
15:54so cheers let's move on to the next one let's see if Blue could get a little bit of blood up under their
16:01up under their skin and go to war next week yeah I'm glad you said that about Kafka and I'll close this out here
16:07because he has demonstrated everything that we the NFL players go through he went through the business and the
16:15politics of the business of getting stripped with the the play calling duties so that's the definition of
16:22you don't have to get ready if you stay ready and then on the flip side of it you know he he is he has shown
16:29that if I'm gonna be a head coach yeah I've been cool as an offensive coordinator but there are certain
16:36things I'm not going to tolerate there's a standard I still have a Kafka standard that I am going to
16:42implement and make sure that I police within this locker room within this within this building this practice
16:47facility and I think you know you gave him a B I I'd give him a B plus just because he didn't have
16:53Jackson Dart he didn't have Cam Scadaboo and Malik Neighbors and they were still able to do what they
16:58did on offense and I give him the plus there because of what he said about wanting to be aggressive
17:04on defense it's like he's read the room and he's read the fan base and what people want to see
17:10uh DT appreciate you hopping out hopping on with this thank you guys for watching make sure you
17:16tune in on Thursday because we'll have the pregame uh I mean the Blue Rush pregame show uh with myself
