There needs to be a change.
00:01
Like, there needs to be something to change.
00:03
Like, this can't be okay, like you two were saying, Joel,
00:06
where every team goes through this.
00:08
No, they don't go through this three years in a row of this bad stretch
00:12
in that key part of the season.
00:13
And I'm at a point as a Yankees fan, I feel like, I don't know, Joel,
00:17
if it's going to be 23 where this team really isn't that good
00:20
and they're not going to make any damage in the playoffs,
00:22
or if this is going to be like last year, we can turn it around
00:25
and we can make a run to the World Series and then we'll see what happens.
00:29
I don't know, I don't have a good read on this team
00:31
and I don't know which way to lean.
00:33
I don't know if you have a certain way of feeling of how they can make
00:37
their way through the rest of the season and where they're going.
00:40
Yeah, so there's a lot there.
00:42
First of all, you have to be careful about overreacting.
00:45
This is a very good team that is the defending American League champion.
00:50
And I think, and you and I have kind of, until this bad stretch,
00:54
thought that they had put together a better 26-man roster this year
00:58
than they had last year going to it.
01:00
And I still think that there's a very good offensive team in there
01:03
that kind of like has been in this strange period for three weeks
01:07
where for half of the three weeks they didn't score.
01:10
And then in these, like the back end,
01:13
like they just kept missing opportunities to blow a game open
01:16
when their bullpen really needed them to blow some game was open.
01:19
Okay, so I think there's that.
01:20
If I was looking for commonality, and I know if we had Aaron Boone on here,
01:25
he would argue with me about this.
01:28
I feel like the Yankees get worse technically and fundamentally as the season goes along.
01:34
That's been the common thread these last few years.
01:37
Now, the easiest thing to say is that Aaron Boone is like kind of pally with the players
01:44
and doesn't demand enough of the group.
01:48
And if you want to have that theory, it's fine.
01:52
I do think if I were in charge, if I were Hal Steinberg or Brian Cashman,
01:57
I would say, look, this has happened three years in a row
02:01
where it feels like we hit a certain point at about 70, 80 games
02:05
where the team kind of gets mentally tired about doing fundamental stuff right over and over.
02:11
Because this is something you and I have talked about over and over for a year plus,
02:15
which is to be a good fundamental player is to do the routine, the boring,
02:20
with passion and energy and technical expertise over and over again.
02:25
And it's easier not to do it than to do it.
02:29
And the best players, and I would point out that the Yankees brought in two players like this.
02:35
I think Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger are exceptional at this.
02:38
And of course, they won a game yesterday in part because Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt
02:42
are technically excellent defensive players.
02:45
And they made not only superb plays, but the right plays, aware plays, right?
02:49
Bellinger comes up throwing to first to get a double play.
02:53
Goldschmidt sees that Mauricio has jumped off first base and understands.
02:56
Tag him, then get to the bag.
02:58
Don't create the rundown play if you don't have to.
03:01
So like that happening yesterday is a reminder that they do have a couple of guys
03:06
they added this year who don't get exhausted doing things right over and over and over again.
03:12
To me, like yesterday was a day where I would sit and say,
03:16
well, Trent Grisham kind of drifted into a ball over his head.
03:19
He came in and didn't feel the ball cleanly, which is a physical error.
03:23
Maybe anybody makes it, but he made it, right?
03:26
And I just feel like Boone is probably not a riot act manager.
03:35
Aaron Judge is probably not a riot act captain.
03:40
And these are moments where I always feel that the Yankees have never fully replaced
03:48
Brett Gardner and CeCe Sabathia, who I thought were wartime consigliaries to steal from the
03:54
godfather.
03:54
Like I thought that they were guys who knew how to go up and say,
04:00
this is unacceptable with some strictness.
04:03
And I do think a lot of this always has to come from the players.
04:05
And I don't know that they have, and by the way, this might just be modern baseball or
04:11
modern sports.
04:12
I don't know that accountability is great in our sport.
04:15
I think we think so little of the fundamental stuff now.
04:19
And we think about, you know, watching the iPad, launch angle, and all the things that are
04:25
really, really, really vital to winning.
04:27
But to me, the fundamentals are the grout of winning.
04:32
Like you need to make sure, like if you want the tiles to stay in place, you've got to be
04:36
good technically.
04:37
And I feel like the Yankees get mentally exhausted or like they just can't run the full
04:44
marathon as a technical team.
04:46
They're fatigued.
04:46
They're fatigued, Joel.
04:48
Yeah.
04:48
Yeah.
04:49
Yeah.
05:16
Yeah.
05:17
Yeah.
05:18
Yeah.
05:18
Yeah.
