00:00Listen, the Yankees were on Munoz last week, the closer for the Mariners,
00:04and they put together a rally all year long, their best rally all year,
00:09in the ninth inning, and clearly Joel had his pitches.
00:13He was either tipping them or they knew what was coming,
00:16but you saw the signs at second base, guys like Cody Bellinger, Ben Rice,
00:21and others making this waving hand signal at second base to the batter
00:25right before the pitch, and they almost always were spitting on the slider,
00:32fastball they were on.
00:34So, Joel, you had seen something prior, and I'll toss it to you here.
00:39What did you make of that and what the Yankees have been able to do
00:41in getting the tipping of pitches?
00:44So I was at a day game on June 19th, Angels and the Yankees,
00:50and Aaron Judge is on second base, and Hector Norris is pitching,
00:53and I see him do this arm wave.
00:56Here, we got it here.
00:57We're showing it to folks.
01:00Norris drew four pitches.
01:02Two of them were splitters.
01:04Judge waves his arm like that circular thing twice.
01:08He also did it, and Norris stepped off and took a look at him
01:13because he clearly knew something was up, you know,
01:15because, like, Stanton spit on a couple of splitters in the count.
01:19And I turned to Greg Joyce, and I think Mark Sanchez was there,
01:24our colleagues at the post, and I said, Judge is signaling.
01:27He's got the pitches.
01:28I said, it's blatant.
01:30I said, but he's clearly signaling to him.
01:33But it was one batter, and, you know, it's like things happen,
01:35and I never thought about it again.
01:37And then I saw this, and I was like, oh, I've seen this before.
01:41So I went, and I hate to go all jombo here.
01:44This is his world, and I'm a junior contestant here.
01:50But just because I had seen it previously, I went to somebody with the Yankees,
01:55and I said, if I tell you what I think is going on, would you tell me if I'm right?
02:02And they kind of went, okay.
02:04And I said, because what I compared it to is, you're a fan of the movie Rounders?
02:09Yes.
02:10So it's the Oreo cookies with the John Malkovich character.
02:14It's so blatant, and he gives away the tell.
02:18In other words, like the Mikey D character, the Johnny Damon character says,
02:22like makes it obvious that he has his tell.
02:24The Yankees are so obvious that the other team has to – it's not subtle.
02:29It's not like – usually if you get the sign at second base,
02:32you'll do something like lean one way, you know, fastball, lean the other way.
02:35If you think it's a breaking ball, touch your belt buckle.
02:37Do something subtle that might look – this is obscene, right?
02:42Like this is – like everyone could see what you're doing, right?
02:46And so I said, they're getting it.
02:50Judge isn't seeing it, right?
02:52Because it's a splitter, either the first base coach is seeing it, right?
02:57Or a runner on first base is seeing it.
03:01And they're giving a signal, and there's not enough time to be subtle.
03:05Right.
03:05And do something like touch your belt buckle or lean this way.
03:08You're seeing it, and then you as quickly have to do this for the hitter,
03:12because the pitcher is now coming.
03:14So you can't – the hitter isn't going to see something subtle,
03:17but he is going to see a big hand motion.
03:20And I think that's what it was.
03:22And look, I think within the context of the game,
03:27like beyond the fact that they're giving it away,
03:30I think it happens all the time.
03:32I just think it's subtler.
03:34Like everyone is drilling down on every other team in live action and on film.
03:39For sure.
03:39And they're looking for it, and this isn't like trash can banging or something.
03:42This is the history of the game.
03:44If you can't disguise your pitch, if you're showing it in your glove,
03:48you've got a wide glove, or you're showing it because you take your hand out quick,
03:52or you're showing it because you dip your shoulder on a certain pitch,
03:55like this is code-breaking and going on.
04:00I had never seen something so – like again, on that game on June 19th,
04:05which is like a month ago now, I was just like –
04:08I felt like, how am I the only guy in the press box who sees Judge
04:12like looking like a giant – I mean, he's 6'7",
04:15and he looks like a giant butterfly out there doing this.
04:19And I kind of pointed it out, and then it kind of just got lost to time
04:22until the Munoz stuff.
04:24So I thought it'd be interesting to bring back that I actually did see him do this.
04:28That's why you're so insightful, Joel,
04:30and that's why we love having you on the show,
04:32because you bring such great knowledge and things that we don't see,
04:35whether it's on TV or even at the ballpark.
04:38And like you said, it's fun to do things when you see things like this
04:42and notice trends and just a great piece of video.
04:45I'm glad we were able to bring that on here and highlight that this has happened before,
04:48and we'll certainly pay attention if we see someone at second base doing this again
04:53in future games.
04:53I wouldn't be surprised if they do it again because, like, look, the world knows it now.
05:01And I just wondered, does the other team react by hitting somebody?
05:06Or like what – and I would argue close up your stuff.
05:11Yeah.
05:12Like tidy up your stuff.
05:15You're not being subtle, so I'm not going to be subtle.
05:17Like we see it and we have to – but we know players get touchy on the field about stuff like this.
05:25And as you – you know, anyone who sees the video, like Nerys does kind of step off at some point.
05:29And as anyone who saw Cal Raleigh – Cal Raleigh came out to the mound with Munoz and said,
05:34they got something.
05:37And I'm not 100% certain of this, but I think I'm pretty sure of this.
05:42I think after he throws the second splitter, Nerys throws the second splitter to Stanton in that inning.
05:51That's his best pitch.
05:52I don't think he throws another one in the inning.
05:55I think he knows they have – I think him and the catcher know that they have it, you know.
06:01And I don't think he went back to it.
06:04But that one I'm not positive about.
06:06But I – you know, you're testing my memory from a game a month ago now.
06:09But I think he stopped throwing it.
06:13Because, like, I'll chart as I go along pitches and stuff, and I think he had stopped throwing it.
