00:00The Giants were in pads for the second time in two days.
00:06But obviously, everyone's talking about one thing out of camp, Giants wide receiver.
00:10Malik Nabors left practice, what looks to be a left shoulder injury.
00:14I'm Brandon London, here's Paul Schwartz, a long time Giants beat writer for the post.
00:19Paul, I mean, just let's go straight into this,
00:21because obviously, it's making the headlines, everyone's talking about it.
00:25I didn't get that great of an angle, but kind of tell us what you saw,
00:29and then we'll kind of go into details.
00:31I think it was on a blocking play and he came off the field,
00:33walked off the field with a head trainer, Ronnie Barnes.
00:37I'm told it is a shoulder.
00:39I'm told it's nothing people are overly concerned about.
00:43So I don't think it's going to be anything significant.
00:45Okay, no needs to go full Justin Fields on this one.
00:48But when we talk about Malik Nabors and what he brings to this offense,
00:53dynamic, explosive player going into his second season,
00:57how did the offense look to you after?
01:00And I'm going to set you up a little bit more and give a little bit of context.
01:03Wondell Robinson and Jalen Hyatt looked like they both had that days.
01:07Darius Slayton was kind of the only starter from last year that was practicing,
01:13and he had himself a day.
01:14Well, don't forget, Wondell Robinson and Jalen Hyatt are both nursing injuries.
01:19You know what I mean?
01:20You know, Wondell got run into by Brian Burns last week,
01:24and Hyatt has a little hamstring.
01:26So they're being held out.
01:27I will say Malik Nabors looked great.
01:30I mean, he's looked, I mean, you know, you're an expert on this, right?
01:33I mean, you know, something, look, we know he's a really good player,
01:35and he's in his second camp.
01:37I think he's like, he's looked better, right?
01:39He's looked more polished, maybe stronger.
01:42So he's looked great.
01:43I mean, you know, you can talk about Abdul Carter on defense looking great.
01:46But, you know, when you look at Nabors, you watch them, you say, okay,
01:48that's the best player.
01:50So without him, without Wondell, yeah, Darius Slayton made a few nice plays.
01:55And then it's a bunch of young guys who were trying to learn and figure it out.
01:57So it doesn't look quite as good.
01:59You know what I mean?
02:00Now, they did a lot of running today and things like that.
02:02But, you know, just like the offensive line is built around Andrew Thomas,
02:06this offense really that has some weapons is built around Malik Nabors.
02:10There's no question.
02:11And everything I've seen so far this summer makes me think that, yes,
02:16he was a terrific rookie, and there's a lot more on the plate for him.
02:20It's almost like when he gets back, just give him the plays he needs
02:23and shut him down.
02:24It's almost like don't put him out there for team run.
02:26You know what?
02:27When he makes a good play, I always say to myself, okay, that's enough.
02:32That's enough.
02:33You know what I mean?
02:33That's enough.
02:34Give him a couple of plays today, a couple of plays tomorrow.
02:36Have a day off tomorrow, a couple of plays Thursday, bing, bang.
02:39Get him off, bubble wrap him.
02:40We'll see you against the Commanders.
02:42Now, you know that's not the deal.
02:44Your father's a coach and you were a player, so you know that's not the deal.
02:47And I know that's not the deal.
02:49But still, you know, you hear all these dispatches around the league.
02:52This guy's out.
02:53This guy's out.
02:53This guy's out.
02:54And I think I know they're working hard.
02:56It's hot.
02:59Just don't give him too much, okay?
03:00He doesn't have to hit the ground running 100% and be the absolute best.
03:05Brian Dabo would never say that, but I know I'm just very conservative.
03:09When I see a guy go off the field, I'm like, all right, let's see him in a few weeks.
03:12Yeah, because he's earned it.
03:13You talk about a guy that was rehabbing the toe, so he didn't have OTAs and he didn't
03:17have minicamp, but he showed up to training camp, business as usual.
03:22So what else do you need to see from this kid at this point?
03:25As long as he's getting with a wide receivers coach, Mike Groh, and Russell Wilson getting
03:31into the playbook, and what Tom Coughlin used to say, no and no, you know, Russ is a guy
03:37that when they sit together at lunch or maybe he goes over, hangs out with Young Future and
03:42Sierra, they talk a lot of football, kid doesn't need that much more work.
03:47So I'm like, yes, let's bubble wrap him, and it's kind of what the Giants did that
03:51approached my 07 year with Plaxico Burris, who had the ankle injury.
03:55I took a lot of reps for him.
03:57When Amani Toomer took a vet day, I took a lot of reps for them, and that benefited me,
04:02the young guy.
04:03I was a little upset with the young guys today because I felt like they missed out on the
04:06opportunity with guys being down with injuries.
04:10There was a little, you know, guys a little, the communication was off with the Russell Wilson
04:14and the Jameis Winston.
04:16If you're going to, if you're Bo Collins or you're one of those guys, you get the opportunity
04:19to go in there with Russell Wilson.
04:22You got to, you got to make sure you, you, you overcompensate per se when it comes to knowing
04:29where you're supposed to be in your spot and making that play.
04:32But again, these are guys that are fighting for possibly that last receiver spot and
04:36practice squad rosters.
04:37But again, at the end of the day, I think Darius Slayton kind of showed why the Giants
04:42like him enough to resign him to that deal, make some big plays out there.
04:46And one thing about him, he looks better as a route runner.
04:48Well, you know, I mean, that's why you want to see the cream rise to the top, right?
04:52See, this guy, young guy, this guy, this guy's out, this guy's out.
04:54Oh, Slayton just makes the catch, you know what I mean?
04:57That's what they do, you know what I mean?
04:59But I like the running game so far.
05:00I like Cam Scadaboo a lot.
05:01I like Tyrone Tracy a lot.
05:03I thought the offensive line certainly yesterday and I think today looks pretty good again in
05:09run blocking.
05:10You know, you know, I kind of like Evan Neal playing guard.
05:12I kind of like him.
05:13He's a massive guy.
05:13Whoa, can you say that again?
05:15I kind of like him playing guard.
05:17I really do.
05:17Now, you know, let Michael Parsons be breathing down his neck or something like that.
05:24I know.
05:25I get it.
05:25But he's a big dude.
05:28He's a huge dude and if he just keeps his man in front of him, he has a chance.
05:34He has a chance because he's so massive.
05:36Jermaine Illuminor the other day was saying, you know, Jermaine Illuminor is not a small guy
05:39and Jermaine Illuminor was saying, he's just so big.
05:42His hands are like twice as big as mine.
05:44You know, when you look at Evan Neal, you don't say that guy's a bust.
05:48You say, I don't like the way he played, but I see why they took him, you know, high in
05:53the draft because look at that guy.
05:55So maybe he gets a second life at guard.
05:58You know, a week and a half at the training camp, I would say I'm pleasantly surprised
06:02by what I think of him so far at guard, but there's a lot more to go.
06:05We're going to end that there.
06:07I love it.
06:07But you know what?
06:08Tyrone Tracy kind of gave him some compliments as well.
06:11Almost cursed when he talked about how Evan Neal has been mauling guys.
06:14And you know, we've had, we've heard Brian Dable and other guys talk about making that
06:18switch from the outside to inside.
06:20And I asked him like, what exactly, what exactly do you changes from being from the outside
06:25and the inside?
06:26Things happen faster because he says he's got the three technique nose right there in front
06:30of him than a wide five technique.
06:33So that makes sense.
06:34But if there's anyone that needs the maul or get up on someone right away, it's Evan
06:41Neal.
06:41So that guard, would you say that there is now a competition for that guard position?
06:47Yeah, I think there is.
06:47You know, they know what Greg Van Roten is.
06:49He's 35 years old.
06:50He did not miss one snap last year.
06:52He is a glue guy.
06:54They love his leadership.
06:55You know, Evan Neal does not give you that.
06:57You know, Evan Neal's not a leader per se.
06:59You know, he's a, he's quiet.
07:01He does his job.
07:02He's a massively powerful guy.
07:04But if he, you know, miss a twist or miss a stunt or he and John Michael Schmitz look
07:08at each other and say, I thought you had him.
07:10I thought I had him.
07:11You know, that's no good.
07:12That gets Russ killed, you know, you know, in the interior.
07:15So, um, Greg Van Roten doesn't make those mistakes, you know, per se.
07:20Now he doesn't have the power and explosion and youth that Evan Neal does.
07:24So Evan Neal's going to have to take that job from him.
07:26I don't know if he will, but I'm encouraged.
07:28That's all.
07:28Look, he's not going to win or lose the job in a week.
07:31And a half, I'm encouraged because, you know, everyone inside the Giants have told me the
07:35one thing they liked in the spring when he lined up inside, his size showed up that you can't,
07:42it's hard to just run around him because he's so big, you know what I mean?
07:46And as he answered your question, you know, maybe the lack of, you know, setting his guy
07:53up and using his arms, you know, that was a struggle for him.
07:55Lack of space, lack of space, maybe the lack of space.
07:58Look, now he's going to have to get his assignments down.
08:00But if he does, he doesn't have to be a hundred percent clean.
08:04He's so big and so powerful.
08:06He just can't let, he just can't whiff.
08:08Yeah, yeah.
08:09Get a body on him, get a body.
08:10Just get something on him and it's going to be hard to get around him.
08:13And then Russ has got to get rid of the ball.
08:14So, um, that's all, you know, encourages the best thing I can say.
08:18And that's better than saying, I don't think he's any good.
08:21Well, the Giants are off tomorrow and then they come back on Thursday.
08:24That's great and encouraging for Malik neighbors.
08:26It gives him a day to kind of rest that shoulder up.
08:28We'll see how he kind of responds and what their plan of attack is going to be
08:34for him going forward without through the rest of training camp.
08:37But thanks for watching your Blue Rush post practice report.
08:44We'll see you next time.
