00:00My hope I cannot measure, my heart to life is free, my Saviour hath my treasure, and he will walk

00:17with me.

00:22So starting, Hebrews chapter 1, and we'll read the first four verses of chapter 1.

00:33Long ago, of many times, and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets.

00:43But in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all

00:51things, through whom also he created the world.

00:56He is the radiance of the glory of God, and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the

01:06universe by the word of his power.

01:10After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as

01:20much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

01:29Then the writer goes on speaking about various aspects of that superiority Christ has to the angels.

01:37Then going on to verse 13, and reading through into chapter 2.

01:43So verse 13 of chapter 1.

01:47And to which of the angels has he ever said,

01:51Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?

01:59Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

02:09Therefore, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

02:19For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution,

02:31how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

02:38It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,

02:46while God also bore witness by signs and wonders, and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed

02:57according to his will.

03:00For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking.

03:08It has been testified somewhere.

03:11What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that you care for him?

03:19You made him a little lower, for a little while, lower than the angels.

03:26You have crowned him with glory and honour, putting everything in subjection under his feet.

03:35Now, in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control.

03:45At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him, but we see him who for a little

03:54while was made lower than the angels,

03:57namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death,

04:03so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

04:11For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory,

04:21should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

04:27For he who sanctifies, and those who are sanctified, all have one source.

04:34That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying,

04:39I will tell of your name to my brothers.

04:43In the midst of the congregation, I will sing your praise.

04:47I was just thinking of the state of the world and all the various things that are happening at the

04:55moment.

04:56We have international conflict, we have conflict in Russia and Ukraine,

05:01we have conflict in Israel and the Middle East.

05:05World leaders, who sometimes seem to act in a totally irrational way,

05:12can be a frightening way, which they carry on, the way they speak, the way they treat each other.

05:18We have conflict in this country between various classes of people.

05:22We have conflicts in families, we have all sorts of conflicts going on.

05:28We have a government, we are thankful for the government, but the government often brings in,

05:33or proposes legislation that we feel, well that can't be right.

05:38It may trouble us, and we are very concerned about it.

05:42The way children are treated, the way they are brought up nowadays.

05:45Very challenging times we live in.

05:48We each have our individual thoughts about various things.

05:52We might not absolutely agree with each other perhaps on what we think about things.

05:57I was thinking, what does God think about things?

06:02What does he think about things?

06:05I remember somebody said, it was quoted to me years ago,

06:10and he said that God's thoughts are full of Christ.

06:18That Christ is the centre of all God's thoughts.

06:25Now that doesn't mean that God doesn't think about us, or think about the various things perhaps in the world,

06:33and what's going on.

06:35But first and foremost, his thoughts are about Christ.

06:40And then, his thoughts about everything else, they fit in.

06:49They find their place in relation to God's thoughts about Christ.

06:58Now, how do we know God's thoughts are full of Christ?

07:02Well, the scripture tells us that, in Colossians, it says that in Christ, all the fullness of God was pleased

07:11to dwell.

07:12That's what God thinks of Christ.

07:16How does that then impact on what God thinks about us?

07:23What he thinks about what's going on in the world?

07:25What he thinks about things generally?

07:28I've just come up with a few things that God does think about.

07:33What about men and women generally?

07:37Well, we know that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

07:43that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

07:48So, for men, women, children generally, mankind generally, there's a very important question that has to be asked.

08:01And it was a question that was asked by Pilate, the Roman governor.

08:08And he said, what then shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ?

08:18And that is a question that every one of us, every man, woman and child needs to ask.

08:26What will I do with Jesus, who is called Christ?

08:31As far as mankind generally is concerned, in God's thoughts, Christ is the centre.

08:38And it's what?

08:38What are we going to do about him?

08:40That's what interests God.

08:42What about people who obstinately and persistently refuse to think about Jesus?

08:51Or if they do, they reject him.

08:53What are God's thoughts about them?

08:56Well, that's a very solemn subject.

09:00But God's word says that they will have to meet Jesus as judge.

09:08The Lord Jesus himself said, the farmer judges no one who has given all judgment to the Son.

09:15We read in the book of Acts that God has appointed a day on which he will judge the world

09:23in righteousness by the man whom he has appointed.

09:28He has given assurance of this to all by raising him from the dead.

09:33There's no doubt about who he's talking about.

09:35It's the one that God raised from the dead.

09:36That's Jesus, the Christ.

09:38So that's the position of those who persist in unbelief.

09:43Their relation to Christ.

09:46What about believers?

09:48All of us here, I'm sure, this evening.

09:51What's our relationship?

09:53Well, the scripture says that we've been accepted in the beloved.

09:58That's God receives us because we're in Christ.

10:03He takes us into his full favour.

10:07Absolute, no Hallsberg.

10:10Full favour because we're in Christ.

10:14Not through any worth of ourselves, but because of the value of Christ.

10:18What about the church?

10:20The body of Christ.

10:21The body that is made up of every believer.

10:27Well, scripture speaks of us as being united to Christ as his bride.

10:33Couldn't get closer than that, could you?

10:36What about God's ancient people, Israel?

10:40What are his thoughts about them?

10:42Well, in the New Testament, we read that all Israel, that's the true Israel.

10:49Not necessarily all those who can trace their genealogy back to Abraham or whatever.

10:55But the true Israel, all Israel, will be saved.

10:58Because the deliverer will come out of Zion.

11:01Who's that deliverer?

11:03None other than their Messiah, the Christ.

11:06There's a lovely passage in Zechariah that speaks about this.

11:11It speaks about when God shows mercy and kindness to Israel.

11:18And it says,

11:21And I, that's God speaking,

11:23I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and

11:30pleas for mercy.

11:32So that when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him as one

11:40mourns for an only child.

11:43There's God's thoughts for Israel.

11:47They all take their place in relation to Christ.

11:50He's the one who they pierced.

11:53And they will mourn for him when they see who it is.

11:55But they'll do that when God has come in in grace.

11:58It's pouring out his spirit of grace upon them.

12:01Another one, creation.

12:03It's what's God's thought as regards to creation and its connection with Christ.

12:09We read in the beginning of that chapter, through who?

12:12Through Christ he also created the world.

12:15And we read in Colossians that it was all things recreated through him as Christ and for him.

12:25So it's God's thoughts for creation all linked to his thoughts about Christ.

12:33It's going to be brought into submission here.

12:37So God's thoughts are full of Christ.

12:41And that encompasses his thoughts about each one of us and all these various aspects that we've been thinking about.

12:50Esther and I have known someone.

12:52He was telling us a little time ago, when he was young, his father was seeking to encourage him to

12:59read a small portion of Scripture every day.

13:02It's necessary. We need it. It's for our blessing.

13:06And he said something like, he said, when you read your portion, he said, wherever it is, whether it comes

13:13to the New Testament or the Old Testament.

13:16He said, don't put your Bible away until you've found something of Christ in the portion you've read.

13:26Old Testament as well as New Testament.

13:31So we might ask, well, some portions of the Old Testament, well, that's a bit difficult to find Christ there.

13:39But I just wanted to pick out a few instances where they're perhaps more obvious.

13:46Right near the beginning of Genesis, chapter three, a very well-known passage where after the fall, God is speaking

13:54to Satan.

13:54And he says, I will put enmity between you, Satan, and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring.

14:04He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.

14:09Who's that speaking of? Who's God speaking about?

14:13We have no doubt. That's Christ.

14:16What about, if we go back a chapter, to Genesis 2, this is before the fall.

14:26God made the man, shown man all the other creatures in his creation, put them under his dominion.

14:34As he says, it's not good for a man to be alone. Adam couldn't find, amongst all the creatures, a

14:41suitable helper, companion.

14:45So, as we know, Adam, God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam. Adam's body, he formed the woman.

14:53He brought the woman to Adam.

14:55And Adam says, this at last is bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh. She shall be called woman,

15:01because she was taken out of man.

15:03Well, what a picture there, of Christ and the church.

15:09Christ went down deeper than a deep sleep. He went down into death itself. And out of his death, he

15:19came out of the tomb.

15:21He ascended back to heaven. The Holy Spirit was sent down. And the church was formed. His bride.

15:30I have no doubt that God had that in mind when this was recorded and the Holy Spirit records it.

15:37I think in confirmation of that, Paul speaks in Ephesians of man and woman and Christ of the church.

15:46And he links it to the church. I think that God's thoughts back there. There's Christ in chapter 2.

15:53Chapter 1, verse 16. God made two great lights. The greater light to rule the day and the lesser light

16:01to rule the night.

16:03The sun and the moon. Then the Lord Jesus was here. He said, I'm the light of the world.

16:09He was like the sun shining around when he was there. And it was day when he was here. Even

16:15though there was much darkness, it was day.

16:18Because he speaks when he's going to go and it's going to be night time. He's rather like the sun.

16:25The moon. Well, the moon shines at night time. How we should be as Christians, as the body of Christ

16:33in this dark world.

16:35It's night time. We know that. Paul says the night is far spent. Soon the day to come.

16:40But shouldn't we be like that? That we should be so, have our attention fixed on Christ that we reflect

16:51his light to the world around who are in darkness.

16:54If we allow the world to obscure our view of Christ, we won't be such a bright light and a

17:04help to those who are in darkness of the world.

17:06When the Lord was on the Mount of Transfiguration. And his glory shone like the brightness of the sun. And

17:16with him were Moses and Elijah.

17:21But then Peter, he always put the blame on Peter. He didn't know what he was saying, but he said,

17:27Can we make a booth or a shelter for you and for Moses at last?

17:32Immediately, God intervenes. But it's as if what Peter was suggesting, it would have caused just a slight eclipse of

17:43the sun.

17:44That something would have got in the way. The full brightness of it wouldn't have shone through.

17:50Genesis one starts off with the words in the beginning. God created the heavens and the earth.

17:58But when we come to look at what's written in Ephesians chapter one, verse four.

18:09It says he, that's God, shows us in Christ, in him, before the foundation of the world.

18:19So I think my point is that there's Christ in the Old Testament.

18:22But God's thoughts about Christ went back before the Old Testament.

18:27And what's even more amazing is that he's included us in those thoughts. Wonderful grace.

18:35But Paul speaks somewhere about Christ being all in all. And I'm probably taking this out of context.

18:43But I feel that can be used as a way to describe Christ in the scriptures.

18:49He's all and in all. All the scriptures are about him and he's in all the scriptures.

18:55I think this is confirmed when the Lord Jesus walked with those two on the road to Emmaus.

19:01They didn't recognize him. He said, it speaks of him, he said, he interpreted it to them.

19:08In all the scriptures, the things concerning himself.

19:13I just find that so amazing. They want to send him on a walk.

19:16And we don't know at what point he joined them.

19:19But in that relatively short time, he interpreted it to them.

19:23He opened it up, explained it to them. In all the scriptures, the things concerning himself.

19:30How did he do that? How could they take it in?

19:32It's a bit like the woman at the well, the Samaritan woman. Do you remember?

19:35She had a brief conversation with the Lord. Then she goes away.

19:40And she said, come and see a man who told me all that I've ever done.

19:46How could she say that? In the end, it was true.

19:48He convicted her. She could tell that he knew all about her.

19:51As further confirmation, we have the beginning of John's Gospel.

19:55In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was with God. And the Word was God.

20:05He was with God in the beginning. And who's the Word?

20:11John explains later on, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. It's past.

20:17So, he is the Word. Another one, when the Pharisees and the Jews were questioning the Lord Jesus.

20:25And at one point, they said to him, who are you?

20:31And he replied, just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.

20:38The first thing I came and talked to you, and I introduced myself.

20:40I said, I'm David Wells. I told you why I've come.

20:43I repeated my name, gave me a little bit of background, and I went on and on and on and

20:47off.

20:48And then you said, who are you?

20:50I might, in exasperation, say, what have I been telling you?

20:55But I don't think that's what the Lord Jesus was saying there.

20:59They were heart of heart and wouldn't believe.

21:03He was saying more than that.

21:05He was saying that everything he'd said, he was.

21:13And everything he is, he said.

21:17So, we can say he is the Word.

21:19That the Word become flesh.

21:21He's everything.

21:23Now, if we can just have a look at those verses in Hebrews.

21:26There's a wonderful quote there from the Old Testament.

21:31Comes from Psalm 8.

21:34In the context, as we know, the writer is writing to Hebrew Christians.

21:40Christians who came from a Jewish background.

21:44They were suffering because of their faith.

21:47Suffering particularly from their fellow Jews who were underbeamers.

21:53And we have that opening passage in the second chapter.

21:58Where it says, how shall we escape?

22:00If we neglect so great salvation.

22:04The Jews had the law given to them.

22:07And that was delivered by angels.

22:12But we have a salvation.

22:14That was declared at first was by the Lord.

22:18By the Lord himself.

22:19He didn't delegate to angels.

22:22He did it himself.

22:23And then through his apostles.

22:26And by the signs and powers of the Holy Spirit.

22:31For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come.

22:36Of which we are speaking.

22:37It has been testified somewhere.

22:39What is man that you are mindful of him?

22:43Or the son of man that you care for him?

22:47Now if we just stop there.

22:48I'm not a scholar.

22:50I don't know Hebrew.

22:52But I understand that the word in the original psalm.

22:57Which was written in Hebrew.

22:59The word for man.

23:01What is man?

23:04Is Enosh.

23:07And that apparently signifies man looked at as frail.

23:14A mortal being.

23:15A failing being.

23:18When it goes on to say.

23:20Or the son of man.

23:22The word man there is different.

23:25It's Adam.

23:26Well.

23:28Now Adam.

23:29As we know.

23:30Was the first man.

23:32And he was.

23:34Created by God.

23:35In God's own image.

23:38We know what happened.

23:41Afterwards.

23:42But he was created by God.

23:44In his own image.

23:47Paul Stigliano pointed this out to me.

23:49Some little time ago.

23:51That when you come to the genealogy.

23:53Or the list of names.

23:55Adam and his descendants.

23:58Adam had a son called Seth.

24:01And the scripture says.

24:04That we know.

24:05Adam had been created in the likeness of God.

24:07Adam.

24:08Fathered a son.

24:09In his own likeness.

24:11So.

24:12Seth.

24:13Took on the likeness of.

24:15Fallen Adam.

24:17Whereas Adam had been created.

24:19In the image of God.

24:22Then if you.

24:24Follow on the generations.

24:25They go down.

24:26To come to Noah.

24:28And Noah and his three sons.

24:30And we're all descended from them.

24:32And we.

24:34Like Seth.

24:36Have inherited.

24:38The fallen nature.

24:40Not.

24:41As a result.

24:42Of the fall.

24:44By nature.

24:44We're.

24:45Enosh.

24:46Rather than.

24:47Adam.

24:48When we come to.

24:49Or the son of man.

24:51Adam.

24:52I think it's clear.

24:54That it's speaking about.

24:56Jesus.

24:56Not.

24:58Mankind generally.

24:59As it was.

25:00When it says.

25:01What is man.

25:02That you are mindful of him.

25:05When Adam was created.

25:07God.

25:07Well.

25:07As we.

25:08Thought.

25:09He.

25:10Placed.

25:10Everything.

25:11Under his dominion.

25:13But.

25:14Because of the fall.

25:15Adam.

25:16Forfeited.

25:17That dominion.

25:18We're in the same position.

25:20By nature.

25:23And.

25:23But then.

25:23We come to the Lord Jesus.

25:25If he's the son of man.

25:27The son of Adam.

25:28How does.

25:29That fit in.

25:30Because.

25:31He's never.

25:32Been.

25:32Tainted.

25:33With.

25:33Any sin.

25:34There was no sin.

25:35In him.

25:36Not only did he not sin.

25:37But he didn't inherit.

25:39A sinful nature.

25:40And yet.

25:41I think the clue is.

25:43That.

25:43It says.

25:44That he was the.

25:45Son of Adam.

25:47And then.

25:48Adam.

25:48The son of God.

25:49God.

25:50So.

25:52Jesus.

25:53Takes.

25:55Lightness.

25:55From.

25:56His.

25:56Position.

25:57As a man.

25:59In the.

25:59Unfallen.

26:00State.

26:02Adam.

26:02Before.

26:03The fall.

26:05But.

26:05He's more than that.

26:07Adam.

26:08Before.

26:08The fall.

26:09Was.

26:10Innocent.

26:11He'd never sinned.

26:12But he was also.

26:13Innocent.

26:13In the.

26:14Sense.

26:15That he didn't know.

26:16Right from wrong.

26:19To do.

26:19Is to obey.

26:20The one command.

26:20Not to eat.

26:21That fruit.

26:22But the Lord Jesus.

26:24Is more than innocent.

26:25He's righteous.

26:27He.

26:27Has.

26:28Fulfilled.

26:29The righteousness.

26:30Of God.

26:30He's a righteous man.

26:32But he's.

26:33Absolutely righteous.

26:34When he was here.

26:36Everything he did.

26:38Everything he said.

26:41Everything he did.

26:44Was absolutely.

26:46And perfectly.

26:47Pleasing to God.

26:48He was righteous.

26:48God's righteous one.

26:50So therefore.

26:51He.

26:51Hasn't.

26:52Forfeited.

26:53His right.

26:54To a dominion.

26:54Over the creation.

26:56Like.

26:57Adam.

26:57Forfeited it.

26:59It's interesting.

27:00When.

27:00God speaks.

27:02To Adam.

27:02Before the fall.

27:03He says.

27:05In the promises.

27:06Fill the earth.

27:07And subdue it.

27:07And have dominion.

27:09Over the fish of the sea.

27:10And over the birds of the heavens.

27:13And over every living thing.

27:14That moves on the earth.

27:15The earth.

27:16When you come to Psalm 8.

27:19Which is speaking prophetically.

27:21Of the Lord Jesus.

27:22It says.

27:23You.

27:23That's God.

27:24You have put all things under his feet.

27:27All sheep.

27:28And oxen.

27:29And also the beasts of the field.

27:31The birds of the heavens.

27:33And the fish of the sea.

27:34Whatever passes through the path of the sea.

27:37There's rather like.

27:38A restoration of.

27:40It quotes the psalm.

27:41Up to the point.

27:42At verse 8.

27:43Where it says.

27:44Putting everything in subjection.

27:45Under his feet.

27:46Then it says.

27:48Now.

27:49In putting everything in subjection.

27:51To him.

27:51He left.

27:53Nothing.

27:54Outside his control.

27:56So.

27:57If you think about it.

27:59The dominion.

28:00That God promised to Adam.

28:02He.

28:03Defined it.

28:05As.

28:06The various sayings.

28:07The birds of the heavens.

28:08Etc.

28:08But here in.

28:10Hebrews.

28:11The dominion.

28:12That the Lord Jesus.

28:13Is going to have.

28:14Has no limits.

28:15Natively.

28:16It said.

28:17Nothing.

28:19Is outside his control.

28:21It's.

28:21Inferno more expansive.

28:23Than the dominion.

28:24That Adam would have had.

28:25If he kept.

28:26His first estate.

28:29And yet.

28:30We have.

28:30In this chapter.

28:32We have.

28:33The fact.

28:35That.

28:36God.

28:37Has a principle.

28:38That.

28:39Suffering.

28:40Proceeds.

28:40Glory.

28:41We have this.

28:42In verse.

28:43Nine.

28:44We see.

28:45Him.

28:45Who.

28:46For a little while.

28:47Was made.

28:48Than the angels.

28:49Namely.

28:49Jesus.

28:50Crowned.

28:50With glory.

28:51And honor.

28:52Because.

28:52Of the suffering.

28:53Of death.

28:54So.

28:55That.

28:55By the grace.

28:56Of God.

28:56He might.

28:57Taste death.

28:58For everyone.

29:00He had.

29:01To suffer.

29:02He had.

29:02To be made.

29:03Than the angels.

29:04In order.

29:04To taste death.

29:05The angels.

29:06Don't die.

29:07They're not mortal.

29:08Like us.

29:09He had.

29:10To go.

29:11Than the angels.

29:12We might say.

29:12He had.

29:13To be made.

29:13Inferior.

29:14To the angels.

29:15Even though.

29:16As we read.

29:16In the first chapter.

29:18He's superior.

29:19To the angels.

29:20Of course.

29:20He is.

29:20The angels.

29:21But he took.

29:22That lonely place.

29:23And he took.

29:23And it involves.

29:24Suffering.

29:26Now.

29:26The amazing thing is.

29:29That.

29:30At the end of our passage.

29:31We read.

29:32How we.

29:33Are associated.

29:34With him.

29:36He.

29:37Who sanctifies.

29:38And those.

29:38Who are sanctified.

29:39All have one source.

29:42The Lord Jesus.

29:44Suffered.

29:45Then he entered.

29:46Into his glory.

29:47And we're going to be.

29:48Associated with him.

29:49But both.

29:50We have to go through.

29:51The suffering first.

29:52Then we're going to be.

29:53Associated with him.

29:54In glory.

29:56At present.

29:57We do not see.

29:58Everything.

29:58As subjection to him.

30:00Well.

30:00Might say.

30:01That's a bit of an understatement.

30:02Isn't it?

30:02When you look around.

30:03The world today.

30:04What a mess it is.

30:05There's no.

30:06Outward.

30:06Subjection to him.

30:07People.

30:08Ignore him.

30:09Deny his existence.

30:12But.

30:12We.

30:13By faith.

30:14While we're here.

30:17We can see him.

30:18Crown.

30:19With glory.

30:20In honor.

30:21He tasted death.

30:23For everyone.

30:23Wonderful thought that.

30:25And.

30:26You might say.

30:27I think.

30:27Romans makes this clear.

30:28But.

30:29The gospel of God's grace.

30:31Is there.

30:32For the taking.

30:32It can be preached.

30:33To anybody.

30:35But.

30:36We've got to take it.

30:37And.

30:38Then.

30:38When we take it.

30:39Romans.

30:40I think it says.

30:41The righteousness of God.

30:42Through faith.

30:43In Jesus Christ.

30:44To all.

30:45That's the gospel.

30:47But.

30:47On.

30:48All who believe.

30:49And so.

30:51We need to accept him as saviour.

30:53And.

30:54As.

30:55Belonging to him.
