Last Thursday, the government presented its Revitalisation plan which comprises major projects and seeks to attract interest from both local and foreign investors. It's a plan that Chairman of the Confederation of Regional Business Chambers, Vivek Charan, is backing to be a success.

Here's Dominic Ramroop with more.
Transcript
00:00Speaking on TV6's Morning Edition program, Chairman of the Confederation of Regional Business Chambers, Vivek Charon,
00:06endorsed the government's revitalization plan, despite there being a couple of questions to be answered with regards to financing.
00:13This rollout of this plan, it looks good, it has lots of benefits.
00:19There are questions as to where is the money coming from, how much can be done.
00:23But certainly within that, what we like is the idea that this plan is not, you know, it's spread across the country.
00:35So we're looking at Port of Spain, San Fernando, Tamina in the east.
00:39We're also looking at Chagona Central.
00:42We see a large amount of decentralization, which is important because decentralization is going to ease,
00:48which would give us some, you know, ease when it comes to congestion and road traffic.
00:54It should create some jobs.
00:55With questions arising as to how the projects making up the government's revitalization plan will be funded,
01:01Charon thinks the government will explore joint ventures between the public and private sectors,
01:05an opportunity that the private sector won't pass up, in his opinion.
01:10There's a sense when you look at it that some of those projects, obviously,
01:13I can't see the government themselves actively seeking finance to do it.
01:18Maybe they will, you know, they will look at public-private partnerships.
01:22Let me look at, you know, despite our challenging circumstances over the last, you know, couple years, I would say,
01:29property development has really boomed in a sense.
01:33We've seen many new malls coming up.
01:34We've seen things that are happening.
01:36So I believe that the interests or the parties, the commercial parties, businesses, companies that are part of this whole property development
01:45have been, for the last couple of years, no doubt they may be looking on and thinking,
01:50well, they have an opportunity if the government provides the land and that sort of thing.
01:55Among the numerous plans laid out by the government, there are two in particular that Charon thinks are easily deliverable.
02:00The Mearo to San Fernando Highway, which can promote productivity in the area,
02:04and the Carrera Island Project, which he thinks can become a great tourist attraction, benefiting multiple sectors.
02:11The second thing is Carrera.
02:13I mean, I really like the idea of Carrera.
02:16If the prison is decommissioned, as it were, the idea of an island prison, a tropical island prison,
02:22is one that has some interest tourist-wise, I believe, even for local tourism,
02:27the development of the island, both for local boating sector, as it were, for yachties.
02:34I could see tours going to Carrera.
02:37I could see, you know, turning it into something similar to no man's land with food and vendors and so on.
02:44Charon reiterated that even though it's not blue skies yet,
02:48the vision of the revitalization plans is what is important as the country looks to move forward.
