What kind of coach do the Giants need to stop this coaching carousel
00:03
that we've seen over the last decade plus?
00:07
A good one.
00:09
Yes, that would help, Mike.
00:10
A good one.
00:10
That would help.
00:11
See, here's the thing.
00:12
People want to say, well, get an experienced coach.
00:14
Get an experienced coach.
00:15
Guess what?
00:15
When Bill Parcells was hired, that was his first head coaching job
00:18
in the NFL.
00:19
That's a good point.
00:20
Everybody who's been hired was hired for the first time.
00:23
You know, sometimes that's Tom Landry,
00:24
and you wind up coaching for 35 years.
00:27
And sometimes it's Joe Judge, and you wind up, you know,
00:29
coaching competently for maybe three games.
00:34
Look, if it was easy, everybody would hire a good coach.
00:37
And that's the thing.
00:38
Everything about Shane and Dave will scream that this was a great
00:42
and inspired choice.
00:44
And let's not forget that in their first year,
00:46
what ultimately might doom them is that they were so far above expectation.
00:51
They were 9-6-1.
00:52
They made the playoffs.
00:54
They won a playoff game.
00:56
I mean, they were so far ahead.
00:57
I mean, if the Giants had started that first year 2-14
01:00
and then progressed, I mean, things might have been different.
01:04
I mean, look, I mean, we're not talking about three bad years in a row,
01:07
and it's hard for any coach to survive that.
01:09
But, you know, you add into the fact, the mix here,
01:12
that they both had such early speed.
01:14
And, you know, Dable's first game as a coach,
01:16
he was treated like a savior because he went for two
01:19
at the very end of a game in Tennessee.
01:21
Remember that?
01:22
That seems like about –
01:23
I remember that, yeah.
01:23
That was only three years ago.
01:25
And, you know, that's the nature of it.
01:27
So, there's a question.
01:28
I mean, look, if there was one guy I could say hire, I mean, yeah,
01:32
I'd love to say that.
01:33
But I'm not that smart because I don't think a lot of people are that smart.
01:37
Sometimes you've got to get lucky and hire the right guy.
01:40
Who thought Bill Belichick was the right guy after his turn year in Cleveland
01:43
and his first year in New England?
01:45
Nobody did.
01:46
You know, look what happened there.
01:47
I mean, so these things are just – they're hard to predict.
01:50
I mean, obviously, you know, if you hire an established coach
01:53
like Denver did, you know, with Sean Payton,
01:56
you have an idea that they're going to know what they're doing.
01:59
But there's no guarantee there.
02:01
You know, I know that one of the hot names now is Lane Kiffin.
02:03
I love Lane Kiffin.
02:04
I think he's a terrific coach.
02:05
I think he belongs – he needs to stay in Ole Miss because he's got a kingdom there.
02:10
And that includes all the other great, you know, big-time programs
02:13
that are going to be begging for him to come over the next couple of weeks
02:16
in addition to whatever pro offers you might have.
02:19
But, you know, let's not forget, Lane Kiffin didn't exactly set the world on fire
02:23
his first time in the NFL either.
02:24
That was a long time ago.
02:26
But you never have any – you just never have any guarantees.
02:29
I know people want to say, don't hire a coordinator this time.
02:31
Who knows?
02:32
Maybe you're going to hire a great coordinator.
02:34
You know, Andy Reid was a coordinator once.
02:36
It's true.
02:37
He worked out okay.
02:38
Okay.
