00:00There needs to be a change.
00:01Like, there needs to be something to change.
00:03Like, this can't be okay, like you two were saying, Joel,
00:06where every team goes through this.
00:08No, they don't go through this three years in a row of this bad stretch
00:12in that key part of the season.
00:13And I'm at a point as a Yankees fan, I feel like, I don't know, Joel,
00:17if it's going to be 23 where this team really isn't that good
00:20and they're not going to make any damage in the playoffs,
00:22or if this is going to be like last year, we can turn it around
00:25and we can make a run to the World Series and then we'll see what happens.
00:29I don't know, I don't have a good read on this team
00:31and I don't know which way to lean.
00:33I don't know if you have a certain way of feeling of how they can make
00:37their way through the rest of the season and where they're going.
00:40Yeah, so there's a lot there.
00:42First of all, you have to be careful about overreacting.
00:45This is a very good team that is the defending American League champion.
00:50And I think, and you and I have kind of, until this bad stretch,
00:54thought that they had put together a better 26-man roster this year
00:58than they had last year going to it.
01:00And I still think that there's a very good offensive team in there
01:03that kind of like has been in this strange period for three weeks
01:07where for half of the three weeks they didn't score.
01:10And then in these, like the back end,
01:13like they just kept missing opportunities to blow a game open
01:16when their bullpen really needed them to blow some game was open.
01:19Okay, so I think there's that.
01:20If I was looking for commonality, and I know if we had Aaron Boone on here,
01:25he would argue with me about this.
01:28I feel like the Yankees get worse technically and fundamentally as the season goes along.
01:34That's been the common thread these last few years.
01:37Now, the easiest thing to say is that Aaron Boone is like kind of pally with the players
01:44and doesn't demand enough of the group.
01:48And if you want to have that theory, it's fine.
01:52I do think if I were in charge, if I were Hal Steinberg or Brian Cashman,
01:57I would say, look, this has happened three years in a row
02:01where it feels like we hit a certain point at about 70, 80 games
02:05where the team kind of gets mentally tired about doing fundamental stuff right over and over.
02:11Because this is something you and I have talked about over and over for a year plus,
02:15which is to be a good fundamental player is to do the routine, the boring,
02:20with passion and energy and technical expertise over and over again.
02:25And it's easier not to do it than to do it.
02:29And the best players, and I would point out that the Yankees brought in two players like this.
02:35I think Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger are exceptional at this.
02:38And of course, they won a game yesterday in part because Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt
02:42are technically excellent defensive players.
02:45And they made not only superb plays, but the right plays, aware plays, right?
02:49Bellinger comes up throwing to first to get a double play.
02:53Goldschmidt sees that Mauricio has jumped off first base and understands.
02:56Tag him, then get to the bag.
02:58Don't create the rundown play if you don't have to.
03:01So like that happening yesterday is a reminder that they do have a couple of guys
03:06they added this year who don't get exhausted doing things right over and over and over again.
03:12To me, like yesterday was a day where I would sit and say,
03:16well, Trent Grisham kind of drifted into a ball over his head.
03:19He came in and didn't feel the ball cleanly, which is a physical error.
03:23Maybe anybody makes it, but he made it, right?
03:26And I just feel like Boone is probably not a riot act manager.
03:35Aaron Judge is probably not a riot act captain.
03:40And these are moments where I always feel that the Yankees have never fully replaced
03:48Brett Gardner and CeCe Sabathia, who I thought were wartime consigliaries to steal from the
03:54godfather.
03:54Like I thought that they were guys who knew how to go up and say,
04:00this is unacceptable with some strictness.
04:03And I do think a lot of this always has to come from the players.
04:05And I don't know that they have, and by the way, this might just be modern baseball or
04:11modern sports.
04:12I don't know that accountability is great in our sport.
04:15I think we think so little of the fundamental stuff now.
04:19And we think about, you know, watching the iPad, launch angle, and all the things that are
04:25really, really, really vital to winning.
04:27But to me, the fundamentals are the grout of winning.
04:32Like you need to make sure, like if you want the tiles to stay in place, you've got to be
04:36good technically.
04:37And I feel like the Yankees get mentally exhausted or like they just can't run the full
04:44marathon as a technical team.
04:46They're fatigued.
04:46They're fatigued, Joel.
04:48Yeah.
04:48Yeah.
04:49Yeah.
05:16Yeah.
05:17Yeah.
05:18Yeah.
05:18Yeah.
