00:16we've no less days to sing God's praise, and when we first begun.
00:35Good evening, it's good to be with you again, and tonight we're going to start with Psalm 77.
00:44I cried out to God for help. I cried out to God to hear me.
00:50When I was in distress, I sought the Lord. At night, I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not
00:59be comforted.
01:01I remembered you, God, and groaned. I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.
01:09You kept my eyes from closing. I was too troubled to speak.
01:15I thought about the former days, the years long ago. I remembered my songs in the night.
01:22But my heart meditated, and my spirit asked,
01:27Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favour again?
01:34Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
01:38Has his promise failed at all time?
01:42Has God forgotten to be merciful?
01:46Has he in anger withheld his compassion?
01:52Then I thought,
01:53To this I will appeal,
01:56The years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.

02:11And meditate on all your mighty deeds.

02:19What God is as great as our God?
02:22You are the God who performs miracles.
02:26You display your power among the peoples.
02:30With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,
02:34The descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
02:38The waters saw you, O God.
02:41The waters saw you and writhed.
02:43The very depths were convulsed.
02:46The clouds poured down water.
02:49The heavens resounded with thunder.
02:53Your arrows flashed back and forth.
02:57Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind.
03:00Your lightning lit up the world.
03:03The earth trembled and quaked.
03:06Your path led through the sea.
03:09Your way through the mighty waters.
03:12Though your footprints were not seen.
03:16You led your people like a flock
03:19By the hand of Moses and Aaron.
03:25This is a psalm of Asaph.
03:28One of the writers of many of the psalms.
03:32And in some ways it's perhaps just a
03:36compact version of the book of Job.
03:39It's somebody who is troubled deeply.
03:44He seems to be in great difficulty.
03:48And he's wondering why God will not be there to help him.
03:53He's in despair really.
03:57But then he remembers the way that God has blessed him
04:01And his people in the past.
04:04But the last part from verse 16 onwards
04:08Is very much a reflection
04:09Isn't it?
04:10Of the passage that we'll be reading
04:12Or we won't actually be reading
04:14But we'll be thinking about later
04:15From Job chapter 36
04:18Where God appears
04:22Begins to come to appear
04:24To Job
04:26And while we think of God
04:28As being a God of light
04:30We often find that God
04:32Clouds himself
04:34In thick dark clouds
04:37So that his glory
04:38Cannot be seen
04:40Because it is so overwhelming

04:43Where he came down
04:45In thick cloud
04:47And there was lightning and thunder
04:49And God came down
04:51On the mountain there
04:52And it's very much the same
04:54That we will see
04:55As God comes to speak

05:55By the name of Elihu
05:57So we'll be thinking

06:06Pay attention
06:07To everything I say
06:09I am about to open my mouth
06:12My words are on the tip of my tongue
06:14My words come from an upright heart
06:18My lips sincerely speak what I know
06:21The Spirit of God has made me
06:25The breath of the Almighty gives me life
06:30Answer me then
06:31If you can
06:32Stand up and argue
06:34Your case before me
06:36I am the same as you
06:38In God's sight
06:39I too am a piece of clay

07:57On a bed of pain

08:00So that their body finds food repulsive
08:04And their soul loathes the choicest meal
08:08Their flesh wastes away to nothing
08:11And their bones, once hidden
08:14Now stick out
08:16They draw near to the pit
08:18And their life to the messengers of death
08:22Yet if there is an angel at their side
08:24A messenger
08:25One out of a thousand
08:28Sent to tell them how to be upright
08:30And he is gracious to that person
08:33And says to God
08:35Spare them from going down to the pit
08:37I have found a ransom for them
08:40Let their flesh be renewed like a child's
08:43Let them be restored
08:45As in the days of their youth
08:47Then that person can pray to God
08:50And find favour with him
08:51They will see God's face
08:54And shout for joy
08:55He will restore them to full well-being
08:59And they will go to others and say
09:02I have sinned
09:04And I have perverted what is right
09:06But I did not get what I deserved
09:09God has delivered me from going down to the pit
09:12And I shall live to enjoy the light of life
09:16God does all these things to a person
09:19Twice, even three times
09:21To turn them back from the pit
09:24That the light of life may shine on them
09:28Pay attention Job
09:29Be silent and I will speak
09:33If you have anything to say, answer me
09:37Speak up, for I want to vindicate you
09:40But if not, then listen to me
09:43Be silent and I will teach you wisdom
09:46The book of Job is an intriguing book
09:49It deals with difficult issues of suffering and loss
09:54But it also deals with the
09:57Wrestles with the problem of truth and lies
10:03We believe that the Bible is true
10:08But not everything in the Bible is true
10:10Now before I get drummed out of the church
10:13Let me explain with an easy example
10:17In Genesis chapter 3, Satan comes and tempts Eve
10:22Initially, he tests Eve with a deceitful question
10:27But in verses 4 to 5, Satan, disguised as a snake
10:33Speaks a direct lie
10:36You will not certainly die, the snake said to the woman
10:39For God knows that when you eat from it
10:42Your eyes will be opened
10:44And you will be like God
10:46Knowing good and evil
10:50So this is, at the same time
10:52Both truth and lie
10:56It's true that Satan said this
10:58But he spoke lies
11:01Eve did not become like God
11:03When she ate the forbidden fruit
11:06And as a punishment for her rebellion
11:09Against God's command
11:10She died
11:13And the book of Job
11:15Presents a similar problem
11:18It's full of truth
11:20Half-truth
11:21And lies
11:23The problem is distinguishing between them
11:26And of course, we live in a world
11:29With a similar problem
11:32The book of Job is classified as wisdom literature
11:36In the Bible
11:37But it demands a great deal of wisdom
11:40To understand it
11:41It is not an easy book to get to grips with
11:45And today we're looking at the section
11:48From Job 32 to chapter 37
11:51But to understand them
11:53We need to unlock them
11:55Using the keys found at the beginning
11:58And the end of the book
12:02In Job chapters 1 and 2
12:04God challenges Satan
12:06To consider Job
12:07A man of righteousness
12:10But Satan's view of Job
12:13Is that Job only serves God
12:15Because God has blessed Job abundantly
12:18Satan argues
12:20Take away the blessings
12:22And Job will curse you
12:26God permits Satan to test Job
12:29By taking away
12:32His goods
12:33His children
12:35His health
12:36And by using his wife
12:39And his friends
12:40To attack him
12:45So the really big question
12:47So the really big question
12:48In this book
12:48Raises
12:49Is
12:52But something which is never really
12:54Addressed directly
12:56Is
12:56Why does God allow Satan
12:59To bring suffering
13:01And torment
13:02And torment
13:03To Job
13:04Now we will not get
13:06An answer to that question today
13:08But it is a question
13:10That you need to address
13:11By the time that you get
13:13To the end of the book
13:15But we may start to get there
13:19Even if you haven't started
13:21To see the point yet
