As the government seeks ways to diversify the economy, the creative industry is stepping forward, with claims that one initiative could earn millions in foreign exchange. Rynessa Cutting has more from the People's Roundtable discussion.
00:00Local creatives are calling on the government to capitalize on TNT's rich culture and heritage fiscal 2026,
00:08with promises of millions in foreign exchange to be generated through the creation of a national heritage warehouse,
00:15showcasing local pictures, artwork, fashions, costumes and the like.
00:20A warehouse facility for the proper storage and curation of the national collection where we could bring together all the archaeologists, curators and preservationists in one spot to be able to look after those things.
00:37And that warehouse itself could be converted into a destination for the country, for people to come and witness these things and those kinds of things.
00:46That facility alone could generate up to $60 million in our estimations and over 300,000 unique visitors annually.
00:57He's also stressing the need for government to push a buy local support local campaign that goes beyond farmers and craft markets.
01:08His comments came during the People's Roundtable pre-budget forum.
01:12Moving outwards to the local content quotas, 50% local content quotas in radio and television for the ignition of the local film and music economy so that it can get the cachet to be able to graduate to international levels.
01:35Also speaking was the president of the Scrap Iron Dealers Association, who's calling for state-funded, community-based enterprises.
01:57If they spend some more time trying to work with the community to get people employed, what it will do is to bring down the crime rate.
02:10You could give them the chance to open a shoe factory or even a place where a garment factory because we have a lot of tailors and centrists in this country that could contribute a lot for the nurses, the police, the customer officers.
02:27And we could talk about the teachers, where they could get their shoes for the teachers, where they could get their shoes for the police, the army men, and work in this way for the community.
02:37Because we have a lot of talented people in these communities.
